Why is everyone in this thread so infatuated with Mary? She is literally a hollow shell of a character like almost all the other people in this story. I actually ended up reading DoA within the first week of it being posted. I've been really enjoying reading other people hating on this comic since I felt alone in thinking it to be idiotic and vapid.

Therefore, I'm going to take the time and do some analyses of these characters as part of David Willis’s psyche, as a gift to all of you for your wonderful edits and intelligent commentary.

I'm just going to use the ones on the cast page for now:

Starting from the top:
Joyce. Ah, yes, Joyce. I have a lot of similarities to Joyce, pre-ruining. Joyce represents his sheltered upbringing and how he finally began to see that there is a lot more to the world than he originally thought there was. His constant references to Joyce being his self-insert come off as condescending because of all the terrible things that have happened to her. Did he almost get raped at his first college party? Probably not. And there is this other aspect that gets commented on but overlooked in the sense of being part of his self-insert: Joyce’s physical interest in other girls. Joyce is in love with how cool Sal is and loves her hair, and she can’t stop looking at Billie’s boobs. So is this Willis admitting he’s had gay desires? Possibly! After all, she’s the self-insert.

Walky: the original self-insert. I have no idea how he got the nickname in the first place, because I can’t make “Walky” out of “David Willis” for the life of me. In any case, Walky (full name David Walkerton in the comics) is a snot-nosed brat who can do whatever he wants and has spent most of his life succeeding without trying and without noticing the effort other people have to put forth. This comes off to me as him being smug about his supposed intelligence and how he doesn’t have to try for people to like him and his work. Remember that line about how DoA is a comic he can do without any effort?

Part 2:

Dorothy is the lovable atheist and unlikely best friend of Joyce. I think her personality early on is to show Joyce that you don’t have to be a Christian to be a nice person. However, as time has gone on, she has become less pleasant, for some unknown reason. She’s intelligent and ambitious, which I bet is how Willis sees himself. But she has a darker side: she doesn’t really seem to mind using people. It’s not a major trait right now, but she’s gotten somewhat manipulative. And she is *always* right. Hmmm, who does that sound like?
Billie is a bit more difficult to place. She has been an alcoholic since before the comic began, and from what it sounds like, she is heavily bisexual. But it seems to me like her sexuality conforms to whatever storyline he wants to do. This isn’t to say that she isn’t bi—it’s just that every mention of her sexual orientation has implied something different. A holdover from some of the other timelines is a car accident she had because of drunk driving. You can see a lot of hedonism in Billie—she is able to do pretty much whatever she wants and no one will have a problem with it. I think this is wish fulfillment on the part of Willis. Billie can kiss whoever she wants to and can drink however much she wants to, and the consequences in-comic have been pretty minimal, suicide pact aside.

Amber is another character who’s pretty nebulous. As it’s been said on here, her psychological state is dependent upon what the storyline calls for. It’s more like there are 3 or 4 Ambers, not 2. Amazi-Girl is ridiculous and can do nigh-superhuman feats in a world where superpowers (according to Word of God) do not exist. This is a bit of a Christopher Nolan thing, to me at least. In Nolan’s Batman films, Batman (one of Willis’s other favorite things, after Transformers) has it all and lives in a world without superpowers, yet he can miraculously survive horrific injuries and has basically infinite money. Willis uses Amazi-Girl to let out the side of him that wants to be brave. Amber is a girl who sits in her dorm room and plays video games, yet she still has a supernatural capability for surviving injuries that should have killed her. She is heavyset and is a general geek, but she is also Batman. So, here’s some more wish fulfillment.

Poor Danny. He’s basically a weak little puppy that everyone feels compelled to kick all the time. He’s a bit pathetic and generally pretty clueless. But that is in part due to nobody actually *telling* him anything. Everyone but Joe speaks to him in vagaries and expects him to know what’s going on. Danny is discovering his bisexuality, and it is just another mystery in life for him, because nothing else makes sense anyway. He’s a less assertive Joyce, honestly. Joyce is generally confident and happy but gets blind-sided by stuff she’s never even heard of. Danny is miserable AND gets blind-sided. He’s the one-note character that gets verbally abused like Jerry in “Parks and Recreation.” They even say that someone is “Danning” something up—so his name is literally used as a verb for ruining their chances.

All right, Becky. Here, we have a character who's technically been with us since day one. She leaves Joyce behind to go to a more Christian college, where she decides to have lesbian pre-marital hanky-panky with her roomie. And that was the beginning of The Lesbo Train.

Becky gets kicked out and seeks shelter at Joyce's secular college. She loves Joyce so much that she has twisted their friendship into an assumption that Joyce loves her the same way (generally referred to as “projecting”). She kisses Joyce and is somehow surprised about getting rejected. Like a petulant teenager, she decides to yell about her lesbianism and get a haircut that grants her magic anime powers.

This is the strawman that Willis so loudly fights against. His strawman characters from all of his comics are essentially this character, but they’re usually overweight and unattractive in some way—because your appearance dictates who you are as a person, right? Willis’s strawmen are characterized by a few important features: they’re unable to listen to reason, they have loud and outlandish opinions/attitudes, and they have only these two character traits.

If Becky loves Joyce so much, why does she go out of her way to make her uncomfortable? It’s one thing to help someone push their boundaries, but Becky is not being helpful. Becky is loud, always right, and pretty much defines herself by her lesbianism.

Willis spends an excessive amount of time railing against strawmen, but look at the description of strawmen that I just gave. Hmmm... We’ve seen time and time again that he is unable to listen to reason and just covers his ears/eyes any time he hears/sees something he doesn’t like.

Part 2:

To Willis, Becky can do no wrong, correct? Everything she does makes her a beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves a good life.

This is his ideal. He wants to continue being one of the strawmen he so vocally loathes, but as Sarah and Joyce said in an arc: “Exactly what you said, but not sarcastic.” He has the same features as Becky and his strawmen, who are lazy representations of fringe groups. There are loud lesbians who declare that they are lesbians in every sentence—the one I know personally is pretty annoying about it. There are lots of delightful lesbians that I know, and they would HATE his representation of Becky. Becky is off-putting and acts like she was designed by someone who wants to make lesbians look bad.

Becky is his ultimate form of wish fulfillment. They have the same personalities in many ways, especially in terms of inflexibility. Willis wants to be able to go around and say his opinions without ever being criticized for them. He wants to be loud and to express himself. This is more or less the Willis that we see getting angry every time someone doesn’t like one of his comics. His bad guys are bad guys, and his good guys are good guys—there’s rarely wiggle room there. He wants us to see Becky as one of the good guys but is so eager to let her live and be happy that he doesn’t realize that she is genuinely no better than the strawmen he spent so much of Shortpacked! ragging on. Becky’s loud, aggressive personality is the strong-willed person Willis sees himself as. And he deserves his happy ending—he says so when he bends everything around Becky to prevent her father from completing his kidnapping of her. Willis’s choices are ALWAYS right. Mary is the antithesis of Becky. They define themselves by one trait (Christianity & lesbianism, respectively) and make sure that everyone around them knows it. But one is bad (ooh, evil Christians), and one is good (yay for lesbians!). Any time Mary does something that we sympathize with (like studying), she is immediately shown to be horrible somehow. Any time Becky does something unpleasant, Willis bends over backwards to explain why she is right and everyone else is a homophobe if they don’t like her.

He has spent so long categorizing Christianity as evil that he doesn’t even realize that he’s turned his Christian characters into mustache-twirlers. And all of his girls who like girls are in the right. For example, Ruth, despite being a tyrant, continues to keep her job. The consequences for any of these characters are negligible. Yeah, Ruth and Billie have their suicide pact thing, but by virtue of Word of God, none of the main characters will die. So it means nothing. Ruth loses her job? Both of them will still be in school. Becky gets kidnapped? Doesn’t matter. She’s perfect and gets her happy ending. His characters have so much plot armor because of this, and it seems to center around girls who are in relationships with other girls.

Therefore, Word of God dictates Becky’s happy ending, and that’s all that Willis wants for himself. He wants the universe to bend over backwards and give him the happy life he deserves because he was soooooo oppressed growing up. By shouting against the universe, he is essentially pleading God to do what he’s done for Becky. Now, *that’s* ironic.

Mary isn't an antagonizing, aggressive, holier-than-thou bitch, she's a petty, judgmental, and most importantly, reactive bitch. He's also blind to the fact that he created a terrifying portrait of a predatory, violent, domestic abuser with classic borderline personality disorder in Ruth but I think that's just more about him idealizing emotionally wounded people.

Like, Mary has shown one moment of anger towards Carla based on her being trans. Every other thing that she's ever done since has been trying to manipulate Ruth based on her dating Billie and to try and do things more her way. Which, sure, let's say that's bad even though the RA dating a student is pretty bad. Still not towards Carla.
Then when it's known Carla's up to something, Mary calls her a misplaced freak in an angry conversation with Ruth, something I'm pretty sure Willis added because he realized he hasn't actually given Mary too much of a BAD reason to hate Carla. The animosity has to be mainly because Carla is an affront to things that she believes, not that Carla has been a huge ass to her with no repercussions.

This is the problem with the way he does storylines. This thread has been hanging around since January (on like a daily update schedule) and yet there hasn't been enough development to this besides Mary being "I'm the petty, religious stereotype who has to be outright angry at other viewpoints loudly because Jesus rocks my socks" and Carla being "I'm quirky and like to annoy this person but she said something personal so now I will make her life miserable".

It's why people create subtext here and vehemently support Mary. Not because Mary is such a GREAT CHARACTER, but because of some misguided hope that there's SOMETHING ELSE, and that this retarded story doesn't have a retarded ending.

The thing that angers Mary more than anything else in the world is that she can't study because an annoying idiot keeps causing a ruckus and trying to escalate a conflict with her and that the worst RA in the word refuses to do anything about it.

All right, so we have Sarah (the black chick), who is Joyce’s roommate. She’s jaded—she had a terrible roommate and lost her friends because they were judgmental know-it-alls. Like a guardian angel, she has watched over Joyce in hopes that she can help her, even though she doesn’t want to admit it. She was worried that Joyce would be broken, and now that it’s happened, she doesn’t even know what to say.

Sarah, despite how she acts, is a rather lonely character. Her needs were a priority, but her “friends” didn’t see it the same way. She stood up for what she wanted and needed, and all she got in return was a new roommate that she couldn’t stand (at first).

This character archetype is one that you can see when someone starts at a new school. If you’re going to a new school, you are often alone, and the people that used to like you have, for some reason, decided that they no longer like you. Despite Willis’s headstrong confidence, there is still a part of him that remembers what isolation was like. Maybe it was when he entered middle school, maybe it was high school, and maybe it was college. It doesn’t matter which one it is. Sarah is both wise and raw. She is essentially starting over, but with the benefit of what she’s learned, like when you die in a video game and have to go back to a save point. Willis uses Sarah to explore that isolation and awkwardness. Sarah is fairly terrible at interacting with other people, and I think Willis is afraid of being that way still.

Sarah is a loner, but mostly by choice; while she has some social dysfunctions her asocial behavior comes mostly from a cynical standoffishness that is intentionally cultivated. While she does have a tendency to be a jerk, it's countered by both protectiveness and mentoring to Joyce. Ultimately, Sarah is the kind of disaffected cool guy Willis wishes he could have been.

Dina is a bit more direct. She's Willis' issues, sheltered, ignorant of the world, socially stunted, and obsessive, given a single specific cause that explains and absolves them.

Dina is an interesting one since she’s not “officially diagnosed” with anything but seems to have some sort of social disorder. This is another representation of Willis feeling awkward around other people. And dare I say it, but it has a lot to do with his Transformers obsession.

Think about Dina’s single-mindedness in her love of dinosaurs. She hardly knows how to talk about other things with her peers. This is much the same as his love of Transformers. It largely consumes his online personality and seeped into Shortpacked! on multiple occasions. If you know as much about Transformers as he does, I’m sure he would have plenty to say. But there’s still that scared, isolated child. He doesn’t feel like he can be open with people about other things because Transformers has engulfed who he is as a person. Dina is an outlet for the same intense love, but she is a million times cuter.
