He is usually just a big evil alien guy Superman punches these days. At his best a confrontation with Darkseid is like confronting despair/entropy itself. He's the ultimate end, the urge to give up.

That's what Kirby was trying to say. Since then he's been incorporated into the rest of the DC universe. He's the best when he is just a antagonist to the New Gods and not the entire DCU. Other writers fuck him up. Kirby and Morrison do him right.

At his heart Darkseid is motivated by fear of not being in control. Control over himself, his environment, his destiny, anything. It's an impulse we all have, but Darkseid, being a God and utterly lacking in any empathy whatsoever, takes it to the absolute extreme by wanting to subsume creation into himself in order to stop any outside force from ever having any influence on him. He sees other people as nothing more than potential threats that can either act or be used against him. So he seeks to remove free will from the universe and master every aspect of it so that he may be free of any threat upon him and know perfect peace.
