Why is animation so damn inspiring? It's like, shit, at times I don't even realize I'm looking at cartoons, the performances are just so seamless. A short little pencil test is more impressive to me than something like Space Odyssey or Hugo. Why would I rather stare at sketchy pencil work or flat colors than reality?

>“Privisa” - an animated family feature.
The movie is set in the era of the first slavic tribes, ancestors of the nations from Central Europe. It tells the story of 11-year-old Wilkan, his father Borzymir and grandfather Stanimir, who try to save their village. This is an epic story about family, life choices and growing up.
Project in development, international presentation of the concept took place Cartoon Movie, Lyon ( 2-4th March 2016)

Maybe this sounds retarded, but something I've never understood is how when someone spends tons of time painting or drawing a single picture, people take it very seriously, but as soon as you draw too many pictures and place them one after another and play them back very fast, suddenly it's juvenile and impossible to take seriously.

I'm not trying to say every flipbook drawing should be compared to the mona lisa, but there is some incredible artistry in animation. Single frames can look absolutely gorgeous, but as soon as you put it with a bunch of other frames the majority of people's brains shut off and go "hurr durr cartoons are for kids"

Considering it was done by a different studio which did all the other sequels which had shit animation, this one was pretty good. Hell, I liked the animation more than the original. It was just more colourful and more fluid, and that CGI flight scene. I still remember seeing it in the cinema back then because mc donalds were giving out tickets with happy meals.
>>
>>83566579

Think about it. If you are unable to find inspiration in anything, all it means is that you don't think outside your little comfort zone very often. Your thoughts and ideas are all inbred which has led you to become vacant of idea and thought. Hence why you're a cynical shell of your former young self. However long ago that was.
>>
>>83566620
All it means is that one has an understanding of how things work, and that makes it less interesting.

>inb4 scientists
Scientists are a bunch of retarded nerds who geek out over irrelevant crap.
>>
>>83566520
It's not that I'm a particularly negative person, I just feel more comfortable in a negative environment at this point.
To be fair, I actually did a lot of animation growing up an was involved in several communities dedicated to the subject. I think I just get slightly triggered whenever the topic comes up on this site, and that's basically down to the fact that I can never quite shake the feeling that nobody actually knows what they're talking about.

I mean, besides the desire to make others feel as shitty as you do.

It'd probably take a few years yeah.
If you worked on it constantly like it was your day job then you could maybe pull it off in a year or so.
But then you run the risk of burning yourself out.
I'd so go for it as a hobby.
>>
I remember I did a bunch of stop motion shit with Legos and clay at an after school program for like a year or two.
It was fun as fuck and got me into animation.
Haven't done anything since, but might pick it up again when I improve my drawing skills.

They are both based on Touhou, an independent game series that's been produced by one guy since the 90s. There's nothing generic about his character designs.

It's a shame one of the few shows that actually cares if the ANIMATION is good in an ANIMATED SERIES is ending. I mean, I like all cartoons from Clarence to Steven to Star and Mike Tyson. But none of these shows really do anything with their animation. Even with Steven's board rules of going off model and having lots of exaggerated faces, the animation itself kind of butchers it and it usually feels like they're simply moving from Point A to Point B rather than making the in-between journey fun to watch. Does this dumb spiel make sense to anyone?
>>
>>83572815
To tell it short most animated series from 60s to today are missing the point of animation.
>>
>>83572957
Yeah, basically. And I don't expect everything to move like Disney. I understand TV budgets. Like, Mike Tyson and Venture Brothers work for what they got, and that's great, especially since their designs are much more complicated.

South Park, Aqua Teen, and Space Ghost are funny because of their limited animation. King of the Hill is suppose to reflect reality and does a really good job at that.

But something like We Bare Bears should have fantastic stretch n squash animation but instead, the characters are ALWAYS on-model and sterile and flat. So what's the excuse there? Why CAN'T those shows have some fun with their animation? Why did shows like Billy & Mandy or Spongebob get so stiff in later seasons? Spongebob was already low-budget. Just keep it fun.
>>

There's something really interesting about the keyframe process that only animation can do. Like, it's an incomplete scene, it's not even in motion, it's just the "idea", but you can see it, and you WANT to see it finished. Seeing the work process of animation is cool, sometimes.

There is nothing limited about anime. If you're using nothing but half-shots of samey-looking girls, still but for a looping wind animation in their hair, that's YOUR fault and not the medium's.
There's maybe four seconds of actual fluid motions in those vids of yours combined.

The animation style of anime is called "limited animation," as opposed to the "full animation" associated with Disney for example. Nausicaä is no exception.

>There's maybe four seconds of actual fluid motions in those vids of yours combined.
The Memories of Phantasm one has a lot more than that, so you're just making things up here (which is very typical when people are trying to attack anime). The Summer Day's Dream one doesn't have that much, but the brief fight scene has good animation and the production values are excellent (I was not talking about just raw animation, because animation doesn't exist in a vacuum).

Touhou's characters are also hardly "samey looking." You're just regurgitating a common meme without bothering to see if it actually makes any sense.

Animation is inspiring, and I hope one day to be half as good as the stuff I'm seeing in this thread. There's so many different techniques options and outcomes, it's just amazing. Just like >>83547565 said, even the simplest things can be creative and there's so much you can do with the medium.

Pic-related is something I spent a few hours doing in April.

How is "heres are gallery of generic anime girls drawn by the developer himself" prove your point? It still bland looking crap thats barely distinguishable from the thousands of other unimaginative hacks churning stuff out.

>>83576194
I'm actually curious about what you actually think looks good in that gallery.

My friend is currently in animation school and just finished up her first year. Her final film was only a few seconds long but I remember hearing every night from her how tiring it all was and in the end it took over 400 drawings. Yet in the end she still felt super rewarded.
>>
>>83576218
It's solid keyframes for a walk cycle, even if they could be improved, but what I like about it is that it's trying to emulate an old illustration look with the sketchiness and watercolor. One thing I love about animation is that you can incorporate textures and techniques to make it visually pop. Would you like it to look like watercolor? Or a comic book? Or an oil painting? Hell, you can use a pinscreen to animate if you wanted.

First the argument was about whether they are all same looking, then you start talking about whether or not they look "neat."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mrWA0uIbL8

But hey look, that video still shows you can tell a solid story using a narrator and almost no animation at all and kids will still eagerly listen. That's usually what I think of when I hear people say they want to do ____ but can't draw. You can still make it work to your advantage, just think creatively on how to use your limitations. Like this guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJBt2V5-Q-E

He didn't let the fact that he couldn't draw like Glen Keane stop him from making a short film.

>Tell nothing about the character
Marisa is a witch and her appearance reflects that. Reimu is a miko and her appearance reflects that. Cirno is an ice fairy and her appearance reflects that. Sakuya is a servant and her outfit reflects that. Tatara is a personification of an umbrella, and she keeps trying to surprise people. Both traits are reflected in her design. And so on.

>Bland color pallets
The color palettes for Touhou characters are all over the place. Some don't have a lot of color (Marisa) while others have a lot (Clownpiece).

>All pretty much have same faces
Sameface is a meme.

>Nothing interesting to distinguish them from the crowd of amateur anime artists and designers
This is just a more verbose way of restating that they're "generic," and of course they actually aren't.

Why does everyone hate CG so much?
>>
>>83579834
We don't. I posted some CG examples throughout the thread. It's just that people who specialize in CG don't struggle as much to look for work. They have video games, feature film, commercial work. 2D animation has been canned, outsourced, or replaced in America so it's much harder to be profitable as one, which means it's a lot harder to make a living off a 2D animator so anyone who still breaks through those obstacles and continues to do it just for the love of the medium is seen as more admirable.

For the most part, it's really just independent animators and students who are keeping non-outsourced animation alive (With some commissioned and commercial work here and there).

Hell, even 2D puppetting and rigging has taken over and pushed traditional frame-by-frame animation of the way.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQboscYOV3Y
Even though this stuff is still good, you see it A LOT in commercial work. I'm in the process of searching for work in animation studios either as a 2D animator or a storyboard artist and the majority of them want After Effects animation, no one is really seeking frame-by-frame work. Which just makes it more appreciated because we don't get to see it that often.

So it's not that people hate CG, they just miss America actually doing 2D animation. Frame-by-frame as a job is pretty much dead in the U.S. Every now and then Steven Universe will have Jeff animate something, but it's not the same.
>>
>>83580258
Adding more to the post. Something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2m2WueNcU
Is basically considered "retro" or "throwback" in the animation world. It's sad that frame-by-frame animation has devolved to being "old-school".
>>
>>83580258
None of that stuff is relevant to me, but I still don't like CG.
>>
>>83579834
It's easier to like a pencil test than blocking.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wog7ratP6yc

CG isn't appealing until the final product, whereas 2D animation is nice to look at even when it's basically scribbles.

Not that I hate CG, just saying why people might like 2D more.
>>
>>83580498
Also CG ages worse than 2D. Old Popeye cartoons still hold up visually but something like Antz is hard to look at.

Sure cg-animation has saturated the market, but with foreign and indie movies I feel like about 2 or 3 genuinely great 2d animated movies come out every year, which is about the same ratio of quality as when traditional animation was taking in millions. I even saw 2 really good hand-drawn animated films in the theatre over the last few months. Does anybody else feel this way? That despite cg becoming more popular, and mainstream studios not going for 2d, we still get a bunch of wonderful 2d movies every year?
>>
>>83582992
>That despite cg becoming more popular, and mainstream studios not going for 2d, we still get a bunch of wonderful 2d movies every year?
The difference is that we get a couple of good 2D films once a year worldwide vs. a couple of good in just America alone. America doesn't contribute to that list anymore, so the amount has shriveled. It's just that before, you didn't have as many film festivals or pirating options to go ahead and download Plague Dogs when it came out. And now Europe and China are tapping into the kids CG market. Once players like Plympton and Chomet stop making films, we're gonna have to rely entirely on Asia for 2D features.

But it's true. Playing the piano or recording a little skit with your friends all happens in real time. But just to rough out three minutes of animation can take 1 - 2 months.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53HcAfgxctU
This took Toniko a month to do and it still only reaches two minutes.
>>
>>83548396
What's the source for this?
>>
>>83577354
>Marisa is a witch and her appearance reflects that. Reimu is a miko and her appearance reflects that.

Those things aren't character traits though - those are accessories. Good character designs are able to reflect more than just the most basic surface layer and aim to capture the more subtle nuances of a characters personality and demeanor, and even more abstract ideas like a character's role in a story or the overarching themes in their story/character arc. The reason people call Touhou's designs "generic" is because his characters are so devoid of these things that you could insert his characters designs into any old anime and no one would think they're out of place because they have no distinguishing design traits of their own outside of shallow decorations.

The fact that you can't describe anything about what these character are actually through they're designs besides "they're an X" is indication enough of how bland they are.
