First issues that are double sized always seem to throw of story times just a bit.

This from a really special period of DC comics I like to refer to as "proto-Vertigo".

Titles like:

Oh shit, expand on that please. I was referring to the stuff DC put out in the late 80's with the "Recommended for Mature Readers" label, before Vertigo was even a thing. Is that term already in widespread use in regards to a different crop of titles?

Proto Vertigo is the name given to all the titles that were later branded with the Vertigo name when collections came out.

A lot of the positive associations and connections people draw to Vertigo are through books that were inspirations on Vertigo that were later spun into it.

I loved this series, but it went to shit in the last 30 issues.
