Tyson, at least early in his career, was plenty skilled and technical. I'd go so far as say that he was a boxing prodigy. His footwork was superlative for a heavyweight—he was great at cutting off the ring. He didn't "follow" guys around the ring, he herded them (one of my favorite subtle Tyson techniques was the way he would "touch" opponents to the body with short, half-powered hooks to stop their lateral movement). His upper body movement and educated feet also allowed him to get inside his opponent's jab in a way I haven't seen since the great Joe Frazier.

Tyson had an underrated ring IQ, but because his punching power was so impressive, it was the only thing most people remembered about him.

The problem with Tyson was really his inability to deal with adversity in the ring. Once Buster Douglas showed that he wasn't going to crumble under Tyson's power, it seemed like the fight left Iron Mike.

I will agree, though, that the post-prison version of Mike Tyson regressed as far as his technical skills. It's like stopped caring about technique and just turned into a half-committed brawler.
