That's the beauty of it. In his attempts to make Mary the worst person in existence she retains popularity as her increasing "evil" makes her a cartoonish standout and villain you love to hate. As his sanity slips due to reality not conforming to his expectations he comes to believe that it's the past that he has to change. Gathering a brood of loyal followers, they seek to bring about his perfect world, even if they have to destroy history itself.

>Carla is, as always, an annoying turd on purpose
>Mary goes overboard and insults Carla's very gender over the inconvenience

My issue isn't that this whole storyline is complete balls, but more about how good it could've been with this setup. Just hear me out for a second. Think of how much both characters could've grown as a result of this incident if Willis had any interest in developing characters instead of writing a story where he gets to beat all the meaniehead bullies:

>Carla realizes being a complete and total twat on purpose only makes you enemies- so getting made at the enemies you yourself made and playing the victim card gets you nowhere
>Carla realizes the enemies she DOES make are just that- enemies- so taking what they say to heart is a dumb thing to do in the first place
>Mary realizes she takes shit waaay to seriously and legitimately needs to work on her anger
>Mary realizes that she probably shouldn't speak for god, as his judging is his own business

OR- OR OR OR OR OR- EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO KEEP MARY AS A VILLAIN:
>Skip the part where Mary knows about Ruth
>Have Ruth beat the shit out of Mary after getting drunk and breaking up with Billie
>Have the entire floor hate Mary's fuckin' guts
>Have a teacher give her completely bogus grades because of what she said
So at least then you have some pathos and motivation for why she'd be bigoted.

>boyfriend is uncomfortable with this
>ethan tries to put his toys in boyfriend's house
>boyfriend is uncomfortable with this, says so
>says ethan may have a problem, and he's willing to help him get through it
>ethan flips his shit
>later, ethan encounters a hoarder who was having an emotional breakdown
>uses that as an example of why he doesn't have a problem--because someone is far worse, he doesn't have a problem at all!
>we're supposed to side with ethan as the boyfriend leaves him rather than stay with a toxic partner
>as evidenced several issues later when the boyfriend returns, points out his new boyfriend is an enabler(which he is), then hits on him

There are no words strong enough to convey how bad Willis is at writing conflicts.

How does he manage to have a black and white viewpoint of his characters and yet still utterly fail to convey them as good guys and bad guys?

The "bad guys" are always grey area to downright reasonable, yet youre supposed to hate them, and the "good guys" are always loud violent pricks yet we're supposed to love them.

It's just astonishing. He fails character writing on every conceivable level.
>>
I hope every one of you has adblock enabled if you ever visit Willis's site.
>>
>>83679740
That was kind of the point where Shortpacked lost me. Among other things, it threw Jacob under the bus. Instead of having Jacob be a younger gen fandom foil for Ethan, Willis made him a sex addict, spun that into a general addictive personality. All so Ethan can say "At least I'm not *THAT GUY*"
>>
>>83679843
>He fails character writing on every conceivable level
I don't know how to say this without sounding trite but doing the same thing over and over again for years doesn't make you better at it. Listening to and accepting criticism does.
>>
>>83679733
The problem is that all of DoA's stories are moralizing, and the morals are terrible. No one is growing or becoming better or reaching accords with people they disagree with. The villains are EVIL and the characters designated as heroes can be terrible without repercussion.
>>
>>83679740
>as evidenced several issues later when the boyfriend returns, points out his new boyfriend is an enabler(which he is), then hits on him
Even worse, Ethan seeks the ex-boyfriend out of his own volition, because his self esteem demands this person who's life he has otherwise completely broken off from realize he was totally wrong about Ethan. He's literally at the guy's door, trying to shove it in his face, for no other reason than it's the only way he can feel secure in his new relationship is if this other guy acknowledges it.

>remember, if you criticize willis for drawing bad porn, you're just as bad as THEM
I never get tired of this Discworld quote, as obvious as the moral is, because we never fucking learn.

>It was much better to imagine men in some smoky room somewhere, made mad and cynical by privilege and power, plotting over the brandy. You had to cling to this sort of image, because if you didn’t then you might have to face the fact that bad things happened because ordinary people, the kind who brushed the dog and told their children bedtime stories, were capable then of going out and doing horrible things to other ordinary people. It was much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me?

Since we're bringing up Willis' bad writings and Shortpacked, Here's one that really stands out in my mind.
I still, to this day have no idea what Willis had going on in his head when he wrote this. Even as far as his soapboxing mouthpieces go, this one just doesn't make sense. Why would you bring up trans issues in this strip. This isn't even the argument you're fighting against. You just brought that up out of nowhere for no reason.
It's like having a comic about a guy who hates black people and saying "Tacos are from Mexico."
He eventually had to close the comments because people weren't eating out of his hands.
>>
>>83679733
If he wanted to keep Mary as the villain all he needed to do is switch the focus. The storyline starts with Mary being disturbed, it's very difficult for people not to sympathize with Mary after that. Willis wanting the message to be that bigoted language is never appropriate is fine too, but the fact that all Mary can muster up is an indirect insinuation that wasn't even clear to his longtime readers who follow his blog posts means that it doesn't work. Mary is less of a villain than an authority figure in an 80s teen comedy.

I figure they'll be super zealous.

First generation fundies usually are. They won't deprogram themselves if the culture they grow up with reinforces Willis beliefs, which it pretty much does.

Willis is super, super left, but polarized political parties tend to favor their own extremes over the moderates of the other side, so the general leftism present in the Nation's presence, that is the media, will back Willis's extremism up.

Willis supposedly planned for her to be a foil to Joyce but decided no one liked her. But if she was a cartoonish strawman like that all the time she'd be a funny character. Instead we get this after she's gone through hell.

Willis has done this a couple times with Mary. You think Mary is making a quip or attempting a joke because it is so unbelievably unnatural in normal conversation, but Willis clearly does want to portray Mary as this horrible character. I actually chuckled at this strip until I found out Mary was probably being serious and not teasing.

That's not a straw man.

Mary is her own character and isn't meant to represent anyone else. Not, she does not represent all christian, or Joyce's father, that mormon girl, that african girl who wear no shoes and all those other christians we have seen and Dorothy's parents would all behave like Mary.

From the rollerskating in the hallway to the Rube Goldberg is somewhere between 24 and 48 hours.

>>83681066
I'm sure Mary liking having power over people is supposed to be the implication, but since all she did was blackmail Ruth into doing her job correctly and letting Mary have a prayer session at the floor meetings it seems like Mary doesn't have any actual malice towards Ruth, or Carla for that matter.

Or she's just afraid that the violent and unstable woman who has already physically assaulted her would beat the shit out her if she did something that resulted in actual repercussions to Ruth.
>>
>>83681118
See, at this point we're just arguing what words are more harmful than others. It's part of the problem I have with assigning "privilege" to people on an individual level.

Mary is a straight white woman of unknown wealth (let's split the baby and assume she's middle class). Carla is a transsexual woman who explicitly comes from a rich and famous family (or at least famous enough that Carla expects Mary to know who they are). Does being transsexual give less privilege than the wealth her family allows?

Here is the beginning of the most recent Mary arc. I don't think anyone has collected the RA getting told off in the subsequent strips, though.
>>
>>83681264
Carla being rich but a complete outcast from her family and friends for transitioning would be a interesting characterization. Like her parents paying for everything is out of a sense of obligation and little more. But as she stands her admonishment of Ruth makes no sense as not only does she come from a loving and supportive family, she passes easily, and has only gotten a mild insult about her status in the strip itself.
>>
>>83681464
Speaking of her as a roommate, apparently Roz (other chick in the OP picture, who once literally sabotaged her sister's US Senate seat by releasing a sex tape out of spite) made Mary sign some kind of binding form. I don't remember the specifics, and I don't want to look it up, less I actually give this comic hits, but I vaguely remember something to the effect of "not allowed to refer to God, period." or something to that effect. Given that Roz later fucked a random guy (to Mary) in their dorm, I can't imagine Mary got to set any conditions of her own in that contract.
>>
>>83681489
Holy shit, I feel so bad for this girl. Like she's clearly trying to study only to be driven to aggression by that other loathsome cunt. She didnt even start off irrational either.

Like I get what's being aimed at here, "she called the trans chick a dude, that's bad :(" but. The setup doesn't work cause even if she was a cunt about it, she was still right about the intial incident? Like the two things aren't interconnected in the slightest, she said a shitty thing but the other girl was already breaking the rules and intentionally goading her. This is dumb.

It's also bad because the offense was clearly not only in response to initial aggression, but so banal in nature.

It's not like she called her a tranny degenerate from the start, and while wrong, she only resorted to it as a last ditch method to get her to shut the fuck up for a goddamned second.

It's like if she were to call her ugly or make fun of a bad grade she got.

It's not like she was initiating anti-trans protests due to Carla being in the dorm in the first place. Even if she had anti-trans feelings. she was apparently fine with keeping them to herself as long as Carla wasn't hurting anyone.

As an added measure of retardation, note how the RA ignores all of Carla's shenanigans, but materializes instantly when Mary responds in kind.

It's actually like it's satire.

Willis has reached the Omega Level: he is the lefty Jack Chick
>>
>>83681640
As far as we can tell, Mary hasn't told a soul about Carla being transgender or even threatened blackmail.
>>
>>83681464
Ruth is a monster. She's a frighteningly, and unintentionally on Willis' part, realistic portrayal of an aggressive, violent, emotionally unstable person. She's a barely functional alcoholic. She's physically and emotionally abusive to her girlfriend, whose alcoholism and self-destructive tendencies Ruth enables, exploits, and encourages so that Ruth might feel better about her own alcoholism and self-destructive behaviors. She is textbook example of someone with severe borderline personality disorder. At best one might find her somewhat pitiable, but those moments are few and far between.

I just realized. A lot more would've been on Carla's side if it were framed with Carla as the main character in this bit and not Mary.

Not only does this arc start in Mary's room, Mary's face is in 22 panels. Carla is in 19, and that's counting bits where we only see her feet. And then continuing on, Carla only really comes up do do her revenge, all the drama is on Ruth and if her relationship with Billie is a problem. Ruth only has, what, two comics where she talks to Carla, and then they never intersect again in the arc?
It's no surprise people are on Mary's side, she's been in it more than anyone else in the arc.

Yeah, that's part of it too.

Mary, as far as we can tell, has completely no interest in making a fuss over Carla's gender, and only did anything about it once, when she was at her wits' end.

That is not how you want to make your tranny hating villain, Willis. You can naturally emphasis with Mary, even if you're not a tranny-basher, because who hasn't said stupid shit in the middle of an argument?

Who hasn't gone for the low hanging Fruit?

Who hasn't gone too far or have been gone to far against?

Willis is essentially asking us to take sides between an Asshole instigator who got her fee fees hurt and a normal, for fucking Willis, girl who said something retarded in the middle of a fight.

I found the image I was looking for. I used adblock and searched the tags to give him as few hits as possible. This was back in the day where Roz was characterized as being too SJW for an SJW (shouting over the lesbian teacher in a gender studies course while also shouting at Joyce if she gets a pass for ignoring gay people's wishes, blind to the obvious irony).
Presumably the reason Roz hasn't had that characterization anymore is because that'd strike too close to #NotYourShield for his fans to appreciate.
Remember, he literally has fans that say that violence against women is fine if the woman is a bigot, so the hipocracy is already there.

Because that would make sense, and Willis already had the plot fixed so that there could be only one conclusion - Mary being pied.

Why did Mary "destroy" Carla's skates with magic glue and say that vaguely transphobic thing? To make her the "obvious" bad guy, and bring her into conflict with Ruth.
Why did Mary blackmail Ruth, instead of just reporting her to the proper authorities? Because then Ruth has time to cover up all her wrongdoings, and maintain her position as a petty dictator.
Why did Ruth never really kowtow to Mary's blackmail? Because Mary can never win. Ever.
Why did Mary grab the box. Because otherwise, she wouldn't have gotten pied.
Why does Mary never cry after she is assaulted/humilated? Because whilst that would be a normal reaction to being slapped in the face for no damn reason, or being pied in the face as part of an elaborate prank, it would make her sympathetic. See also; her absurdly archaic language, and her current strip where she is being her usual snarky self (of course, she's the WRONG kind of snarky, so she must be punished).
>>83681217
>>83681393
She asked Ruth to do her job. Ruth, being in a position of actual authority, slapped Mary so hard that a drawing of a penis she'd drawn on her hand stayed on Mary's face. Also, Mary never actually FINISHED her insult - she could've been about to call Ruth a clod.
>>83681640
According to Willis, the reason Ruth teleported in like that was so that Carla wouldn't have to spend any time feeling bad that somebody said mean things to her.

I think a lot of people miss (because it's not spelled out for them in the comic itself which is a failing) that Carla is desperate for attention and models herself off of cartoons. This was just Hijinks Escalation for her and had Mary not gone for the low blow, could have resulted in an antagonistic friendship, at least in Carla's mind.

Alternatively, if Mary had gone through proper channels or ignored Carla for a few minutes during the initial incident, none of this would have happened.

It's stated in the comic and by Carla that she was being a jerk.

Just because it was done badly and the comments there are as asinine as the folks here who unironically support Red Skull, doesn't change that it was two jerks being jerks and then one jerk crossed a line.
>>
>>83683312
>tfw you're paying more attention to the awful word balloon placement at the bottom

It's because lame's proper definition is about physical disability. So it's equating general disability to something being vaguely bad.

Think of it how 4chan calls everything autistic.

You also "forgot" the strip where Ruth and Carla are talking about how Mary used Carla's behaviour as an excuse to inflict blackmail... somehow.
>>
One thing I don't get is why everyone here is so up in arms about Mary getting a pie to the face and being told off by someone she was having a back and forth beef with when she was physically assaulted by Ruth for asking her to do her damn job.

Then I remember most of you don't read the comic and just come for the hate circle jerk,
>>

But Anon, the Midwestern Christian girl probably would've called the abusive drunk lesbian a cunt! That totally justifies physical assault and public humilation!
>>

Do people even use that definition anymore ? It's like that comic were balck princess told a knight he was racist for calling her "fair" because the word originally meant "white". If the usage of a word evolve ypu can't just bring back outdated definitions, that's retarded
>>
>>83684720
You're intentionally misreading the comic. She's saying that being trans DOESN'T mean she has to be some kind of role model. Think of how in QC Claire can do NO WRONG.

Carla is and always has been a jerk character, she embraces that. Ruta was arguing that, being trans, she shouldn't be annoying someone and Carla says "Nah" because she likes being an annoying shit.

Also Mary was blackmailing RUTH, not Carla, for not doing her job/letting people sneak in and live on campus illegally/fucking a student when she's a RA.

I'm not saying it was done well, it wasn't, I'm just stating what the intent was.
>>
>>83684781
The fair thing was also a double entendre because her situation wasn't fair.

Your post is hilariously ironic in the sense that irony has come to mean and not it's actual definition.

Everyone is cunts and no one wants to behave responsibly because it would mean giving up the privileges one gains in being a cunt.
>>
>>83684821
Carla responds to being called out on her shit by going "Well, everyone ELSE gets to be a jerk", because tu cocque is a totally rational argument, then bring up her transness as a convenient out. And AGAIN, you're ignoring the next conversation Ruth and Carla had, where all the blame was placed on Mary, because Willis had to double down on his idiotic plot to show all those mean bigots who think dorms are for studying.
>>

Has Robin's party been revealed? I imagine for a Hispanic woman to win in Indiana, she'd have to be a Republican. But Mary's hatred implies she's a Democrat...or that might just be because she's Catholic. (I get the impression that with the growing threat of secularism the Catholics and Evangelicals find themselves in an uneasy alliance and all that "whore of Babylon" stuff is water under the bridge. But what do I know, I'm an atheist Jew.)

>>83683892

Remember when this comic literally juxtapositioned sex with Walky and Dorothy while Amber was beating her father half to death?

That was so fucking odd.
>>
>>83684589
>Alternatively, if Mary had gone through proper channels or ignored Carla for a few minutes during the initial incident, none of this would have happened.
Or Carla could've followed the rules of the dorm by not skating, responded reasonably to a request to stop, responded reasonably to the statement that skating is against the rules, responded reasonably to Mary physically impeding her while reading. Also Ruth could've been enforcing the rules

There's a ton of other things that could've happened by several parties before Mary resorted to misgendering. That's because her transphobia only manifested as a 6th or 7th resort, and before that her actions didn't show any malice towards Carla. It's hate-speech that is unlinked from the source, which is a complete disdain for the person and the identity they espouse. Mary didn't show any of that. And it's even worse, because she takes any excuse to insult someone for any reason.
>>
>>83685517
Then again, if everyone behaved properly, we wouldn't have a story. And if the story was told well, we wouldn't have this lovely hate circle jerk every day.

The thing about Hispanics/Latinos is that generally their customs and values are more in line with American Conservatism (family-centric, Christian, etc.); the Democrats' promises for open borders and no deportations appeal to them on a pragmatic basis. Likewise, Liberals don't care about Hispanics or Latinos beyond getting votes out of them, especially not after the Zimmerman debacle.

>>
>>83685906
He'd been getting on Ethan's case over his hobby for a while now. So yes, Ethan is blowing up here because he hadn't been saying that his BF's comments were bothering him until it was REALLY bothering him.

The lesson, talk to your romantic/sexual partners whenever there is an issue lest it become a THING. If talking leads to it being a THING it was always a THING and you're going to have to deal with it anyway.

In this case it was, scruffy doesn't like Ethan's toy collecting and wants him to stop while Ethan doesn't want to stop and doesn't get what the big deal is, thus leading to an ultimately incompatible relationship.

It would be hilarious if a future Transformers comic featured Willis in a cameo appearance as a caricaturized super-fan of Transformers or some other toy line who lets his obsession precede his home life.

>And with us today on Channel 8 is super-fan David Willis, here to talk about The Inhumanoids.
>First of all, don't call me a "super-fan". I am a "connoisseur". Secondly, let me admit that there is nothing more important in my life than The Inhumanoids.

The issue is that Willis intended Mary's misgendering to be crossing the moral event horizon. It would be like if it was Jacob being annoying and Mary called him a nigger or told him to go to the zoo. Of course, people here would probably still be on Mary's side in that case.
>>

>The issue is that Willis intended Mary's misgendering to be crossing the moral event horizon

And the best he could come up with was "I'm taking you to the boy's dorm" ?

That's it?

She could have called her a split dicked freak or a silly man in a dress or talked about how likely it is that Carla will eat a bullet before he turns 30.
>>
>>83683892
honestly i would have expected it only because supporting Trump is what "bad people do" and Mary is "the bad guy" so she would support Trump as an example of what a terrible person she is, regardless of how little sense that may make. or maybe she agreeds with Robin politically, she just hates her because she's Mexican. i bet that's what it's going to be
>>
>>83687982

She's Mexican?
>>
>>83688011
Latina of unknown national ancestry (unless Willis mentioned it while I wasn't paying attention). She must be a citizen (since non-citizens can't vote or run for office, documented or no), so Puerto Rican most likely.
>>
>>83687982
>she just hates her because she's Mexican.

This would be consistent. In opposition to >>83685517 " It's hate-speech that is unlinked from the source, which is a complete disdain for the person and the identity they espouse." Mary has called all the DeSantos "monsters," refused to stay in the same room with Riley, Roz's elementary or middle school aged sister, and angrily stared at her in silence when Riley nicely asked Mary about cereal or summat. It would explain why she doesn't like Robin even though her views are supposed to appeal to the right-wing, Christian constituents of Indiana.

Ruth's an RA. Even if she wasn't an unreliable drunk who played favorites and practiced selective deafness so she doesn't have to help students she doesn't like, and sleeping with one of the students she's responsible for, she really ought to lose her job when she resorts to physical violence because a student annoyed her.

You'd get in trouble on any sane dorm floor if you did something like that no matter what the other person called you. If the fucking AUTHORITY FIGURE on that floor is the one doing it, something is deeply, deeply wrong.

>>83684408

This is true, but on the other hand, it's ALMOST like Mary has a very good reason not to trust Ruth to do shit to help for some reason.

Still doesn't justify getting bigoty, but I still feel like none of this shit would have happened if Ruth wasn't so goddamned terrible at her job.

The thing about Mary's "bigotry" is that from a reader's perspective, it didn't come off as bigotry at all. There was never any indication before that point that Carla was transsexual, much less any indication that Mary knew about it. Physical clues were hampered by Willis' artistic skills, implications were more or less passed off as elements of Carla's impulsive and loud-mouthed personality, and unless there was some Patreon strip that's never been leaked until now, Mary and Carla never once had any interaction before the scene where Carla was skating up and down the halls.

Mary's comment that Carla "belonged" in the boy's wing of the dorm came off more to readers as an insult at Carla's tomboyish nature, that she was less of a traditional female and more of a childish male in spirit. If anything, it was Ruth who forcibly outed Carla to Mary by assuming that Mary was directly attacking Carla's transsexual choices, which I can only conclude is just another example of how Ruth is a horrible R.A. and an even worse person.
>>
>>83690423

It's gonna be way worse than that, friendo.

Not only will the gap between haves and have-nots spread even further, it will get more complicated and near impossible to classify someone as the definitive 'Other.' What happens to a kid who gets augmented by their parents, against their will? What happens if you don't actually *own* your augments, but lease them? Who owns the metadata on your very pale flesh?

Identity will expand and pluralize, by way of reality, but that same expansion will precipitate an aggressive, reactionary collapsing of every possible indicator or identifying component into very simplistic classifications.

It is a future that we're not prepared to handle. The human mind can barely handle late-consumerism or postmodernity. How will we fare when we face those things' logical endpoints - endpoints that are in fact, infinite lines with no clear terminus?

Willis is an authoritarian fundamentalist, he's just shifted from right wing to left wing. Authoritarian fundamentalism doesn't really allow for nuance like that. He's completely serious, but his black and white viewpoint, mixed with him trying to ape what he sees in the real world, makes it really confusing to an outsider. Basically, he sees what most people would see as rational, reasonable, and relatable people and he's arbitrarily divided them into 100% 'good' or 'evil' according to his unbending authoritarian values. So when he puts copies of those people into his story he's intending them to be obviously and unquestionably evil. And then he gets mad when other people point out that they don't actually seem that bad.

In a previous thread someone compared it to Chuck Asay. Chuck has arbitrarily decided that gay people are so evil and disgusting that he didn't even feel the need to clarify this comic, he just put a straight couple and a gay couple side by side and assumed the reader would instantly know that he was trying to make a point that the gay couple is terrible because in his mind there is no question that gay people are always terrible.

The twelve points of right wing authoritarianism, by the guy who literally wrote the book on it (Bob Altemeyer). It's astounding how he did his research on an entirely different class of people, the conservative fundies who were big in the political world a decade or two ago, and yet eleven out of twelve points fit David Willis down to a fucking T (and 5 maybe fits, just with different outgroups). It's like he was doing a case study on him specifically.

The moral of the story? It's not the left or the right who are the problem, it's authoritarians on both sides who want to force other people to live by their beliefs.

It exists and it's called libertarianism. Leftists are free to be whatever kind of special snowflake faggot identity they like and smoke pot, rightists are free to spend their money however they like and not be forced to pay for things they don't agree with.

Right wing authoritarians don't like it because it means the law isn't being used to oppress the faggots and enforce their morality, left wing authoritarians don't like it because the law isn't being used to force others to give them money and stop people hurting their feelings.

4chan used to like libertarianism, before the left wing authoritarians started assaulting all the things people here like (anime, video games, comics). Now it's become largely right wing authoritarian as a reaction. I honestly think that change in atmosphere is what disillusioned moot with the site and made him decide to sell up.

That'd be a privacy violation on the part of the university. You're not required to disclose medical information and even if you did it would be a pretty massive HIPAA violation unless Ruth having that information was specifically permitted by the student.

Carla's status as being trans would realistically only be know to admissions, they had to process all her legal documents, and to residency administration. If she's had all her legal documents changed to match her gender identity it's possible that the university itself isn't aware she's trans.

>>83694536
One of the criticisms of Altemeyer is that his checklist of right-wing authoritarianism only has No. 5 and 10 as anything coming close to being specifically right-wing and elements of both of those can be found in left-wing authoritarianism.

Here's an interesting article about fundamentalism and tribalism from the left-wing about the left-wing: http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/09/30/i-can-tolerate-anything-except-the-outgroup/

>an-cap
It depends if you think anarcho-capitalism is intrinsically right wing. I don't believe it is. Consider that under anarcho-capitalism, failed businesses fail. Even if they're "too big to fail" banks. There would have been a even bigger economic crash in 2008 if we lived under anarcho-capitalism, but it would also have rebalanced the economy to the detriment of the rich and the benefit of the poor because there'd have been no bailouts. The price of housing would have tumbled even further, making poor people's living costs lower and rich people's investments worthless, which is of course why the crony capitalist system didn't allow it.
>>
>>83697028
>If she's had all her legal documents changed to match her gender identity it's possible that the university itself isn't aware she's trans.
One of the markers that she's trans is that she has a single room, I think the university knows and they accommodated her.

Then how would Mary know? Clearly it's an open secret which implies she still looks like a man.
>>
>>83697454
An-cap is anarchistic and thus can fall under either the left- or right-wing depending on implementation. The problem with critiquing the 2008 economic crash from an anarcho-capitalist perspective is that market self-correcting mechanisms swing from one extreme to the other, can take years if not decades to fully balance, and are completely removed from the human condition. Not to mention that under a pure an-cap system our economy would have been gutted by imports and foreign buyouts after the crash.

It's a pointless endeavor- in Willis and his friends's eyes, Mary misgendering Carla is violent in of itself. Plus, calling a pie to the face "violent" is pretty questionable.
>>
>>83697558
Having a single room isn't exclusively a marker that she's trans. It's also a marker that her parents are loaded, she's an asshole who drives away roommates, or that there was a vacancy in residents. Back in college a guy on my floor had a private room because of his allergies. All of the "markers" Willis used were mitigated by having several other reasonable explanations. Namely Carla being an asshole.

>>83697748
I prefer the idea that Mary knew and had feelings for Carla before the transition.

Also, "looks like a man" isn't a good indicator of whether or not a person is trans.

Carla's behavior is still reckless. Don't get me wrong, I actually love the fact the guy is there and in the race even if I don't agree with him - He deserves the /pol/ and indeed the 4chan crown just for being the greatest troll of the political establishment in modern history, but you have to be pretty deluded to honestly believe he's going to win. That same establishment isn't going to let him, because not only is all the big money behind Hillary but it's the swing-vote moderates you need in order to win an election, and they are very unlikely to back radical Trump over status-quo Hillary.

There are two possible outcomes in the unlikely event of a Trump victory - He calms his tone, tows the establishment line an disappoints his supporters (much like Obama) or he gets JFK'd. It would be very easy to set up the latter given how many people on the far left are out for his blood. In fact part of me wonders if they will let him win in order to install a third, entirely unelected leader. Watch for that VP pick, I think that will tell us the answer.

>>
>>83698811

>it's the swing-vote moderates you need in order to win an election, and they are very unlikely to back radical Trump over status-quo Hillary

Yeah, nah. In 2008 McCain was the status quo, and Obama was the radical. Trump is cashing in on the same effect. The moderates are discontent with the status quo, and so now they want change. It's why Hillary struggled with Bernie- everyone wants change.
>>
>>83698926
While I would love a Webb VP, Trump has to kill of the #NeverTrump #TrueConservative elements of the party.

A cross the board VP pick, whilst historic the only other time being Lincoln, will make the GOP have the final heart attack and give out. They won't care that Webb is a honored vet, they won't care that Webb was once a Republican until the Iraq war drove him away, they will only care about the D next to his name.

I predict a Session VP pick, hardly establishment but in line with his views and his political ally from day one.

As an aside I'd say the best political systems are the ones that aren't perfect. People tend to muddy things about a lot so the perfect systems will never work. Look at communism. Writer's intent doesn't matter when they can't make it work on page.

This script is hilarious, because that's a damn good burn. If it's supposed to be serious and offensive, it needed to have been written in a way where that's how it comes off.

>she makes some salient points about hypocrisy in politicians
>better make her a strawman again and cut her down to size

"She calls herself a family values candidate, but doesn't have a family of her own makes it sound suspiciously like she's simply pandering and is simply an ambitious manipulator" is a solid point. "I still like Reagan despite his divorce because when he ran for office, he had a strong family life and sincerely meant what he said, at least as I see it. Also, you know, I wasn't born yet, so my perspective on him is mostly framed through the lens of older voters and their impressions on him at the time."

I fucking loathe Reagan. I was alive for that shit. I have memories. I see the goddamn strings between shit he did and how ruined the world is now. And I'm still better able to articulate a respectful Reagan worshipper than Willis.

Fuck this shit. I am furious with Willis now for making me defend that piece of human garbage.

That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”

I doubt Willis has done any research outside of a Tumblr post with "The Top Ten Reasons Why Ronald Reagan Sucks", and is just playing into the meme that Ronald Reagan was awful.

Which he was, but there's a difference between "being awful" as a meme and "being awful" as a fact.

>Mary goes overboard and insults Carla's very gender over the inconvenience

THE NEXT DAY

Ruth: I won't punish you because you're blackmailing me, but at least apologize to Carla. I know she can be a handful, but that was over the line.
Mary: No, I refuse to apologize

And boom, Mary's established as the bad guy in a way that fits naturally into all the characters.

Instead, she insulted Carla, then did premeditated evil to RUTH by blackmailing her, only for Carla to get revenge.
>>
>>83707192
I think he's talking about on DoA.com.
>>
>>83706926
That's kind of like saying hating Hitler is "a meme" if all you know about him is that he killed Jews.

Not knowing all the reasons to hate someone doesn't stop the reasons you DO know from being valid.
>>
>>83706798
I disagree, I think this is one probably his best "Mary is wrong" strip. It reads like some 18 year old who has never paid attention to politics outside of what other people have said. She's right to question Robin's claim as a family values candidate, but her parent's divorce, and, to some extent, her age and her being single don't matter. You don't need a spouse and three kids to care about family values, especially considering Robin comes from a home with divorced parents and significantly younger siblings. Robin's Catholicism can be a valid point even for the non-Whore of Babylon fundies as Catholics trend more liberal in certain areas. Pointing out that it's hypocrisy that Mary holds Robin's parents being divorced against her but not Reagan's divorce against him, along with the astrology which most fundies believe is a kind of devil worship, isn't a bad thing either. What makes this work is that Roz simply points out Mary's hypocrisy rather than reveling in it. It also helps that Mary is, once again, correct.
>>
>>83706926

bringing up astrology and divorce, is some pretty obscure for today's standards attacks on Reagan.

if it was just wiki quick look up bullshit, he'd be talking about Voodoo economics, the Iran-Contra affair, and the accusation that Reagan had dementia or early stage Alzheimer's while in office. Most people don't remember that Nancy Reagan consulted astrologists in the white house, it definitely isn't a common attack on his legacy. and even the average 'religious right' type voter could care less about divorce in this day and age.
>>
>>83706531

What year does this comic take place in? Mary's 18, she should have only vague memories of George W. Bush, with Obama being the president for the entire time she's been old enough to be politically aware.
>>
>>83707411
Sure, but "killing six million Jews" isn't quite as complex as "wrecking the economy for decades to come". You can explain the former in six words, but the latter takes more than that.

Reagan-hating became a meme because people hated Reagan for legitimate reasons that they would never elaborate upon.

>>83707605
Fair enough. Maybe Willis outright DOES just have a severe hate-boner for Reagan.
Though this starts veering into Chuck Asay territory again in a way.

>>83707639
2010, though the sliding timescale puts it in contemporary times seeing as Robin is a blatant Trump parody.
>>
>>83707639
Sliding timescale means she was born in 1998. When the strip started she would have been born in 1992.
>>
>>83707411
I'd say it's more akin to saying hating Hitler is "a meme" if all you know about him is that /pol/ likes him.

Well, as I remember it, technically it was Nancy Reagan who was into astrology not Ronald. He just went along with it.
>>
>>83707686
Most people can't even pin down the reasons for him wrecking the economy. Despite what people will say, supply side economics will work however there has to be a very specific set of conditions - the benefit of increasing production and labor has to exceed the expense of doing so otherwise a company will just take the tax break and subsidies and do nothing - Reagan's main fuckups were the massive deregulations and continuing use of supply side economics when the conditions weren't right.
>>
>>83707605
It's less an attack on Reagan than it is a way to highlight Mary's hypocrisy for loving Reagan even though he did some really Anti-Christian stuff during his life.

Well, just think about how expensive VCRs were when they were first made - $4600, adjusted for inflation, and now a VCR-DVD combo is super cheap. Is this some sort of Metal Gear webcomic?

>Are you even aware of how much our current situation in the Middle East is rooted in Reagan's actions there?
Those seeds were sown during WWII when the US agreed to let the Saudis spread their Wahhabism in return for oil, and the situation was exasperated by the financially crippled French and British empires having to pull out of the Middle East and North Africa and leave it to the tinpot dictators and warlords. Reagan barely figures into it, and I say this as someone who's no fan of his.

I wish.
It's actually one of Willis' previous comics, back before his writing skill went to shit:

So, Thomas Edison thought he invented a Ghost phone.

Newton Thought he could turn lead into Gold by drinking Mercury.

>Regan
>brilliant

The only brilliant thing was how he could literally say that he was lying to americans and get away with it.

I'm not, I don't really know about Reagan.

I'm just saying that trying to invalidate one's actions in one field by saying he liked [crazy thing] is not valid

The only political figure of any merit is [Lucius] Brutus

Maybe it's his equivalent of kids who plaster the walls with Malcolm X and Che Guevara posters without actually knowing what they're about. Like them, Mary's using Reagan iconography to be 'rebellious'.
>>

Ugh he's such a douche. And people feel the need to back him up for some reason...

Also, nice job getting Willis to crack enough to explain what he was going for in the comic. He was genuinely tilted.

I'm kinda surprised he doesn't pull a Todd McFarlene or an Aaron Diaz and just whip out his Patreon stats when someone's giving him criticism.

Everything would be better with Metal Gear. Imagine how if Carla was driving the Metal Gear Rex through the hallways instead of roller skates!
>>
>>83717546
>I'm just a trans good at what he does...skating
>>
>>83717546
Would that make Mary's glue a weapon to surpass Metal Gear?
>>
>>83717546
>>83717727
Carla would be Volgin in the Shagohod and Mary would be in the motorcycle's side car with her glue. Jesus would be driving.

The weapon to surpass Metal Gear was introduced in MGS1.

>How do you distinguish that from everything else you own that vibrates

Out of the mouth of any other character this would be excellent snark. But since it comes from Mary, the designated hate-machine, it's bad.

He did write her as bantz master in this strip.

He doesn't make enough money. God knows there's at least a few anons that would laugh his whiny bitch bank account out of town.

Willis makes a little more than half what Jeph Jacques pulls in IIRC.

Jeph doesn't make that much money, though...
