I still don't know what the final message in all Karkat's Terezi-centric shit was, in the timeline that unhappened. He became obsessed and in love, got NTRed (not cucked), then he started to let go or at least appear to whilst still caring a shitton for her, but Terezi was all hesitant and shit about anything Karkat said to her, then Karkat tried to break her clowndick addiction, then Karkat died to her clowndick, then everything got undone and none of that ever happened, came close to happening or got any kind of parallel to see how it'd be done differently.

Kazerad would be ordered to serve a life sentence in Webcomic Penitentiary for second degree murder. Over seven thousand signatures would eventually be gathered in a petition asking for his release, and in 20XX, 4chan would pardon him. There would be no eulogies for Hussie, no art books of his would be sold in hobby stores, no people would crowd the streets in the rain to see his funeral cortege, no biographies would be written about him, no children named after him, no one would ever pay five dollars to purchase Hiveswap. Prequel would update, and IGPD would scream, but Hussie would only lay on the floor and look at the ruined MSPA website, the light going out of his eyes before he could find the right words.

With Gamzee defeated/killed, Equius becomes disillusioned with the hemospectrum, but still has authority fetish, so he becomes Karkat overly eager second in command, who keeps order on the meteor purely because everyone, including Karkat himself, is creeped out by him.
Equius then turns out to be the actual "mystery character" who subdues grimbark Jade by punching her in the snout to establish dominance

It's hard to say anything conclusive with Equius, Gamzee and Nepeta given the extent of their possible abilities. In particular, whilst Equius' ability to just destroy things isn't questionnable, how adept he is at fighting is given he just seems to smash things? We don't entirely know how he'd deal with an opponent who can use actual tactics against him, such as the bow and flash stepping about, given we don't know how adept the robots he fought were. Same problem with Nepeta, she lived as a near-savage troll hunting wild animals with no problem; so arguably she should be one of the most combat adept of the trolls in meele terms along with Equius, Gamzee and Feferi.

Gamzee's cloun powers too could have given him the edge, certainly over Nepeta as the subjugation part of the chucklevoodoos could have kicked in.

Well, whilst it's a legitimate complaint against Terezi and how she handled the whole retcon situation there are things to be said in her defence. Primarily she was near death and wasn't really fit to think straight given what had just gone down.

She drops down dead soon after sending John on his way, so she had to quickly think of the one thing which could likely change their end without straying too far from what had already happened, to ensure if it went wrong again they could control the changes better the next time. The obvious problem being she could have likely had John save Nepeta and Equius very easily had she thought of the events leading to their deaths.

That's why I've always felt that Karkat never revealed that he sent Equius to his death, so Terezi wouldn't know how to avoid Equius' fate and thus Nepeta's too.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was when Equius and Gamzee didn't end up fighting, for the very reason you listed. Insane strength versus insane speed. Add Nepeta into the mix as the wildcard that could tip the favour to either side and you'd have had an amazing moment in the comic.

Though I wasn't sure if Gamzee had increased durability due to his purple blood. I liked to imagine the higher up you went on the spectrum the more durable you were, given that the more noble blooded trolls had increased lifespans and seadwellers need to survive both in deep ocean and on land. But you're almost assuredly right that one full strength punch would splat the clown.

Something like a character refusing to change or a character actively becoming a worse person are arcs just the same as a character bettering themselves over the course of the story.

But what's important about Equius's death is that the comic acknowledged that he failed to change. His death was karmic and it had a direct impact on his loved ones. And down the line he even felt remorse over it.

Lot's of characters in homestuck refused change as people, but most were never punished for it, if it was even acknowledged in-comic at all.
That's what made Equius's arc and actual arc and not just a shitty writer writing a shitty story.

We'll never truly know the thought process, but he likely didn't care about those characters designated as joke characters. It's odd as he started off using secondary and tertiary characters well for main character development. A good example being the guardians for the kids, or Nanasprite for John in particular.

But when it came to the trolls he completely forgot how to utilise them, which showed with how the main trolls ended up as character development messes as the story progressed. It's one of the oddest aspects of Act 5 in my eyes, side trolls not being used correctly at all and instead stealing screen time from the main characters we're invested in with no payoff.

Well I wouldn't call it an arc then, if he hasn't changed at all it doesn't meet the definition of an arc as such. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially given he was never a main character and shouldn't be held to their level when discerning how he should be handled in the narrative.

However, it means he didn't experience an arc, he just didn't change and that was a part of his character and the effect it had on those characters linked with him (Nepeta) and the plot as a whole. Again, not a bad thing but not an arc.

the story was constantly improvised. hussie didnt plan the exact arcs of the trolls in advance, or who would be the most significant ones aside from the original four and vriska. he just laid out enough threads that he can grab the ones that fit best later and keep weaving. and it happened that gamzee's tied better and better into everything as things went along whereas the others' didnt. this is how improv storytelling works. if you want a story to be released how homestuck was rather than all in one perfect bundle then youve got to accept it for what it is.

Unlikely, Karkat has way too many deep set issues to make for a quick fix.
