Before the Dark Knight returned…

The Joker. Poison Ivy. Selina Kyle. And the last Robin.

Thanks OP.

>>
>>83789840
I think it's to give the other reason why he decides to retire. After all, the main universe's Batman didn't retire after the death of Jason.

And then once he comes out of retirement he's generally more refreshed than he's ever been.
>>
>>83789983

Miller's Joker is best Joker.
>>
>>83790063
If there's one thing consistent with Miller's Batman it's that Batman's inconsistent and changes his mind a lot.

Assuming that Holy Terror would've been part of the Millerverse Batman canon, he kills terrorists in an act of war. Then he does brutal injuries to corrupt cops between that time and what we've seen in All Star Batman. He treats Dick badly but does all right with Jason and Carrie (mainly because he wasn't used to having a partner at first). He scolds Spawn for not caring about human life and refuses to kill the Joker in DKR. He applauds Hawkman's son for killing Luthor and is willing to kill Dick Grayson in DK2.
>>
>>83789740
Damn, Bats.

>>

>>

>>
>>83789815
He came up with the story, co-plots, consults on the dialogue and general scripting, and does the backups on his own.

Azz scripts.

So yeah, he did co-write it even if Azz did most of the work.
>>
>>83790319

>>
>>83790357
This. Azz and Miller meet every month or so and talk. Azz takes notes and flies back home to write the script.

that Hate=8=∞ bit is brilliant, the sort of thing that you'd expect Morrison or Moore to come up with, with the craziness Miller exhibited for a long time you forget that he's also pretty brilliant in that manner, if in a slightly more down to earth manner
>>
>>83790357
>>83789795
My main concern with Dark Knight 3 is that it lacks teeth.

DKR and TDKSA for as "dark" as they were, were pretty damn crazy. You didn't know what was going to happen next. What crazy cameo or threat would pop up next. What wacko pop culture commentary would pop up. Oh shit, it's Two-Face! Now it's Cyclops! Joker? SUPERMAN GOT NUKED?! Now it's several years later and Braniac is destroying Metropolis in a giant frog, Ray Palmer is Micro Robinson Crusoe, Plastic Man is ball, Green Lantern is a God, and Superman & Wonder Woman just wrecked a fucking mountain by FUCKING.

The Master Race? It's just a bunch of evil Kryptonians. Granted, they're supposed to be Kryptonian ISIS, but it's still very rote compared to the madness of its two predecessors.
>>
>>83790621
No, because Azzarello most likely wrote most of it.
>>
>>83790657

Heartbreaking to see him like this.

And yet the newer stuff is so much better.

So was this a one-shot? It is fine as a one-shot, it needs no follow-up, not really...

It even gently deals with ASBAR.

An expressive art style isn't inherently bad. Works for Quietly, Pope and others.

If that were the case, everyone's sons, daughters and mothers would be in the comic industry.

And just to be clear, this isn't a blind JRJR defense force, because i hate when he goes by his deadline style, but this obviosly isn't.

>>
>>83793354
I'd say it works even more as a prologue to BvS, actually. His dialogue with Alfred about old men wanting to be young screamed Batfleck to me, and Alfred seemed very similar to Jeremy Irons in terms of his mannerisms here.

>>
>>83795488
This wasn't an event book, it was a character study of Bruce and Jason.
>>
>>83790357
His heart wasn't in it though, pretty sure they did it to fund his funeral/help his family out with money after he died, but then, he got better and did this, as well as the backups which were previously unannounced.
I cite the heart was not in it thing on some interviews/panels with him and Azz, like the NYCC one, and also his twitter q&a where he was asked "what was the inspiration behind DK3" and he responded "Brian Azzarello"
>>
>>83789939
That was a lot better than I was expecting. Not as amazing as TDKR, but definitely a very worthy prequel.

>>83795792
Miller stopped giving a shit about comics 15 years ago. DKSA/ASBAR is what it looks like when a master of a craft stops trying.
>>
Isn't MillerBats more brutal and ruthless? He is very different from ASBAR and DKR
>>
Question, will there be more issues of this? Or it's over?
>>
>>83789312

>>
This is genuinely good. I enjoyed Miller Year One and DKR as well as his Daredevil run.

I loathed holy terror and the stupidity that was DKSA and ASBAR.

I am still lukewarm to DK3 due to the iffyness of kryptonian ISIS but this right here is pretty good. It's genuinely hard to imagine this batman being the insane version from ASBAR.

Add in the fact we finally get some good Romita art in years, this will be my first Miller purchase in a long long time.

Thanks for the storytime.

>>
>>83806803
Because he's psychopath
>>
>>83806803
Trial and error
In #9 and #10 he realized how shit he was to Dick and made him into a killer
>>
>>83795782
If it's a character study, it wasn't really necessary. What did it tell us that we didn't already know? Bruce is a stubborn old man, Jason was cocky, violent and full of potential, and The Joker is a psycho? We already knew all that shit.
>>
>>83806803
Remember that in All Star Batman, Bruce originally intended on recruiting Dick in order to have someone to pass on the mantle in the future. But then Dick's parents were unexpectedly killed and he needed to act fast.

On top of that he was still being a deranged asshole after the events of Holy Terror and living on rats in his sewer Batcave for a while.

He probably mellowed out a little maybe somewhere after the end of All Star Batman (though if you look at Spawn/Batman, he'll still be an asshole to others) and probably wanted to treat Jason better, which is why he's not as much as asshole with him here.
>>
>>83806964
>On top of that he was still being a deranged asshole after the events of Holy Terror and living on rats in his sewer Batcave for a while
What
>>
>>83806934
We only knew Jason is cocky, violent, and full of potential because we're basing it off of the mainline Jason. Remember that at the time Miller did DKR, Jason was practically like a Dick clone instead of the kid living on the streets.

We knew Bruce was stubborn through DKR and DK2, but we didn't realize that his concern with age and injuries were a part of what made him retire and not just because Jason got killed.
>>
>>83807019
Why do you think he tried making Dick live in the cave and eat rats?

He was doing to Dick what he did to himself.
Except when you do it to yourself, you're just crazy, instead of it being torture when you do it to somebody else.

But yeah Holy Terror goes inbetween Year One and ASBAR.
>>
>>83807019
Holy Terror was originally supposed to be Batman Year 1.5 as Miller said.

In All Star Batman #10, it mentions the first Batcave is the one he has under the sewers and that he lived on rats for a while. In #3 he was trying to force Dick to eat live rats.

Holy Terror was a originally a Batman story, and Miller said all of his Batman stuff is in one universe. If you go to forums talking about ASBAR from like a decade ago you may see the occasional mention of Miller working on Holy Terror/Batman vs Al Qaeda

Smoking's cool when the character ACTUALLY smokes. Nowadays, and that's probably due to all sorts of legal stuff and things like that, characters just swing the cigarette around in their hand and then put it out even if they just lit it up, but JOKER, he enjoys it, he sucks it in puffs it out, the whole drill. He really smokes, and doesn't just act like it. Also it suits his quiet, observant and calm persona.

As much as I like Batman and some other characters, but.. mostly Batman, in the main continuity, it's so important and a fucking relief to have something outside that universe, something were there's actually creative freedom and no tie-ins, universal events and all that jazz, just self-contained stories with fresh takes on characters, new character dynamics, new settings etc.
>>
>>83796463
I really don't think that's the case, especially ASBR, as well as the backups to DK3 which were as I said were unscheduled until he recovered and got his spark back. Also casuals as usual didn't read his post 9/11 Martha Washington.
Different storytelling style that you don't like isn't not trying. I'll agree he got sloppy and arrogant, probably was more resistant to editors and the people who proofed the art.
>>
>>83815688
Yea I don't understand why they didn't bring back a Legends of the Dark Knight or Brave and the Bold title for Batman so he can have short status quo free stories. It is the best way to have the character exist.
Rotating writers, hire Dini back for every other story, get new or Batman-virgin talent for the rotation
>>
>>83816243
You could say that Batman is pretty oversaturated as is, so maybe they're afraid that adding more Bat titles would finally break the camel's-- or in this case, the bat's back, and as much as I would like to see more different Batmen, they are probably right.

If you look at Holy Terror, you could easily see Fixer was obviously supposed to be Batman, Natalie Stack was obviously supposed to be Catwoman, and Donegal is obviously supposed to be Gordon. Donegal also has the same rank Gordon has at the end of Year One. Batman and Catwoman barely meet in Year One but by All Star Batman they're already lovers. Since Miller said Holy Terror is Batman Year 1.5, it shows the six months between the end of Year One and Holy Terror that Batman has constantly been after Catwoman and are kind of foes.

You can read Holy Terror as actually how Batman and Catwoman get together and why he might've decided to leave the mansion for a while and live in the sewer while eating rats, as you see in >>83807822 . The only issue would be that Fixer uses guns and kills terrorists, but if you keep in mind that All Star Batman was very careless about possible bystanders (like Vicki), then Holy Terror and the early All Star Batman is like some batshit insane version of the pre-Robin Golden Age Batman with the guns and all that.

And as >>83790210 pointed out Miller's Batman is prone to changing his mind drastically.

Shit, you can even imagine Alfred's dialogue in >>83789886 about Bruce possibly enjoying the war as referring to not just All Star Batman but also Holy Terror.
>>
There better be a sneaky part 2 to this. It was good, but the ending fizzled and ultimately contributed nothing to the universe. It didn't explain anything we didn't already know and it basically ended on a cliffhanger.

>In "Last Crusade," we see a couple of big Batman characters that we haven't seen in the Dark Knight world before -- Killer Croc and Poison Ivy. What motivated incorporating these two villains into this story?

>Miller: Batman's always been notoriously known for having the sexiest female villains around, from Catwoman on. Poison Ivy was inevitable to make her way into the Dark Knight world.

>Killer Croc -- I know that one came from Brian. He's had a thing for Killer Croc for a long time.

>John, what inspired your take on Killer Croc? He's not as Croc-like, and more human.

>Romita: Brian sent me some reference on his version that he had worked on [in the "Joker" graphic novel, illustrated by Lee Bermejo]. The size and the skin problems were just about it. It was less about the likeness to the Croc than it was about the size.

>I love gigantic characters; I love when [characters are] getting bounced around like a tennis ball. It connects to the fact that Batman has lost it in his own mind. He's losing it, and it leads to his decision to retire. The character was fun. That's like driving around in fancy car, you just put it into the next gear and you go. It's fun to play with gigantic characters, and you love beating up the hero.

I'm thinking this more broadly and counting the games (Injustice 2 and Arkham games), movies (live-action and animated), tv (Gotham, but this is debatable ofc), countless cameos in almost every DC title recently to get a reader boost and yes, his own books like: Last Crusade, Detective comics, Batman, Batman: Earth One, the upcoming vertigo book by Paul Dini titled Dark Night: The true Batman story, Master Race, and so on.

That guy's everywhere.
>>

>>
>>83798804
It is. Frank Miller was pretty much always retarded.
>>
i don't understand, was this same Bruce and Batman in all star and strikes aging ?
In those two works,he was like a very unpleasant cold blooded jerk that does not even care about Jason and anyone unlike in this one and return. If Frank can write Batman this likable, what did he wrote him like that in those two books ?
>>
>>83829781
Yes it's the same Batman. All of Miller's Batman stuff are in the same timelime. >>83807451

He did care about Dick to some extent, like the only times he felt bad about anything in ASBAR was when Dick was involved. And he did identify with Dick with the whole parents being dead thing, and there were times where he tried to be buddy buddy with him but Dick wouldn't cooperate like Batman wanted or acted out too much.
But he just cared about the mission more so he put Dick through all that stuff and is a really harsh mentor because he wants a replacement/apprentice to take over when he dies or gets too old. He went through the stuff himself and was like "damn I'm awesome so he'll be awesome too", except putting yourself through it just means you're crazy but doing it somebody else, especially a kid, is basically torture.
>>
>>83829781
Where'd you get the impression he didn't care about Jason? He treated Dick badly in All Star and said Jason honored him.
>>
>>83807451
I wouldn't count Holy Terror, I think it's impossible to reconcile with the Batman character and does not have the influence of editorial to align it with the rest of Miller's DC work

I don't see anything significantly wrong in this review.

The Last Crusade was a very enjoyable reading experience, and I liked every second of it, but when actually start thinking about what actually went down in the book, well, at least I personally felt underwhelmed.
It felt like it was cut off too early, and what confuses me is, that is this a #1 like some websites say or is this IT? If there's still more to come, then I get why I feel the way I do, but if this is seriously all there'll be, then it really was a lackluster in many ways.

he was subjecting dick what he subjected to himself except dick is 12 and doing it to somebody else is called torture
he learned after dick almost killed hal that teaching him to kill was a pretty bad idea and he shouldn't have done it

and as we see in this storytime bruce seemingly wanted to teach jason how to be a better man so jason wouldn't turn out like himself and presumably dick

If you only read DKR and Year One and never read any Miller Batman comic afterwards then yes.

But I don't see how you'd think that when this comic doesn't match with Death in the Family other than "The Joker is responsible for Jason's death." And besides, it showed there were other factors for Bruce retiring other than Jason getting killed, like his age and how he wasn't operating at his usual abilities. Death in the Family happened to a younger Bruce.

It was originally earth 31 but apparently Miller opted out of Multiversity and told Morrison to not include it

what does tumblr have to do with anything
>>
>>83863354
I doubt Multiversity is cannon anymore.
>>
>>83863513
So he took Earth 31 from Morrison and Carrie Kelly from Thomasi and Gleason's Batman and Robin. Seems greedy.

>>83864585
I hope they try and keep it somewhat in canon. Seems like recently every time Morrison has a great idea DC editorial shits on it. *Cough* Multiversity*Dick-Bats*Damian's death (Though the resurrection was pretty cool)*Cough*Cough*

Batman has held Joker in his arms more times than he's held Selina, Talia or any other female love interest.

Is this the longest lasting 0-day storytime ever?
>>
>>83869480
I'd be surprised if it wasn't. It's incredibly difficult for a storytime to be just popular enough to get constantly bumped for 100s of posts without being too popular to hit bump limit quickly.
>>
bumping for others.

>>
>>83882881
Who knows anymore. Originally, it seemed like it was all or mostly written out, and the delays were all on Lee's end. But I think Frank said last year that he and Lee started working on a sequel to ASBAR.
>>
>>83882881
They've been saying that they're working on it for forever now.

Last time they said it was last October or something, but it's not gonna happen until Lee is done with Suicide Squad at least.

>>83882995
the ASBAR sequel is Dark Knight Boy Wonder. More like the last half rather than a proper sequel
