Good evening owls of /co/,

IT'S TIME
>>
BOOM
>>
>>83615642
SO: what was good, what sucked, and why, today

I read Wondy and was kind of "okay"
>>
>>83615642
Hello Storyteller.

That cover is ... something.

>Apokolips Now
That pun is almost certainly the deadest horse in the 4th World's history.
>>
>>83615711
The only good Rebirth one shots were the Johns one, Green Arrow, and Aquaman.

I said it in one of the storytimes but they mostly feel like the DCYou previews.
>>
>>83615711
I didn't read Action or 'Tec, but I liked Aquaman, Flash, and Wondy enough. None of those 3 I'd call bad
Tho the Flash artist needs a new inker and to not draw people with crossed arms

Vision was kinda sad today
Her phasing up through the ground from the boy's grave was so creepy
>>
>>83615711
All the Rebirth stuff is very much about saying here is the character and it's just meh. I get they want to explain everything for this do-over but if you're a long-term fan you want to read something showing the character is like you want, not a long illustrated narration where they tell you they are.

Nothing has had much of a good hook so far.
>>
>>83615711

I was so mad about Wondy seeming to do another "wipe it all away clean slate for her" again. And that lettering made it unreadable. I'll give the first Scott issue a try but...

Flash was more fanservice so I loved it. Art is growing on me and the writer seems to like and get the Flash family so I'm optimistic.

New Avengers was a lot of place setting for the new arc.

Vision is still the best book.

i haven't read anything else yet
>>
>>83615711
It was basically just meta posturing and some setup, but I'm still looking forward to his proper run

Flash was alright, kind of clunky in a few places. Aquaman was pretty much just exposition on "who is Aquaman and what does he do" but it had qt Mera so I will give it a pass

>>83615750
>I said it in one of the storytimes but they mostly feel like the DCYou previews.
shit that's exactly how they feel, like extended previews. I'm going to hold off on real judgement until I see the actual #1s
>>
>>83615711
>I read Wondy and was kind of "okay"
It's very obviously just set up. Though I kinda dig the implication that Rucka's going to make the constantly shifting continuity a part of the mythos.

Also, I'm a little disappointed that I was apparently the only one to notice the spoofing of Finch face on this page. >>83594752
>>
>>83615786
Also that WW issue could have tapped much weirder backstory stuff from her long history rather than Rucka immediately throwing out what he didn't like about recent runs.
>My name is Diana and I... work at a fast food joint?
>>
>>83615711
The Vision was great as usual.
>>
Thunderbolts was bad but better than expected I guess

>>83615798
I think people are overreacting about the WW stuff. I think he'll likely only fix the Amazons.
>>
>>83615842
Thunderbolts has some neat character beats in both this issue and the first one, but as a whole it just isn't good.
>>
>>83615711
favorite Rebirth issue of today.
Flash > Wonder Woman > Aquaman > Detective >>>>>>> Action Comics

Also Sheriff > Vision > rest of the stuff
>>
>>83615711
this art is great
>>
>>83615842
Yeah I think people are overreacting to WW, a lot of it was left ambiguous. Nothing really struck me as clearly being "FUCK AZZ, HIS SHIT'S ALL GONE" like I have seen some folks saying

although even if he was doing that it's par for the course for the character, welcome to Wonder Woman bitches
>>
>>83615842

i'm worried about throwing out the baby with the bathwater i guess? But stuff like crushing Ares helmet just felt like vindictively angry at nu52/Azz Wondy

>>83615816

i expected more superboy prime jokes
>>
>>83615727
>That pun is almost certainly the deadest horse in the 4th World's history.
You're wrong because they made a much worse Out of the Silent Planet one right after >>83615711
>>
>>83615862
I didn't read Thunderbolts yet but I gather the letters in the back are all ZOMG BUCKY?

I didn't read Flash, either--was it di Giandomenico on art?
>>
Another week, another chance for DC Comics to reprint their Rebirth line. They only came out today…

Action Comics #957, Aquaman Rebirth #1, Flash Rebirth #1, Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 and Detective Comics #934.

Look for them all on the 6th July. They will all feature the original cover but with a recoloured Rebirth banner. Maybe something like this…
>>
I've been gone for three months because I couldn't afford internet.

What did I miss?
>>
>>83615862
>>83615902
Yeah it's really good. Those up-close face shots, and the use of the bars, really gives everything this skewed mad vibe.
>>
>>83615711
New Avengers still having tons of fun and doing more with CWII than the main book ever will.

Wondy is very much the same reaction for me, but damn, some people are really assuming Greg's gonna throw everything out, when it's almost certainly mostly going to be the Amazon backstory to get the most drastic change.
>>
>>83615902
This kinda summed up Wondy for me:

https://twitter.com/DavidUzumeri/status/740568817626054656

As in: I get what he's doing, but I would have worked to find a more clever and lively narrative way to do it, I guess, even though I've seen people really happy with his Diana voice.

>>83615930
Ummm: we finished LOSH, and we read this really great run on Captain Atom.
>>
>>83615902
>I gather the letters in the back are all ZOMG BUCKY?
most of them were, it's pretty clear he's the main draw for the book

also one letter was literally "can Bucky and Steve kiss?" why on earth did that get printed

>I didn't read Flash, either--was it di Giandomenico on art?
yep
>>
>>83615930
Captain Atom.
>>
>>83615950
Was that the Greg Weismann run? Fuck.
>>
>>83615957
It's not always pretty, but I usually like his art, so I'll give it a look in a bit.

>>83615972
Yeah, Bates/Weisman. Which means further reading is going to be "How did everyone else fuck up everything good about that run", alas.

>>
>>83615902
>I gather the letters in the back are all ZOMG BUCKY?

Yeah, pretty much. >>83598896
Even one that was clearly #givecaptainamericaaboyfriendthatisbucky
>>
>>83616004
I didn't mind the art on Flash but the story basically just retold the Johns issue from Barry's perspective. Not bad but I read it already, you know?
>>
>>83616004
>I see you believe random mystic bullshit
>I too believe random mystic bullshit
>let us culturally appropriate each other TO THE DEATH
>>
Oh, also, there's that whole "Captain America #2 gets massive pre-orders", but that's comic shop buying, not actual sales, and I don't think that buzz can last. Turning up the hate machine gets a boost, but it almost never actually nets new readers in any significance, even for an entire arc.

Also, I really, really think the entirety of Marvel and Nick Spencer included has underestimated how much both this twist promotion and Steve in specific are going to eat into Sam's sales.
>>
>>83616004
This is muh Poison Ivy

>>83616030
how was Action? And how was Tec, was it the expected Batfam extravaganza?
>>
What exactly was so great about Action?
>>
>>83616030
It's not irrational. He's literally shitting on Superman and people are accepting it just because they're told it's the one from the continuity they liked despite him acting completely different.
>>
>>83615884
>>83615895
>all those Azz-fag tears
People got absurdly angry at the helmet being crushed. Never mind that Diana herself says she shouldn't be able to do that, and it's the first indicator that something's wrong.

Not even really sure why that was such a big deal. Absolutely nobody did anything with the God of War thing anyway, so even if it got erased, it'd be no loss.

Kirby homage.
>>
>>83616076
'Tec was just ok in my opinion

I don't care about the batfam that much and was more curious to see how Tynion wrote them
Though I've been seeing mixed opinions on it
>>
>>83616098
A lot of people liked Azz's Warbro self-insert.
>>
>>83616052

Giving Cap a boyfriend who's not Bucky is rising on my list of "What I'll do if I ever get to big 2"

>>83616064

I wish Spencer had done more "You know you can always read about the not HYDRA Captain America" trolling.

I think the buzz is working though we'll see in a few months.
>>
>>83616076
>>83616052
christ, why would you print that
>>
>>83616098
Really, there is so much that there was just absolutely nothing done with from that run. God of War shit was clumsily tossed around, co-existing with the Manazons was a fucking Finch nightmare and even Azz's handling of that was last minute glossing over shit, just lots and lots of potential that ended up sitting around like a wet fart. Like being permanently trapped in a prologue.
>>
>>83616004
Why isn't there a Ravan: Mongoose Against Kobra miniseries?

It practically writes itself. It's basically one of those issues where Larry Hama'd have Snake Eyes do a solo commando run against Cobra.
>>
>>83616076
Detective was just introducing the readers to Kate, Tim, Steph and Cass basically. Not bad but nothing particularly interesting happened.

The ending seemed to imply Arkham Knight is the villain? Or at least someone with his exact same shtick.
>>
Why are people surprised Cucka doesn't give a flying fuck about previous run and just wants to write "his Wondy." He pulled that shit when he took over after Jimenez as well. Ignored pretty much everything that came before which I think was a better run. There's a reason Wonder Woman comics don't work and it's essentially this, no writer respects the work of previous one enough and there isn't enough consistency.
>>
>>83616138
Ravan is a crap Thuggee. No yellow strangling scarf, no freaky Kali imagery.
>>
>>83616128
huh, what IS it about the Wondy lettering, but I don't really like it either. The Dr. Fate lettering is also a bit off standard somehow.
>>
>>83616032
That skirt really could stand to be a touch longer, but hey hey, Gold is back.

>>

Wondy's lettering was very Blambot-y.
>>
>>83615711
Kaijumax was good, as always.

>>83616181

>>
>>83616098
>Never mind that Diana herself says she shouldn't be able to do that, and it's the first indicator that something's wrong.
This

It wasn't saying FUCK AZZ'S ARES AND THE GOD OF WAR!, it was saying she shouldn't have been able to do that and something is clearly fucked up

>>83616172
>what IS it about the Wondy lettering
it's oddly placed and the font itself resembles comic sans a little too much for comfort?

also unrelated, but the Sugar & Spike story was great today
>>
>>83616176
I wish they keep new 52 tiara.
>>
>>83616032
So many people were mad over that, even though there have been previewed covers featuring that outfit for months, and it honestly being a better costume.
>>
>>83616172

i'm going crazy that no one is mentioning it.

>>83616208

it was hilarious and in issue 1, so i thought it might've been seen in the wild.

>>83616076
>This is muh Poison Ivy
Bondage Queen radfem ecoterrorist?
>>
>>83616222
"Truth is the first casualty of War" was repeated several times and one of the upcoming covers has a very evil looking Ares.
>>
>>83616030
Superman was a retard and if you think about it comic doesn't have an actual plot. Dialogues are awful, voices are awful. Also I found art in Tec better but I'm simultaneously pissed off that Eddy Barrows is wasted there.
>>
>>83616125
Maybe they should try reading Rucka's first run, so they'll realize that he'd like that take on Ares, as it's quite similar to his own.

>>83616161
>"Writer's should never try anything new, and all comics should be exactly the same."
Uh huh.
>>
>>83616250

i kept waiting for the lasso to explode or something
>>
I've seen a lot of Tim and Cassfags bitching about Tec, I guess Batwoman got to boss them around or something
>>
>>83616258
At least Barrows is too slow to do the third arc

IIRC 'Tec is the first book confirmed to have a fill in writer and artist? After the second arc, I think.

>>83616222
Oh shit I totally forgot about S&S

brb

I'm basically hoping that Rucka puts things on an even keel, we get a nice story, and there's shit that's usable and that whoever comes next doesn't get allowed to retcon at will but is required to write a contrasting run.

>>83616249
she's not actually a radfem, Waller calls her on her 'feminism' explicitly
>>
>>83616161
New fans who think Azz is the definitive Wondie run consider an accurate Wondie sacrilege.

Azz WW may as well have been called Wonder Woman Earth One in how much it threw out in favor of a somewhat edgy new interpretation.

Rucka Wondie isn't "his" Wondie, it's how she's fucking been for decades.
>>
>>83615711
Wacky Raceland was fun, but nearly crippled with bad art.
I say nearly because it could still overcome that if it plays it cool in the next few issues.

Also, I have a plane to catch.
Hope to catch these threads next month.
>>
>>83616281

>>
>>83616172

Edge of Oblivion was pretty shit

They finally gave some attention to a few alien lanterns for a few panels who were either new or background fodder, as they died! Guy said a lot of cliche shit! Baz was like "hey maybe this giant tear in space is how to get home???" and nobody else listened, then it had a total non-ending. it also ignored literally everything Lost Army brought up which I now assume will never be resolved, it didn't do anything to answer the mystery of how the GLC ended up in the dead fucking universe anyway, it basically accomplished nothing except having a GLC book on the stands for a few months

Fuck you Taylor
>>
>>83616413
Writers should definitely take note: If your story reads just as well, or better chronologically, bite the bullet and fix it.
>>
>>83616281
Yeah that's why.

You now remember how Tim wasn't even the leader of his group of friends for the longest time so it's not like he should be bossing Batwoman around, lol.
>>

Oh what's happening with the Inhumans now? I just can't even pay attention to them lately.

>>
>>83616468
Like, go on about Tim all you want but Kate's an aggressive woman in her mid to late 20s with army service in her history, it's entirely within her character to boss around a babyfaced teenager, prodigy or otherwise.
>>
>>83616300
>Rucka Wondie isn't "his" Wondie, it's how she's fucking been for decades.

>>
>>83616473

the cliffhanger for thunderbolts is Crystal and her team showing up all "The fuck did you guys do?!?!?"
>>
>>83616300
She literally changes her schtick every time a writer takes over famalam. I've read Perez, WML, Jimenez, Rucka and Simone. This is Rucka doing what he wants to do. Know what? When Snyder takes over her schtick will change again. There's never enough consistency and all world building and setup goes into trash.

Oh I'm not a Azzarello fan and I want shit to go, I'm just making a comment that people are surprised even though he literally pulled this shit years ago as well. I just hope there's a good enough foundation set and Rucka doesn't go full retard with his ocs that nobody after him will bother using.
>>
>>83616518
Her supporting cast and concept may change, but most of those writers kept her character intact, because believe it or not they actually did research the preceding runs. Not that Azzarello threw out all her characterization, but if he did understand it very little of it showed.

The idea that every writer tries to reinvent her is a myth, IMO. They give her a new supporting cast but everything else is pretty similar. Rucka's run was a breath of fresh air for not just making everything about mythology.

>>83616515
I think people want to be able to point to one OGN or run and say "That's [character]", and that everything else should be exactly like that. Batman has it with TDKR, Superman has it with All-Star (as much as I think both of those are very far from what the characters are really about), and since a lot of people jumped on with N52 they want Azz Wondie to be that for her. And some people want Perez Wondie to be that. But a character isn't one interpretation, they're the culmination of everything they've been in over the decades.
>>
How about that E2 reboot set-up?

That's stupid, and leads to stagnation. If everyone does the same thing over and over, it gets boring.

>but most of those writers kept her character intact
This. Even with different interpretations, usually, the core of who she is is still there.

Much as I absolutely loathe to give anything vaguely resembling credit to Finch, she did at least portray Diana as a sweet and loving person. The problem was that she also came off as an idiot who doesn't act like a damn adult.

EARTH 2: SOCIETY ANNUAL #1
Written by DAN ABNETT
Art and cover by BRUNO REDONDO
Earth-2’s Batman is Dick Grayson. Does he have what it takes to be a true Batman and follow in the legacy of Bruce and Thomas Wayne before him? Or will he only ever be a stand-in? Beyond anything else, he has one overriding goal...to find his missing son. Is that a job for the Batman...or is it something only Dick Grayson can do? The Wayne legacy is at stake. This is an epic turning point in the history of Earth-2’s Batman.
On sale AUGUST 31 • 48 pg, FC, $4.99 US • RATED T

Pls be the end of this Bat character infesting Earth 2

I get what it is, I just find it weirded out by how hypocritical it is when /co/ starts being snarky at non-cape readers for "limiting" themselves.

>>
>>83619025
I never said anything of the sort, I personally, don't understand why anyone would limit themselves like that. It ain't got nothing to do with capes, dude.

Hell, Storyteller has run non-cape books, mostly fantasy stuff. Amethyst, Mage, Grimjack, Warlord...
>>

>>
>>83619086
this innocent ingenue act is really wearing thin
>>
>>83619086
I might not have been clear, but I'm speaking broadly, and was more pointing out that we're all on a board that's just as limited, if not more so, than the "NPR srs business comics" crowd. I'll throw stones at /co/ for being limited just as much as other groups, thank you very much.
>>

>This July, Marvel NOW! officially arrives, and Marvel Comics is throwing a special midnight celebration in order to mark the occasion. On July 13, participating retailers will release "Civil War II" #3 and "Marvel NOW! Free Previews Magazine" at the stroke of midnight.

>According to the official press release,
>Who will fall? That’s the question on everyone's lips, as one of the biggest heroes in the Marvel Universe meets their end. Who is it and how will divide fans for years to come. It all happens in "Civil War II" #3 -- and you can be one of the first to find out! How can the heroes of the Marvel Universe survive after the unthinkable happens? As the war escalates to new heights, the table is set for Marvel NOW!
>Plus -- fans in attendance will have a chance to get their hands on the "Civil War II" #3 Midnight Variant. Debuting at the midnight release and polybagged to conceal the identity of the fallen hero, this variant cover features artwork by none other than Marvel CCO Joe Quesada!

>Additionally, the "Marvel NOW! Free Previews Magazine" -- which arrives at no cost to fans, but is available only in comic shops -- offers a first look at the publisher's lineup of Marvel NOW! titles. The magazine will include "huge reveals, new titles, creator interviews and more."

I'm proud to say the only Bendis I've ever bought is the first issue of Secret War, and that's all I own of him period except those two Castle Derrick Storm graphic novels he did that I got as gifts(that all told, weren't that bad. Maybe because less established character, maybe also because he's better at mystery stories)
>>
>>83619326
Bets that someone's going to leak it like those amazingly detailed #1 leaks
>>
>>83619283
Oh, wow. This cover implies a very one-sided match up.
>>
>>83619326
Are they even trying?
>>
>>83619271
>Niggas, please. Damn that hivemind nonsense.
I'm making generalizations because they're largely in line with what the board talks about. I'm not saying /co/ needs to change, just that I don't understand how people can limit their tastes to just one thing.
>>
>>83619360
so glad we got Snyder back on layouts for last issue of this arc
>>
>>83619326
>Who is it and how will divide fans for years to come

lol

>>83619360
That would be amazing

I wanna know if marvel discovered who it was or are more tight lipped about this kinda info as a result of the leaks
>>

Darkseid's principal weapon comes from his eyes.

Have you ever seen him fight blinded?
>>
>>83619340
You know, I just now realized that Ostrander does a very good New Gods. I'm surprised, I didn\t think most capeshit writers had it in them.

Sadly...I believe they are. They refuse to do the one story that would actually gain attention. The undoing of OMD Spider-Man.

>he's just a ham-handed asshole with no skills at manipulation beyond yelling at people.

Ah, so completely accurate to the Grant Morrison version, then.

So, are they just not going to tell us who died?

will bleeding cool keep their mouth shut!

they seem to have a better deal with marvel than dc
>>
>>83619444
Didn't Mephisto show up and talk to Peter in Spider man/Deadpool?

Cause if he did and anyone at marvel remembers the clause then I could see them trying that ~one story~
>>
>>83617985
NO! NOT CHOPPER DAVE!
>>
>>83619436
Uh, how? Anon said one group was limited, I pointed out that we share a board with others who are limited. This isn't a personal attack, I'm not even putting a value judgment on being limited.
>>
>>83619430
Ben's got that "Well, now I've seen everything." stare.

Well speculation is Bruce Banner.

Does Bendis like or dislike him?
>>
>>83619401
>I don't understand how people can limit their tastes to just one thing.
... But that's what I was saying. So we agree. Why are we arguing?

>>83619416
It all comes back to making the New Gods seem dignified, despite how ridiculous they are. Sure, they look like a bunch of goofy chucklefucks, but they'll fuck you up proper and pleasure themselves to your tears.

Again, if writers would stop overusing the guy so much, he could actually be pretty damn cool like he's supposed to be.

>>83620402
I think it may be due to the desire to make everything EPIC!!!, but when everything is big, nothing has any impact.

Capes need to go back to their urban fantasy roots.
