Batman's the only thing I'm planning on picking up.

I didn't think that article was all wrong. The internet is a total game-changer, but twitter/modern internet in particular isn't any different to what went before in terms of this argument. Just more accessible, shallower, quicker.

Hoot hoot JSA anon

Some Ostrander SS to read while Blood&Wine is downloading? I've had worse Tuesday nights.

Douchebag told a fan to kill himself and regularly bullies people on internet, pretty hypocrite of him to criticize someone on their internet tendencies.

It is, on some level. I hate that Farci has a point.

Hell, remember when Simone questioned the whole thing some time ago? About being a fan of things without actually partaking in them?

holy shit i did not expect such an explosion

i like faraci's writing and agree with most of that piece and i wish the criticism was less about one line that conflated #LesbianElsa and Ghostbusters hate that was interpreted with the minimum of faith behind it.

>interpret w minimum good faith, attack w maximum rhetorical force
>>
>>83358860
You never, ever, ever get to have creative control of something you are not the or a creator of. It's that simple. You aren't entitled to anything beyond the product, which you can choose to buy or not.

This is especially true with blatant commercial comics like the ones we read. You could argue Dave Sim betrayed his readerbase (IMO you'd still be wrong) but you definitely can't argue Nick Spencer did.
>>
>>83358860
I love fandom's inventiveness (and sometimes I marvel at its perversion) but I've become really aware of and cautious about how people try to exercise control in it, and try to extend those things to creator interactions because Twitter and other social media make everyone so very accessible. It's not like the moderated newsgroup wherein JMS would answer B5 questions but moderated so you couldn't post story ideas.

I can't believe how many people had to have "coffeeshop AU" explained either, but that's just a sign of my wasted youth.

there's not that much that's really focused on him, is there? Parobeck JSA, and those Morrison issues for Jakeem intro, then Stealing Thunder

Could you imagine pre-fratricide Nightshade having this conversation with this dynamic? It's like she's transgressed so massively that all transgressions mean less to her.

If you think back to her mini, she is so much more timid and under direction in her one-to-one with the priest there. Here, she's the one pressuring Flag.
>>
>>83359265
Eve's hair is inspirational, I guess.

>>
>>83359092
>that point on Black Panther
It's true, people saying the sales were because 'outside' people got interested because of Coates are really wrong. It had 15+ variants + shop exclusive variants + #1 + movie appearance. Coates had little to do with that high number. Even the people that picked up their first Black Panther comic because of reasons were comic fans.
>>
>>83359370
Now the trade, however, is going to be killer
>>
>>83359092
I actually saw people complain about Rebirth's second printing being 5.99. And I was like, yeah well it does suck if you didn't manage to get a copy when it was 2.99, but it's of higher quality AND for 80 pages it could still be higher. CW2 #1 is, what, 56 pages total and 5.99? If CW2 were 80 pages it probably would've 10 dollars. Maybe even more because why not.
>>
>>83359298
Seconding this. Was not expecting a scene like that from Suicide Squad. Great stuff.
>>
>>83359358
It's why Nightshade, further on - not leading the Squad, but above that, maybe in Waller's chair - feels like it could be something great. But the Wall is kinda irreplaceable.
>>
>>83359370
There's also the question that no one all delighted by those huge sales wants to look at--how many people read it, might have enjoyed it, but weren't excited enough to go back to the shop the next month and pay another $3.99 for another short installment?

I would like to hear from a variety of individual retailers about who came in to buy it and who comes back, because it's such an interesting test case of Big Name Writer and Character Everyone Liked In A Huge Movie.
>>
>>83359265
The inker changed, might just be that
>>
>>83359415
$10 for an 80 page one-off is a pretty hard sell compared to like, the Image trades.
>>
>>83359456
OH SHIT HERE WE GO

>>83359423
Skwad Rebirth has Rick coming into play (maybe because movie?), but I wonder if Williams will pull in Eve eventually as well. She's such a huge part of this original run.
>>
>>83359415
Second print costs DC more on production because not nearly as many copies. People are retarded that know very little.
>>
>>83359482

>were comic fans

I was reading an interview with Barry Windsor-Smith and he said the happiest he ever felt in comics was when his barber told him that he had never rad a comic, but knew Smith made them so he went out and bought an issue of Archer and Armstrong and really enjoyed it. He talked about the need to reach " civilians" and how magazines like TCJ and Wizard really just preach to the choir

I don't know what's to come but her political connections and social skillset give her a whole other avenue to go down.

Rick Flag and Deadshot cannot charm a fucking senator. Eve could.

>>
>>83359092
>I honestly think Marvel can get away with almost anything at this point.
>I don't think Marvel cares. They seem to be immune to price points.

I'm still annoyed how Black Panther #1 was 4.99 but had like 3 extra pages and how 4.99 is apparently their standard #1 price point now.

Then DC itself seems to almost love reminding me why I became a Marvel guy.

>>83359645

I think he was on the nu52 team for a while and he's a big bruiser type for them to have
>>
>>83359645

>>83359629
Well now you get 3 of them.
>>
>>83359629
I know, but...sales. Normie dollars. If it takes him and Will Smith and all that to get a good Katana costume, an accurate Waller, and SS trades? And maybe bringing black comedy in over quips?

I'm fine with that. Wish there were more Waller merch, but whatever.

Nah, Croc's never been on the team.
>>
>>83359690
I don't think fandom is broken so much as journalism is broken. Or more broken.

Though I've heard it said that the peak of identity-politics clickbait was actually a couple of years ago, and readers are now starting to get bored with it. But the problem remains that comics journalism is a weird mix of regurgitated corporate press releases and politicized commentary.

well, I mean, they ARE

they do a LOT of 7.99 and occasionally 9.99 Deadpool books and other specials and nobody gives a single fuck about the price

>>83359782
Most of it is they're small so you can have a lot of them and they can be pretty cute
They also make them for franchises that don't get much merch and those fans can get thirsty

I don't hate seasons, so much as I hate renumberings with the same creative team for obvious sales reasons.

If they're attached to creator runs ending and let people do runs in different continuities, where applicable? Neato. If you're going to hop onto a new status quo, do it big-time. Take us back to the 80s as the 80s status quo existed.

I wouldn't say panicky. ANAD was a big failure (in large part because they underestimated how weirdly anal people would be about starting series before Secret Wars ended). Rebirth is heating up and, with Marvel being Marvel, they need to divert attention from it.

Admittedly, the return to "Marvel NOW!" is....dumb. But hey, they're the masters of spin. They'll figure out how to make it work for them.

I don't know if this has gotten worse but it annoys me that fans and journalists alike feel entitled to speak for entire groups.

Like it's not enough to say "I don't like this kind of art," it's become "this kind of art drives girls away from reading comics," even though there's no actual evidence that it does.

I guess journalists projecting their own tastes on "the people" is a common enough thing now that I think about it.

Nothing is sacred on the Internet, and as Rule 34 tells us — if it exists, there’s porn of it somewhere. Blizzard’s recently released Overwatch is apparently no exception, and those making Overwatch porn are starting to get hit with DMCA takedown notices and their NSFW Overwatch content is being removed from various services.

A reddit user posted that he’d received at least two DMCA takedown notices for Overwatch videos he’d posted on Pornhub. The problem might not be the content itself, but rather the method in which the content is being generated. The redditor, spornm, used the Valve Source Filmaking Kit to rip assets from Overwatch and then creates his videos using those assets, which is most definitely grounds for a solid case by Blizzard.

I think a great idea would be one of those pull-out or cut-out surveys that you used to find in really old comics.

Maybe have a big+rare prize for it. Maybe convince the LCSes themselves to accept the surveys and mail them, if the readers are too lazy. If maybe 5-10 readers do it in every LCS, you'd get a decent sampling of the actual buyers, not the pirates or the "i don't even read comics but i feel my opinion matters" crowd.

IIRC, Shueisha and other manga compaanies did/do the same thing, mostly to see which series people are actually reading in their anthologies.

pro-warnings: it's responsible to the community and people within it to put warnings on your fic for things like death, rape, etc., and if you don't you're hurting people

warnings-skeptical: it's not my job to take care of your mental health, and I might not agree with the labels that you want to put on my fic, especially dub-con.

It got really ugly and personal, in part because it was about control and people who really disliked certain things getting to shame others who liked them.

That's what I want, yeah. That would be a doomed but great book idea.
>>
>>83361895
It was largely a Kelly Sue creation, I think. I didn't like the book much but she was very canny and clever at using the media and social media to build what looked like a fan community for it.

Now that Fazekas and Butters are writing it, the quality is actually better, but they're not full-time comic writers so they don't have time to go around promoting it.
>>
>>83361296
>Nick Spencer followed me until today. He knows I'm struggling with depression, but he decided to paint a target on me anyway.

But the creators are the ones that need to look past their entitlement?

I hate to agree with Faraci but he's totally right for once. Just look at the Felicity fangirls railing on Gail Simone just for being upset about Black Canary dying on Arrow.

Or when the Felicity fans, because I could offer up a mountain of their bullshit, attacked DC's main twitter page for posting a Green Arrow/Black Canary image on V-Day. Or sending death threats to Katie Cassidy and Amell's wife.

Or the so called fans bombarding Brubaker for HydraCap even though he isn't the writer. Or sending Spencer getting death threats because people don't like a story decision. I don't like it either, not entirely because of MUH CAP but more because it's a tired story I wish Marvel would stop doing but Spencer doesn't deserve any real harassment over it.

Seeley got shit for Grayson, King got shit for Omega Men, Amanda Conner got attacked for Harley's relationship with Joker, the list goes on.

These people don't owe you shit. And they sure as hell don't deserve to be treated like crap over comic books.

So for anyone confused about why Deadshot is crying and calling Flag Eddie.

Floyd's older brother was named Eddie and everyone loved him, especially Floyd. One day Floyd's mom tries to get her sons to kill their dad, Eddie is on board Floyd isn't. Floyd tries to stop Eddie but he screws up his shot and kills him. Deadshot now seeks out figures to fill that big brother role like Flag and Batman because Eddie was the only person in his life that he ever felt any attachment too
>>
>>83362076
Yeah, being a comic book writer today means being an enterpreneur, especially at Image. It can't be fun for the writers who are good at writing but not self-promotion.

One thing I see a lot is the idea that you can't complain about people's behavior if they claim to be doing it in the name of a higher cause.

So if creators start complaining about death threats, they're derailing the conversation about the highly important issue of representation, or marginalized groups who get death threats, etc.

I barely read Monica Rambeau, but I loved Captain America Corp enough that the concept could work with any legacy hero. Hell, the character interactions alone would be great. Can you imagine Mar-Vell meeting his kids? How would the two of them, who seemed to become Captain Marvel out of duty, react to these two humans who chose to take the title, one of whom never even knew he existed. Fuck, did Phyla ever actually KNOW about any of these people? She on Earth for just long enough to get in Moondragon's pants. Given how mad she was at Genis not taking the name seriously, she'd probably get annoyed as hell about Monica and Carol.

I saw this today which honestly struck me as profoundly confused about how Image works:

twitter.com/weggbert/status/737677766817124353

Image is a place where you, the Creator With Name Recognition can pitch your creator-owned work in hopes of making more money or that big payout movie option. If you are an unknown artist, you might get good work with a known writer; it will not be the unknown writer who manages to float a book, I suspect.

>>83362254
Okay, I really feel your pain

also because we'll get to Generation Lost eventually in our How They Fucked Up Nate readalong

one more? I've been draggy, sorry, dog/drama (but we're not reading Invasion!)

>>
>>83362315
>If you are an unknown artist, you might get good work with a known writer;

Confirmed for not knowing how Image works. Teams approach Image with a completed first issue; Image does not pair talent and never will.
>>
>>83362315
>If you are an unknown artist, you might get good work with a known writer

Which I guess is one of the main goals of Island. I'm pretty sure outside of KSD's text piece about her dead friend in the first issue that magazine has not featured any Big 2 talent that went to Image after making it big
>>
>>83361429
Why do these fandoms never realize that Fay representation in mainstream movies will never happen. If you throw an LGBTQ character and expand even a bit upon those, shit gets censored in China which is second biggest market of mainstream movies but also in parts of Europe, Asia and maybe America. Not to mention people hate seeing LGBTQ characters genuinely because they're fuckwits of worst kind. Like which was the last summer blockbuster these people saw with gay representation in not just an ordinary role if at all?
>>
>>83362362
Yeah, I got into an argument with someone once about "should you ever walk back a diversity retcon" and brought up Tora, and got the feeble defense of "that was just bad writing"

>>83362407
clearly she will do like the Four Good Emperors and adopt, anon. You make sure you don't get axe-crazy that way.

>>83362411
Oh, I meant that "You might be successful at Image as an unknown artist who's been picked up to do the work by a known writer", but an unknown writer is almost never going to be able to sell an Image book.
>>
>>83362411
Now I'm thinking there should be a THE PRODUCERS for comics where a washed-up writer and a young artist team up to make the worst comic ever written, raise more money than they need to publish it, and keep all the money.
>>
>>83362411
How do you get that out of that statement? Could be the writer approaching the artist.
>>
>>83362411

He's the villain from three of Batman's most popular films. And Batman is hugely popular. You may not remember Bat-Mania, but Batman '89 was the height of huge.
>>
>>83362447
>an unknown writer is almost never going to be able to sell an Image book

I see plenty of them, they usually just fall off. It doesn't matter as much if you're unknown if you know someone who is already in

Peter Pan wasn't a mainstream movie?
>>
>>83360442
Well, there's always been a heavy element of weeaboo in the entire Richard Dragon corner of the DC Universe. For good and for bad.
>>
>>83362514

I think the problem with Joker recently is that in the past he was just treated as another villain. A one-two off issue here and there.

Now he's an event level threat and that kind of kills things a bit.
>>
>>83362572
Hellboy too. And Lord of the Rings.
>>
>>83362514
Plus on the cartoon he was the dominant villain. Penguin wasn't great, Catwoman had to be a semi-good-guy for much of the run, and Riddler wasn't used much.

So unlike the '60s series where the Joker was just one of four top villains, people who watched the cartoon found that the Joker was clearly the best.

>>83362632
It's that the shipping was sooo much of the engagement in the fandom that it overshadowed everything, and people get obsessed with shipping even beyond anything else.

I was always fond of the people who wrote Ray/Ray just to break the oppositional cycle.

I find Wheeler is very brittle when it comes to taking criticism of his own work and positions, even from the same political/cultural side. Which is a bad thing to be when you are 1) writing a book that you are 2) pitching specifically as meeting an unmet need in the market and thus being innovative and 3) running a specifically critical/analytic comics website.

>>83362581
Well, he's more or less always been Batman's #1 Top enemy, so he's always gotten used a bit more heavily than the others, and only really took off as an 'event villain' in the 80s, with DKR, Killing Joke and Death in the Family solidly cementing him as THE Bat-villain.

But after that, he actually fell back a ways to regular villain status, because 90s Bat events were more dominated by Bane and Ra's.
>>
>>83361278
But they didnt have the spider-man movie rights when they give him his shitty cartoon and still billing him as there top hero so why are they so pent up about the x-men and fantastic four
