He kept fighting a war for god knows how many years, saw the dream torn to shreds one too many times, had to adapt to a different world when mutants went from being the future to being on the endangered species list, had to play a game of numbers with the lives of those who trusted him to ensure as many survived for as long as they could, hard decisions led to comrades becoming hypocrites and condemning him, and finally when a light finally shone at the end of the tunnel and a miracle that could reignite the dream was a genuine possibility, the entire superhero community along with some of his old friends came in to crush it out of fear, fear of the unknown tomorrow.

Avengers wanted to move Hope to the moon because Phoenix Force was fucking up anything that was in the path between it and Hope. Tony built a gun to kill the Phoenix but it only split it into 5 parts. Also, nobody goes Dark Phoenix unless you constantly fuck with them, but it was a Bendis event so everyone was expecting him to ignore previously established things to make it seem like a bigger deal than it was.
