Fuck yes it's time to read some Calvin and Hobbes

Going to start off with one of my favorite arcs, with a gorgeously drawn, beautifully colored Sunday every 3 or 4 strips.

It's a magical world, let's go exploring!

Good. It's not suited for animation.

Not because it's the sacred cow it is, you just can't convey the same movement and beauty of Watterson's art in animation without a budget worthy of bankrupting Disney.
>>
>>83520279
The voice of Calvin would have sucked, and the delivery on the whimsy would never have had the same impact.
>>
>>83520151
Drawing something like this in class today would get the police called.
>>
>>83520377
Plus how would Hobbes work, imaginary or real

Watterson didn't want animation to settle the issue

I believe it has to do with the unwillingness American parents have explaining sexual situations with their children.

She would rather just put him to bed, and he is questioning why anything to do with "kissing" gets him landed in bed.

Wow I forgot about that. It was great to read as a kid and actually be invested in Hobbes being real and the people in the scenes where Calvin wasn't alone just not being able to see it. Now there's a little melancholy mixed in when my mind forces me to imagine him moving and talking for the Hobbes doll. That comic allows you to justify believing.

>I feel like if it doesn't matter whether Hobbes is real or not to you then you're missing out a bit. It's not exactly a mindless kid's comic.
I don't think Watterson cared either. Imaginary Friends can be a narrative tool without being a plot device. Sometimes you have to take things at face value. Hobbes is a stuffed tiger or a real friend depending on the context.

>I prefer the fan strip where Calvin is put in a straight jacket. It's fine if he was a schizo or whatever, as long as he wasn't just pretending.

This was the very first Calvin and Hobbes strip I read. When I was young, I got a whole stack of book collections, one of them being Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat. Naturally, I opened that book first, and this was the first thing I saw. I didn't quite understand it at first, since this page was clearly designed for those who were already involved with Calvin and Hobbes, but this page introduced me to a wonderful series of stories about a boy and his tiger.

This Sunday strip will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.

He's got a point. One, it's pretty obvious what he's doing, so there's not really a need to ask, and two, he's not going to implicate himself and get himself into huge trouble, so asking him what he's doing is barking up the wrong tree
