I mean, despite being steeped in the lore, it's a pretty straightforward story.

>Dude is trapped outside of normal reality.
>Tries to get back by talking to people he knew.
>Sinister new villain is lurking in the shadows.
That, and the obvious set up for other stuff down the line (Long Live the Legion) make it pretty accessible.
>>
>>83327279
>which is exactly the opposite of what the hand-wringers who think DC haet new audience were predicting
I think a lot of them are looking at it from the lens of seasoned comic readers who can't see the story past the retcons and meta. a lot of people are just enjoying the story and the teasing of what's to come

>There's that, but there's also this idea since the 'longboxes' comment that this is actively hostile to new readers (GATEKEEPING, you know?) instead of intriguing, and I'm being really delighted to see this proven wrong.
oh right, I forgot about that too

I think that goes along with the "new >>> old" mentality, old stuff is bad to appealing to long time readers is an automatic turn off or automatic gatekeeping

I am also very pleased to see that proven wrong because mining comic history for current stories can be very rewarding (and has been used to good effect in recent stuff like Grayson and whatnot)
>>
>>83327671
Same
Even if they do need 3-4 artists for it
>>
>>83327606
>that this is actively hostile to new readers

Fuck those fuckers. Half the fun of DC and Marvel is diving headfirst into the universe and reveling in all the continuity. Why people are so against the idea of continuity the in Big Two boggles me. If you don't want to deal with it, there are plenty of other venues for storytelling within the medium.

I wish the coloring was a little more consistent though
>>

>It’s clear who DC Comics is targeting. It’s not us. It’s not our audience. We at Panels will continue to try and make things clearer and tear down the gates of comics for new readers, but it’s dejecting when publishers make clear that they aren’t interested in this. That their comics aren’t for us.

Seems to me like they were targeting "anybody who'll buy the fucking book" which turns out, was quite a lot of people

a LOT of these "not for new readers" hand-wringers come off like they formed their opinions on Rebirth the second the first teaser went up and since it came out they're still picking at it to justify their thoughts. like the CA roundtable

>Andrew: Saying that New 52 Wally is just a version, and in fact a product of this miserable broken universe, and having two white men tearfully embrace over the truth that the “real” and white Wally West is still out there, that sends a message that ain’t hope, no sir. We’re being told very clearly and plainly that the priority here isn’t growth or change, it’s pandering to the childhoods of middle-aged men.

I mean nevermind the fact that people who grew up with Wally as the Flash aren't middle aged right now and that plenty of women and minorities love Wally and now you have a Wally that everybody liked and a chocolate Wally who will now have the opportunity to be liked and accepted as a character because he's not a poorly written roadblock to a different character anymore

>Is ANYONE in the roundtable actually non-white?

>Why is half of this review just talking about how its apparently racist to reintroduce a fan-favorite character? Honestly. It stupid that they explain it away as some kind of long lost family thing, but past that why can heroes co-exist?

>This is funny, becasue reading Comic Alliance the last few years feels like Dr. Manhatten also retconned your website years ago to make it a dark, cynical place.

>I totally don't agree with Wally (the white) coming back as something racist. As a person of color I grew up with Wally being the main Flash. The new Wally was marginalizing the old Wally, not the other way around. You don't show a character's whole life and then say, 'ignore that,' he's no longer a white adult married with kids, he's a young, black high school student who so far will not be as interesting as the previous version.' That's what I thought I was being told and I don't like it. I can't believe one of you said that you'd be happy if Wally sacrificed himself, for what? This ain't Crisis.

See, that old excuse of "it's hard to get into because of continuity" is bullshit. Especially now with the popularity of heavily serialized TV shows, of course people can easily follow this stuff. The lack of new readers is almost certainly due to lack of time, lack of interest, and the still persistent social stigma attached to comics.

>they hated most of it

also bitching about Wally/Linda and other romances that have been missing bc they're straight relationships.

I think there's an argument that by completely throwing away the old continuity, DC was hurting their ability to eventually stop being super grimdark at a later date since most of the non-grimdark stuff was no longer available to draw on.

But five years later I don't think that holds water any more. And it doesn't defend the books being published at the time either - on either side of Flashpoint.

Maybe

>Longtime Iron Man fans' first instinct may be to assume this is Rhodey's niece, Lila, who readers met in 2014's "Iron Patriot" series. After all, Lila is young, extremely intelligent, and has a history of working with Stark-based armor, having helped her uncle modify his own armor while Stark himself offered to help her hone her abilities.

>However, this character is referred to as Riri by her dorm mates, not Lila. Of course, this could be a false identity, a nickname or even a continuity error or change. After all, the list of people not only smart enough to work on Stark-tech powered armor, much less have the access to the components necessary to fabricate on of their own, is a short one -- particularly if you narrow your list to teenage females.

“When I announced that Kevin Smith had agreed to come on board it was immediately decided that the best way to debut Kevin Smith’s GREEN ARROW was to relaunch the book. As I write this, Kevin is wrapping up the shooting of his latest film, Dogma. He’s already mapped out what he wants to do with his first story arc (which is, as I write this, planned to be a Prestige Format miniseries), and it will be under way by the time you read this.

“But, schedules being what they are, the relaunch cannot happen on the heels of this series.”

The prestige format idea (perhaps recalling The Longbow Hunters) would later be abandoned, and those deadlines seemingly kept slipping. By the following year, the book was still nowhere to be seen, leaving Green Arrow fans pondering the fate of their favourite archer. Chuck Dixon was one of those fans, telling Fanzing (Fanzing #20, September 1999):

“The delay is all I know about. I’ve honestly never read a Kevin Smith comic. I was waiting to read Green Arrow. I saw Clerks.”

Smith, who now had several comics works under his belt including Chasing Dogma (Oni Press, 1998-1999) and the aforementioned Daredevil run, continued to be asked about its status. Always ahead of the curb when it came to using his online fan-base to whip up enthusiasm for his projects (at the time, the movie Dogma), Smith spoke with fans via a CNN online chat about the future of the book in November 1999. Asked by a fan “will we see the comic published in 2000?”, Smith replied:

“I’m going to start writing “Green Arrow” very, very soon. I’m sure that DC will hold off on soliciting it until they have a good eight or nine issues in hand. Apparently, I have this reputation for lateness…”

That first issue would eventually arrive in February 2001.

I don't get this. I mean, I understand the intent, but it feels very disconnected from the rest of the issue.

>A message buried deep in the Bush thread asked me to comment on Dan Didio's various assertions about "Young Justice" in a Heroes Con interview quoted on Newsarama. First he complained about the quality of the book's sales, stating that a book which features such iconic characters should have far higher numbers. And second he asserted that "Slobo" ruined the character of Lobo.

>The aspect that Dan perpetually leaves out of his two-part evisceration of "Young Justice" is that YJ was specifically designed to appeal to a younger readership. That was the mandate from editorial. That's what I was asked to write. YJ was intended to skew young--in its stories, in its subject matter, in its readership--with the notion that it would draw in younger readers who would eventually "graduate" to the older-skewing titles. I was told at the outset that DC neither expected nor needed the book to sell huge numbers; it was aiming at the long-term goal of bringing in new, younger readers. So his complaining about the quality of the sales is irrelevant...not to mention that YJ outsold "Impulse" and "Superboy," both of which were also cancelled, and even he admits the book was turning a profit. So pointing to these iconic characters--characters so "iconic" that DC did away with them--and complaining that sales didn't reflect their presence is really beside the point.

>Why people are so against the idea of continuity the in Big Two boggles me.

Honestly, if anything, the fact that the Big Two are these massive story juggernauts of nearly a century of stories intertwining and building on each other SHOULD BE THE APPEAL. It'sin many ways the most truly unique thing they really have.
>>
>>83331017
Okay, I figured it might come up later.
>>
>>83331041
>As for Slobo, I wanted to introduce a Wolverine-esque character to stir things up. Since the book featured junior versions of Superman, Batman, and the Flash, a junior version of Lobo seemed perfectly appropriate. A character who was, in his execution and handling, far more serious than Dan remotely gives him credit for (because, y'know, having Slobo go slowly blind was such a knee-slapper of a storyline). And, frankly, I think that a company that raped and murdered Sue Dibny, murdered Blue Beetle, tortured and crippled Batgirl, and had both Superman and Wonder Woman at various times cold-bloodedly murder opponents, doesn't get to say that *I* ruined one of their characters.

A reminder that the opening issue of Giffen's Lobo: Unbound was going to be Slobo dead and roasting on a spit, but someone warned PAD in advance so he gave him a more dignified end as a statue.

I pity people who got suckered into Ultimate as the anti-continuity universe they promoted it as when they started it. "Hey, new reader, how about getting in on the ground floor of a NEW Marvel universe without having to know all those lame old stories? Heck you know it's better because we called it 'Ultimate'!"
>>
>>83331047
Exactly. Yet so many so called fans, "journalists" and even writers abhor the idea of continuity. Well, nobody's stopping you from going indie. Oh but there's no money in that, unless you can sell the rights to your comic to a studio.
>>
>>83330961
They were already speed force aged babies and I think that didn't work for DC. Pretty much downplayed their existence in the Rebirth one-shot despite all the Linda stuff. I think there was just the one cameo of Irey in the Flash Rebirth recap panel.

> Again, not to harp on it, but in Young Justice - I'm sorry, but when you introduce a character called "Slobo"…[audience laughs] No - honestly - Lobo is a character that's dark, dangerous, edgy, and over the top. That's why Lobo is funny, not because he's a joke. When you make a Slobo character, it's not a good character. It's ruining something stronger. It ruined Lobo, in my opinion. It's selling a character down the river for a laugh, and I never want to do that. I never want to sacrifice a single character for a single laugh. At the end of the day, you do more damage than good. You may get one funny laugh, but you hurt the character in the long run, and that's not the right thing to do.
Anyway, Didio would proceed to ruin Lobo for real with the New 52.

>it comes across as being burned so much by DC they don't trust them at all

I still feel like this is a reasonable position to take.
You should probably trust DC as much as you believe you can fly.
They've promised a lighter tone before. So's Marvel. Be guarded against their lies.

I already knew the "lighter tone" thing wasn't going to apply to the books I actually wanted it to apply to. You can't fool me DC!
>>
>>83331706
Skepticism is healthy but that's not why people really read a review for a specific comic so to me it's odd to do it here rather than in a separate column. I don't think buy-in on whatever future changes is necessary to enjoy the issue.
>>
>>83332079

I really don't think DC needed to change all that much. They've been releasing solid work that's getting heavily ignored because of pointless bad blood.
>>
>>83329340
>Wasn't Batgirl pretty much the only book that wasn't grim and/or dark immediately pre-FP?

Red Robin was mostly Hacking the Hack, using Hacks and wasn't that bad.
Flash wasn't super dark, but was Barry.
I think Teen Titans may have been on an upswing again back towards passable?

I know feelings towards Chain Lightning are mixed, and kinda clinch on acceptance of Cobalt Blue (a Silver Age villain introduced 20 years late to be truly accepted), but I really loved a lot of the Future Flashes they came up with for it.

Changed up colour schemes and design elements, but most of them still felt like some kind of Flash.

The problems were, just as with pre-Flashpoint, more to do with shitty writing in the core line than anything inherently wrong with the universe. Just like with any era, it's best to ignore the shit and read what you think is good, even if it means pet characters be damned.

It wasn't as doable in the past as it is now. We take for granted how available a lot of these pretty obscure ass stories are, but in the days before internet, you had what was in the shop, the library and what you could get off subscriptions.

I've read dozens upon dozens of comics on /co/, because of the existence of torrents and storytime. I don't think I'd be as invested in a lot of comics as I am if it wasn't for those two factors.

Well, Colorists in the eighties could get pretty goofy about consistent skintones, and not a lot of artists weren't any good at drawing non-white characters.
I could absolutely seeing someone who didn't read an issue where she made mention of it mistaking her for a brunette white girl.
