Did none of these people even watch the video? The guy made a perfectly valid point: Ghostbusters is one of his favorite movies of all time. The new one, judging by what's available, looks like a hunk of shit and a cynical cash grab treading on an old name to try and real people in while doing nothing to respect the original movies the way Star Trek or Star Wars did by at least including the old actors to pass the torch.

He literally said nothing about about women aside from the fact that calling it Ghostbusters with no subtitle means that you have to qualify it as the female Ghostbusters or the old one was the male Ghostbusters to differentiate them.

This isn't bad because of "muh womyn" or any other shitposting; I'm hesitant to accept it because it's just a reboot designed to appeal to nostalgia. I never really "grew-up" with it enough to be influenced by the goggles, but I feel like the original Ghostbusters was popular because of how original of an idea it was, the blend of sci-fi and campy ghost lore really was nice in retrospect. Now it's just supposed to be popular because it's Ghostbusters. It's safem and I know the whole "womyn" shit is a complete non-issue; it's going to be inoffensive as fuck.

People like to blame this "everything is a reboot now" trend on executives who are scared to take risks, but I think it's actually just as much the doing of "fandom culture," which I'm beginning to see as an extreme plague to all creativity. People obsess over shit so much and define themselves by "what they like," that they don't feel a *need* to go out of their comfort bubbles that have been inflating for decades. This "franchise" obsession is also the root of "not muh" bitching (very relevant for Ghostbusters especially,) because people have too much of a fixation on the original and what it means for the "franchise." It just becomes a shitshow from all angles because not only are we reinforcing the notion that franchises matter more than content, we're now seeing the scrutinization of reboots (which are perhaps one of the only ways to expand the "franchise") as an affront to creativity only because people care exclusively about certain things they're reluctant to move on from.

You'd almost think the only solution would be for nothing new to be made at all.

AVGN and James as James have provided me with much content over the years. I dislike movies as a whole, and I'm not a gamer (though obviously I played much of retro games way back then). I watch his AVGN videos and his movie related stuff because I can tell he LOVES both. I can feel his emotions within his words and how passionate and honest he is about it all. And I stress that I give no fucks for movies or live action. The man is a legend and he deserves that status. He's enjoyable to watch, funny and nowhere near the current clusterfuck of reviewers and gamers that plague the Netz and which disgust me.

His refusal to watch the new Ghostbusters is a simple and effective refusal of a man who has his tastes, his opinions and metric fuckloads of information about the cinema as such. You cannot attack his position, only respect it. To accuse him of soggy knees and similar feminist drivel is not only to miss the point completely, but to insult him. Yes, this is a direct insult to James. The "people" who are "outraged" over his legitimate statements and given reasons probably know fuck all about the cinema and were never fans of the Ghostbusters as he is.

I can't wait for the movie to come out. The Rotten Tomatoes aggregation will show a clear split between people who actually give a damn about movies and people who use the creative endeavours of others to justify their own beliefs without contributing anything of their own into the greater scheme.

Which is to say, there will be an obvious divide between people who hate the new movie and people who only like the new movie because they would seem sexist otherwise. Like, seriously, even Anita and Zoe hated the anti-Gamergate episode of L&O:SVU. It's okay to not like things that are targeted towards your demographic.

I don't think it's the fact that James didn't want to see Ghostbusters that's making him a target, it's the fact that he sees every other remake and cash-in sequel and usually enjoys them, and suddenly he just happens to be drawing the line with the one that has women. Ghostbusters wasn't a hit because of the ghostbusting, the plot or the story. It was a hit because of the comedians involved and the entertaining dialogue. The problem is that such a critique doesn't really apply to Hollywood movies and their trailers. Trailers are notorious for giving away way, way too much of the movie, and trailers for comedies are notorious for using the best jokes in the movie.

Nevermind the Hollywood trend for cash-grab remakes, seeking to make as much money as possible on opening weekend before bad word of mouth kills it.

So looking at the new Ghostbusters trailer and saying it doesn't look funny, that it looks like a bald cash-grab, is far from an uniformed opinion.

We wouldn't even be having this conversation if the subject hadn't be polluted by feminism. If it was just another remake like the crappy Poltergeist remake, or the crappy Robocop remake, or the crappy Total Recall remake, or Karate Kid, or Day the Earth Stood Still, or Authur, or Godzilla (the Broderick one, at least), nobody would give a second thought to the trailer being rightfully critiqued.
