Title. My buddy claims that spiderman is the superman of marvel, most purest heart more pure than cpt, always does the right thing and canonically is the spirit of hope for marvel. Is he talking up his ass?

I disagree with your friend, I think Cap is closer to the pure of heart/spirit of hope analogue.

No idea, but what issue is this from?

I agree with this. He didn't exactly provide any examples to why spiderman would be close to the spirit of hope besides "he always does that right thing."

Actually, Spider-man is secret love child between batman and superman.

>Brown hair (Martha)
>Born to be Smart
>Didn't die from the spider-bite.
>He didn't see his parents.

YOU GET IT NOW? Superman and Batman fuck one night and Batman gave birth to Peter Parker.
>>
Cap, Spidey and Thor have all played the Superman role in the setting at one point or another.

Spider-Man is representative of a certain concept of Marvel's identity as a company (heroes who have problems normal people can relate to)

It's arguably that identity has changed, though. For one thing it's obvious enough an idea that fucking everybody uses it now, and right now Marvel's focus seems to be more in big splashy cross-universe crazy crap or quirky inclusive low impact cotton candy to appeal to internet weirdos.

I don't really know how Superman is really emblematic of DC as a other than the fact that he's really old and isn't handled with particular care by WB
>>
>>82980364
Yes, except Spiderman tends to hide it under a smart-alec persona most of the time. When it comes down to it, Peter's the one you see making the dramatic last stands the most often, battered and bruised, talking about the will to do the right thing, power and responsibility.

Let me put it this way: when they did the Civil War event, they chose Spider-Man to be the heart in conflict with itself at the core of the story and the initiative.

That should tell you all you need to know about who the soul of the Marvel universe is.

Now, that doesn't mean every author TREATS his character that way in modern-day times, but it's what he *should* be and what he usually is.

Damn, that actually reminds me of that time he is fighting vs green goblin or some shit near his house and all his villians are coming to kill him because they know his address and he is just standing there beaten to a pulp and won't give up and keeps quipping like nothing is wrong despite being near death.

spider-man is the spider-man of marvel. the two really aren't comparable in a meaningful way. Superman's whole thing is about how he can do anything and chooses to do good. Spider-Man's whole thing is about how he's never good enough, but refuses to stay down.

he's definitely not pure, he's a time bomb of murderous rage and suicidal behavior. He can't even lift Mjolnir. There's two separate timelines where he ends up a horseman of the apocalypse. There's dozens where he decides 'fuck it' and starts murdering villains left and right. Even in the main universe he's willing to torture and brutalize people for the sake of revenge
>>
>>82980885
Okay, where is this from? I need to read this and need to read anything what lead to be spidey like that. I love when he doin things like in after Ciwil war he beated crap out of Kingpin

There's an early issue of Spider-Man where he is called Super-Man, and that's about it. Biggest thing to keep in mind, Spider-Man had Back in Black. Superman had What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?

Bad writers, by which I mean writer, by which I mean Slott, have made Peter pretty impure of heart recently to make their favorite characteroctopus look better.

Plus, One More Day was a shitty story, voted repeatedly on various polls by comic sites to be the worst comic ever written, had Peter sell his marriage and the soul of his unborn daughter to a demon save his elderly Aunt from a bullet wound that somehow the world super scientists couldn't fix.

But yeah, otherwise Spider-man is the youthful good shoulder angel of almost every Marvel character.

Probably projecting on my part, but I think of Spider-Man as a guy who has tremendous potential, and does his very best, but falls short of his own expectations of himself pretty much constantly. He tries to satisfy all the obligations he takes on - helping Aunt May, doing well in school, doing right by his pals, banging hot babes, doing science shit, fighting crime, etc. It's impossible to do all of that at once, so he fails, and he hates himself for it. But he keeps trying.
And like all smart people who hate themselves, he uses humor as a coping mechanism to deflect any kind of genuine emotional self-assessment.

More projecting, but Peter seems ADHD as fuck. When he actually applies himself, he's one of the upper-middle super-geniuses in the Marvel setting. His precognition and super-strength and agility make him one of the better fighters, but he doesn't really train. He tries to do too many things at once, doesn't focus on any one thing, and so he never really rises above the tier of punching the Vulture and shit.

It's sort of true. Multiple times Spiderman has been caled the "moral center" for multiple super teams. From strange to Madame Web, multiple seers have basically treated him as the moral load-bearing weight of the Marvel universe. "You are the best of us" has in fact been a sentence directed to Spidey.

Also, like Superman, he's mostly just this decent dude who turned out to have great powers, and all he wants to do with them is help people.

It's really my major issue with that run. How everyone seem to not give a shit at how not Peter he is. Seriously Spidey worked with every fucking hero in the universe yet A. No one see to give a fuck May got shot and B. No one seem to be concern at Peter acting funny. How do you fuck up that royally?
>>
>>82980364
Spider-Man has been so pissed off that he's ripped people's faces off before. He's beaten people to death with a van. It's hard to imagine Superman doing either of those things.

Not bashing Parker, I love my friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but he's not that paragon of virtue that Superman is supposed to be. Superman, for example, makes his daily living by writing news stories for the Daily Planet. Spider-Man, by contrast, makes his living by scamming the Daily Bugle into buying pictures he took of himself. He's a much more human and fallible character.

There have been instances of other characters talking about how every superhero looks up to Spider-Man in a similar way to how most every hero in DC looks up to Superman, and Spider-Man does have that "you don't know how lucky you are that he's such a nice person" when he could easily splatter the average mugger all over the alley with a single punch but I'd say Captain America is more of the moral compass of Marvel. Cap is the one who cannot compromise his morals, the one who's never wrong, the one who instantly inspires total strangers to stand up for themselves.
