As a kid, this episode made me believe that "Jazz men" playing Saxophones late at night by themselves was a common practice and was considered socially acceptable.

What weird things did cartoons make you think were more common than they actually were as a kid?

Hard mode, no quick sand or hot lava.

So is eating the skin of pigs faces.

I was pretty on the ball as a kid. I worked sex out at a young age.

But two things eluded me. I could never tell Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck apart and I thought bats were fictional creatures like unicorns and dragons because of their association with vampires.

I thought clothing mishaps in public were as common as cartoons let on. I was wrong, but it led to me enjoy my fetish of girls becoming disrobed in public and/or it happening to me

I was sitting in a parking lot one evening in the truck with my uncle waiting for my grandma and mom to come out of the store and I was looking overhead in the darkening sky and saw some screeching "birds" fly over and mentioned it to my uncle.

He said, "Those are bats." and I was like, what whaaaaaaaat? Bats are real?!?!

Fun fact: The whole "eating carrots gives you better eye sight" was a propaganda bit from world war two. The allied bomb sights were so superior that the command had to come up with a reason why that didn't give it away. Bugs Bunny was in the war and he ate carrots, so the smoke screen was that American pilots ate more carrots and that gave them better eye sight. It became ingrained in the culture and even to this day, it's taken as a fact. Beta carotene will help your eyes. It will not give you better eye sight.

Because of this bumper and others like it I thought that cartoon characters were real people and just actors in cartoon form. But, still kept their personalities off the camera. Things like this, Space Jam, and Who framed Rodger Rabbit lead me to believe this. I was so heartbroken when my mother told me the truth. I had to be about 5 or 6. I didn't have many friends and one of my dreams at this age was to meet these characters and befriend them. All was lost.

I used to think censor bars were a type of underpants.

As a kid I had no idea what censorship was, or that there was a committee of people who "blacked out" offensive things. It got even more confusing when cartoons would get meta, and the characters would interact or acknowledge censor bars on the screen.

I had no clue that in shows where characters interact with censor bars it was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek "whoops, can't show that on a Christian image board!"

Carrots are fine when they're fresh. When they've been out of the ground a while, though, or when they're particularly large and woody, the skin contains quantities of foul-tasting stuff (including alcohol) to put any browsing animals off eating them before they can root properly and continue their growth cycle.

Eat fresher carrots; they're sweet. In fact, carrots contain rather a large amount of sugars, as do most root vegetables.

Being a kid in a pre-Internet era and with access only to softcore porn on Cinemax, I didn't know about vaginas and thought you have sex by pushing your dick down until it's vertical and rubbing the shaft on the woman's crotch.

Tried to masturbate in the shower (because raunchy comedies always had the guys doing it in the shower) under that notion. It wasn't pretty.
>>

Sometimes things sneak up on you. For three years there was a kind of nerdy hanger-on to the "cool kid" group, usually just helping them out with their homework and shit to that effect.

Halfway through senior year that kid had become the undisputed king of the school. He'd spent the past few years accumulating blackmail material and other leverage on anyone in the school who mattered. The student council pres. was forced to resign, three members of the basketball team got expelled, legend has it he fucked half the girls volleyball team.

I was on the "average" scale so I was never involved in any of that courtroom drama bullshit to any great extent, but apparently a conversation I'd once had with the kid was instrumental in him having three people suspended.

I swear to god that guy's going to be a Fortune 500 CEO or in prison by the time of our Reunion.

Facebook was already a thing, someone created a fake profile and kept posting salacious stories about teachers and students, really nasty stuff that was mostly proven real. >schools were separated into clicks and categories like "jocks" and "cheerleaders" and "nerds"

Boy, this one was a lie. When I was growing up, jocks and nerds hung out together, Cheerleaders were generally likable, the high grade students were sociable, etc. The problem came from faction wars. We'd have disputes with other grades (the seniors in particular were assholes back when I was a junior). We had wars over ideals and political affiliations, we even had fights just because of it. My high school, at its best, was a warzone. At its worst, it was a slaughterhouse.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinach#In_popular_culture

>The comics and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor Man has been portrayed since 1931 as having a strong affinity for spinach, becoming physically stronger after consuming it. The commonly accepted version of events states this portrayal was based on faulty calculations of the iron content. In this version, German scientist Emil von Wolff misplaced a decimal point in an 1870 measurement of spinach's iron content, leading to an iron value ten times higher than it should have been, and this faulty measurement was not noticed until the 1930s. This caused the popular misconception that spinach is exceedingly high in iron that makes the body stronger.

It varies. It's quite an interesting look at American culture when you get right down into it.

For homes:

If someone is staying over for a while, the shoes come off.
If there's rain/mud/snow outside, the shoes come off.
Unless you know the person well, the shoes don't come off until you're told- it comes off as imposing.
Socks are the limit for guests, even if normally they go barefoot in their own houses.

I thought that cats were all girls and dogs all boys. Had no clue that there were both types and said "good BOY!" to all dogs. I did this late into my teens, when my family ended up with a bitch.

I too thought that belief became reality if you just did it hard enough. Now I'm not entirely sure that's untrue, but not in any GOOD way, more the "entered into a vegetative state" way. Like some anons above, I daydream a LOT, sometimes at work, sometimes while I drive (work-related driving occurs kind of a lot).

I believed in wish granting creatures for WAY longer than I think is reasonable.

I believed that magic was innate in everyone, it just took the correct spell-words and total belief that it WOULD work.

I also believed I was god because the sun, and moon followed me while I walked.

There was a time where he went on a two year hiatus because he was frustrated with the current limits of his skill. Living in Manhattan, in order to avoid disturbing the neighbor(s), he took to practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge.

Haven't heard of anyone else doing this so wouldn't be surprised if the idea of Sax men playing by themselves at night originated from him.

In New Zealand in the 90s and early 2000s, people here rarely seemed to wear shoes at all. It wasn't uncommon for people to walk barefoot down the street and into a McDonalds.

I think it's a cultural thing. I've always taken my shoes off when entering a house so as not to track dirt or mud in, and my feet feel better free anyway.

I think they both sincerely believed the legs would grow back. People tend to be more stupid then cruel.

I can't believe sometimes how little some people know about or care about the world around them. Where I live is considered the cradle of North American paleontology, but because there are no dinosaurs nobody gives a shit, and when I tell people who have lived here for decades about fossil hunting in their own state they weren't even aware of the treasure under their own feet.

I'm kind of glad I'm not a science teacher or some shit, I think I would have died of sadness.

Probably just an old simpleton who lacks the empathy to change his ways even slightly. Because it's so much harder to stab the frog beforehand rather than struggle to keep it still while you cut its legs off.

I wouldn't say it was just cartoons, but media in general...

As a very young black kid in the South, I distinctly remember having no fucking idea what a "Jew" was, and why being one was worth any kind of attention. They seemed to look and act like every other white person.

So Jewish were supposed to be manipulative, wealthy, had relatives from Europe, eat weird food, control the media/government, tell corny jokes, are often doctors/lawyers, and are bad at sports? I got that, but what I didn't understand was was how this differentiated them from any other white person stereotype. Why did being these things make people a "Jew"?

I would see characters in shows that were supposed to be WASPS (which I had no concept of) and thought they were Jewish because they also fit a lot of the same stereotypes from my (admittedly limited at the time) perspective.

So I concluded that Jewish people (and WASPS) were just what rural white people thought city white people were like.

I also thought all white people were Catholic: they all go to a different church than me (which was bigger and fancier), where services are apparently boring as hell because nobody dances or sings or bursts into tongues, priests wear collars, and their Jesus is white. I thought there was a different version of Jesus for every race... like Santa Claus... and black Santa liked Coke and tea cakes cookies instead of white milk and chocolate chip cookies.

I also didn't really get hippies. I thought they were some ethnic group related to Native Americans that had been wiped out by the government in the 70's or something since they tended to wear feathers, body paint, and Indian-style clothes and talked about magic and spirits and played drums and shit. The war of their extermination is what they were protesting.

I also used to think weed and crack were the same thing and that clouds disappeared at night.

To be so young and naive again.

>I can't believe sometimes how little some people know about or care about the world around them.

That's just human nature. That's why I give very little credence to cryptozoologists who try to argue that local claims of monster sightings aren't cases of locals misidentifying stuff/making shit up because, "The locals clearly know the difference between X and Y."

Even river monsters does this.

Locals don't know shit. To a local, every snake is the most venomous snake in the world and is like 3 feet longer than it actually is. Every fish gains 10 lbs when a new person hears about it. That dog you saw in the garbage must have surely been a long lost dire wolf.

I can't count how many times I've been called by people born in raised in my hometown to deal with a "copperhead/cottonmouth" only to encounter a ratsnake/garter snake/water snake/earthsnake/anything but a motherfucking copperhead/cottonmouth.

I remember once being called to deal with a cobra, which ended up being a completely harmless Hognose. I can understand not knowing what a Hognose snake is, but surely you know there are no cobras in the mid-west, right?

People just don't to admit, "I just don't know what the hell it is" because that doesn't make as good a story as, "I almost stepped on a cobra, man!".

My experience, as someone who is a teacher and went through a teaching degree relatively recently, is that it's kind of half and half. You have the people who got into it because they genuinely want to help children become better and teach the new generation, and have the people who clearly only went there because it seemed like an easy degree.

I will say, though, that some of my classmates seriously depressed me. Look, if you're a small-minded nationalistic gonk that can't calculate the surface of a triangle and complains at having to do basic highschool physics, you are not qualified to be teaching kids - both in the academical and ethical sense.

I see this sentiment a hell of a lot and it's rarely stated by females themselves; hardly a coincidence. My experience has been the complete opposite. Not only do I have a tightly knit group of female friends who are bro as fuck to one another, but, growing up, my classrooms had ridiculous melodrama brew between cliques from both sexes. Boy on boy back stabbing, girl on girl back stabbing, and everything inbetween.

The key is not associating with folks who chronically have issues with others/specific demographics. Those people fucking suck and clearly set themselves up for drama.

Tl;dr: women do like women, it's just that a lot of you aren't hanging out with the girls/women who enjoy, exclusively or otherwise, hanging out with other girls/women.
