>Dan Shive is going to strawman AVGN for not wanting to see the shitty new Ghostbusters movie
>is going to strawman everyone for thinking the movie looks like shit despite the trailers being unfunny and looking like shit
Oh boy. First Patton Oswalt, now this. How long til Willis has a strip in DoA about this? Or those Critical Miss guys strawman AVGN? This is going to be huge.
>>
>>82962015
Dan actually seems to be the kind of guy that will admit that the movie is shit when he actually whatch it.
>>
>>82962061
>implying
He'd call it amazing just to save the patriarchy from taking over cinema.
>>
>Ghost busters without Bill murray playing Dr.Venkman
What's the point?
>>
>>82962015
Why is everyone freaking out over the angry nerd anyway? He said nothing that bad. He didnt even say anything about the ghostbusters being female.
>>
>>82962403
He said that it looks bad and it wasn't funny. Which he is right. Trailers are generally supposed to contain the better examples of a movie to make it seem worth watching.
However the trailer had no funny moments in it
>ANGRY BLACK WOMAN POWER COMPELS YOU!
or were just painful to watch.
It showed that it's not a sequel, which is fine. But it doesn't really seem to have the same appeal as the first movie cast. I don't think you really need Bill Murray, but all the characters seem to play an awkward woman except for the loud black lady.

He even did a follow up video about how Ghostbusters 3 spent decades trying to get made. His end message was that if you look at the Transformers series, everyone hates the movies. They are shit. But they keep getting money because people want to see it. If we really want to send a message to studios, people should avoid bad movies.
>>
>>82962884
Loud Black Woman was the only funny part of the second trailer, at least

Are the El Goonish Shive cast all still virgins?
>>
>>82962015
Did none of these people even watch the video? The guy made a perfectly valid point: Ghostbusters is one of his favorite movies of all time. The new one, judging by what's available, looks like a hunk of shit and a cynical cash grab treading on an old name to try and real people in while doing nothing to respect the original movies the way Star Trek or Star Wars did by at least including the old actors to pass the torch.

He literally said nothing about about women aside from the fact that calling it Ghostbusters with no subtitle means that you have to qualify it as the female Ghostbusters or the old one was the male Ghostbusters to differentiate them.

This is the dumbest outrage I've seen since Shirtgate. At least that black guy from Mizzou faked a poop swastika.
>>
>>82963098
I doubt that half of them are.

Actually, I think that it was confirmed that Grace often waked up naked on Teds bed with them sleeping together. Take that as you want.

Susan is a little smug but still best girl
>>
>>82962403
The video is literally NOT MUH GHOSTBUSTERS. I don't care if he likes it or not, but acting like the world is pulling your arm to the theater like a mother would to a screaming child just reeks of manchild entitlement.
>>
>>82962403
Nobody who's bitching watched the video. Part of the PR of the movie is using the "if you don't like it you're a misogynist" card because the movie looks like (and almost certainly is) shit. They're trying to pre-emptively cry misogyny to head off any criticism so you have """"news"""" websites like the Dailydot going with it (likely due to general bribery from Sony) and which then means every virtue signally retard has to take up the cause. The worst part is people believe it too.

I've had conversations IRL with people regarding this and even when I explain what's going on they just say he's just trying to cover up his misogyny. The well of discourse has been completely poisoned.
>>
>>82962884
>But it doesn't really seem to have the same appeal as the first movie cast.
Someone on /pol/ of all places put it best, essentially saying that Ghostbusters was made because Dan Aykroyd has an interest in the paranormal and it's a bunch of guys with good chemistry who made a movie that they wanted to make. Whereas this movie was something shit onto a plate by a studio executive and then presented to people despite the fact nobody wanted it. Even one of the stars of the fucking movie said the trailer looked like shit.
>>
>>82963296
But he DIDN'T. He specifically said "I don't think it looks good, so I'm not going to see it. If you don't think it looks good, then you shouldn't see it either." He's explicitly talking about how not watching or talking about the movie is an option. He only talked about it because his fans were nagging him about it.
>>
>>82962145
>What's the point?

Money. The answer is money
>>
>>82963306
Uh huh. I bet you also believe Disney is bribing critics for bad Batman v Superman reviews too.
>>
>>82963392
Yeah, it's honestly valid. People bitch about how bad something looks, then go and pay money to watch it so they can talk about how bad it is. At that point, who cares? You've given them your money so they win. Same shit happens with Marvel's comics where they intentionally set out to piss people off under the belief that angry people will pay to read a comic so they can be angry about it even more and talk about it.

So what he's proposing is the correct course of action: do not pay to see it. Do not give the movie studio your money. Do not talk about it, do not give it attention. Ignore it and let it fail. I'll add that if you absolutely want to see something because you think that'll allow you to make a better critique, then pirate it. I read the storytimes for books I liked such as Superior Foes, The Fix or Ant-Man but I do that because I like talking with the people who read it and Lieber, it's fun. But I still go and buy the books.

I'm not going to actually pay to read Civil War II or the garbage that is the current line of X-Men books so I'll read storytimes and that's it, I'm not giving Marvel my money for that shit. Marvel shouldn't be rewarded for putting out bad comics, Sony and WB shouldn't be rewarded for putting out bad movies. No matter how much you go "HURR DURR IT SUCKS", if you paid to see it then at the end of the day you're the sucker.
>>

I'll see it, but I'll only give them 6 bucks

Can someone explain to me why James is getting shat on for calmly telling his fans why they shouldn't expect a review?

Seriously at best there should have only been some minor bitching in the comments for James to watch it anyway just to rage and from people who honestly wanted him to give the movie a shot. Not some fucked up lynching from twitter and "news" sites
>>
So my question is that is comicbookgirl19 sexist now too?
she said she was not planning to see the movie either and even said she would recommend her fans not go either, and she did this before James Rolfe the AVGN
>>
>>82963951
Because they're afraid he's right
>>
>>82963951
A lot of the people jumping down his throat haven't seen the video and assume it's about him hating female comedians instead of any of the other things he said.
>>
>>82963951
James was asked by his fans what he thought about the trailer and if he was planning to review the film.
He created the video in response to his fans, and wanted to address the fans properly.

His mass amount of fans started sharing the video and social media, specifically twitter, tumblr, and others took over, and here we are

The amount of nonsense related to this movie is insane. I can't wait until it's confirmed that the movie is mediocre to the point of absolute irrelevance and both sides look the asshole.

Getting up in arms about people's reaction to a fucking trailer is insane. Do people seriously think you can only have an opinion about something if you decide to pay them? If the trailer didn't sell you on it, don't feel obligated to watch it. That simple.

I would rather it bombs so hard it kills the idea of making a reboot with rule 63 of the cast. So that whenever someone brings the idea up in a meeting someone goes "but what about the ghostbusters reboot". Irrelevance will make people forget, I want it to be an example.

It's not a no true scotsman fallacy because it's not adopting a private definition of "woman" to exclude undesirable examples. It's just a reluctance to criticize women, whether they're making a film or criticizing that same film, thus ostensibly putting themselves on opposite sides of a conflict.

This isn't bad because of "muh womyn" or any other shitposting; I'm hesitant to accept it because it's just a reboot designed to appeal to nostalgia. I never really "grew-up" with it enough to be influenced by the goggles, but I feel like the original Ghostbusters was popular because of how original of an idea it was, the blend of sci-fi and campy ghost lore really was nice in retrospect. Now it's just supposed to be popular because it's Ghostbusters. It's safem and I know the whole "womyn" shit is a complete non-issue; it's going to be inoffensive as fuck.

People like to blame this "everything is a reboot now" trend on executives who are scared to take risks, but I think it's actually just as much the doing of "fandom culture," which I'm beginning to see as an extreme plague to all creativity. People obsess over shit so much and define themselves by "what they like," that they don't feel a *need* to go out of their comfort bubbles that have been inflating for decades. This "franchise" obsession is also the root of "not muh" bitching (very relevant for Ghostbusters especially,) because people have too much of a fixation on the original and what it means for the "franchise." It just becomes a shitshow from all angles because not only are we reinforcing the notion that franchises matter more than content, we're now seeing the scrutinization of reboots (which are perhaps one of the only ways to expand the "franchise") as an affront to creativity only because people care exclusively about certain things they're reluctant to move on from.

You'd almost think the only solution would be for nothing new to be made at all.

I agree, that part was alright. It was really more about the delivery than the actual joke though.

Also the bit at the end of the second trailer, with the ghost on her shoulders was goofy in a good way.

None of the cast members are talking about the movie. There are rumors that they were all required to sigh agreements to say nothing negative about the movie, and that their experience with the movie is so bad they have nothing positive to say.

The black lady got into a huge twitter fight with people trying to call her a role model, saying something akin to "why don't you all just leave me the fuck alone instead of putting me on a pedestal."

The on-set rumors also say that Melissa McCarthy specifically signed on because she was a fan of the Ghostbusters cartoon, and that because the director and studio have been pulling so hard to make it a broad comedy with "diversity" elements instead of a Ghostbusters movie that she's gotten into shouting matches with the director on set.

People like to shit on the cast because they're the "angry black woman" and "funny fat lady" but if the rumors are true they're the only ones in the studio on our side. In fact McCarthy basically sounds like one of us.

The point of a trailer is literally to sell you on the movie.

If the trailer, which is the marketing for a movie that is supposed to bring you in the door, looks like shit, then what does that say about the movie?
>>
>>82966204
that sure sounds convenient. Maybe I will suddenly change my mind and in fact see this movie, just because they ineffectively yelled at the director one time. It's ok, guys, the actors are fighting for us! They weren't successful, but the fact that they tried is a good enough reason to watch their piece of shit movie now! Please don't bully them; they were just following orders for that paycheck. They "wanted" to make a good movie, but it just didn't happen.
>>
>>82966204
I think Melissa McCarthy (or one of the actresses) criticized the first trailer for being confusing and making people think it's a sequel when it's a reboot. Sony told her to go fuck herself.
Regardless how the movie turns out (I have little hopes), the actresses do not seem happy. I only seeing them coming back for a sequel if Sony threatened them. Though I bet Sony will cancel the sequel if it doesn't make enough money.

He does this shit all the time now. His characters are basically a soapbox. If anything, Susan seems like the one that's rational enough not to put up with a piece of shit like the new Ghostbusters movie. Of course soapbox and strawman shit comes first.

Like it's cool if you want to give a movie a chance but holy fuck I hate it when people act like we're completely in the dark. As if it's not the sole job of the trailer to show people what the movie is like and convince them that it's worth watching. Like there's this whole fucking wave of industry apologists who think they're the mature ones for giving something "a chance" as if it's unfeasible for someone to come to an educated conclusion based on a two minute clip that exists to do exactly that.

I mean, holy fuck, AVGN's entire video is "Well this looks like something I'll hate, so I won't watch it" and people are going fucking bonkers. Is there something about this particular movie that makes you a pre-judging idiot if you decide not to watch it? Like can I make a list of the shittiest movies I've ever seen and ask people to watch them, then get mad at them if they refuse? This is some Facebook-level shit, but I honestly want to see how these same people would respond to this argument if it were attached to something much more unpopular, like Donald Trump.
>I'm sick of hearing debate over a candidate that isn't even the president yet.
I know it's a little bit different, but shit, how about the debate over Assassin's Creed for *not* having female characters? Or the debate over Hatred needing to be taken off the Steam store?

I would bet you anything he wouldn't. Or at the very least he's going to convince himself it was good. Even if it's the complete fucking pile of garbage it'll obviously be, he's going to tiptoe around it and come up with some fucking stupid deflection like "but it was a fun movie!" or "everyone's being too harsh on it!"

>>
>>82966326
I agree entirely.

However, the biggest thing to remember is that the marketing team is different from the actual team building the movie. A bad trailer does not automatically mean a bad movie, just a bad sign.

More to the point, the reason new Ghostbusters is going to be shit is not due to the trailer, and James's critique just happened to fall on the same week as the new trailer. It's going to be shit because it's a fucking reboot of a beloved set of films that has little to no real respect shown for it.
>>
>>82966326
Nothing. Not necessarily. There have been just as many good movies with bad trailers as there have been the opposite.

Which is exactly as big a failing as the movie itself flat-out sucking, but let's not conflate the two.

On a separate note I'm like legitly mad that this article exists.
>“If you already know you’re going to hate it, why give them your money?” Rolfe said, launching into a self-righteous dissertation on why the groundbreaking female-led remake was offensive to his sensibilities. “Maybe the actual movie is better than the trailer,” he admitted. “Maybe it’s good. It’s a possibility. I know I’m biased.”

That would be most of them. Most movies suck to being mediocre, with the very best scenes or elements of the movie in the trailers.

having seen and enjoyed John Carter I feel the need to point out that it suffers from the usual Abrams writing foibles (I.E. desperately clinging to every mild bit of backstory ambiguity in an attempt to make the writer seem more intelligent than he really is. Dragging out reveals of the aforementioned details, focus on style over substance, etc.)

I mean Planetary Romance novels tended to end with giant gladiatorial battles and crap so they weren't exactly intellectual snorefests to begin with but don't go into the movie expecting a tight narrative. Watch it if you want a forgettable scifi romp that you can steal ideas from for your tabletop game next week.

Given how the comic treats the Prequels, A number of the Stark Trek Movies and MoS, I really doubt that.

This might seem a little out there, but I'm convinced that fandoms fill part of the void that the decline of religion has created. I'll just say, as a third party to this debate, that a good trailer could promote a good or bad movie just as well as a bad trailer can. However, no one should be under any obligation to see a movie that they do not want to see. Hell, a critic who is assigned to review a movie in exchange for money should be able to refuse.

This new Ghostbusters will pop up on DVD, BD, Netflix, Hulu, TV, Crackle, torrents, and streaming sites far and wide. It's not like seeing it in the theater will be the end-all statement on this whole debacle.

Actually the trailer is alright, at least the central joke (it's a kid's movie- SURPRISE, IT'S NOT!) is done more or less competently. Which is why it's getting so much attention- they didn't completely screw the pooch, people who can't read between the lines don't see any problem with it.

Late for the thread.

AVGN and James as James have provided me with much content over the years. I dislike movies as a whole, and I'm not a gamer (though obviously I played much of retro games way back then). I watch his AVGN videos and his movie related stuff because I can tell he LOVES both. I can feel his emotions within his words and how passionate and honest he is about it all. And I stress that I give no fucks for movies or live action. The man is a legend and he deserves that status. He's enjoyable to watch, funny and nowhere near the current clusterfuck of reviewers and gamers that plague the Netz and which disgust me.

His refusal to watch the new Ghostbusters is a simple and effective refusal of a man who has his tastes, his opinions and metric fuckloads of information about the cinema as such. You cannot attack his position, only respect it. To accuse him of soggy knees and similar feminist drivel is not only to miss the point completely, but to insult him. Yes, this is a direct insult to James. The "people" who are "outraged" over his legitimate statements and given reasons probably know fuck all about the cinema and were never fans of the Ghostbusters as he is.

I stand by James and hope that his other fans do too. This shit has gone too far and is now firmly in the stalinist territory. Also, Hollywood wants you to watch this crap, and they will make more crap if you watch it, locking us in a downward spiral.

Think you fucks. You either take a stand or bend over for the pozzed cock of liberalism. There is no middle option. James said nothing about politics and such, but the feminists and white knights have dragged his purely movie related opinion into the political sphere, and thus nothing is off limits.
>>

They can't ALL be as two-faced and sanctimonious as they act, but there aren't any long-lasting perks in this sort of thing. A boosted profile, in-group props, maybe even a chance to become an "authority" on this stuff - that's all great for short-term gains, but it's not going to protect them from the same treatment and hair-trigger condemnation they give to others. Even counted sheep are eaten by the wolf.

I can't wait for the movie to come out. The Rotten Tomatoes aggregation will show a clear split between people who actually give a damn about movies and people who use the creative endeavours of others to justify their own beliefs without contributing anything of their own into the greater scheme.

Which is to say, there will be an obvious divide between people who hate the new movie and people who only like the new movie because they would seem sexist otherwise. Like, seriously, even Anita and Zoe hated the anti-Gamergate episode of L&O:SVU. It's okay to not like things that are targeted towards your demographic.

The term 'numale' exists for a reason

I don't think it's the fact that James didn't want to see Ghostbusters that's making him a target, it's the fact that he sees every other remake and cash-in sequel and usually enjoys them, and suddenly he just happens to be drawing the line with the one that has women. I don't think James is sexist, but the timing is unfortunate.

The comic does have a point, forming an opinion on a topic you know nothing about is goofy.

The problem is that such a critique doesn't really apply to Hollywood movies and their trailers. Trailers are notorious for giving away way, way too much of the movie, and trailers for comedies are notorious for using the best jokes in the movie.

Nevermind the Hollywood trend for cash-grab remakes, seeking to make as much money as possible on opening weekend before bad word of mouth kills it.

So looking at the new Ghostbusters trailer and saying it doesn't look funny, that it looks like a bald cash-grab, is far from an uniformed opinion.

We wouldn't even be having this conversation if the subject hadn't be polluted by feminism. If it was just another remake like the crappy Poltergeist remake, or the crappy Robocop remake, or the crappy Total Recall remake, or Karate Kid, or Day the Earth Stood Still, or Authur, or Godzilla (the Broderick one, at least), nobody would give a second thought to the trailer being rightfully critiqued.

Do women really think geeks hate all women so much that they'd boycott a *good* Ghostbusters remake?

>>
>>82998144
That's newsworthy? That one guys said he won't be reviewing the film?
>>
Why do so many people care so much that some internet guy won't review a movie? Is this movie meant to be the crown pinnacle achievement of feminism or something?
>>
>>82962015

As a regular reader, I can say without a shadow of a doubt That dan needs to stay away from this sort of thing in a comic about transformation and immortals. Nobody fucking liked the comic store arc.
>>
>>82998144
The thing is, I don't understand why people are getting mad at James here. Unlike some of the people attacking the movie, he's simply and calmly stating that he feels he will be too biased against it to give an accurate review and has no real desire to watch the film or give the filmmakers money, so he won't.

I think that some of the people in that image being included is a little unfair, though. It seems like Josh Gad and Katie Lowes are just genuinely interested in the film and you know what? More power to them.

Really, we need to learn how to have different opinions on inconsequential things like blockbuster films without shitting all over each other in the process.
>>
>>82998483
Yesterday my Facebook news feed told me some woman wearing a Chewbacca mask was newsworthy.
>>
>>82998366
Jeez, these guys really set me the wrong way. They're actually acting kinda like schoolyard bullies over this.
>>
>>82998483
Yes.

That's how utterly ravaged the SJWs are about people not wanting their grrlpower reboop of a movie about small business.

The real problem shown in the trailer, isn't that they're women. It's that they're not characters, they're caricatures.

The original team were characters, the comedy came from their interaction and the situations they found themselves in.

That's the problem, eveyone seems to think Ghostbusters is a comedy first. Like Airplane.
But its a movie with a solid story, with lots of humor arising from the characters.
>>
>>82998546
That's still more newsworthy than "man calmly gives reasons why he won't see a film". His reasons can be debatable but doesn't have any reason to invite the childish behavior journalists and people on Twitter have been displaying.
>>
>>82998513

It's because James is possibly one of the few models of reasonable straight white males, when he's not raging in characters, he's one of the calmest and reasonably spoken.

This really hurts the neo-feminists more than anything else because his /opinions/ are respected and that's terrible.
>>
>>82998483
It's obviously Sony trying to mount a smear campaign. They're aware of the bad press the movie is getting on Youtube because they were caught deleting negative comments that were constructive but leaving the 'sexist' ones.
>>
>>82998513
>I think that some of the people in that image being included is a little unfair, though. It seems like Josh Gad and Katie Lowes are just genuinely interested in the film and you know what? More power to them.

Yeah, I think whoever made that image should've just stuck to the people trying to take shots at AVGN.

Seriously though, and this coming from the types of people who probably get all bitchy about cyber bullying. It's funny because if a woman ever got this kind of treatment all of these people would be super worked up over it. And James probably got a good share of actual bullying when he grew up too.

>>
>>82998666
The more I'm reading this the more bizarre it seems to me.

They're calling his video 'nerd rage' and a rant when it's about as far from a rant as anything he's ever made.

If anything, he's saying that there will be no rant here, because he doesn't want to get needlessly angry about something he knows he'll dislike. That's a fairly mature position to take.
>>
>>82963296
Do you even know anything about James?

Some of his most popular videos were about Ghostbusters. He probably had countless people asking him his thoughts on the movie, and so he fucking gave them.

You see that's the thing I hate about these people shitting on the guy. They don't know anything about him. They call him a "man-baby" when he has a wife, a kid, and a successful career.
>>
>>82962061

>>
>>82999424
Well yeah, like I said, teenage girls, anon. I wouldn't say it's entirely to be trendy, but they're teenagers. Teenagers attach to movements; the social justice movement is fairly big right now.

It's sorta like how the alt-right got a foothold here. Teenage dudes feeling dissatisfied with the world are offered a cool new movement to align with if they just suck Milo Yiannoppollopooplllooppous's dick for a few years.

There's no point getting angry over any of that. Just laugh, cringe or whatever and move on with your day.
>>
>>82999498
>>82962061
I can empathize with both positions.

To be fair to Dan, this comic isn't exactly harsh criticism. It's pointing out that nerds tend to overreact to shit, and you can only ever get a full opinion on something, good or bad, once you've seen it.

However, James is being very mature in saying that he knows, in all likelyhood, that he won't like the film and that that bias means he wouldn't give an accurate review. In addition, he's being intelligent and actually voting with his wallet; he isn't a fan of the current trend of reboots, so he won't support it at the box office.

>>82999464

Think about it in context.

Robocop came out around in early 2014, months before the crazy fights over Gamergate and the Sony e-mail leaks.

So some people's reactions to defending or attacking the film is escalated (or could be part of Sony trying to drive up controversy)

It's sort of interesting. I'm looking further into this situation with the James Rolfe video, and I think I'm starting to understand why all the hate is being directed towards him. There have been plenty other, arguably more popular YouTubers (currently) who have ragged on the new Ghostbusters, many of them in a way that's way more harsh than AVGN's.

But when you look at his video, he basically fits into every stereotype of a nerd. He's scrawny, white, wears glasses, and is in a room full of games, movies, and other memorabilia. He's so much of a nerd that it's the image he's made for himself. Even compared to other nerdy YouTubers that followed his work like JonTron or Angry Joe, he simply comes off as way nerdier.

Which is why you'll notice, anybody who's criticizing his video right now isn't mentioning his actual arguments or beliefs. Instead, they're picking on him based on his appearance, or the way his room is furnished. "Look at this manchild with his Star Trek standee" or "I'm surprised anyone married this loser." He appears to be the nerdy white virgin that a lot of these (ironically) self-appointed "progressives" think of when they imagine the typical misogynist gamer nerd. Take a look at some of the villains from that GG Law & Order episode and you'll see what I mean.
>>
>>83002355
I don't know about anybody else, but I was vocally opposed to both Robocop and Total Recall when those films were in production. I actually made the mistake of seeing Total Recall in theater and it was then and there that I swore, never again.

The only difference between those unnecessary reboots and Ghostbusters is that the former were just shitty remakes and the latter is a totem for the progressive left to advance a feminist agenda. Nobody cares if you hate the idea of replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger with Colin Farrell, but if you don't think that replacing Dan Aykroyd with Melissa McCarthy is the best thing to happen to cinema in the last thirty years then you're a misogynist manbaby shitlord.

So what's essentially happening, as ridiculous as it sounds, is that they've made James a scapegoat for this pro-Ghostbusters cause. It doesn't matter what his reasons are or how he feels about women, all that matters is that he's a popular stereotypical nerd who doesn't want to watch the movie. As long as they can make his peg fit into the "misogynist white nerd" hole, they don't care who he is or what he has to say. Take this tweet >>82998395 as an example and similar ones like it where they bring up his marriage and sex life. While they know James isn't just some lonely virgin, they still try to fit him into that group ("Boy, he's never having sex again!") because it's part of the nerd stereotype.

What we have here is honestly a textbook case of schoolyard bullying. James appears weak due to his thin build and meek behavior. He's seen as defenseless since anybody can attack him without the worry of being sexist, racist, etc. Basically, he's the perfect target for bullying. They want to make an example out of him so that they can turn to everyone else and say "See? Look at this sexist nerdy manchild who refuses to watch Ghostbusters! That's the kind of person you are if you're not looking forward to this movie!" If you ask me, it seems like a clear example of using discriminatory and pre-judgmental behavior to harass and bully an individual, which is unsurprising but still very hypocritical coming from the kinds of people who claim to be progressive.

why does this surprise you at all? Half of the lead up to GG was getting angry at the sheer ungodly amount of virtue signalling that'd started to fill game review blogs. It'd gotten to the point where virtue signalling was crowding out actual video game content.

this is nothing new being 'progressive' is trendy. Give it ten years people will get over this bullshit. It's a part of the simple fact that a lot of teens growing up now have a trustfund to look forward to, a job given to them by their parents and generally a cushy life if they don't self sabotage. They're one of, if not the biggest demographics on the internet. A medium full of stories of crushing poverty and actual life destroying shit. They feel guilty they have it so good but instead of, you know, addressing the flaws in the system that lead to them having a cushy deal they slacktivize. They virtue signal. They say 'I'm not a part of the problem' by throwing money at the 'right' causes thinking the 'right' thoughts saying the 'right' things and never addressing their own hypocrisy or the nepotistic system that they cling to.

there's other people involved, con artists like McIntosh and Sarkeesian, crazies, but it's 90% gulity teens on the cusp of adulthood desperately trying to be part of the 'in' crowd as they haven't progressed past the school yard mentality.

Technically, you're not since you're asking for unnessary work by not remocing it.

Think about it like this: By investing ~5 clicks now, to remove it, you'll save yourself 60+ clicks in the long run, assuming they disable it at the end of july.
If they don't disable it, you'll save even more clicks.

I removed it so long ago, I can't remember if the nagging prompt was a daily occurrence.

So the only reason we can assume they let her fall is because it really is a race thing. That's...kinda fucked up.

A big part of the problem, at least as far as Leslie Jones' role is concerned, is that she comes across as a minstrel show stereotype. Look out, here comes the angry black woman!

Contrast that to Ernie Hudson in the original.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFX4fmldZFs

His race has literally nothing to do with his character. He's a skeptic, doesn't really buy into the whole notion that there are ghosts that need to be busted. And, oh, yeah, he's black. He's not a token black guy, he's just a guy who happens to be black. That's all.

Compare that to stereotypical angry black woman.

Holy shit, seriously though.

Every time I make the stupid decision to check Cracked again I always regret it. I don't know how often these fucking terrible articles are posted but I usually don't go a half a week before running into some terrible clickbait leftist bullshit.

I think last time it was an article that was something like "6 major issues with the social justice movement" and when I checked it out it was just masturbatory mess of sarcasm and white guilt (shit like "Why are they trying to put more diversity in movies? I as a white man shouldn't have to put up with that!"). The worst part is every time an article like this is written most of the comments, even now, are calling them out for their terrible research and completely biased reasoning, but most of the writers just ignore the feedback because their heads are just that far up their asses. I don't remember who it was but I think it was Wong who specifically said he never reads the comments.

I used to like Cracked a lot. I wouldn't even mind just avoiding the SJW bullshit but they've made it harder and harder to do that. Between the clickbait titles (like above) and letting their bullshit biases seep into the other articles, it just can't be avoided anymore. And honestly, I doubt they research their shit nearly as much as they used to, and that goes for everything.

his character was even toned down somewhat, originally he was going to be a war vet but Akroyd and Ramis didn't want to stereotype him too much and put his character on a pedestal so they dialed it back.

>>
>>83011399
Shit, it's worse than just "angry black woman". She's a loud, overweight, overtly Christian who's "street smart" instead of book smart. I'm not even saying it's inherently racist to have her not be a scientist, but come on. Three super geniuses and one "street smart" subway worker and the latter just happens to be the only black one. It couldn't be two white geniuses, one black genius and a street smart white lady? Or a minority:white people ratio greater than 1:3 in one of the most racially diverse cities in the world? There's no way race had nothing to do with those decisions.

And it's not even like you can really say this for the original because 1)It was 30 years ago and you'd expect Hollywood to get better at casting minorities in that time and 2)In the original script Winston was supposed to be some badass Air Force demolitions expert but his role got cut to give Bill Murray more screentime. And you're right. Even in the final cut he's not "the black guy" but Leslie Jones is absolutely "the black girl".

There is truth to that. I'll grant.

But, the problem the west is facing right now is that we've become so anti-tribalist, that we're importing an extremely violent and tribalistic ideology by the truck load...

And criticizing or trying to prevent that tribalistic, backward culture from coming is called racism and hate speech.

Anti-tribalism is self destructive.
Being overly tribalistic slows progress and trade.

we're attempting to create one big tribe as opposed to erasing tribalism altogether. 'importing violent and tribalistic ideology by the truckload' is blunt hyperbole. And what do you mean by 'the west' anyway? Scandinavian Countries are Not Western European Countries are Not Eastern European Countries are not North American Countries are not South American countries.

each nation in the west faces it's own challenges. If we're going to do stuff like say, banning islam we might as well ban christianity since the the latter was directly spawned by the former and has more than a few active terrorist groups in the USA.

you can't just wave a magic wand and remove all 'the undesirables' from society. Not the least of which being that no one agrees on who that is.

Look up the history of non-Muslim countries that get a significant Muslim population.

They are among the most war torn areas on earth.

It is a violent, military ideology with a thin paint of subjugating one's self to God.

To make it short: the difference between a moderate muslim and a radical muslim is that the radical muslim wants to kill you, the moderate muslim wants the radical muslim to kill you.
>>
>>83013017
nah not really. They're both religions that worship an invisible sky god. Islam is going through it's edgy teenager phase because the CIA, MI6 and other black ops groups started knocking over stable governments in the middle east thus destroying any foothold secular reasonable muslims had and giving radicals free reign to do whatever they want.

Scientists, Police Officers, fucking Janitors they all provide modern society with tangible benefits. What do priests give us?

and if the price for world peace is giving up the world's many unique cultures in favor of one giant ur-culture then I'd say it's worth it.

>>83013103
every religion goes through that phase. The catholic church shipped off it's restless youth to crusades so they wouldn't have to deal with them at home. Charlemagne is kind of notorious for forcing the pagans to convert at the end of a sword.

All religions are equally invalid unless they bend knee to a secular government and favor a peaceful, sane society. Catholicism has become a bloated mess that protects literal criminals and uses religion to hide scams, american Protestantism is full of insane radicals, nevermind the long term scam a lot of mormon cults are running.

'do what I tell you because god is on my side' is the oldest scam in the world. spiritualism has it's uses but if you're gonna target islam you might as well recognize the threat posed by other religions in your backyard.

A fanatic is a fanatic no matter what his holy symbol is.
>>

>>
>>83013289
he's misrepresenting moderate muslims. Go ask your pastor why fucking any woman you want is bad, he'll mutter about some prophet or another probably. If you're in christianity for 'muh jesus' jesus never had any issues with out of wedlock fucking.

Moderate Muslims want to convert non-muslims yes but they'll do it by proselytizing like anyone else. The major issue being they're outfucking numbered by crazy ass radical muslims who were previously funded by colonial powers in proxy wars and now are funded by dictators who like having hypocritical ephebophiles who either just like hurting people or who actually believe in their crazy 72 virgin nonsense.

It's not that Moderate muslims aren't fighting radicals its that no one is fucking helping them and they have damn near 100 years of history acting against them.

It's a shame, though, he was a solid member of the cast and I always liked his character.
>>
>>83013278
No religion poses anything close to the threat of islam. Religion holds at the minimum the same escapist value as television and videogames. Muslim countries the US havn't fucked over still have massive religious issues.
>>
>>83013278

Priests, back before secular psychology was even considered, functioned as counselors, and if they did their job right, stabilized a small group of people who under normal circumstances would kill each other for the smallest slight.
>>
>>83013443
To make matters worse, a lot of the material he did have to work with was cut in editing and wound up in a montage.

Aesthetically, it was the right thing to do - the film didn't need a repeat of the Sedgwick Hotel scene between the second and third acts - but it significantly cut down Hudson's already thin role.
>>
>>83013448
what a surprise, countries in the middle east have a different view on religion than countries in the west. 'muh islam' 'muh terrorists'

a significant portion of the 'radical islamists' out there don't even fucking care about the religion. It's just an easy cover for mercenary work, human trafficking, or the drug trade. Criminals are criminals, you catch the criminals and punish them according to the laws of your nation. While a significant portion of radicals in the middle east are muslim it's irrelevant. You can't claim to respect world culture and then scream muslims are evil period in the same breath.

>>83013483

Though I think pinning it all on religion is too simple, Islamist ideology is a major part of why that shit happens.

It's a lot easier to convince people to blow schools up when they truly believe that both themselves and the kids they kill are going to end up in paradise.
>>
>>83013592
>The Catholic church also commissioned a fuck ton of art, dealt with trade disputes, patronized scientists and did other useful shit.
At least you're able to acknowledge that those are things that they did. The modern secular humanist has embraced the delusion that Catholicism single-handedly plunged Europe into the Dark Ages and kept it there until spontaneously everyone learned to read again.
>>
>>83013592
Why the hell is this in a ghostbusters thread anyway? But we're past bump limit anyway so whatever.

You make a good point. Islam's just the justification. It could have been anything. It's just a way to make some people think they're in the right now. But by and large most muslims probably realize how batshit fucking looney tunes it is. It galls me how people so readily accept that it's so simple and black and white as "this person heard about islam now he's gonna go blow us the fuck up oh no!"
>>
>>83013773
These threads really do get interesting when they hit page ten.
>>
>>83013278
The crusades were after Islam had captured half of Europe by the sword.

The latter ones were because Muslim slavers were attacking pilgrims trying to reach the holy land.

The first military opperation after the successful rebellion of the USA was agaisnt Muslim slavers in the meditteranian.

Islam is, always has been, and will continue to be a threat to the world. That islamic golden age is almost entirely propaganda. And there's a damn good chance Al Jebrer wasn't actually arabic.
>>
>>83013749
how many people believe that they'll wind up in paradise for doing god's will? Which god's will? Yeah a significant portion of radical imams fill young men's head with propaganda but secular governments do that in their own way too. I take issue with islamic terrorists but even if it's a young, violent, often stupid religion the only difference I see between it and other mainstream religions is they've had time to integrate and calm down their radicals.

>>83013760
It's a bit much to pin keeping civilization from fucking collapsing on the catholic church's efforts but they helped in their own way. Not like there were many public libraries after the fall of rome. Private collectors, militaries, primitive governments and so on did their best to preserve knowledge as well. The catholic church helped, it did it's part. I don't even mind it existing until I hear about shit like shuffling around child molesters so they don't get caught. That's actively illegal and you'd see a secular group hunted viciously by any sane government for doing that shit. Why do priests get a free pass on Pederasty?

>>83013773
A lot of Muslims have what we'd view as backwards views on homosexuality, women's role in life, crime and punishment, etc and that shouldn't be respected. That weird shit with refugees saying 'well in my country women out after dark are fair game' isn't cool and men like that need to get thrown in jail. Not out of the country where they're someone else's problem, in jail. A rapist is a rapist no matter where he is or what god he pays lip service to. Same for murderers and drug peddlers.

yeah a lot of the refugees out of the middle east are criminals, but some, given the chance, could become productive members of society. prosecute the criminals, put the ones who are sane and reasonable to work.

we judge people for their actions, not what invisible skygod they pay lipservice to.

Yes.

And innocent families who've been uprooted from their homes and jobs by psychotic murderers should be given a chance to live a peaceful normal life.
>>
>>83014146
that comes down to the inability of governments in the various western nations mentioned earlier to properly provide for the innocent people willing to work and normalize to their new homeland with stable living environments really.
>>
>>83014079

Oh trust me priests aren't getting a free pass. Why do you think benedict stepped down? These priests are at least getting their titles stripped, if not thrown out to the governments for imprisonment.
>>
>>83014079
>how many people believe that they'll wind up in paradise for doing god's will?

Evidently the people who are willing to die for it.
>>
>>83014209

It's difficult to naturalize because there are criminals and those same psychopaths who are just smart enough to play the wolf among the sheep game repeatedly. The more governments try to naturalize, the harder the criminals push to make everyones lives miserable. It's a vicious cycle.
>>
>>83014321
it is but it strikes me that people who make the effort are owed a chance despite others taking advantage of the willingness of a government to allow a refugee to naturalize.
