When something's used for a quick gag, you're usually just meant to assume it's a one-time joke and doesn't really apply to anything else in the show beyond that one joke.

If the thing the gag's about shows up again or has a whole episode dedicated to it, you can usually assume it's about as canon as something on The Simpsons can ever be.
