Even the final movie was really blatant about it
Predators were obviously a stand in for American blacks
>roughly 10% of the population
>thought to be violent and dangerous
>often turn to crime because they "expected to" (e.g. Nick)
>become truly violent because the ruling class give them drugs
The Nighthowlers were drugs. They even made a direct reference to Breaking Bad.

That blacks are violent and dangerous? Yeah, like there's not a stereotype about crossing the street.

Or is it predators? Wasn't there an entire scene where Nick is angry at Judy for just that reason?

Remember that this is a story. It's not real. Statistics mean nothing. If it exists in the story, it's performing a purpose.

Sequel, with comics or short OVA's to keep us occupied in between.

Whilst the cop angle is pretty convenient for a TV series, it's inevitably going to come with a hideous drop in quality, plus writer struggles. I'm all for quality over quantity for this.

>Will this be the next "Zootopia"?
No.

As >>83252448 points out, there's something which made Zootopia stand out. I'd say it was the... realness, of how they approached the idea. Rather than just have a movie about a talking fox working with a talking rabbit, they took the time to think about what it means to be a rabbit talking with a fox, and built a setting around that... and then, they put a good movie (independent of that) in as well.

This? It looks like your standard anthropomorphic cartoon. Sure, it will sell well, and people will probably think of it as "the second Zootopia" because the characters are all different sizes. But it doesn't look to be doing anything strange or different with the concept beyond what the Muppets were doing back in the 80s.

Still, it looks better than Secret Life of Pets.

>the predators are a stand-in for american blacks

Except the current problem with blacks in america isn't because of their race, but their culture. The hoodlum, gang-oriented culture of African Americans is turning them to drugs, violence, and a disdain for honest work and an education. Black kids berate and antagonize other black kids in city schools if they see them trying to actually study, and make fun of them for acting "too white."

Blacks who grow up in white neighborhoods and traditional american white culture do fine. Blacks who grow up in black slums are violent leeches of society. This is why despite only being 18% of the population, African Americans commit over half the murders in the country.

>they are just like that because they are poor

Actually in sheer numbers there are more whites in poverty than blacks, and on average Latino families are *poorer* than blacks. It's their culture, not their race or economic standing.

The predators have fully integrated in Zootopian society. The Blacks in America have culturally segregated themselves from the rest.

He went to the movie with a friend's family, and the black grandfather had basically the same as Nick's backstory with his childhood in Detroit. (More getting your ass beat than just a muzzle put on, but still the same thing.)

Also, he makes up stories set in Zootopia to tell his little cousin. Little cousin made a bet that the guy would get a response from the screenwriters, and he took his cousin up on the bet. Hence, he sent the letter off.
>>
Just watched the movie so I missed out on all the discussion.

Why are there only mammals in the movie?
>>
>>83256877
Easier to explore the themes of the movie when there are only mammals. Throw in other species and it becomes more complicated.
>>
>>83256877

Simplicity. The creators initially planned to include reptiles, avians and primates in Zootopia, but found out it was creating too much confusion for their test audiences, and muddling the message of the movie in general. Eventually, they decided to limit the population to mammals only, and later excluded primates as well for other reasons (test audiences kept presuming primate characters were markedly more intelligent than everyone else).
>>
>>83253134
Actually they reworked the plot a bit because the original pitch WAS too similar to Zootopia.

Proto-zootopia is an interesting tale in and of itself. People know about it because a lot of concept art and information about it was leaked online some time back, and it seems the Blu-Ray extras will include some content about it as well.

In short, during it's 4-5 year development process, Zootopia's premise was a lot more darker than what we eventually got. In short, it was going to be more of a dystopia, where predators and prey live and work together, except predators were required by law to wear shock collars 24/7. The idea behind the collars being, if a predator ever got too irate or aggressive (or too happy, for that matter), he'd get zapped as a 'reminder' to be civil and tolerant. Nick was meant to be the main protagonist, who ran a secret underground theme park for predators. A place where predators could temporarily remove their collars and indulge in eustress-filled fun. The story was apparently going to have a Fugitive-like angle, where Nick would be framed for a murder he didn't commit, and go on the run, trying to clear his name whilst avoiding the law. Judy was to be the experienced, driven cop bent on arresting him; Initially an antagonist, who slowly turned into a protagonist as she came to know Nick better.

At any rate, the creators struggled with this premise, though they kept at it, even into the last year of production. The plot and it's implications were found to be too depressing and grim compared to Disney's usual works, so they eventually dropped it, rewrote the premise to the Zootopia we now know, and made Judy the protagonist.

Protozootopia gets a lot of discussion, because of how markedly unusual it would have been for a Disney production. Opinions vary from "It could have been a bold and striking" to "It was shit and Byron is a shit for insisting on it for this long". There are deleted scenes and storyboards out there from protozootopia, and they are chock-filled with feels. Especially the 'Taming Party'.
>>
>>83257482
Wew, so much to read about.
>>
>>83257482
Considering the current Zootopia story was made very late into production, this makes me think what would the current story be like if they spent those 4 - 5 years on this one specifically, no prototopia ever mentioned or considered.

Hard to say, but consider that the movie's main was message on prejudice, fear and discrimination. This message started out in the form of Protozootopia, and after a long struggle with the grim nature of the premise, they eventually toned it down to what we have now. They didn't really reach here without going through the original premise first. A lot of the scenes, props and scenery seen in Zootopia were are retooled versions from Protozootopia, in fact. Quick example: In the scene where Judy seeks down Nick under a bridge for her apology, there's a warehouse in the distance. That warehouse was originally 'Wilde Times', Nick's secret theme park for predators.

Sometimes it is those 'messy' films that turn out to be better in the end.

Look at Emperor's New Groove and its issues. It turned into a B-movie in the eye of the executives and did better than their "clean" A-movie the same year (Dinosaur).
>>
>>83264108
>>83264431
Conflict among the writing team usually shows that someone in there actually cares about the movie. When a movie's production goes completely smoothly, it usually only goes to show that whoever's making it only cares about selling units.
>>
>>83264431
Emperor's New Groove wasn't anything near a real success though, I wouldn't use it as an example.

But missteps are common in movies, like Little Mermaid. At one point there wasn't going to be any bubbles underwater, "Part of your world" was cut from the movie and iirc, the ending was completely different for the longest time.

The first image shows that Zootopia was, in fact, an animated film that gave a damn and putting effort into the lighting and cinematography to make it cinematic.

It was a really good movie. Considering they worked on it for years prior to its release, I am not optimistic for a sequel.

However, if anyone can do it, it'd be this team.

>10:1 is the ratio in the wild
On another note, this makes me think; 10:1 is in the wild (i.e. our world, where predators hunt prey), but in a world where predator and prey animals haven't hunted each other in thousands of years, would the population actually maintain this ratio? What would stop the predator population from increasing in size once they no longer had to compete with each other for food to survive?
>>
>>83266870
It's rather the prey population that would increase. Prey generally have much higher birth rates to make up for, you know, getting killed my predators all the time but in the Zootopia universe, where they aren't being hunted, they don't have to worry about that. So if anything, prey should outnumber predators by more than 10 to 1
>>
>>83266870
Prey themselves. With them basically not being hunted, their population would boom
There would be a billion preds but even there there's always be a trillion prey. Especially with how they aren't being hunted

I remember when these threads loved the idea of zistopia.
While I admit that it wouldn't have made for as great of a successful film and I doubt I would have been as obsessed, I don't understand the concentrated vitriol towards it. Could someone explain this to me, please?
>>
I think I found the link that makes Nick Byron's husbando/self-insert.

So the creators have tried to make it out that Nick and Judy are just friends, right? Assuming Zystopia was to happen, it makes sense: the plot is more focused on Nick, and Judy's involvement is to be a secondary antagonist for the first act. They only start to work together when Judy is faced with the realities of what the predators have to go through (The Taming Party). Judy decides to help Nick get to the bottom of the savage outbreaks and succeeds in revealing the conspiracy. With that done, Judy goes back to the ZPD and Nick opens Wild Times. They go their separate ways and follow their own road. Just like friends. It's also worth noting he lives with two other "rejects" of society of both genders - a badger who dresses extremely butch-y and is anti-establishment and a submissive fennec who is put into degrading situations for money.

In Newtopia, Nick and Judy develop a grudging respect which becomes close to a friendship before the "break up" scene. Judy pours her heart out and Nick accepts her apology. They work together, develop a relationship, and become "partners."

Byron had to watch his movie flipped. His husbando has been turned straight.
>>
>>83269641

Because it's a reflection of our lives. Even though the predators should just abandon zootopia and the prey who feared them, they stay in Zootopia and kumbaya. We look at that as bullshit but you can see it in all forms of society.

It's a good plot, not for a disney movie.

Why not? It could have perfectly been PG Blacksad. I mean, I liked it, and it felt like that was the original point, but by the end of the movie it's another thing.

My problem is how developed the world is compared to the plot. There are so many characters that were featured in the trailer that speak one or two lines in the movie, and they are all so exploitable that it just feels like they didn't have the time. This movie alone could have filled a 12 episode season and it would still feel rich.

I just wish they release comics or a tv show. That would be great.

I'm guessing that, when it would have been time to make the Kellogg's deals and write up the contracts and such, they were still in proto-Zootopia and didn't feel like making a breakfast cereal of it.

Or they just didn't want us eating marshmallow foxes and bunnies for some reason.

TV show.
Or novel, sequel, video game, musical tale, or almost anything besides a comic.

Comics are a limited medium, inferior to all others (besides maybe poetry), and are acceptable only because they are cheap to produce and are often the only way a creator can afford to continue a story. In which case, a comic is certainly better than nothing.

>A dakimakura (抱き枕) (from daki (抱き) "to embrace or cling" and makura (枕) "pillow"), is a type of large pillow from Japan. The word is often translated in English simply as "hug pillow". In Japan, dakimakura are similar to Western orthopedic body pillows, and are commonly used by Japanese youth as "security objects".

>In the West, "dakimakura" is associated with a love pillow. Love pillows are a subset of dakimakura usually portraying life-size pictures of anime characters. Some pillows may portray anime characters or pornographic film actors in suggestive poses.

Lol. My Mom said the same thing when she saw that. She loves Pixar type movies, she's an old gear-head having done a frame up restoration on a '47 International among others back in the day.

I, otoh, like trains. Re-examining some scenes.. anyone know if these letters on the container are a reference to something?

That'd actually be interesting, if you add up the animal element in it, it could actually probably work.
>>
>>83274785
Nick would be a bit of an arsehole to do that though. He and Judy (especially the latter) seem very happy together
>>
>>83274921
It's not that cut and dry. If Judy was really that upset with him fufilling his life's goal, she's more the asshole than he
>>
>>83274936
Eh, I can that, but I would've thought that Nick was happier now being with Judy. Maybe it could go ahead and put a strain on their relationship
>>
>>83274953
The problem with that idea and ones that similarly are meant to put stress on the relationship is that it never really leads to anything interesting, since we practically know how it's going to end: Jude and Nick together. Even if they went in the opposite directions, leaving them separate at the end, I'm not to sure that would be a good idea either. There needs to be somethings that drastically change so he nature of the relationship by them end, something perferably non romantic, since i think that would be too easy

Well, maybe it would be best to have them go through something very tough together and come out of it much closer to each other. I'm not a writer, so I don't really know how I'd go about doing this, but it sounds decent to me.

Probably the best way you'd end something like this that presents both a conflict in motivations and a seemingly-predictable ending (Nick choosing Judy; spending the money on something plot-relevant to her instead) is a middle-ground conclusion depending on how the story unfolds.

Maybe something bad happens to the funds part-way though and Nick's pals in their spare time to save it at the end, or maybe Nick decides to turn said shit-shack into a specific different function related to what happened in the movie, or (if Disney's daring enough) Nick or Judy goes MIA from the final conflict and is presumed KIA, but is actually ok and comes back with Wilde Times restored. I dunno, something along those lines.

>Chinese rip version
Can anyone point me to the best version? I got a bluray rip but the audio was bad - I don't really know audio but part of the audio was really quiet, so that background music and voices in the distance were really quiet and everything else was normal volume. "Try Everything" was even more shit than usual because it was just Shakira's voice and the beat without any real backing.

Can anyone point me to a good version that isn't 46gb? Is there one that has deleted scenes too?
>>
>>83275275
There's an 8gb rip in the usual places.
>>
>>83275275
There's a 5gb one with decent quality but I think the 46gb is the only one with the scenes.
Maybe you could still find the scenes and bonuses floating around online since Disney cucked most of it from youtube.

>>83275275

I have mixed opinions on the soundtrack. On the one hand, it does sound cool. I love the jumbo pop hustle, Hopps goes after the Weasel, and particularly the music where they run into the Natural History Museum - brief but very weighty.

On the other hand, there's no theme (Try Everything doesn't really count because it's never woven into the movie). But then, films don't really have themes these days. Soundtrack music at the moment tends to play more of a back-seat role than it used to in the glory days of John Williams etc. That said, given that trend Zootopia does have a quirky and interesting enough score (the special feature on the score, Scoretopia, also highlights how innovative a lot of the percussion was, which is cool)

I think the bit that bothered me most was the music in Judy's academy montage - frankly, it's shit. When it should be all uplifting and exciting and "YEAH!", it's just kind of a mishmash of generic Inception / Nolan's Batman / Hans Zimmer light.

I do like it overall, though. When I started working in London I used to listen to try everything as I arrived at the main train station Waterloo and that was pretty neat, sent me off to work with a smile.

I went to Nanjing last year. Read Empire Of The Sun while working in Shanghai.
