How did he find Veidt's secret island?

He was doing reconnaissance for the CIA. They had suspected the island was harboring nukes. At least, that's what I remember from his Before Watchmen issue.

How does the news stand guy read Couldent connect sexualy (or whatever that line was) and immediately come to the conclusion he is a homosexual.

My other question why did the guards react the way they did to the hot oil he was just defending himself there he did nothing wrong.
