Show us your comic!
Ask for advice and opinions on any webcomic-related subject from people with terrible tastes and no practical experience! If they actually bother to notice your hours of hard work, rather than just ignore it in favor of shitposting and drama, that is!
It's fun for the whole family!

It's not a good conversation starter to insult the person you're trying to talk to, Anon.
If you wanted it done to your specifications, you could have done it yourself in the 12 hours between the death of the last thread and this one.

So, someone way back in the day posted a bit of advice about how a piece of spaghetti could substitute for a nib in a tablet stylus. If you're still around, thanks, that's just saved me a bunch of money.

>>83163090
Much as I hate it because I've already spent a lot of time on that panel, you've got a point.
I can't really add more panels because I don't want the strip getting too tall, but I'll try to figure something out.
As for how long I spend on these, I generally spend between 8 and 20 hours per page once I've sketched it (you'd think the strips would be significantly faster than the full pages, but I haven't found that to be the case). I actually time stamp all my wips that I post.

Have the black chick's face in the panel parallel to the blonde's, looking downwards and equally shocked. You're trying to put too much into only a half-panel and it doesn't really need that much detail to convey, anyway.

I see, I am sorry I couldn't be more helpful. The only fix I can think of is to narrow the panels a bit, leave the reaction shots focusing on the eyes only... I don't really know if this lazy solution works, but it's the best I can come up with while I procrastinate to draw my own already behind schedule webcomic.

are you trolling me? I cant tell. Is this the American sarcasm? Pardon.

I just want my shit to stop looking dA-tier so when I eventually flood people with my gay girls on an actual webcomic site, I'll have a visual vantage point. I want to be able to keep up with art skills of other asians in asian sites. 1st is ayy lmao. I had good looks on 2nd and 3rd, but had chickenscratches. Shat on myself 4th and especially 5th. <- V. Bad quality. Utterly disgusting. 6th is my current hope.

If there's a better word for it, better presentation, I think. Cleaness too. Things have to pop up more to grab more readers. I'm working on making my drawings distinguishable from other people's work. It has to stand out and be very likeable. Pic not related.

Hey, this is what I meant in the last comment.
I think the "laser eyes" don't work in the style of your comic. But I think the version on the right would be the easiest way to put emphasis on her looking at the pants.
I like Left best, which is more similar to your old concept

The blue robe is really boring to look at because there's not enough difference between light and dark. Add some highlights or make the dark parts nearly black.

Put the belt up higher. Right now it's below crotch level, I'd suggest taking it up to the height of the top of her wrist bands at least. It would also be a good idea to have it stand out more from the robe by changing the color..

The hat doesn't feel centered on her head.

the dotted eye lines should have the same spacing as the pupils, i.e. the bottom one is further back than the top one
and dark pink is not the best color for them. i suggest white with black underneath for contrast

also i should have said this forever ago but if she was showing more cuff in the last panel it would be clearer. but at this point you've done more than enough reworking
>>
>>83181076
just design feedback right? because i'd be happy to give you a little anatomy feedback too.
a fox witch is prty cool. i like her tall narrow-brimmed hat, that's a combo you don't see often, and it suits her perky upswept hairstyle.
are you sure you're not gonna get sick of drawing all that jewelry? i guess you could have her get robbed if you do
the purple inner lining of the robe makes its outer layer look a little too dull by comparison, i'd give her belt its own color to separate it out. maybe the same color as her choker. that'd break it up nicely.

here check this out
first as that other anon mentioned, waist is way too low. gotta think about that ribcage.
secondly, the elbows should go down to the ribcage, no lower. you've made a common mistake of the bent arm being longer than the unbent.
but even without the need for the legs to be longer, their shape is a little inconsistent and off. don't copy these redlines exactly because you've gotta put her waist higher and then think of the knee, but basically just don't fall into the trap so many furry artists do of trying to start with a human leg and add. you've gotta start with a fox leg and then make changes, or it won't look balanced or bend properly.
>>83181805
don't listen to anyone who uses buzzwords. not that they're automatically wrong, but they automatically have no perspective.
>>
>>83181720
I'm no connoisseur of manga-style stuff and I don't read a single word of Chinese (assuming that's Chinese), but putting those characters into Google Images or what looked like Weibo's search bar, or googling the name Ratana Satis didn't show me any art that looked notably better on a technical level than what you've showed us here.

>>
>>83181821 I'm confused. Are you also >>83180566 ?

If you can't see how I regress in some comics then AYY lmao. Good job baiting me senpai. My shit are lifeless especially 4th. 5th look like shit. I'm trying to avoid that with 6th. Getting real tired typing this again and again.

So far, I'm not really having much problem. Not like last time where I'm panicking about tones and thickness here. As of now, I'm just working on tweaking my drawings to look distinguishable from other's work and be drawings that are very likeable to people. <-- that sentence is v. important to what I'm working on, but wasn't really in that improv/regres pic.
So far, I'm just that guy with overly designed lesbian hairstyles. I'm looking at women's fashion and accessories (so my girls will be /fa/) and will also be doing tests on tweaking anatomy for stylization even if I have to sacrifice what little anatomy skill I have left. I'm working on distinguishability. That improv/regres pic only shows how I fucked up from trying to change my lines and tones.

and yeah a lot of people try putting the thigh straight down in digitigrade legs, but that just straight up can't work. you'd have your legs way out behind you like a dog's rear end, when what you really want is your knees pointing forward like a cat's rear end. or if you've ever seen a kangaroo standing up.. shit's crazy

My plan isn't to touch the Japanese. That's suicide lol. My plan is to hit on the smaller communities. I'm building a big gallery of /u/ oneshots (No joke, I'll have to get ready no less than 100 pages of /u/ content) that I'll flood on some more minor asian /u/ places. Last thread, I posted about how I came from a country where if you produce something, your people who likes your stuff will get very proud (because muh minority) and it gets spread like wildfire. If I did that there and have advantage (story or art), it'll get passed around to other smaller countries. Like how spanish /u/ comics make it here. Then "leakage" to... ah! Let's just say my plan is kike-ish. I'll do this, because I was able to pull this off before, but not with comics (despite having tons of errors like an anon once said). I flooded a small community with so many things, I was fast in uploading and uploaded by the batch, the wildfire happened, my shit actually went to Chinese places (which intimidated me), then ????????????, it got to bigger places. My stuffs got no less than +50,000 views and I got a monopoly on a certain place until I had to leave. You might think having monopoly on one area will be good especially if you plan to bank on it, let me tell you, it's torture and will be no fun. This time, I'll just do it to gain enough readers/establish. I'm at 20 something pages yet so I'll have plenty time to work on it.

>>83183707
I understand what you mean, but I also want to git gud.

Im off
>>
>>83183628
Having switched from something cintiq-like back to a normal tablet, I can safely say that it's had absolutely no impact on the quality of my art. In fact, I sort of prefer the normal tablet because with the display tablet, my hand would tend to get in the way of seeing what I was drawing.

so i was looking at the main cast of the comic im drawing and if i classify the characters by their ages

>2 of them are 20
>5 of them are around 15-16
>and the last 3 are aruound 13-14

so i was thinking how i can make the last 2 groups look a bit more different on how they look and act

i started looking at cartoon characters that have the same age

and i mean just look at this.Marco Steven, Danny and Morty all have 14 years and all of them look and act extremely different, specially steven, i always tought he was like 10 because he doesn't seem to get a lot of stuff. marco and danny handle things a lot better while morty is spaghetti most of the time

and then there's dipper that guys is 12 but acts like an semi immature adult most of the time

it looks like a lot of people have different approach about how people of this age group look act, so which one would you consider the best for something like my comic that is mainly going to be about adventures in different fantasy settings where there is really not going be any kind of adult character to supervise them most of the time

It would help I think if you had "action lines" in the background as opposed to simple screen-tone gradient

Alright man is this close to what you were talking about? I redlined her proportions so you can see better where I'm coming from. It looks very rough, but keep in mind her fur is factored in too and it adds some weight. Can I be presumptuous and ask you to redline for me? As a final note, I wanted her waist to look elongated, I don't want her having perfect human proportions because she is not human. Thanks for your help anonymous.

well this is better, and I can understand wanting the elongated torso look.. but keep this in mind: right now she can't wipe her own ass. or attend to anything else downstairsy.. so what most people do is give equally elongated arms if they go with a long torso, then they just look like they have gross stubby legs. so really it.. doesn't work having a super long torso. i mean look at it.

Mostly revolves around a dude who recently stopped using his trip but his posting style is obvious to decipher. He's one of those guys who fights back against all criticism and seemingly doesn't want to get better, to the detriment of the threads.

But the threads are a lot better because since he switched to 100% anonymous posting he stopped posting his art, leading to fewer critiques on him leading to him attacking posters less frequently, leading to better threads!

Different anon here.
As it is here, her legs are half her total height, which IS 'human proportions'; giving her an elongated torso and comparatively shorter arms on a human form throws everything out of whack.

>>83188462
If that's what you're aiming for, note that the cats have long bodies and comparatively short arms and legs.

Take a look at Nick from Zootopia - he has an elongated torso (and long arms), but his legs are quite short instead (note also that he has a plantigrade stance).

Basically is a slice of life comic that is about about stories/fiction/books/comics/movies/urban legnds/etc, about how stories help us grow into the people that we are today, helps us understand the world around us better and all that stuff.

what does it take to be successful @ webcomics?
>>
>>83194589
Besides the obvious "be/have a halfway decent writer" and "be/have a halfway decent artist?" The will to whore yourself out like your next meal depended on it.

Most webcomics die in obscurity. The "big" ones are advertised all over creation until they no longer have to advertise it.

I have about 2 chapters and the beginning of the 3rd one written as of now.

I'm currently trying to find a nice artstyle that's quick to draw, since making it the same way I make other oneshot pictures would take way too long and make me loose interest.
>>
>>83195205
yeah that's how it goes, you can't draw the same in your comic as you do for big long care-put-in art.
this is already pretty elaborate though, are you okay with this level? it's satisfactory to the max.

Same boat.

But for your shading, you might wanna consider just giving it the ol' Mignola treatment. Making the areas of black touch the edge of the figure and having it be a nicely defined mass of shadow.

As it is now, it looks fine, but it's a bit busy and non-committal. Like you're trying to balance "deep shadows cast on the figure" with "I drew the nice linework, now look at it" and something's gotta give.

So I'd suggest just having the shadows be a single mass or so and figuring that part out in the pencils. You can spice it up with little lines here and there to hint at shapes, but that's about it. Otherwise you'd be figuring out a whole figure, inking it, then covering half of it so nobody sees. So if you can cast half a figure in shadow and just make it solid black: then you've got a nice figure, nice technique, and it takes half the time.
>>
>>83195550
really, the shadows not-quite-reaching-the-edge only makes sense for something shiny

Dude, your strips are always impossible to understand. I don't know if it's just your broken english's fault, maybe you are trying to translate your native language expressions too literally... but I wonder if these strips ever had any context to begin with. Maybe it's a severe case of Random access humor?
All I know is, unless you are making these bizarre strips for your amusement only, there's something wrong here.

Little practice for the next and final crossover.
This one was really tough compared to any crossover I made before, including Stones of Anarchy. I felt having to balance my style with the original, and keep them easy to recognize was really difficult. I did some fuck ups on the ink that if I decide to colour this will have to be fixed, but I can blame the marker for it, for once.
Anyway, I'll have the rest inked at home, and then I'll decide if I should add colours.

I'm sorry if I came off as rude, but the wobblyness of such a central element, especially the way the hilt doesn't line up with the blade, is throwing off everything else in the image. The long, straight lines of a sword is one of the main reasons they look cool.
>>
>>83213578
Anon, I'm not going to comment on the overall drawing, but I have to say your inking is disgusting. Your lines are wobbly, and the lineweight is awkward and so arbitrary it would be better if you had uniform lines. Look up examples of inking and lineweight.

My hand shakes too much, so I end up fixing a lot of stuff digitally. But I agree that I use a really arbitrary method for inking, that I don't think it will change anytime soon. I try to practice while still doing my thing, and add the stuff that I can manage to grasp.
I don't want to stop doing what I do just to practice, as much as I need it.
>>
>>83214161
>I like it. I tried to do it on my own, but came out as toy-ish
Well, it's a sword inspired by the exaggerated shapes of low-bit CRPG sprites, with the wide tip and all, so having it looking a bit toy-like might be appropriate.

What program do you use do draw? For shaky hands I recommend you use manga studio, and crank brush stabilizing to 15. I think paint tool sai also has this feature, but for comics I like manga studio better.
But anon, if you keep drawing stuff on your confort zone you will never get much better, if you really want to get good, practice is not "just practice" it's not an optional thing you can do to pass time, it's mandatory.

>>
>>83214516
If it does turn out to be west tree, all I can say is please dont.

But if it isnt, please ignore me and go ahead.

>>83214660

>>
>>83214528
For the time being, I'm still drawing on paper, my shaking on digital cranks up to eleven, so it's still not something I'd like to dive in just yet.
As for the comfort zone, I agree with what you say, but improvement is not and end goal for me, I try new things from time to time, people who saw my work when I started to post here knows it changed, but I do that at my own pace, because this is still a hobby for me.
And I'm not brushing this off with my comment, I know how much time I can really put on my drawings, and my objective is getting things done, even if I have to cut some corners.
>>
>>83214660
I'm not Brian Richmond.
>>
>>83214707
Then how would being harsh on it be controversial? Use your head.
>>
>>83214726
My hands shake a fair bit too, but even when I'm inking with a brush it's not something that affects me too badly. Of course I can't speak for everyone, but the most important thing for me is to just be deliberate with my lines and make sure any major shifts in their weights is done by design rather than chance. Helps to draw from the elbow and shoulder rather than the wrist as much as possible - and obviously you're going to get some contours in your lines when inking with a quill or brush - but the biggest step to mitigating these problems is knowing how to use your weights. Practice when to emphasize a shadow, closeness to the viewer, contours of a shape, all that stuff. Make sure to pick the right tool for the job too, if you're working traditionally, but that should be pretty easy.
>>
>>83214721
Well, I know I can't absolutely stop him from doing that, it's really just a personal request because I'm already struggling to get people to read my comic. I don't need some reviewer slandering my name, for a lack of a better term. I would just appreciate it if he would hold off on it, at least until the books have been out for a few months. But still, all I say is please.

But that's not my decision, it's his.
>>83214895
Yeah, I know, but I wasn't using your post to respond to, but just as a starting point to begin my post so people know what I'm talking about.
>>
>>83214956
I have a hard time breaking the habit of drawing from the wrist, it's excruciating.
I'll try drawing from the elbow, but this one is already done so as always, I'll leave that for next time. Your input is really appreciated.

I'm hitting the sack for today, I'll come back later.
>>
>>83215007

Writing an in depth scathing review of it doesn't seem like it would accomplish much; I mean - not to say you're necessarily bad (to be fair, I haven't read your comic.) but it's not like everyone in these threads is calling you a visionary or a genius. So I don't see how reviewing your comic would be controversial.
>>
>>83214950

What if it's praising a comic we think of as bad, and calling everything else shit.
>>
>>83215132
It's easiest to get in the practice of it for long, smooth lines. I'm still pretty awful and draw most short strokes from the wrist myself, but in terms of line quality it doesn't usually seem to make much of a difference on those. Definitely feels like it's worth working on in the long run though.
>>
>>83215147
There are what? 3 or 4 comics that most thread goers like. The Green Knight, Carrion Girls, Miss Melee and The Sisters. Those would be the most controversial to pick one. If we are dealing with non regular posters it opens up to the possibility of people like Harro.

You misunderstand. It's not basic, it's simple.
Anyone can draw like that with enough practice, but the level of detail and composition is impressive. It's far from basic.

>I actually got a C- in a drawing class.
So?

Listen, I didn't apply to art school because I was afraid of what a worthless artist I was. I put all my chips on an English degree...and I failed for a whole year before finally getting my shit together. And after I got my degree, you know what I realized?

It wasn't worth shit!
I still wanted to make comics, and an English degree wasn't going to get me a job I liked. So I got a regular ass job that sucked, and from there I got a really NICE job that actually makes me enough to sustain myself, and now I have a 40 hour work werk and I STILL.

Earthy isn't really getting better over time, but he IS trying to expand. you can see when you look at his older stuff how he moves from 'confident but stagnant' to 'experimental but needs work' over time. he's doin shiz in his own way.
remember when he first started posting in here and blonde girl just had these super heavy eyelids and just overall a look that wasnt working? he was trying something different, and he's moved past that. i think there's nothing wrong with just letting people experiment. i know i wish i'd experimented more.

the physical act of writing is definitely easier than other things, but it still has its challenges

indeed! but I was actually pretty ignorant of RPGs outside of just.. things I saw in other spritecomics. so most of my videogame inspiration at least in the early days was zelda and paper mario. then it was finalfantasy and chronotrigger sprites, and then most of the rest was random anime shit.

You know, the actually pretty good art that you've proven you can draw yet you choose to handicap yourself and limit your comic's success by sticking to the shitty "style" that's in your comic.
>>
>>83220602
specifics, man. i'm gettin' less and less inclined to do you favors but it's fun to do things in other styles once in a while. like that time i drew that guy a pinup of sasha because he asked nicely
http://kairu-hakubi.deviantart.com/art/Sasha-in-heat-330922557
i mean it wasn't very GOOD, but it was fun doing a different style.

d'you wanna see mizu in like, my best impression of toriyama maybe? for appropes? or maybe something looking more like avatar/korra, since for a while i had her in some outfits inspired by all that shit? something more like tenchi perhaps? ranma? funky winkerbean? i can't read your mind
>>
>>83220833
I imagine he's talking about something like this one. I mean, it's your business, but I remember thinking it looked exponentially better than everything else I'd seen from you and being puzzled at why you didn't incorporate stuff like the lineart style and facial anatomy in your comic.

I've been working on completing the universe in the comic I'm doing for years now but now that the universe is done I'm having trouble narrowing down what I want to include in the comic. The setting was originally intended for a tabletop game so I have tons of factions and areas I've put tons of thought into that all have their own sets of secrets and lore, but if I included everything in universe into the comic it would just be a mess. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? How do you narrow down what to include when introducing a huge universe?

Pic related is a rough map of our solar system in universe and what factions and alignments dominate them. Every single one has meticulous background lore, extensive visual designs and politics going on with most of the others. There's a lot going on. It feels like condensing Warhammer 40k into a single comic or something.

oh.. well that was just .. uh.. i'm not sure what that was exactly. it's different when I'm doing fanart of someone else's stuff, because then i'm going to try to represent their style and mix it with my own sensibilities.
maybe if i got around to doing more of that fanart i've been trying to get around to.. particularly Sisters and CitT.. maybe that'll satisfy? the only issue there is the former i've chosen something kinda hard to draw (jam and the dog showering, as mentioned sometime back when connor was a new addition) and the latter i have no goddamn ideas except i know he'd enjoy nudery

also i guess i should draw miss melee's daughter at some point

Cut everything that can be cut. If you can tell the story without it, don't spend time establishing it in the story.

Stuff that can be established in the background without taking time is fine - even if it's not important to the story that, say, Venusians love squid burgers, you can still establish that by having the Venusian character eat squid burgers anytime there's a scene of people eating. Even more overt infodumps can be fine if they serve a non-obvious plot purpose, like controlling the pacing or showing a character trait that will become important - like if a guy spends a few panels discussing the intricacies of Venusian slave trade, that could tell the audience a lot about him.

But first, cut everything.

>It feels like condensing Warhammer 40k into a single comic or something.
This is extremely apt. There's no piece of 40k fiction (or any other tabletop-sized fantasy setting that I know of) that tries to have everything, and for good reason.
>>
>>83221735
It's really only the first three panels that are exactly funny.

Really the whole series is just played straight and just happens to be funny, but when emotional moments do happen, I try to make it feel as natural as I can.
>>
>>83221301
Could you try to redraw >>83220510
in the style of >>83221170 ?

I honestly think you're on to something with that style.
>>
>>83221826
It feels exactly as natural as that scene where Annabeth got cold and Jack had to take him to Angel's house, AKA very unnatural.
>>
>>83221749
I see, I guess my problem is that the story focuses on a group of mercenaries that take up jobs from all factions and find out a lot of the problems they've had to solve are part of a really large scale conspiracy. I've already planned out the final outcome. But with them being mercenaries and all it can really go anywhere until then. I should really minimize things though, I see your point there. I think I'll start by going through and crossing off all the factions that don't need major roles. i appreciate the input.
>>
>>83221906
Well, ok you see, that page was played straight, and then the next page was back to the usual stuff. These characters have pretty strong composures and don't let there emotions take them down for too long and they just go on with life.
>>
>>83222011
That's not good.
>>
>>83221932
Now I'm imagining the mercenary leader having a running gag of the people hiring them trying to exposit at him about the justice of their cause and the vileness of their enemies while the merc is desperately trying to hide how little he cares.

In any case, I know it sucks to cut out those bits (there's a reason they call it killing your darlings), but stories really do grow stronger when you prune them. Good luck with it.
>>
>>83221474
zhey're*
oh that all got solved pretty quickly.
i think rather than 'you know what happens' maybe he should say 'you know how that goes' or something.
i wanna say you meant 'ok' there, not 'on' in panel 4?
certainly*
yourself* one word

that use of blur focus at the end, that's actually kinda neat. but if you're gonna color it hadn't you better finish first and then go back and blur when you're done?
>>
>>83221904
i don't really know what that style is, i was just wingin' it. it'd be completely different for a different person who isnt a skinny roundheaded girl. Like.. Mizu's eyes aren't like that..
I guess I'd have to see Dustin draw her first, see how he draws mature sensible swordswomen, then adapt that. shit that actually sounds like a fun activity, some kind of telephone game of styles
can john k style even HAVE mature sensible people in it? i've never seen that before. the closest is the buxom hillbilly girls he's fond of drawing.
>>
>>83222190
That's kind of the point of the comic, dude. It's that South Park 'don't be a puss' influence. If they sat around angsting for extended periods, it wouldn't fit the tone at all. And you wouldn't be able to joke about heavy shit the way he does. That's the appeal
>>
>>83222352
>That's the appeal
No wonder it doesn't have any fans.
>>
>>83222190
Well, if you remember back in chapter 10 Sweetdream reveals that West Tree Academy is an academy for all sorts of disabled children, so these characters are mentally disturbed in some way and don't react the same way in certian situations you and I would.

>>83222240
Oh yes, You see, that's basically the reason why I didn't use text bubbles, because I accidentally put them in and had to undo them all because I remembered that I still have to color them.
>>
>>83222384

whatever else it is, it's refreshingly different. if there's one sin dewd could not possibly weather being guilty of, it'd be being samey. he'd be totally fuck outta luck.

Another character, then, that's more like the urchin in build; the fairy girl, or the purplish wolf girl.
Just adding a nose, eyes with white parts, and slendering/lengthening the limbs a bit would do wonders for the poseability and expressiveness of your usual style, I think.

I don't get why you have problems drawing Fem!Trunks with that level of detail.
>>
>>83223524
it's safe to say there's something fucked up with me, yeah. but I think most of the confusion here is over taste. Like, there's a lot of stuff Dustin has done with Urchin that's quite different from the direction I'd have gone in. I liked her when her head wasn't a circle and her name was... what was it? something else.
But it's his, yknow? and you can tell from everything he does that he's enjoying the shit out of it because it's up his alley and he's staying in that alley.
>>
>>83223581
well for one thing it takes longer. for another thing, this drawing at full size was the size of an entire strip of the comic. I don't think my computer could even handle if i made the comic's canvas big enough for dozens of drawings this size with backgrounds twenty times larger still. fuck, it's struggling now.
point is, you do comics differently from how you do one-off drawings.
>>
>>83223666
Wh-no.
I mean that's what anon's asking for, so I don't get why you can just dump a sketch like that for one character and then be incapable of doing it with another.
>>
>>83223666
oh
also i'm not actually good enough to do that consistently. Like, you notice how inconsistent faces are in miss melee? and that guy has REAL skill. multiply that by at least five and that's how it'd look if i did entire comics with fully detailed faces and outfits and shit. and that's not even taking into account how it would take weeks to finish one page, so i might even forget what someone looked like by the end because it had been so long since i started.
>>83223727
shit i dunno. i have very little control over what I do. it just kinda happens.
>>
>>83223179
Something like that, yeah. It's got a few nits to pick*, but overall it looks way more expressive/characterful and appealing than your usual stuff.
I really, truly recommend that you try to get this style to work for you. Like, I cannot overstate how big an improvement this is. You're going from just-above-Dewd tier to something that I actually like to look at.

*like the size of her hands and feet, the way her boobs flop around and the cross eyes

>>83223666
Mate, it took you twenty minutes of work max, while you were simultaneously posting here.
And that's with you not having practiced the style at all.

You don't have to make every single character this detailed. Just the ones up front and in focus.
As for the computer, well, you could blow up each panel once you've done the sketch and work on them individually.

>>83223762
I can't speak for anyone else, but inconsistent faces in this style would be vastly preferable to consistent faces that you're doing now.
And you'll get consistency with practice.
>>
>>83224015
He thinks it's a style thing and will tell you as much, even though giving his characters their normal proportions with this level of detail would be an unambiguous improvement.

yeah well the big head and hands and feet werent in the initial sketch, and as I mentioned before, I had to just grit my teeth and do those reluctantly, but anon specifically wanted it to look like what i'd done for urchin, so that's why I did that.

iunno. i definitely need to work on a bigger canvas. but i like the simple style the way it is, and i'm not dumping that. at least not now, this is the last major arc of this comic.

now after that, who knows? I plan to go into studying mode for a while, and I'll probably try my hand at sucking Kazerad's nuts like everyone else, and do a CYOA. For that I'll be doing something a bit more like the style of the 'Oracle' zelda games.

and for the next iteration of kiwi day, however many years down the line, i'm still gonna be cute-ass animu shit without sclerae or frontal noses. that's just the brand now. but it'll be a bigger canvas, more detail on closeups, better emoting.. it'll be better overall. because this time i'm gonna hold back and not start until I'm at least KissxSis tier.

hey we're all working with what we've got, yknow?
amusingly i started doing this because i was worried about LOSING what i had with less free time. turns out drawing in a super simple style doesn't really keep you in practice, and it eats up what free time you DO have..
but it IS lots of fun, and it does mean i can try out a lot of complicated poses, backgrounds, or objects that i would otherwise be too intimidated to draw. then once i've done the simple version, it's a lot easier to do the 'real thing' as it were.
and over time it has been moving in that direction already. Starting out barely 3 heads tall, moving up to almost 6

But I'm not the guy whose going to re-review Dewd's comic. Mostly because I've developed my own bias and I wouldn't want to have that coloring what is already a pretty arduous experience reading his comics.

Mostly went back to re-reviewing the comics I've read because I kind of want to get back to posting reviews again come Monday. I've got a long enough backlog of things people want me to look at; and a lot of them have gotten out a few more chapters since my previous looking. So it isn't as huge a hassle.

>>83214063
Honestly if you're going to massacre the Sisters, I'd appreciate it if you didn't hit us up on perceived politics due to style choices. Because that isn't us, and really puts a lot of assumption on the creators rather than the content. Namely a couple weeks ago some assumed our comic had a self-acceptance tone to it; which frankly I didn't see at all; and it was brought up due to the style.

But if it is us, gut me like a goddamn trout. I've been lacking proper reviews and criticism for a bit now. And I am well aware of style/tone shifts and the fact that there are cohesion issues.

Well for something you did about 14 years ago, back in 2002-2003; it isn't half bad. Like, most people's starting out stuff from 14 years ago is terrible. Yours is by no means great, but there are aspects to it that clearly have thought put into it and for what comes across like middle-school/high-school doodles, you do have consistency when it comes to keeping things "on model."

Like, I wouldn't advise anyone to read your old stuff; but I can respect where you are now with knowledge of where you were nearly a decade and a half ago. And the commentary you put does on occasion help give an idea as to why you make certain choices.

I think the key here is that there's certainly a level of humility here on your end, which makes it all tolerable.

If it sounds contradictory, it is because it is super hot out and my brain is melting; but take it as a positive note.

I have thoughts on your past work now is a matter of seeing how it goes with your new work.

i think he's eyedropping from my art though. which decidedly doesn't have the best colors. That's partly vision problems i used to have, partly monitor calibration issues, a little bit style, and a little bit laziness (kaen's outfits have always been straight out of the photoshop default color swatches because i didnt wanna make new swatches)
i actually kinda feel bad for making everyone so pale. it wasn't intentional. robin's supposed to be noticeably paler than the others, and kimchi and kaen slightly more olive toned
actually looks like he might be using his own eyes, i'm spotting a few color differences. PURELY as an exercise in examining my own shit harder, not autistically nitpicking fanart

Of this, I agree. I guess what I was trying to get across is that people assumed, due to the style we use for our comic that we are are part of some political narrative which would make them not like to read said comic. And that is what bothers me.

By all means, don't read our comic if you don't like how it looks. But to say "I'm not going to read it because I assume this is the politics of the creators" is kind of a shame. It'd be like if nobody watched the Captain America films because "he represents America, and America represents all this stuff I dislike."

I totally understand that if I put out something, which out of context, seems to define the entirety of my work; people have every right to judge my work by that. I hold issue when this judgment is made when there is nothing beyond style itself to create that definition for people.

And even then I'd be fine if people didn't read it. Some people don't like the style. It's like when someone doesn't like manga for its stylistic tropes. It is perfectly fine to dislike that because of that. It is a little more troubling when you say "this style is in support of the people who did the rape of Nanjing." Because that makes assumption on the content due to assumptions on the creator.

So by all means, dislike The Sisters; or choose not to read it. But if you choose not to read it, choose not to because you dislike the style, or the story, or me or the artist; not because you dislike what you perceive to be our political/ideological leanings.

If that made any sense.

UM, i finished a new page? ...i guess? guess this is a pre transitional page to the transitional map travel page right before the next chapter starts....

yeah... i wasn't expecting the chapter to be over so soon, but im doing this all freestyle with no real script, just a list of ideas i want to happen

next chapter im going to write a script, i know i say that all the time but this time im serious, normally i just do story boards but this time im going to do the script, then the story boards, then the actual pages!

its going to be great!

um.... yeah guess its back to working on demon juice, but first i want to draw new character models and sheets, and art, and do a bunch of fan art for people to!

How do I stop myself from thinking "I need to get better first"?
I really, really want to start, but I feel like my script isn't good enough, my character designs could be better and my drawing and composition skills are kinda shitty. >>83238264
You figure that you'll get better with on-the-job practice and that you can go back and fix what's shitty early on when you've established what needs to be established for the story and maybe picked up some readers. Don't worry so much about inconsistency as long as there's improvement, in my experience it's rare someone abandons a decent looking webcomic based on early pages being shitty, they just expect a quality increase as it goes. What's important is getting it made.

Once I put out the pages I really don't want to change too much to be honest.

>Don't worry so much about inconsistency
Do you mean in art or story? Because the latter would be really bad. For everyone.

>it's rare someone abandons a decent looking webcomic based on early pages being shitty
Might be true, but my main issue is not that my first pages will probably look shitty compared to later ones, but that once I decide for a design or script/ storyboard I can't just change it later on. I guess I just have commitment issues. Thanks for your input!

>>83238876
>maybe post some of your stuff here
desu I did that a few months ago when the idea was brand new. In the meantime I had a lot of rl issues, so I stopped working on the comic. Pic related is a recent sketch.
It really bothers me that I haven't even chosen consistent designs for my characters yet.

> i keep redrawing the first pages every time i learn something new
I think it's better to embrace ones mistakes and move on. Re-doing everything when you learn something new will hold you back a lot.

>I'm sure that my character designs are good because i posted them here, and anons liked them
Glad to hear that. But, to be honest, I personally wouldn't let that be my only source of determining if my character designs are successful. imo the most important thing should be that you, the creator, like it.
>>
>>83239793
I feel that. I guess all I can recommend is to keep it simple, especially if this is your first project, and especially since it's a newer idea. Your art's definitely appealing enough to get readers interested (though I will question those Square-Enixy dual belts).
>>
>>83236254
I really don't know why people are hating on your style. It fits you well and looks good. The problem are your colors to be honest - you should definitely read into color theory.

>>83225903
I remember reading your first chapter and liking it a lot. Your recent pages seem to be more comedy oriented strips instead of an ongoing chapter? Is there a reasoning behind that? (Not that I mind.)

>>83216027
Well, everyone can write, just like everyone can draw. The hard thing is to do it well. Personally I think drawing is the easier craft to get decent at. Unlike writing you need a lot less preperation (reading hundreds of books), talent and, most importantly, it's easier to practice, since you can approach it topic after topic. There are also a lot of very good instructional artbooks on perspective, construction and so on. It's just motorical skill, three dimensional thinking and problem solving.

I think most people who think they will never be able to draw well just lack the right ressources.

>>83215303
I love all your pages so far! Only point of critique: Since you have a lot of detail and don't use varying line weights, the panels feel a bit clustered. An idea would be to either use colored outlines for backgrounds, so the characters stick out more, or use contrasting colors (be it in hue or saturation)

>>83214063
You sound like a self absorbed cunt that obviously does reviews neither to inform potential readers, nor to promote the comic, nor to help the comic creator figuering out what to do better, but simply to bash their work.

Whoops, I forgot to draw her sword in that sketch. Having an additional belt for your weapon seemed useful desu.

> keep it simple, especially if this is your first project
It's actually harder to keep it simple. The story grew very large and my attempts to tone it down resulted in a worse story. Also a friend helped me with world building and we kinda have a pretty huge chunk of background information for a lot of stuff (world, society, technology, religion, flora & fauna, etc.) already. The bigger it gets, the more intimidating it becomes, but just scrapping stuff thats actually good seems to be a bad idea.

>since it's a newer idea
Yeah, not anymore. I came up with it last November or so, so it's been almost half a year. Ironically I wanted to get started last January but my tablet stopped working and I had so much other stuff to do, so idk.

Thanks for your advice.

>Your recent pages seem to be more comedy oriented strips instead of an ongoing chapter? Is there a reasoning behind that?
I had some issues I wanted to work out with chapter 2's script but I didn't want to stop updating completely while I worked on them. I found myself going "I literally don't know what is going to happen on the next page" a lot during chapter 1, which ended up giving me a few weird pacing issues and made a lot of the pages worse than they needed to be because I rushed their conceptual stages, so I wanted to spend some time really nailing down chapter 2's page layouts and flow before I had to deal with deadlines.

>>83240182
>Having an additional belt for your weapon seemed useful desu.
It's not strictly necessary. Wearing a sword belt in addition to or instead of your regular belt was done in some place, while in others, scabbards were designed to be tied to or slipped on to your regular belt. Try looking up a bunch of sword belts and seeing if one of them inspires you.

For a sword that's carried parallel to the ground on your back, I think hanging it like pic related from your regular belt would be what I'd go with.

>but just scrapping stuff thats actually good seems to be a bad idea.
I don't know your story, obviously, and I'd be lying if I was some expert of writing, but this remark is setting off all sorts of alarm bells. Not cutting out the "cool" stuff that doesn't actually contribute to the core story is one of the classical mistakes of newbie storytellers. Things shouldn't just be "good" in a vacuum, they should be good in the context of supporting the story you're trying to tell.

Kinda? I'm not very good at writing scripts and I'm not very good at sticking to them.

Like, I had the general idea of what was gonna happen (first they go here, then they get attacked by a ghost, then they go and trick the berserks, etc) and where I wanted the story to go, but my ideas for the pages weren't very descriptive and a lot of it just plain didn't work when I tried to put it on a page. Like, here's the script I had for the last five pages (ended up being seven).

>p 58 "oh hey he actually IS a berserk." "pff, my Dad berserked better than that in his sleep"

>p 59 "oh hey, I think it's over" Asbiorn doesn't get back up. Toki stares at the cross he had around his neck (which is burning his hand).

>p 60 Toki walks back to his tomb "hey wait dude he's not dead"

>p 61 Toki opens up the tomb, effortlessly lifting the great stone slab, and gingerly places the cross inside

>p 62 The two valkyries mount up and fly off while talking about how christians really are a bunch of faggots.

If you bother reading the final version of pgs 58-65, you'll notice there's a ton of differences.
For chapter two I'm trying to sketch things out way better in advance.

> I just have commitment issues
Sort of on the same boat here. What I recommend since it's what I've been doing for the past 8 months, is to just make short comics. Like really short stories, no longer than say 15 pages. Working in small iterations helps you improve a lot, while at the same time you're actually producing real content that people can enjoy.

Another thing that helps a lot is to make those things for something or someone else. At the moment I'm trying to get into small comic anthologies and the deadlines really help me get stuff done. And since it's something you'd have a set date where it "releases", you've be free to move on to the next little project as soon as you submit it.

Of course, this is what works for me until I feel confident enough to commit on something more long-term. You'd have to figure out what works for you.

>>83246150
