Dragon Ball did have amazing animation though. DBZ had some incredible animation too in the saiyan saga and some hit or miss moments through the cell saga.

In terms of conveying movement you're fucking kidding yourself if you think theres a single show that does it like they used to (animators in general not DB). Anime is still much better than the west in that regard but considering the vast majority of western animation is worse than Newgrounds circa-2002 that's not saying much.

Dragon Ball gets so much hate for the filler in the animation but its legitimately stunning before they added the Z.

Granted, your friend probably doesn't consider these things but he doesn't really have to. A million people could tell you they love Stairway to Heaven only about 100 of them could tell you why.
