Your childhood cartoons were just a cover for a fraud,

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/cinar-weinberg-matteo-xanthoudakis-guilty-1.3612967

tl:dr version: CINAR's ex-ceo is going to jail for scamming 120 million dollar.

>Weinberg, who founded Cinar with his late wife, Micheline Charest, in the mid-80s, and his associates originally faced dozens of charges, including fraud, forgery, using fake documents and publishing a false prospectus.

DIC is still pure so I'm good
>>
What did Cinar do?
>>
>>83420230
CINAR was The Busy World of Richard Scarry, Arthur and Caillou.

In this particular case they defrauded the company for 120 mil$.

They've never been put on trial for this, but they also stole millions of dollars in government subsidies.

Earlier the company was also found guilty of stealing the intellectual property of Claude Robinson. The creator gave a design bible for his project to producer Micheline Charest. Then CINAR made the whole show without ever payment Robinson. The guy nearly killed himself when he saw his show on TV.

>That money could have gone into the cartoons they made and made them better
>or they could have made more cartoons

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE
>>
>>83420485
>>83421085
I wonder how much they paid their writers
>>
I know people who worked at CINAR in the 90s. Weinberg knew nothing about cartoons. He was either a snob or an autist who didn't speak to animators. Someone went to tell Weinberg he had a phone call. He just ignored him and continued his business.

When Robinson started to accuse CINAR of stealing his OP, the directors and seniors in the animation department were making fun of him, calling him a conspiracy theorist and encouraging the staff to join in the fun. There is no way some of these higher ups didn't know. They worked with the bible Robinson gave to the producers. They knew they were working with stolen goods and encouraging the employees to bully the victim. One artist last year was complaining how Robinson destroyed their cash cow. "Plagiarism is normal in animation. He should have never been allowed to sue." It's like that Itchy and Scratchy Simpsons episode.
>>
>>83420485
>>83421432
Why didn't Robinson shoot the place up or bomb it?
>>
>>83421416
A lot of their writers used fake names for fraudulent purposes.

You get a subsidy for hiring X writing artists. You hire less than that and you keep the change.
>>
>>83421561
He looks like a hippie, I think he would have killed himself first before hurting anyone. He fought against all odds for over 10 years. Personally I would have slashed Weinberg's and Charest's throats and raped their cadavers in front of their kids.

>>

Imagine though.
Robinson's wife is watching TV.
"Oh, your cartoon is finally on TV?"
What? That's not possible, that must be something els....
He sees his intellectual property on TV. Something very personal for him, based him and his friends.

That's how he discovered it. There are people who have gone psychotic for less than this.
>>
what the hell how has this not become important on /co/

this is fucking arthur we're talking about, the meme show

and fucking zaboomafo which was my fucking life
>>
>>83422612
stop projecting your desire for mass murder on a cartoon, retard.
>>
>>83423090
It's a Canadian company.

By the way, Micheline Charest, Weinberg's wife and co-CEO, would have gone to jail too. But she died on the operation table while getting plastic surgery. I wonder if she intended to take the money and run.
>>
>>83423147
I'm not projecting my mass murder desires, I'm expressing them.

/co/ is actively disinterested in learning anything about how the media they consume is made because knowing how the comic and animation industries actually work is depressing.

A shame, I think. Often times I find how an end product is made to be more interesting than the end product itself.

Arthur
Zoboomafoo
Caillou

This is the board where a lot of Anons think the Western animation industry should take inspiration on the labor practices of the Japanese animation industry, where artists are treated like slaves. When the Western and Japanese production costs are compared, most Anons thinks Western animation costs too much, when actually it's the Japanese animation that costs way too little. Of course then there's crooked producers...
And that's depressing.

DIC doesn't even exist anymore...
>>
>>83420485
So.. this guy ripped off Robinson Crusoe.. and another company also ripped off Robinson Crusoe.. so he goes mad and claims copyright infriengement when he himself stole the work. Hm..
>>
>>83420230
Literally who
>>
>>83425791

What's the point of arguing this when you know that almost every western traditionally-animated show is outsourced.

You're comparing Japanese animators to something that practically doesn't exists in the US.
>>
>>83420260
What? Cinar, DIC and Cookie Jar are all owned by DHX Media.
>>
>>83426600
That's what the defense said and they lost.
>>
>>83426651
Japanese animation is outsourced in Korea and China and Best Korea,
>>
>>83426858

Only a fraction of inbetweening work is outsourced from Japan to Korea, largely due to deadlines rather than cost. France does the same thing. For the US, it's a budgetary and resource allocation issue.

Low wages is better than no wages.
>>
>>83426976
They outsource so much that Japanese animators have to live with their parents.

Who the hell do I have to write a scolding and strongly worded letter to letting them know I am disappointed that their embezzlement may have robbed me of more shows, better quality episodes, and the like.
>>
Their cartoons all sucked.
