Variations aren't the same as what they're doing with this game. The customization options in this one are being handled like a f2p game, from what I understand, with some RPG elements. The more you play a character, the more 'loot' you earn, which you can use to alter a character's appearance and abilities. Knowing WB, they'll also tie lots of DLC into this bullshit too. It might not even be just moves ala custom moves in Smash 4. It might be full-on, "this bit of gear gives you more health," or "this one makes you way faster." This doesn't even remotely sound balanced.
