The only reason I watched season 4 was for closure. I hoped it would be better than season 3, but it was actually worse.

Laurel literally had the world constantly shit on her. Sister and boyfriend die while cheating on her, mom abandons her, dad drinks. Has to work through that. Season 2, depression hits, gets into drugs and alcohol, everyone tells her to fix up instead of actually giving her any support. Gets gas lighted by the villain and no one believes her. And even at her worst, she was still compassionate. She was there for Oliver even when she was mad at him because she loved him and his family.

No, that show is a guilty pleasure of mine and some of the characters are really likable (Monty, Jasper, Raven, and Bellamy mainly), but the writing is pretty bad and characters themselves are wildly inconsistent in their motivations and actions. When you get down to it, the show just OOZES of writers who think they know better than comic writers, and it's just funny as hell to see them get proven wrong again and again. It's not even a matter of "oh we just don't have the time to read" or "comics aren't a high priority" -- it's becoming obvious that there's this mentality of "the comics are...a bit insular and silly, and WE of course are so much better and broad. there's no point in even reading them."

It's such a limiting and silly way to do things, especially since 1) the comics are the reason this is getting made and 2) the comics are a treasure trove of storylines and characterizations and ideas in general. Simply having those concepts in your mind is going to result in better writing than trying to characterize a bunch of people at the same time from base one.

To put it one way, it'd be like writing The Iliad but refusing to listen older stories about literally every participant of the Trojan War.

Some instant fixes that wouldn't change much characterization:
* ACTUALLY WRITE THE GODDAMN FIGHT SCENES. Arrow's fight scenes have been lowpoints throughout this season, and it's clear the writers just say "...and now the team fights the goons. Punch. Lots of kicks. And the team is victorious."

* Take the 24 route, and plot out the season in smaller arcs that *eventually* lead to the big bad, rather than having the bad guy brood evilly for 23 episodes.

* With above, make flashbacks tie into the episode more. A simple way, without changing anything in the show -- MORE flashbacks, less present-time stuff. I know, I know, it doesn't make sense, but it's much better than having the flashbacks be these small, jarring detours.

* Destroy the Arrowcave. For good. No replacements or anything like that. The team has to actually meet in and hang around Star City.

* Limit Felicity's computer usage by a large amount. She can use it to set things up, but she's no longer the unstoppable "i can brush the president's teeth with my hacking!" piece of crap that she was before. Any and every hideout/lair this season will have no technology at all.

Character-based writing solutions:

* Develop Star City more. As a living breathing city itself, it should have an actual identity. We rarely see any small, particular bits of it, and I think it's because every other fucking DCCW show is in Vancouver now. This, mind you, is something that The Flash has also struggled with this season.

* Develop Star City CITIZENS more. The show shouldn't just revolve around the heroes and their villains. The stakes don't matter at all if the people within these cities are unseen and unheard 99% of the time. Anywhere from a quarter to a half of every season should feature case-of-the-weeks about citizens.

* No more character drama resulting from lies. Period. If that's impossible, go the Jane The Virgin route and have people rationally react to lies.
