Updated my comic today! What do you guys think?
>>
>>83246852
Just make nudes of her already if your gonna dedicate a whole page of her wearing little clothing, and being super acrobatic and sweaty.
>>
>>83246852
Woah that's good
>>
>>83246961
>little clothing
>acrobatic, sweaty

did you know women sometimes exist as human beings and don't do things so that you can jerk off to them?
>>
>>83246762
I've had an idea kicking around since 2009 that's kind of a parody of RPGs, but now I'm afraid I will be accused of ripping off Undertale.
>>
>>83248222
If it's good, the controversy will only serve to attract more readers.
>>
>>83246852
Her outfit seems a bit weird for gymnastics. Shouldn't she be wearing a leotard?
With the way the lines vanish into the shading in the full-body shot, I thought she was wearing a miniskirt until the third time I read through it.
>>
>>83248995
shouldn't she be wearing a spandex bikini?
>>
>>83248995
>>83249267
It's only afternoon practice so I opted for gym uniform in school colors, with the leotard being reserved for actual competition.
>>
Let's call this a hypothetical question that's totally not based in reality.

Say I have a comic I've been doing for years. It's almost entirely a personal exercise in writing and art, but I still enjoy making it for the sake of developing the characters and story. The early art is horrible, and there's no proper "beginning," or even introductions for most characters.

Say that, at one point, I get wise and trim the fat of boring, uninteresting, or just bad character elements, and stories begins to form as I focus on the core personality traits and lives of the characters rather than "lol random" nonsense. My art finally begins feeling competent. I even start thinking my writing has developed into something that isn't completely awful. I get to a point where I actually want to share it.

Here's the question: How should I go about sharing it? Do I tell people to begin from the "start," and just say "look, the early stuff isn't all that good. Just please stick with it, I think it improves a lot as times goes on." Or do I start people off where I feel the comic finally picks up and becomes readable and actually visually pleasant? Even if it means some early characterization or development in the less-than-good old stuff is left out as a result?
>>
>>83249980
Almost every webcomic out there started out with worse art than they have now. I've found that people tend to stick with it.
>>
>>83249980
>Or do I start people off where I feel the comic finally picks up and becomes readable and actually visually pleasant? Even if it means some early characterization or development in the less-than-good old stuff is left out as a result?
I think that you should at least accommodate newer readers who don't want to slog through all of the old stuff, by having characters explain things that happened in the early days when it's referenced, rather than expecting the reader to already know.
You can have the early strips in a separate archive so that people who want to read them can do so.
>>
>>83249980
How many pages do you have, dude? My webcomic is kinda the same way, it starts slow and it sucks to introduce people saying "it gets better", BUT, in my case the first pages aren't that bad, me and the writer still think they are ok, and there are only a few of them before the story picks up anyway.
If the first pages of your webcomic are as bad as you make them sound, maybe you should just redo them from the start.
>>
>>83250028
Very true. Suppose I'm just worried about first impressions.

>>83250184
I tend to try and make sure motivations are clear. Or at least as much as I can with snappy dialogue, as I try to avoid walls of text.

However, I have been thinking of making "chapters" that focus on particularly important moments in characters' early development. Could always do that and have some kind of "New Reader" section with links to each chapter.

Would rather not separate the early stuff from the new stuff entirely. While I'm growing attached to writing its stories, the comic's primary purpose is and always will be about its development; I'd hate to push the old stuff aside as though I don't want to remember where I used to be in comparison to where I am now.

>>83250405
Uh, I have about 440 strips, give or take a dozen based on ones that even I don't want to look at anymore (And weren't important to anything). Like I said, been doing it for years. Though, I have been considering going back and doing a visual update of the old stuff without color. With all the settings already figured out, it'd be pretty easy to update them, though it'd probably take a while on its own since it'd be so many old strips to update.
>>
>>83250642
>440
i don't believe it. are you counting sloppy stick figure doodles?
>>
>>83250809
Nope. The accurate number is actually 439. Would actually be more if I didn't hit a bad episode of depression in late 2014 that lasted to mid 2015; the preferred schedule is at least 4 strips a month, though it used to be twice weekly before college and more detailed character designs/backgrounds happened.

Been doing it since 2010. Actually earlier than that, but that's as far back as I felt comfortable uploading to my site. And yeah, I pay for a site no one looks at (I put it all elsewhere online too, of course).
>>
>>83250642
wtf, have you been publishing them? Maybe you could throw away stuff that is irrelevant to the plot, and don't flesh out characters. The best I can suggest is a reboot of your comics, but then again, I don't know how bad your comics are... I particularly can't stand going through a gigantic archive of bad strips to get to the good stuff, but I know there are people here who don't care, maybe the majority of the public won't mind as well
>>
>>83250940
>it's already online
whyd idn't you say so my amigo, post liink
>>
>>83251027
Nah, I'm definitely with you there. I can handle a couple issues of sub-par art if the writing is good, but two hundred+ pages before I can get to something that looks interesting and I'm probably gonna nope out.

Pathetic as it may be to say, I'm not sure I'm comfortable sharing it here just yet. I think, over the weekend, I'll work on gathering the various stories into their own respective chapters so that it's easier to navigate through everything, both old and new. I also need to clean up and reorganize a few things so information is clearer and less hack-ish. Some details need to be clarified and whatnot.

Thank y'all for the information. Hopefully I'll post here around Monday. For better or worse, I have to shove my work into the open at some point.

First draft! Full of Grammar mistakes and misspelling.

>The eternal lotus. A dangerous bandits of plant people that thrives on stealing treasures from kings and monsters.
>I can’t believe I meeting one of them. A dumb idiot that selling me something that doesn’t exist.

"The Eternal Lotus*. A dangerous group of bandits, plant people who thrive on treasures stolen from kings and monsters."
"I can't believe I'm meeting one of them. And I can't believe she's this stupid, trying to sell me something that doesn't even exist."

*I'm assuming "eternal lotus" is a proper noun.

sixth panel "I mean I" one "I" is different from the other... one is capitalized and the other isn't. It's common to have upper case "I"s in comics, but here they are too inconsistent. It's specially weird when you have an "I" be capitalized after the end of a sentence, like "If he makes you" on the fifth panel, but then the text on the fourth panel starts with a lower case "I".

I think it's a STANDARD to expect webcomics to start off kinda "ehh... it's okay" before it actually gets good. Most webcomics have their latest update in the front page, so at least people new to your work will know that it gets better latter on; which also gives you a bigger incentive to do your best since each page is intended to peak some viewer interest at first sight. Obviously there'll be "duller" dialogue pages here and there, but you do with what you can.

>>83246852
the scene where she'll meets up with her mom in costume and ask to be her sidekick should be fun

>>83253200
Those are some very nice backgrounds you make. I have a bit of an issue with the values as, even if it's different foliage, more saturates elements will "jump" to the foreground while the less saturates will recede back; but overall it's still a great looking page, keep it up.

Also started doing Character Design for Chapter 7 & 8; there's actually a LOT of characters to design for these two chapter who recur throughout the series. I liked how they came out; I was hesitating whether to have the fox knight walk on his feet like Nick does in Zootopia or to have him stand like when you command a dog to "walk", but thought the latter looked cooler.

I think I also finally managed to get chainmail to look good, found a really clever way to draw them quickly from an illuminated manuscript kinda like what CGGuy showed me

Digitigrade tends to look better for manimals, especially lithe ones like foxes. Good choice.

>from an illuminated manuscript kinda like what CGGuy showed me
Man where do you think I stole it from in the first place? Looks good.

There's a few things that I'm curious about, though;

Why are there no shield bosses on any of the shields? To the best of my knowledge, round shields that weren't center-gripped were more of a classical (Greek Hoplon) or mid-renaissance (Scottish Targe and the Italian Rotella) idea, which seems at odds with the general feeling of dark-age-knights that these guys are giving me. Obviously you're not constrained to history (and you did have Richard comment that he wasn't used to a center-grip shield back when he got his), but why not give them all kite shields?

Those spurs look a little advanced compared to everything else. I don't believe the star shaped thingies on the point ("rowels") were a thing until the late 13th century at the earliest.

What's with the square on the front of the fox guy's chest? I've seen them on a lot of modern illustrations, but I don't recall ever seeing them on period art or archaeological finds.

I'm a little sad nobody's wearing surcoats, but I guess that's not the fashion back in wherever these guys are from.

I honestly thought you planned chapter 1 out thoroughly, as it reads and flows really well. Looking forward to chapter 2.
btw. You're probably already aware of it, as your panel boarders in the late chapter 1 and your gag strips are cleaner, but just in case I'd like to mention that as pleasant as your art is to look at - it gets confusing sometimes if you use a mid tone value grey background with unclear panel boarders. I'd say you don't need to outline them, but change the BG to either black or white and cut 'em sharp.

I don't see the story as set in stone and neither do I try to fit in every character or story idea. It is more like a tree that branches out. As I set rules for the world or bring in a new element, the tree changes and I have to consider a lot, as it's all coherently connected.
In short: The more refined the story gets, the larger it gets (content wise). And even if I don't show the content directly, I at least have to take it into consideration when writing, to properly showcase the world and foreshadow upcoming themes. I want it to be worth re-reading.

>Shield comment

Well, I kinda wanted their kingdom to have a sort Mediterranean vibe (which is why they also have dark curly hair, and darker skin). The shield choice just came from some older Spanish High Middle Ages manuscript where they used a mix of mostly round and some kite shields, without bosses as far as the ones I saw were concerned. So I thought giving them mostly round shields would be an easy way to make them more "exotic-looking" and distinguish them from the more "continental-looking" Aquillians, which'll have a design more akin to the Norman knights.

Admittedly though, I just googled "Knight's spurs" or "Medieval spurs" and it hadn't really occurred to me that those would have also changed throughout history, but that can be changed in a jiffy. I don't know what the square thing is either... I also saw it in modern illustrations mainly but also in the Roda Bibble

It's pretty great how since you do a fantasy comic you can just take stuff from all over history. If I were doing your comic, what I would do is intentionally mix cultures in the clothing, weapons, equipment, etc. because you can get some really interesting mashups that way.

It should be noted that's not an original idea or anything, I'm stealing it from Harry Turtledove and how he intentionally mixed up cultural and ethnic trademarks in his Darkness series of fantasy novels, which is World War II but in a swords and sorcery fantasy world. It's very interesting, you should check it out if you're a fan of fantasy.

Obvious Möbius influence, but the lack of depth in the drawing and colors is killing it for me. Learn some hatching and line variation
>>
>>83275628
Thanks! Issue 2 deals with a lot more characterization and character development, which was the biggest complaint we received about issue 1, which we intended to be more of an action hook.

There will be some REALLY nice character interactions over the next couple of pages - I think you're gonna love it.
>>
>>83277180
>It's pretty great how since you do a fantasy comic you can just take stuff from all over history.

Of course, the reason I started doing this was because I love to draw historical armor and clothing and mythological creatures; especially those you don't see too often on film!
I think keeping the human's clothes and equipment more "down to earth" creates a nice contrast from the more fantastical elements of the comic such fairies, I think.
>>
some time ago, some anons said I shouldn't do an edgy webcomic implying that there are a lot of them. I know its my decision at the end but I still do wonder, are there really that many edgy webcomics out there and what is considered edgy anyway?
>>
>>83246852
Could use a scene setting panel, as it is, its too cropped in on average. I know that having pulling out seen to be a bit of waste, you wanted to focus on the character, however, I feel narrative could benefit from having a good look at where this character is.

Although I am guessing not having too much bg is because you are following a tight schedule.
>>
>>83278294
I think edginess done right is okay, mainly if you got something to say behind the deliberately shocking content, hot opinions or gratuitous violence. What's seen as edgy may vary from people to people though. Like, I read Preacher for the first time a few days ago with the story time on this very board, and it has many edgy moments, but its also brilliant in its own rights. I'm not sure I read any edgy webcomics to find a better example though.

Am I gonna get some flack if I pull a fearful symmetry and make the panels "reflect" each other in a chapter of my comic? It takes place in a house of mirrors that reflects one's true self.
>>
>>83246852
This is a really fucking weird page.

It doesn't flow very well, for starters. The composition almost seems to ask the reader to move in a figure-eight across the page. One of the bars in the first panel almost looks like it's supposed to be a margin, the motions don't gel together, the entire bottom row is centered on what initially appears to be a singular spot on the floor but logic would dictate that it's actually just tracking her relative position on the floor because she's moving???

It doesn't make any sense unless you read it as "look at this hot teenager." Even as a training montage it's just really odd because there's no focus on WHAT SHE'S DOING or the progression of time, it doesn't work as a scene transition because there's no establishing shot and very little continuity between the first several panels...it's just a fucking mess.
>>
>>83253200
Given everything else being so detailed and the quality of your composition, it's a bit jarring that the protagonist faces right and has nearly the same upper body posture in all three panels. In cases like this it would be beneficial to do things like changing her line of sight in the first panel, reorienting her in the third panel, and maybe change her posture in said panel.

Leaning forward in panel three, maybe while near or against the pillar, would make for a more visually appealing page...at least, I think so.

Huh, I guess I learned something new today.
Do the sources you have show anything of how they were held? That trio of dots and the visible elbows on some of them make me think they might have had a protruding Y- or T-shaped center grip like pic related, rather than something that straps to the forearm. But then again, Spain had a lot of contact with North African and Arab people that did strap round shields to their forearms, so that's definitely also a possibility. Also when I googled to see if I could find some better images of them, I came across one source saying that Spanish shields were pure hardened leather, rather than having a wooden core - that might make for another interesting contrast from the northlanders and Richard's people.

>I don't know what the square thing is either... I also saw it in modern illustrations mainly but also in the Roda Bibble
Google gave me a few images of the bible in question, and I think I know what you're seeing. Are you sure there isn't another line from the square going under the armpit in the images you're thinking of? To me, it looks like the artist was trying to depict the "Varangian bra" (I don't know of any other name for it - it's a leather harness that goes over the armor) that you find a lot in Byzantine art. IIRC nobody's sure if it was an actual thing that people wore or if it was just an artistic convention, like how you find a lot of illustrations of legendary knights wearing Roman-inspired armor in the renaissance.

>I honestly thought you planned chapter 1 out thoroughly, as it reads and flows really well
Thanks! Sadly, I have to admit it was very loosely planned. Some of the scenes and panels were really clear in my mind long before I got to them (like on pg 27 when Skalmöld calms Skeggöld down during the sunrise, or the final shot of the raven flying into space) but a lot of the pages in between those moments were very improvised because all the script I had was "they fight the ghost" for three pages. On the upside, it left me in a good position to capitalize on any sudden bright ideas, like how they ended up meeting Asbiorn et al - I didn't know anything about pg 30 when I was drawing pg 27 and thought they'd just find their own way to the river and Biarne's farm, but then as I was working on pg 28 I realized it might be a good idea to introduce them to the eventual "antagonist" in person, rather than only learning of him second hand from the slave.

>it gets confusing sometimes if you use a mid tone value grey background with unclear panel boarders
Yeah, I thought I could use the flowing together of borderless panels to my advantage like pic related, but it turns out I'm not actually Will Eisner so I'm going to stop making it the default and only do it when I feel like I know what I'm using it for.
I'm not gonna totally stop having borderless panels, but panels with borders are gonna be a lot more frequent in chapter 2. I wanna keep the grey background for now, since I think it'll work better when I'm not forcing myself to avoid panel borders, and I've always loved how it works with highlights. Might change it depending on the lighting of the scene.

That punch doesn't look like it would have hit her if she'd just stood still, and she doesn't look like she's backstepping or leaning out of the way.

Artistically, it's usually a better idea to have characters have their opposite leg forwards when punching; the twist in the torso makes it look more powerful.

>Whipkick is 7 Foot 1 in stature while the woman in the picture is 3 feet over him.

So she's 10 feet tall?

In that case, you're significantly understating it in the picture. Whipkick is bending down in his knees while she's apparently standing with her legs straight (just look at her butt!). And he's punching at what appears to be shoulder height, because his punch is coming out at a ninety degree angle to his spine. Unless she's decided to fight him while standing in a four foot deep hole, that doesn't make any sense.
If they're on a level plane, he'd have to be literally grinding up against her or jumping to even be able to reach her shoulder.

When there's a big size disparity between two characters, I find it's usually a good idea to work out the action in a profile view with stick men before I draw it from a more interesting angle. It's way easier to keep track of.

I don't really like the teacher's pose in the final panel.
Her arm kind of looks like it's resting on the foreground student's head, her head is suddenly bigger, and the way she doesn't even look at what's going on with the door seems a little forced.
Having her just look at the door with a blank expression would be funnier, imo.

The line of action still isn't very strong. Try googling a "superman punch" and using that for reference. Or something like Little Mac's forward+b in Smash, or the classic Shoryuken from Street Fighter since she's so tall.

I also think the girl could do with catching the fist with her arm extended, like a stiff arm from US football.

>>83288894
I'm afraid I can't comment on the use - only shields I've played around with are bucklers and viking/saxon style round shields. But from what I understand, a Y-shape grip isn't any more uncomfortable to hold than an ][-grip. The big difference between a shield with a boss and a shield with a flat front is that you're not holding in the exact center of the shield's balance - but if the shield's front is curved/domed rather than completely flat, the balance is behind the shield, rather than inside of it, and you don't need a boss to make a protective dome over the cutout for your hand.

The curve where her thigh meets her crotch on our left seems a bit too convex, especially since it leaves no space between the leotard(?) and her sock.

bit hard to read at this size, mate. just saying.
weird ending since theyre still acting that way as they do it, that makes it creepier by far. also interesting seeing a comic this done having sketchbits still on it, do you finish each panel completely before moving on? or was that just a last-minute addition
>>83303535
if any comic's world is going to have that though it'd be this one. also while we're nitpicking, the dumpster is too tall for them to be looking down into it like in the preceding panels

Im still sketching the first pages of my comic, i want to make sure the pacing is just right , not too slow nor fast, i wanna make the first chapter in a way so one day it can be used to make a cartoon pilot

anyways i remade the cover because the last one was more of a clored sketch and i also added a place holder logo

also what titele sounds more catchy

>heartbeat beetle
or just
>heart beetle

i liked the first one a bit more for the "beat" repetition but it is kinda like having 3 words, so the second one might be easier to remember and is also kind of a wordplay
>>
>>83303618
You're right about the readability. I'll work to fix that tomorrow. As for the sketch of the two of them walking, that was a last minute addition.

>>83303912
'Heart Beetle' sounds better to me.

>>83303912

...How do you quantify the inherent lewdness of feet?
Like, I get that some feet might be considered sexier than others, depending on proportions and not having things like visible veins, wrinkles, crooked toes etc, but "lewd"?
It's not like the foot is being presented in a sexual or fetishized context. She's just walking.

>>
>>83308252
How seriously are you going to take it when people start drawing lewd Skeggold X Skalmold?
>>
>>83308648
Not so seriously that I'm going to make it canon, but I'd still appreciate the effort.
I mean, I didn't design them for sex appeal (like, I intentionally gave them a few physical traits each that I find super unappealing but that I thought fit their character and world), but I'm not gonna tell people they're enjoying the story wrong just because they don't see it the way I do.
I'll probably put it in a separate section from clean fanart once I start putting fanart on the site, though.

It's hard to but in words. But it's a really well-drawn foot and you obviously put a lot of time and effort in it. It's not a club with round, bulbous toes. The heel is shaped well, and the way the toes are curved around the foot is realistic. The shapes of the toes themselves are realistic and cute! The big toenails are cute too!

The angle is very lewd. You get to see her soles and the underside of her big toe.

It's a prettier foot than 99% of the ones you see in actual fetish art. The coloring on the mud gives it a shiny, almost candy-like sheen. It almost looks like a panel from a giantess "smushing" doujin, if you imagine the rocks/mud-splats as islands. I would definitely let her smash my face to smithereens with her cute smelly lewd feet!

>>
>>83315141
Side boob and underboob are hit because its hiding the main event (the nipple). Some people find covering just a little (like a person being naked but having the crotch censored by a little something) to be hot.
>>
>>83315789
hot*
dammit.
>>
>>83315789
okay but then why would they sometimes be thought of as hotter than the top, which you see more often, and which has cleavage?
>>
>>83316085
>which you see more often
That's exactly why. It's a part of this sexual object you rarely see outside of intimate situations.
>>
>>83315325
Glad you like it!

>>83315141
Yeah, human sexuality doesn't make much sense a lot of the time, but stuff like sideboob, underboob, cleavage and such are perfectly understandable once you've been introduced to the underlying axioms (breasts are sexy!) and taboos (can't show breasts!), even if you don't feel the appeal yourself. I just don't see why the specific angle of the shot would make the foot more lewd to someone with a thing for feet - it doesn't seem to follow from the underlying "feet are sexy" axiom.
I guess it might just be semantics - I usually view lewd as something inherent and intentional in the source, where he might be using it as something measured by the viewer's reaction.

>>83316085
Novelty and level of taboo, mostly. Seeing the top of the breast is common because it's just the extended neck opening. The side and underside are far rarer because there's little practical reason to design clothes to reveal them (consider those boob window sweaters that people drew everyone in a couple months back - a lot of people find that more sexy than regular cleavage, because it's explicitly there to show off the cleavage).
>>
>>83315141
>>83316085

I assume the same reason the nipple is not; it's something you tend to keep covered. Had you grown up in some Sub-Saharan African country or ancient Minoa I don't think the nipple would have phased you.

You OFTEN see cleavage, but under-boob is a rare sight

I actually so think some of the "wierder" beauty standards are quite fascinating; between China's bound feet, Kayan neck-rings, and Ethiopian Lip Plates, you don't need the internet to be into "wierd" things. I'd love to draw some of that but it doesn't fit the setting...
>>
>>83316461
i think that follows perfectly with feet and you just explained why
>>
>>83316461
>>83316705
you never see em unless someone's in a towel or a swimsuit or a bathrobe, orrr.. pajamas..
and you only see the bottoms if someone's relaxing or sleeping. so there's a common thread of 'not serious business, much more potential sexy time'
alternately the 'natural person' be they a hippie, a fairy, someone from a primitive country, the common thread there is you can expect less uptightness.
>>
>>83316705
Except feet aren't secondary sex characteristics. Everyone has them. You can justify a lot of weird fetishes with connections to biological functions that aid in reproduction (Hips, ass=Babies, pregnancy=literally babies, Fat and tits=good provider for babies) but feet don't have any of that. It's just a fixation spurred on by the internet allowing for more and more specific bullshit "communities" where spergs can pretend they aren't mentally unstable.
>>
>>83255734
I disagree, I think the number of panels is justified because it creates a sense of time passing as she trains. We see the moment as glimpses. I do however agree that they use a up a lot of panels is Miss Melee for step-by-step movements especially in the fight at the beginning. Perhaps it could be more economical but on the other hand it creates a cinematic feel to it.
>>83278449
I'm pretty sure the establishing shot of the environment was planned to be included in the next couple of pages. It's entirely possible to start a scene with a close-up and then reveal where we are. But you are right about the fact that we should get to see the environment now that there is a new scene in a new place.
>>
>>83316564
>China's bound feet, Kayan neck-rings, and Ethiopian Lip Plates
I think the common theme here is impracticality. Like a peacock's plumage, you can tell the person has got it made because they're living with an intentional handicap - they're got people doing the work that they can't do themselves.
You see a lot of the same stuff in the West - a beach or UV bed tan is way more high status than a farmer's tan, because one is a sign of having a lot of leisure time and one is a sign of having to work for your food out in the sun.

>>83316705
There's no taboo against showing feet in the west, top or bottom, but I guess the bottom being a rarer sight could explain it. Or maybe the intimacy/vulnerability of presenting the sensitive underside.

The only time it was every an issue that I've ever seen is when someone wore sandals to work. That was only an issue because it was considered a safety hazard. It was a job that involved heavy lifting so he could've easily dropped something on his toes and gotten hurt.

Besides that I see people walking in thong sandals in the city and no one pays attention.

In Brazil people wear flip flops everywhere. I find it gross, but there's no taboo at all. Girls go to school in jeans and flip flops, the ugliest combination, and they think they are well dressed. Guys just don't give a fuck and they wear shorts and flip flops.
Shoes are for work or more formal social gatherings I guess. If you go out at night you should wear shoes (unless your are just going out with friends to a bar or a fast food place I guess, then flip flops are allowed.)
Unless you are barefoot, nobody will throw you out of any store either, it's normal to wear flip flops.

Not even that person but I have never seen this anti foot whatever you are talking about on tv or anywhere UNLESS someone's feet looks disgusting. It is natural to dislike ugly things. Are you just looking for how much things cost in comparison to your current earnings? Or are you comparing local jobs earnings/cost?
Because prices in Brazil are high because of taxation and crushing regulation. Besides being highly taxed in goods, government also eats most of our income and business earnings to fund their inefficient state run businesses and programs. There is even a thing businessmen call "Brazil cost" that accounts for how hard it is to run/trade with brazilian businesses.

Good fuckin' luck being a "nerd" in Brasil. It was fine back when the PS1 and PS2 were easy as hell to pirate, but now it's ridiculous. When my Brazilian cousins came to visit (Eurofag), they bought SO MUCH clothing from brands they could barely afford in Brazil due to high tariffs.

Have you considered changing Mimi's outfit so Charles can pop out from under her shirt, rather than from under her skirt?
It seems like a lot of people are making that mistake.
>>
>>83320632
No because the dress is there specifically to hide where he pops out. A shirt wouldn't do that. It would also be so gentlemanly for him to lift up her shirt every time he has to do something. At least he can bend to not lift up her skirt.
>>
>>83320816
he could pop out of her sleeve once in a while
>>
>>83320078
But I mean, 1 dollar costs 4 brazilian reais thanks to inflationary policies and all that, so... let's say, staying at a hotel would cost nothing to an american who earned his dollars in the US, services are pretty cheap, BUT, if an american were to buy an iphone here, our goods, specially imported tech, are so highly taxed he would be paying more for it than he would have had if he bought it in the US.

Buying an iphone 6s on apple's website costs $649, buying it online in Brazil will cost you no less than R$3000 ($840), average price being R$4000 ($1120). You don't want to buy a car in Brazil, here 50% of the price we pay is taxes, meaning, if we buy a car for R$40.000, the market price was actually R$20.000, the other half is what the government eats. So yeah, Brazil is pretty expensive in general.

I'm conceptualizing a series and want feedback on the basic premise

Title: Colors
Tagline: Would you like to play a game?
Plot: 6 young adults (3 of whom are victims of the justice system and 3 whom have benefited from it) are approached by an entity to "play a game". the "game" has no defined terms or rules and only the entity itself knows what the objective is. Upon agreeing to play the game they are granted special powers. The strength of these powers increase when the player "does the right thing". the six players form the super hero team "Colors" and fight for justice. However amidst very different ideas of what "justice" is our heroes discover that "the right thing" isn't as black and white as they thought.

Handsome Dan has a dog, Lulu , sweet thing. Rescue pit bull. Dog fighting is a pretty big issue in MA, or it was back when Lulu was conceived of. She fits within the wheelhouse of things he'd have to have dealt with at one point, and "Cop adopts former dog fighting pit bull" reads as a nice puff piece.

>>83322149
I wanted the story to start more black and white as the characters each have their own experiences, and then have it change through their interaction with each other, their powers, criminals and villains.
>>
>>83322477
Not necessarily reformed - maybe they were unlikely to be a repeat offender in the first place, maybe they weren't a particularly bad person to start with. Maybe they're an asshole who refuses to admit that they deserved their punishment. Maybe they got punished way harder than they should have because of politics (like selling the drugs that the judge's secretary's son overdosed on). Maybe they took the fall for something their partner (who didn't get caught) did, or maybe they took the blame because they'd get less punishment, being a minor.

There's a lot of things you could do.

That's partially the reason to post in these threads, no? As long as you listen to criticism you don't get complacent. It's difficule to improve in a bubble, which is why communities like these are great, especially since the ananymous nature of 4chan prevents it from becoming a hugbox.

I'm generally confident enough in it not to post WiPs anymore, but I still get helpful comments.

Hey man, writing is an one one develops much like drawing. Granted, it's probably harder to develop since it's easy for someone to give feedback on a page, while for them to comment on the writing they have to read through a significant amount of your work,
>>
>>83336718
Writing in general is kind of a bitch to get advice on. I mean there's stuff like story structure and pacing, which you can easily get help on, but a lot of writing stuff is subjective. And stuff differs for every story. Getting help with art is a lot easier, since there's a lot more objective rules to drawing.

I think my problem is that I've written a lot, but never sat down and actually tried to make my writing a GOOD finished piece before, whereas a I have a lot of clean, finished drawings.

How does this thread feel about sexual content in webcomics?

I feel like it's not exactly needed for my story, but I feel like it could also add to my story if done tastefully. Or maybe I'm being a retard.

Opinions?
>>
>>83337769
Depends.
Sexual content in webcomics needs context unless the webcomic in of itself is sexually explicit.
If an author were to suddenly show two characters banging each other without context afterwards, I'd be kind of confused at the very least.
>>
>>83322980
this is a really good base, are you planning on doing soft shading for the whole thing? is it going to be black and white? if so I think it would look better with hard shading and maybe ocassional crosshatching. could just be a taste thing but since you leave a lot of empty white spaces I think it'd flow better with harder black and white shading. also it would make your negative space look better.

There are very few instances of a comic having explicit sex scenes where I felt like it added something to the story.
A lot of the time, I feel like the author is insulting my intelligence. "Look!" it feels like it's saying, "Boobs! Sex! You like those, right!? That means you have to like this comic!" while spending pages on something that could and should have been done in two or three panels.

I guess the main thing to remember is that, like with any other kind of spectacle, you should never have a "sex scene". You should have scenes that progress the narrative that happen to have sex in 'em.

>>83337529
You could still get feedback on the parts that you're not too in love with to change. Even if you can't make it not an autistic shitpile, you can still make it the best autistic shitpile it can be.
Besides, the internet is full of shitheads with no taste. There's an audience out there for anything.
>>
>>83338630
>You should have scenes that progress the narrative that happen to have sex in 'em.

I've noticed that more often than not, when sex actually progresses the story, tthey'll usuall just show the characters getting undressed, the camera panning out to the sky or something, and then the aftermath.

Even in something like Berserk, which does not shy away from being very explicit about sex and rape, doesn't actually *show* the sex between the main character and his brown love interest, because the actual intercourse would distract the reader from what's really important from a character development standpoint.

So I'm planning to have a little girl get brutally and graphically executed by bad guys in my comic.
Is there a way I can have her be nude and have it come off as genocide-style horrible pragmatism ("why would we waste clothes on dead nonpersons"), rather than some little-girl-degradation-and-gore fetish on my part?
>>
>>83339248
I'm afraid not. Just put her in a potato sack dress.
>>
>>83339412
You're probably right. I guess I could have the bad guys discuss it to make it explicit, or have a hope spot where they take her cuffs off to undress her, but that would throw off the pacing and it might still come off as "author tries desperately to justify shoving his fetish in audience's face".
>>
>>83339248
>Is there a way I can have her be nude and have it come off as genocide-style horrible pragmatism ("why would we waste clothes on dead nonpersons"), rather than some little-girl-degradation-and-gore fetish on my part?

What if her clothes got thorn as she was captured so that the bad guy comments on how they were wasted before killing her? This way you avoid people thinking you're getting off on it (though really, if you draw it right I'm sure people will be able to tell there's nothing sexual happening), but also make it come across that the bad guy is horribly pragmatic.
>>
>>83339248
I assume the little girl is not central to the story so you could have the protagonists find the body at some point, comment that "they even took the clothes", and cover her with a blanket or coat.
>>
>>83335313
I mentioned it because op mentioned most of the other sellers were fanartists. That's all. I'm aware I can sell my own stuff. That's what I did.
>>
>>83339860
Dammit, got cut off again.

The reason mentioned not doing anime cons because I don't like fanart is because that's pretty much the best way to guarantee you'll at least make your money back. People go to those to look for specific kinds of things and original stuff is harder to sell. At an independent comics festival, which Mocca is, people are more open minded to things that are unfamiliar.
>>
>>83339759
The little girl has entirely given up on escaping at this point and was captured peacefully to start with. But maybe I could have the clothes be old and worn and have the bad guys comment on them not being worth saving or repurposing.

>>83339841
So,
>execution scene, girl is clothed
>protagonists eventually come across the girl, who's been stripped post mortem
That's not a bad idea either.

I guess I could similarly have the bad guys comment as she's dying that wait, they should have undressed her before killing her because now there's blood and worse all over her clothes, but that might come off as too comical.
>>
>>83340000
Don't over-expose this stuff, just have a character say one short line like "they even took the clothes..."

You can convey the whole scene without showing anything but the characters' faces and one line of dialogue. Then one character takes a blanket and places it down getting close to the camera, and then there's a shot of the covered body.

I kind of want it to be overexposed and tasteless, though. The primary internal conflict/theme of the story is the main character trying to find a meaning or purpose to living in a relentlessly horrible world. Sanitising it seems like it would dull the impact and make it harder for the reader to empathize with him.

>>83340320
I don't really mind people reading rape into it so long as they don't think it's intended to be sexy. That's a good line though.

>you should never have a "sex scene". You should have scenes that progress the narrative

I have two moments planned out which are less 'sex scenes' and more 'instances of sex which need some degree of detail because they're integral to evolving the character relationship which itself is important to evolving the plot.'

The relationship moreorless goes from hate/indifference respectively>begrudging respect>begrudgingly working together>actually working together as bros>quietly acknowledged affection>outright love.

I want to throw a hatefuck in there at the beginning to solidify the attraction dynamic and spur some motivations, and later a moment to cement that 'outright love' thing.

On second thought, actually reading this makes me realize I should cut the second one. There's already a better situation which does exactly the same thing.

Is it both bubbles in the first panel? I've been meaning to make my own font, just haven't gotten around to it yet, def. gonna do it though
>>
>>83342010
Is that story best told through explicit sex scenes, though?
At the point where two people who hate each other are going to bed together and still hate each other just as hard in the morning, I think you've gotten the point across. The specifics of what they're doing between the sheets seems like a superfluous detail.

>>83342069
The symmetry does have some potential to it. Putting characters in the same situation twice is a great way to showcase their development inbetween.

My problem is that I want to make a comic both to escape from this world, and to savage it, while lacking interest in making a comic set within a perfect fantasy world where everything is so perfect that all the perfect people can do is telephone earth to tell earthlings that earth and earthlings fucking suck and should be ashamed of themselves.

And so we end up trying to worldbuild with an impossible goal: To build a preferable alternative world, a charming and rather nice one - but one that's still plausible and relatively realistic. And to retain realism while being of the view that realism/verisimilitude generally necessitates underscoring just how shit everything is and having "realistic" characters as miserable people living meaningless existences writing posts about writing webcomics, neither post nor comic of interest to anyone.

To some degree I exaggerate my pessimism, but the underlying point remains. Attempting to build a world which is both a realistic representation of this one and a nice fantasy alternative used to escape from this one is not a good goal.

Escapism is futile because fiction is just an extension of reality. You should try using fiction to confront reality instead.

>>
>>83345421
>Does Skalmold have a symbiote?
No, but she does have parasites.

You're not the first to point out the similarity between the Spider Man villain and Long-nose here (unless that was also you), but hopefully she won't be considered a ripoff or anything, even though they're both mostly-black shapeshifting monsters from beyond the earth.
>>
>>83342010
>>83345421
>Don't be a prude.

I agree with >>83342285 completely, but I've been called a prude before, so that doesn't really help my case.
The thing is the common thing right now is to be as explicit as possible, people see boobs and blood in media and they think "wow they aren't afraid to show that, this show/comic I am watching/reading is really mature", but being the norm doesn't make it's automatically tasteful.

The thing is, OP, if you want to make this sex scene, fucking just do it already. A sex scene is never really unavoidable, it doesn't add to the story, and you know this. You want to make the scenes tastefully, but there's no way to make a graphic sex scene tasteful, and that's it. However, people don't care about tasteful anymore, nobody will care about your sex scene, unless your writing leading up to it is awkward, forced or just bad. To the other anon, pointing these things out doesn't make one a prude.

What's with these guys asking if you can do pissing scenes tastefully, sex scenes tastefully... is it the same guy? Don't you have some sort of moral compass of your own?
>>
>>83346218
>is it the same guy? Don't you have some sort of moral compass of your own?
Piss Guy here, there's at least two of us.
I'm from a country that got way harder into the sexual revolution than a lot of my intended international audience, and even in my day-to-day I get a lot of shocked reactions when I voice ideas that I personally find to be tame and innocuous, so I find it's very useful to get other people's opinions when I worry that I'm about to enter sensitive territory.
>>
>>83339248
>>83339412
>>83339632
you guys cannot seriously have priorities this skewed. are you really worried someone's going to be like 'well graphic execution is fine but nudity is evil!' and do you really want to cater to those people?
>>
>>83346217
wait, this is something she's always been able to do?
>>
>>83346575
by all means reject the 'sexual revolution' but don't try to gain your boundaries from the common man on the street. and when it comes to -drawings- don't have any boundaries. if you're telling a story, just make sure it fits the story.
>>
>>83346635
You're assuming that's Skalmöld.
>>
>>83346848
ahh i see, of course.
well i'm actually with the other guy, i assumed this was something coating / posessing Skalmy. But it's fun finding out you're wrong. this is one of the great but also sad things about doing a comic. it's in production so long that you really get to enjoy that 'in the moment' aspect, the fan anticipation and speculation. buuut.. often you don't get readers til it's already way into full swing and there are whole eras nobody ever gets to speculate about
>>
>>83331563
>how many of you guys attend comic cons/ anime cons and actually sell your stuff? ive only done one so far but most sellers were just fanartists and didnt do comics.

I do, several times a year (in the UK). There used to be just a handful of comics focused events every year, but we now have a situation where every couple of weeks there's a "comic con" which is really a pop-culture multi-media event. I've taken to focusing on those shows which really are just about the comics, or are very local to me.
I'll be at a small, hometown based Anime Con next weekend, but which will also have some comics and gaming events on the schedule. While I'll be selling my own comics, I hope to cover costs with bespoke sketching on the day (eg RPG characters and OCs). I suspect the other Artist tables will be taken up by fanart print makers though.
Fan art in moderation is fine; I've got no problem if you have a few unique art pieces for sale, as a sideline to your own comics and original art. But if your primary source of income is mass produced fan art prints, then you're no better than a bootlegger, leeching off someone else's popularity.

For people like us, you want to look for small press oriented/friendly shows, like TCAF, MoCCA or Thought Bubble. If you're in the UK, I'll even include the MCM events, as while they're multi-media extravaganzas, the Comics Village within them is a small press friendly area.

> id like to get a small community going that actually meets up in person
Given how spread out we are internationally, this could be tricky. Your best bet is to find out if there are other small press / self-publishing comics creators in your country/region.

just make a disgusting world if you want to write a disgusting comic. cynical comics arent automatically bad or anything, if you have the art to back it up you could make a very good comic about wastes of space reading 4chan all day.
>>
>>83346590
No, I'm just being frank with the fact that showing a nude young girl getting brutally murdered is going to be assumed as some perversion. He can do it anyway if he's feeling bold about it, but that doesn't change the fact it will be seen as some awful fetishization, which is all he was asking about.

you can either kowtow to assumptions or you can change them by challenging them
if you do the former you're making it harder on everyone trying the latter

The epic saga continues. Page 4 roughs/pencils.

It occurs to me that while I have three quests planned out (at 2 pages each or so), I could easily extend the storyline if I come up with more short quest gags. Already planning to extend it by a page as the last page could do with being split into two so it's not as cramped.

Depends. Color only adds to a comic if the coloring is well done and interesting. I'd rather read a comic in grey scale than a comic colored by someone with no grasp on color theory.
Plus, I'm doing my own comic in grey scale, so I'm biased.

No wings? I know they weren't always winged in the mythological depictions, but it seems strange for a generic fantasy MMO manticore.

Are you going to do internal panel divisions for the fight?

I hope there's a little more to the joke than "mob drop rates don't make sense", because honestly that's a pretty tired joke at this point.

The manticores will be wingless as that'll be easier for me to draw, to be frank.

Might make the fight block entirely borderless, but with some kind of demarcation.

Yes, it's a "drop rates are shit" joke, but it's one I haven't told yet. Even if everyone knows the punchline, how you tell the joke (or story) can be just as important.

>>83342086
The lettering in panel one could make better use of the space in the speech balloons, certainly. The book's speech balloon can be moved a little more into the corner of panel one as there's plenty of room there, maybe make it bigger as well. "Woah!" in panel four can also be moved to the right. You can also shorten the balloon tails, no need to have them running right up to the characters.
I'd give rock dude in panel three a stretched out arm or leg to indicate he's kicked or pushed the door open with force.
