You know, it's good being an Equius fan. For a long time there, it really seemed like he was categorically dead and out of the story, only to have him magnificently roar back to life in both timelines and be a major player, AND he gets to be a major character in almost all of the good Paradox Space comics.
There was a time when Karkat was my favourite character and Equius was my second-favourite, but that became unsustainable when I realized that Karkat was narratively irrelevant and Hussie no longer gave a shit about making him a part of the story. For Equius to ascend in importance in direct proportion to Karkat's descent into irrelevance really made it feel a lot better.

The biggest failing of this comic, a comic that is largely character driven for a huge part of it, is that so few of the characters actually get to mesh against each other
The Equius/Dave rap battle is my personal favorite log in the entire comic simply because it's two characters that basically have no business talking to each other, just meshing together in a really great scene that celebrates both of their individual qualities
Unfortunately shit like that just disappears after Hussie decides he doesn't feel comfortable writing different characters talking to each other and for the rest of the comic you have basically the same conversations that have already happened before but about something else
Which is great and I love Dave and Rose logs but god damn why can't we fucking shake it up a bit

Honestly Hussie doesn't deserve to emotionally affect me this way, not after what he did to all of my favorite characters. After the epilogue (hell probably before) I will never get emotional about Homestuck again.
Another story with characters and a setting as unique as Homestuck's will come along, and I'll completely move on. Homestuck will be remembered as nothing more than inspiration for the objectively superior work (Undertale practically did that already, so it's only a matter of time).

It is, I really like it. Doesn't really have the same appeal as Homestuck, so I wouldn't dub it as a successor, but only because it stands on its own merits.
Rereading Homestuck really made me realize Hussie's grasp on dialogue. He made characters that were supposed to just be lazy caricatures seem more distinct than just about any work of fiction, in any medium. And that's an itch that I won't have scratched for a while.
I think what made the dialogue seem so natural was how the characters would waste time talking about pointless bullshit. It served no purpose other than to flesh everyone out, most stories don't bother doing that.

yeah, that is something Hussie does that I don't see elsewhere. There's an efficiency of storytelling, a ruthless efficiency, where no detail is superluous. i.e.: any character used must be relevant to the plot, so if there's two protagonists and one extra named character, you KNOW that leftover character must be the villain of the story. Hussie threw the level of detail and number of characters into such an overwhelming amount that I couldn't foresee events like I usually do in fiction.
... and goddamn that son of a bitch, it turned out that most of that superfluous detail actually did matter later, but I never knew which parts. So in a weird way he threw in so much detail I couldn't track it all but he also made me want to track it all but not try to make the connections before he sprung them on me.
I don't know any other author that can do that without resorting to absurdist or dada postmodern wankery.
