Depends on which Karkat you're talking about. The actual pre-retcon Karkat or that other weenie Karkat. The guy has a lot of setups that work depending on the circumstances of the character. He has good chemistry with a large number of characters and there's a lot of characters who could offer him a good, stable relationship to deal with his issues without butchering his character with magical meta powers.

The whole thing is stupid, but it most likely applies to Karkat as, whilst they did have chemistry and clearly cared for each other, they were terrible for each other with the personal issues they each had lead to them both having impaired judgement on the journey.

In all honesty though, we didn't see any of the struggles they must have had over the 3 year journey, especially Terezi. So the whole scene doesn't hold much weight or deal with any of the actual problems the two had with each other, instead electing to just avoid them and never bring them up. Get used to that.
