How does the fact that one animal pun based ad, among the dozens in the movie, actually made them money, detract from the experience/remind you the universe is made up? The only thing that keeps the movie from being a 10/10 for me is that stupid Shakira song and the product placement. Just use an actual score made by, you know, the fucking world class composer you hired.

The product placement with mis-spellings of actual company names or slightly changed logos (fuckin' prominent cell phone logo, we get it it's totally-not-apple-product-placement) felt really sly rather than clever or funny. I fucking hate advertisement though so it probably bothered me more than it should have.

The designers for the movie could've easily made something more clever from scratch.

This pisses me off especially 'cause I like the movie so much and so much love went into it, and then they have to smear it with this corporate shit.

Not to defend shitty pop music, but it's a pragmatic marketing move to wrangle in a celebrity for the added exposure. Seeing as Zootopia already got stuck on the ass-end of Disney's marketing engine, it makes even more sense for the producers to grasp at straws. Besides, aside from the song and an admittedly shitty line, Shakira/Gazelle is thankfully absent throughout the movie.

And is there anything confirmation that all those Zootopian brands are indeed contractual product placements, and not just clever/shitty puns to make the world more believable/relatable? I'm guessing a lot of people here went in fearing the message was going to be too preachy and SJW-soaked, and quite fortunately, it isn't. If anything, the fact that even the supposedly open-minded Judy is guilty of the very same sins she condemned was a brilliant touch.

As far as the whole 'Try Everything/Be What You Want to Be' moral, it's touched a little less upon. While the movie did do good in relaying that simply wanting something badly isn't always going to be enough, I do wonder if it emphasized that point well enough. Bogo looked like he'd be a vehicle for that message, when he was chewing out Judy for breaking protocol in her enthusiasm, but as best I recall, his point is never returned to again. It's never really made clear whether Bogo was keeping Judy down in an attempt to humble her ego, or if it's because he's simply another bigot who thinks a bunny would never make it as a cop; And with very little emphasis on the former, he ends up looking like the latter. At least, until she proves him wrong and earns his respect.
