Look at scooby doo for an example of inspired character design.

All the characters look unique and their appearance reflect their personalities (Velma-Glasses-perceptive/smart: Fred-athletic-cleancut-leader etc..) They're simple, but effective. The physical aspects of the characters serve a purpose. There's a reason why these characters are so enduring.

What purpose do those gauntlets serve to tell you about the character? Or the chain? Or the popped collar? or the pant leg? Nothing whatsoever except that he's suppose to be 'cool'. It's just bad character design. It would still be bad even in the animation was amazing.

The gauntlets are because he's a fighter. Who uses a polearm. And if you've even used so much as a fucking rake, you'd know that stuff like that is pretty rough on the hands.

As for the rest of his outfit, his appearance of someone who just threw on what happened to be lying around fits his character as someone who gives zero fucks about how he's percieved to others.

The tail is because he's based on Sun Wukong so much that it's his fucking name.

There are a lot of characters in RWBY to sperg out over the design choices the creator's made but Sun really isn't one of them.

It's bad character design through and through. Even if that's better than other examples, it doesn't make it good. It's deviantart-esque. Westerns aping on anime without having the dedication to draw 12 hours a day like the pros in Japan who made the stuff they were inspired by.

There's very little thought that went into to these designs beyond the superficial.

Animation ranges from decent to absolutely god awful, this is because the show doesn't have a consistent rule or art bible and artists can take some liberties. Sometimes it works but other times it doesn't at all since some of the artists can't draw for shit and it really fucking shows.

Pretty much one of my gripes with the way RT does things, that's actually one of the few things I agree with Shane on. RT hired people who were learning how to use the animation program while animating the series, that's why some scenes look horrible, he'd even argue how certain animators could have done a better job during specific scenes.

I'm not one of those meh Monty vision fags but aside from Shane complaining about his petty life issues he did make some good points.

Non of that should matter though since the shows visually quality is getting better over time, RWBY an their writers on the other hand... is still pretty shit honestly

I just like RWBY, even in spite of it's earlier failings. It just has a lot that appeals to me.

The improvements that started with Volume 3 (and will almost certainly continue) are welcome news.

One of my biggest issues with RWBY's animations is that everything looks so weightless, even in the fights. It's like in Oblivion where all the ragdolls fell like sacks of feathers. They slide across scenes instead of looking like they're actually running across them, and even when there IS a punch, all the weight is equal. Nothing stretches or scrunches.

The other big issue is that there's so little human movement. They look very static, and there's almost nothing in the way of the small details that make them look like living characters, which is something >>83171604 demonstrates makes a vital difference. Expressions are blank unless they need to move, which they do mechanically. You don't see people settle their limbs unevenly with different weight speeds, or make a small flourish or movement. Almost every character moves the same way when walking and running, or standing still.

It comes across like something that is rushed out the gate, created by unskilled animators, or both. And it's a pity, because it could be really fun if, even if everything else was the same, the animation was better. A show with lots of fight scenes and a focus on characters that doesn't animate those fights or characters well? It just feels like such a shame.

Beast Machines didn't fare too well either. I like how it tried to hide the CGI's shortcomings by keeping the models simple, relying on textures for detail (they even had painted-on highlights) and playing with the lighting. But most of the animation is stiff as hell and half the effects look shit. Character designs and the direction were all over the place, too.

Well, that's the thing, the first two volumes were exactly that: Made by unskilled animators and had a problem with being rushed.

Monty had everyone using Poser because he was the best animator, and he was best with Poser, so everyone had to adapt to accommodate. Now that he's gone, everyone else can switch to Maya, which they are best with, and the quality will improve drastically as a result.

To be fair that bit of animation is for a movie which generally have longer development time and shorter running time than a series. Of course the quality of the animation is better, each frame and movement has to be important and they have the time and money to get it right. It's sad, but you're not wrong. At the end of the day, the kickass fight scenes can't carry a show that doesn't put 100% focus on them. And yeah, Volume 3 is the best part of the series so far, by a wide margin.

And yeah, I read somewhere that Monty left enough notes behind for them to get all the way past Volume fucking 20; Maybe more depending on how they play their cards. Even had designs for older looking characters. Can't quite remember my source on that, though, but another one says a minimum of Volume 5 is planned out, so there's that.

Take this scene for example, if it were done with a realistic or detailed mug, it would probably take several more days worth of effort to animate properly.
As it is, simple, the face conveys enough information for the viewer to understand and sympathize with character's emotions at that moment.

I've always thought the characters designs were waifu material but the reason I have never watched the show is because the animation looks so terrible. I'm not an animator but even I have heard of the basics of animation. These movements have to weight, no anticipation, no follow through. When they hit each other you don't feel any impact, the camera shakes so it seems harder but it doesn't. I can't believe some consider this good animation.

The thing is, Poser is basically just that; a program to make cool (or at least believeable) poses. It's not optimized for anything else,. You can't really get into fiddling and adapting geometry or rigs to the charscter's needs that much, you just have your average human skeleton that you project characters onto. You sequence animations, but you can't really interpolate or compensate motion to make it more believeable or natural.

They have one folder per character because they absolutely have to. If a character doesn't have specific animation files, it can't do anything. Say, if every character in your scene has to walk, you need to have a walk cycle file for each.

I'm glad they're finally going to Maya.

It's the part of his letter that pisses me the most. If there's something I can give RT credit is that they at least TRY to improve the way they handle things. You can say anything on writing, but you can deny the big steps they have done from the old RvB days, having improvement when it comes to editing and post-production a fuck ton.

Even with RWBY they did small but still good steps after Vol 1. they listened to feedback and cerated actual NPC models, they toned down the super brightness, released episodes in a formant that wasn't batshit stupid like Vol 1's and in Vol 3 you can tell production wise is way more elavorate.

If it was to Shane, they'd still be using those horrible cardboard cutout people for crows because "that's what Monty used"

This must be a joke. Even if the writing is near consistently great, the animation is generic and stuff in my opinion. Almost all humanoids share very similar body types, the expressions are similar to every other show out today and the crude but strangely charming sketchiness of the Doc and Mharti shorts are replaced by overly clean digital linework. The only things saving the animation quality are comparisons to the animation quality of other "adult" cartoons, the decency of the actual animation themselves and some of the more creative alien designs.
