Heh, nothing is ever good with /co/ - as an amalgamation of (supposed) comicbook enthususiasts, you lot seem very keen on pissing on the genre/artists/writers.
Not even offering constructive criticism or mature discussion - nope, it's /b/tard level, self entitled childishness.

Duke will be Robin in all but name. I don't see how not calling him Robin makes a difference. I'd prefer DC to just be straight with us and make him Robin. I bet they'd have liked to for the headlines of first black robin, but Snyder probably wanted to do something "original",

They are between rock and a hard place, because the outrage from taking the Robin title form Damian could have overhelmed any postivity from such a move.

Duke might be a black, but Damian could be (and would have been in such situation) considered half-arab. Imagine the spin that can be achived from that only.

Eh, it was alright I guess. Not sure if I'll continue this, doesn't seem very interesting.

Read this because of King, but I guess I just don't like Batman that much. Story seems a bit by the numbers compared to the other stuff he wrote, which I suppose was to be expected for a huge character like Batman.

This statement implies you expect batman stories to be by the number, wich further implies you've read jack shit.

What's so good about this issue? It's not bad by any means, but it's not "great" either. Seriously, I want someone to explain why this is amazing, to me it's a really mediocre start.

I fucking love King, but so far I'm really not impressed. All of his first issues hooked me, but this one is just kinda there.
>>
>>83790070
So King has to play second fiddle to Snyder?
>>
>>83791691
It's not shit, it's not amazing. Finch is terribly mediocre, no denying that, Bellaire and Banning can only do so much. I didn't like the overdramatic scenes. Batman's voice isn't really the best. Except for that nothing I have to say, concept seems good and hopefully King delivers. Honestly is a downgrade so far from Snyder/Capullo so far. I wish they'd gotten Romita and Silvestri.

Snyder didn't made him a Robin, though. He made him Lark since the beginning. It was other writers, like Bermejo, that turned him into a Robin.

The Damian thing didn't bother me so much because it was clear with how they were going from Tim to Damian. But there's no clarity between Duke and Damian since they want to have both but don't actually want Damian partenering with Batman?

Yes. As long as Snyder is writing Batman, he is the de facto head writer of the line. What he wants to do is more impportant than any other writer. And as much as some folks don't like that, Snyder's sales numbers have justified this position for him at DC.
>>

Good issue. Obviously a reader-friendly setup but seeing how Batman would react to a plane or a meteor or something like that coming down in Gotham is an interesting choice.

The Gotham and Gotham Girl stuff is going to let us get into the usual big-King ideas.
>>
>>83794438
My first thought upon seeing this issue was "Wow, John Workman!" Lots of crappy lettering at DC but this guy is a champ.

>>83795462
I think this issue is supposed to establish how inferior Batman is to the other superheroes, at least strength-wise. Now that the Gotham folks came to the scene, clearly all powered-up, it opens the door for interesting dialogues and ideologies in the future. Just fucking wait, dude.
>>
>>83795647

"Better than Snyder" is a low bar, it's worse than King's usual work and exactly what people were afraid of after Robin War anyway. Maybe he just can't do normal capeshit and needs to be on weirder titles.
>>
>>83795846
People were expecting to be wowed and got decompressed mediocrity. Batman needs to ship twice a month to tell less than a single issue's worth of story.
>>
>>83788753
So is it safe to say the "Gotham is Nite Owl, Gotham Girl is Silk Specter" theory is BTFO?
>>
>>83795939
I dont see the complaints. This issue was to fix and restablish. He set up the story for the arc, made Bruce much more personal again and showed he is a human who loves his family. Made him treat Duke like a normal person and set up a villain and an interesting conflict between ideologies.

Don't jump all over the man yet, he has to fix everything Snyder broke first.
>>
>>83795700
You guys are impatient as fuck, he's got a lot to set up
>>
I thought this issue was really good. There wasn't a ton of 'writing' to be done given that most of this was just an action set piece to introduce the story, but for what its purpose it, I think it accomplishes it very well. I'm really excited to keep reading to see where it goes.
>>
>>83794676
>>83795970

They're definitely original characters. There's no way they're gonna put a fan favorite like King on this book and give him his big shot to shine and then saddle him out of the gate with all of those decades of loaded history. He wouldn't have been given the book if his pitch was based on moving backwards instead of forwards.

They're gonna sit back and see what he can do (at least at the start) just like they did with Snyder on Court of Owls.
>>
Really liked this. My only problems are that some of the dialogue felt awkward (Alfred saying "your city", and the unnecessary "mother and father" for example) and it was a bit decompressed.
For week 3: Green Arrow>Batman>Titans>Superman>Green Lanterns
>>
I knew it wouldn't be at the level of Omega men or Vision, but at least it wasn't bad.

Will give it 4 more issues before any conclusion.

King is so ridiculously on the nose and in your face. Having Batman ask Alfred if he made his parents proud and if a threat that is on the considerably low end of dangerous things he's faced will result in a good death all in the first issue of a run does not bode well.
>>
>>83795846
Bruce crying to Alfred because he's on the wing of an airplane is about the furthest thing from "back to normal".
>>
>>83796251
Hes about to die and is talking to his father. Its entirely normal for Bruce since Oneil. Sorry you are use to the autistic sperg Snyder used.
>>

OK, I know this place is in full Kinfaggotry mode, but cmon now.
>>
>>83796251
This.
He should have looked smug and said HH.
Or used some zen technique he learned in Tibet to survive. Or have an inner monologue spanning 5 panles about his father taking him somehwere or the gotham airport being named after the famous pilot something Wayne.

He was only going to die after all, doesn't he know this is a comicbook and he was going to be fine?
>>
>>83796104
Yeah, this is a bi-weekly book. I think expecting issue one to come out of the gate and knock us all on our ass is absurd. King said he's gearing up for stories that last for 5-6 months.
>>
>>83796293
He's right though, Snyder Bruce would have told the plane his identity and found out the plane is his secret brother
>>

>>
>>83796495
No your right he totally should have died in the first issue because he suddenly can't escape an open air plane crash (which is something he's done thousands of times). Thank God the new OC were there to save him, I hope they stick around because new Bruce won't survive very long if he's gonna go out like a bitch every time someone puts a bomb on a plane.

And note, Finger Tower is actually to the LEFT, indicating a "firstness". I was disappointed in how Snyder wrote Alfred, so I'm really happy to see him being himself again.

Also I like how Gordon is written so far.
>>
As someone who abhors Batgod and likes seeing a more human side of Bruce it is definitely odd seeing him so... resigned and questioning, I guess, at what he thinks is the end of his life. It's emotional padding to fill out a scene that so obviously to the reader isn't the end, and that makes it ring completely hollow.
>>
>>83796670
Thats completely fucking different. The Batwing was built by Bruce of course he can escape from it.
>>
>>83796737

>>

>>
>>83796784
Yeah but it really stands out when you're going there in your first issue for an objectively mediocre superhero threat.
>>
>>83796737
I think it wasn't to force feels but more to set up how King's Bruce will behave. I think a lot of this issue was showing you he ISNT Snyder. One of people's main complaints about Snyder's run was he wrote a horrible Bruce and Batman and King clearly is remedying that. If you are someone that started reading Batman with New 52 this may be jarring to you.

The point is he's escaped falling from the sky at high speeds and altitudes so often that jumping off of a plane at Impact should be old hat by now (leaving aside the fact that not being able to stabilize and automate his bat rockets once he was over the water is shitty writing).

>>
>>83796930
Thats poor writing though. King isnt a poor writer and worked for the CIA. This is looking like it will be a Batman based in realism. He wont be single handedly fist fighting meta humans or stopping planes from falling from the sky. The whole point of this arc is going to be to show Batman is just human and has his limits. That is why he is using Gotham and Gotham Girl.

Batman has been through so much insane shit at this point if you're gonna read a book about him being street level you're gonna have to suspend your disbelief.

If the entire concept of Bruce having problems with a crashing airline is a no sell for you then don't reading a fucking comic that's about Bruce having problems with a crashing airline.
>>
>>83797422
that's why I liked him asking if this death was a good one.
the guy has stopped horrible plots that would have killed thousand, helped stop alien invasions and now he his going to die to just save a small plane and its passenger, not an "epic" way to go
>>
>>83797000
>>83797422
Poor writing is trying to show Batman's realism by having him attach magic Bat rockets to an airliner but need to go down with the plane for "reasons". Poor writing is having Batman say he's going to die and overtly express love for his sons and refer to Alfred as his father in the first issue of your run when those should be events used less frequently than a blue moon. Poor writing is having new OC characters save Batman from a situation he could survive in his sleep. But I was never in the CIA so what do I know?
>>
>>83797546
>he thinks Batman showing his emotions should be once in a blue moon

Oh hi Snyder. Well there was this guy called ONeil that came way before your time that coined Bruce still being a functioning person while also being Batman. You may have never heard of him.
>>
>>83797489
Also Batman asking if a death will be a "good one" when the whole basis of the character is devoting his life to saving others and being stoic in the face of death is another example of shitty writing.
>>
>>83797572
There's a big difference between showing emotions subtly and obliquely and outright telling a person you love them, the latter of which is something Batman should do very infrequently if you know his characterization and if an author wants it to have an impact. You don't just trot it out in the first issue.
>>
>>83797573
>>83797546
You are literally basing everything that Batman should be off of one terrible terrible run by Snyder. Please either kill yourself or go read some other arcs by other writers to realize this is exactly how Bruce should behave. He shouldnt be "stoic in the face of death" or emotionless.

Snyder fucking sucks and you morons claiming you know Batman's true characterization while clamoring for him to die while crying to Alfred in the first issue of his run because of realism and emotions and saying that bat gadgets are stupid but not when they can magically save an airliner need to fucking check yourselves.
>>
>>83797573
Batman having doubts is nothing new, he is still going to do the hero thing and go down with the plane but is normal to have doubts and to search reassurance/comfort from Alfred
>>
>>83797783
But we knew he wouldn't die, the entire point was how will Batman escape even when he can't
>>
Also people are missing that with this issue King got out of the way all the usual baggage. He established Batman's relationship with the batfamily, his motivations and his willingness so now he an tackle new stuff in the future issues instead of rethreading the same stuff people already did
>>
First issue and the board has already heelturned on King, fun to see we're living up to our reputation. I'm getting flashbacks to the last Batman #1.

Pretty good issue, I felt Batman accepting his death at the end like that was a little out of character though. IMO when Alfred said he was going to die he would have just said "I know" and went out without the long goodbye.

Still I thought the plane thing was very cool and very Batman, felt like something from the early 80's Batman comics. Just a man with a couple of gadgets doing the impossible.

>>83788778
The current DCU is less than ten years old, so 9/11 occurred before Superman could fly, before Batman became Batman, and before the Darkseid invasion.
>>
>>83797851
This. Why are people being so retarded about this? He had to repair all the damage Snyder did before he could set up his own thing.

Now we know this Bruce is a human who cares about his family and mission more than anything.
>>
>>83797648
>>83797660
>>83797804
This is Batman 101 but he has been most frequently characterized as confident to a fault, stoic and largely emotionless, deals with the darkest parts of humanity on the outside and inside of his mind, and has a gadget for ever situation. I don't know what the fuck you guys are even trying to argue.
>>
>>83789173
I'm a fan of both characters. In this situation Superman would be the objectively better savior, but the point is to show how Batman has to go the extra mile to achieve the same results. It ain't saying he's better nor worse, just that he has to try harder and that he's willing to do it.
>>
>>83797823

I've read King's scripts and can see into the future
>>

I was hoping they were Chris and Thara
>>
>>83800497
Snyder admitted to actively hating most of the Batfamily and was constantly trying to create reasons for why they didnt show up.
>>
>>83800501
I'm talking about the names you fucking simpleton. A lark is a bird that might as well be a robin.
>>
>>83800555
You're upset about a name?
>>
>>83800555
They outdoor gave called him Rhino, this isn't about the name, you're just looking for excuses to shit post

It was in one of his earlier interviews. Thet asked him about Damian and he said he didnt like most of the batfamily cause he didnt like the idea of child soldiers.

Then he created Harper and Duke, so basically he was just being a faggot and wanted to make his own OCs instead of using established characters.
>>
>>83800579
>>83800641
There is literally nothing to differentiate him from any other Robin aside from the superficiality of his name, and even that isn't even a half-assed attempt at uniqueness.
>>
>>83800777
Because his character hasn't been worked on at all, anon.
But keep bitching, I'm sure you'll get Damian and Tim back eventually.
>>
>>83788599
Don't you gave a Bat-Jetpack or something? Seems more efficiemt than trying to guide a car seat hundreds of feet up to a moving target.
>>
>>83800767
He hated the batfam thats correct, the reason for damian was because he was afraid that he couldn't write him though
>>
>>83800844
55 issues and his skin color is the only thing that defines him still. Keep defending and supporting shitty decisions and I'm sure DC will somehow become even worse.
>>
>>83800777
Yeah man, I remember when Tim's parents were hit with Joker gas forcing Tim into a foster home which lead to him fighting crime with a bunch of wannabe Robins
>>
>>83800878
Who says anything about his skin color in canon?

Or are you just mad they made another black batcharacter?
>>
>>83800891
Do you remember when Tim figured out Batman's secret identity all by himself? Or when his parents were kidnapped by a villain and his mother was killed and his father left crippled forcing him to move into Wayne manor which lead to him fighting crime?

Fug.

>>83800915
Describe Duke Thomas' personality and how it's unique then.
>>
>>83800949
Yeah, and then his father and gf were murdered in shitty stories
>>
>>83801002
Nice attempted subject change you stupid fuck.
>>
>>83800878
>55 issues
Nigga he only appeared on Year zero (and briefly) and on Superheavy and Endgame (and briefly again on endgame)
>>
>>83796177

what if king thinks that he can make a good story out of that?
>>
>>83801017
We were talking about Tim, I didn't change the subject
>>
>>83800875
I think he said Damian was the same age as his own son and that made it hard for him to write him in situations that endangered his life or something.
>>
>>83801049
And I was pointing out how the idea that Duke is somehow different than Tim is a fucking joke and you countered with the brilliant argument that Tim had shitty stories at one point.
>>
>>83800989
Early Tim
>slightly geeky detective and tech expert who approaches crime fighting with caution
>prefers uses strategy and planning to defeat his opponents
>more serious and professional approach to heroics
Later Tim
>batman jr through and through
>people keep dying so he's sad all the time
new 52 tim
>arrogant shithead

Duke
>tries to be self-reliant
>has more faith in himself than in authoritative figures
>doesn't particularly like authoritative figures
>carries with him a slight bit of arrogance but is self-aware enough to know when he's in over his head
>>
>>83800989

I can't because I don't read Snyder.

Reminds me of how I couldn't describe Vision or the Omega Men's personalities before King either...
>>
>>83801133
They're back stories and reasons for wanting to be a hero are different, I'd say that makes them different
>>
>>83800989
Easy-going, friendly kid with leadership traits that's grown independent ever since his parents got jokerized and since he wasn't brought in immediately after the incident, he doesn't feel indebted to Bruce, since he's been doing just fine on his own. He also has a fear of heights that could make for some interesting moments, since the Bats are all airborne. Has his own network of street rats.
>>
>>83801155
You say the same thing 4 times in describing Duke, that says it all.
>>
>>83801242
>>83801196

Enjoy following this shitty character for months to come.
>>
>>83797885

He had more of a friendship with Gordon here than he has in five years
>>
>>83797981
Are you a fucking idiot? That's the entire purpose of the issue, that Batman couldn't quite save the day, and that there are Superman-level versions of Batman & Robin that make them obsolete.

The issue is introducing the concept of the story.

You criticize King but you can't even understand the most basic elements of storytelling.
>>
>>83788459
I had this pre-ordered on Comixology, but I loved it so much I'll probably go out tomorrow to try find a print copy, because I feel this will become an epic run.
>>
>>83801247
How does being self-reliant mean you don't like authority figures or being arrogant?

Dick likes to be self reliant and can be arrogant and not self aware of it but he can listen and like to authority figures if needed.

Why are people so upset?
>>
>>83801572
>muh Damian
>muh batfamily
>gross he's black
>BATMAN TOO OP
>batman is feeling too much make it stop
>THE TURN
>>
This was completely fine?

A little melodramatic with the good death stuff, but shit, it was nice to read a Batman story where he does something over-the-top and it's actually the crux of the story instead of a 3-page interlude leading into a 12 part story.
