The notion that Lil Cal fucked with his head was an interesting one to me.

everything bro did was done out of a desire to train dave into a competent sburb player.

problem is that dirk is a sperg and he probably had the cal ensemble fucking with his head.

It's hard to say he was malicious when the guardians had no personalities other than what can be inferred from the alpha kids.

I've always really enjoyed Equius as a character and I always wished that we survived his encounter with Gamzee and became a major player in the plot.

But at the same time, I really feel like he was one of the few characters that actually got something of a satisfying arc.
Yes he died in a arguably dumb way, but you can say that it wasn't a way we couldn't have saw coming.
The fact that he spent his entire life a racist weirdo with domination fetishes only to die to just that was one of the few character appropriate deaths we had in the comic.

My biggest complaint really was that he was a joke character. His first panel in the comic was super ominous and from his introduction on down he just got sillier and sillier. Even ARquiusprite, who would "become" one of the most sinister characters in the comic was largely a joke character who really only did off-screen plot shit the main cast couldn't be bothered to do.

She's a god tier with racial telekinesis and possibly better than human durability. She's got time powers which have high combat utility, but we don't know enough about Maids to know if they're very combat focused. Aradia also doesn't seem to have any high power weapons, using her generic whip against LE. Of course, being a god tier she could theoretically use any weapon she could disarm her opponent of.

I think you're supposed to realize later on that the weirdness of John and Rose's parents are actually misguided acts of kindness seen through the lense of a thirteen year old. The revelation that came with finally seeing Dad's room was that he wasn't really all that into clowns and pranks and goofy shit. It was something John showed interest in at some point, and Dad tried way too hard to connect with him through that. The worst part of raising a teenager isn't all the new sorts of trouble they can get into, it's the fact that they just don't want to be around you anymore. Any attempt to engage them is, "God, just soooo lame, Dad," but you keep trying to hold onto the relationship you had when they were younger.

In that vein, it's possible that Rose's mom was never actually being passive-aggressive towards her. All the pampering and pillowing was completely sincere, because remember, Rose's mom is an alternate version of Roxy, possibly the most genuinely kind and helpful human kid. One of the first things we see Roxy do is try to help Jane in wooing Jake. She persists in this when asked not to, and it's really none of her business, but Roxy is the kind of person who will help you even when you don't need or want it. With this in mind, it's easy to see Rose's mom doing such things completely without irony. It also helps that she's probably drunk when she has these great parenting ideas.

Also, I thought it was baby Jake (the one who grew up to be Jade's grandpa) who beamed down and accidentally shot Colonel Sassacre. And that he just had the pistols when he was transported.

See I think the more major issue with the trolls is that as we learnt more about them they just became wacky crazy humans in the end. They could and should be more alien, which would in turn make them more interesting through the discovery of the differences in comparison to human culture, and I don't just mean having funny-literal names for every item similar to something we have on earth.

It's a difficult balance where they have to be similar but different in alternating places to make the most of what should be a fucked up alien race. That's one of the big aspects of Homestuck I enjoy to this day, even if half of the trolls are walking joke characters they're vibrant as far as alien species go as there's enough interesting variation and weird culture to work with. That's something Hiveswap could possible channel, it's a long shot and I have little to no confidence in anything associated with Hussie any more, but in theory it could happen and it could at the very least be interesting.

I think the major thing Hiveswap would have to do to have any modicum of success is to stand on its own, without Homestuck playing a big part in it. There's so many issues from Homestuck that it could only drag the story down by trying to comment on it. As such Hiveswap would be best served sticking to the interesting concepts from Homestuck but not outright being intentional fuel for Homestuck's backstory. Then there's hope for it, if the characters are interesting and you quickly care for them and their plight, that's an issue in Homestuck due to the stupidly huge number of characters who hog up screen time.

A simple story with interesting themes and characters you care about, interacting with this weird alien race. I could enjoy that.

In a weird way, Homestuck became an ouroborous of its own death, relying so much on callbacks and self-content to create self-content that it ended up banal and tired after not too many spirals in. While the whole work relied on its time-based themes of repeats of repeats, it went on too long and was not kept fresh and interesting enough after a while that it dragged the whole thing down into a sort of creatively bankrupt self-masturbatory mess.

I feel keeping user suggestions would have helped with that, and was one of the secret ingredients to the comic's wild success to begin with, along with a few other factors.

To this day it amazes me that there wasn't a clear divide on who the main troll characters were. In addition to that, even though there were clearly trolls meant to be the main trolls the screen time would just fitter off onto the less prominent trolls, instead of using them as supporting characters to the actual main characters. It's mind boggling as the trolls were initially that for the 4 kids, they were support cast to develop them, interact with them and make jokes.

It's a formula that clearly works so why the fuck not stick to it? Have the less important trolls and their stories be very minor things, only seen when it has relevance to the main trolls or kids. That way the story stays on track, you can develop numerous relationships and characters outside of the main cast when applicable and people aren't forced to stomach characters taking the spot light when they're not relevant to the main narrative. In addition, fans of those minor trolls aren't punished for liking them, it's fine to like supporting characters if they have a role. It's quite common for supporting/secondary characters to end up fan favourites without sacrificing their role as a tool for the main cast or plot.
