When I first started watching, I really liked the idea that, being aliens, the gem's bodies weren't originally humanoid. That they made their default appearances human-like after living on Earth and having to interact with humans.

I don't know specifically, it just seems like aliens naturally looking so much like humans even before the two species ever meet would be unlikely (well, depending on how much weight you put on convergent evolution, which is probably at least a good enough explanation for a kids show that might not ever go into that much detail about it anyway), and them originally looking more alien could be neat.
