Can we talk about this mad genius? There are lots of Moore and Morrison threads about how crazy and great they are but neither compare. They both play with religious themes but nothing like jodo does.

I think his greatest achievement was Dune cause it's failure lead him into comics and pairing up with amazing artists. But he needs amazing artists because his characters don't talk like real people, everything is surreal and needs an artist who can bridge that gap.

Reading through Son of the Gun now and damn it's great

I never got a feel for Morrison comics despite repeated attempts.
One Jodo comic later and I felt like I was reading what Grant had been trying to be the whole and falling short of. It's glorious.

Thank god for Film4. I would probably have never learnt his name or read his shit if it I hadn't Googled it after a late night showing of El Topo.

Kojima likes Jodo?

Morrison usually tries to keep gods good. Joro takes them more as poly like greek or norse gods, where everyone is corrupt.

First buy i had of his was just beforr going into detox so i wanted a large comic. Picked up Humanoids. Not his best work but it had some great scenes.
>>
Morrison's message is always in the small scale despite how grand the stories may be, while Jodo is a big picture type of guy. In that regard they're very different.
>>
>>82926956
Had to google him, I'm not a manga reader but this art is something i would get into. But jodo doesnt do any art so i dont see the comparison

Jodo actually wrote and drew his own comic strip in some mexican newspaper for years. The art was terrible (pic related) and the text was basically him retelling buddhist fables and what not. roughly translated:

>i won't open ... this is your fault, you destroyed the door!
>who destroys the door, he who kicks it or he who closes it? has anyone ever broken an open door?

But he started doing comics after his first (short) film.

Not Moore. He hates almost everyone but ennis and jodo, hell yeah. They should do something together.

Jodo/ennis preacher....

If he isn't going to film that fucking sequel to El Topo soon, he might as well write as a comic.

Oh shit I wondered if he would ever get around to doing that sequel. Looks like he's just doing comics.

Please stop repeating memes that you read on the 4chins.

Alan Moore loves comics and comic-makers.

There's an entire world of comics outside of Marvel and DC, and I recommend that you discover this world someday.

I don't know about his /co/ related work but he's about the biggest hack there is when it comes to films. He's the epitome of style over substance, his use of symbolism is laughable.
>>
>>82928008
Fair enough. It is easy to exaggerate on 4chan cause that is one thing it is known for.

But unless you compare indi comics to dc and marvel you get very few replied and threads die quickly
>>
I'm not familiar with his comics but I like some of his movies very much. I enjoyed El Topo, I loved Holy Mountain and I felt that Danza de la Realidad was pretty great too. I have yet to see Rainbow Thief, Tusk and Santa Sangre.

Had to check that list to make sure Love and Rockets was on it, pleasantly surprised he also recommended Woodring.

My roommates fav movie is holy mountain. A greatmovie but i prefer the comics. Cause he doesnt do dynamic as well as scene to scene stuff. Which with the good artists he gets is good
>>
>>82928515
>pleasantly surprised he also recommended Woodring.

Woodring and his creation Frank got a direct shout-out in one of the League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics. Along with The Flaming Carrot, Sin City, Cerebus, and some others

I was surprised to see a blurb from Jodo on the back of one of the Usagi Yojimbo collections

The guy is good. But a bit of hypocrite.
>>
>>82928191

This. What an overrated hack.
>>
>>82926691
I don't like his obsession with hermaphrodites. But it's only detrimental to the story in his weaker works like Megalex.
But otherwise, he's elder-god tier. Incal is a masterpiece despite the last two devolving a bit too much in phylosophical wankery for my taste, Before Incal is even better (and more grounded in reality), most of Aleph-Tau is excellent, the Metabarons is top-notch, and Bouncer is a very solid wild-west story.
Megalex is garbage, however; After Incal/Final Incal is an unecessary mess, and Royal Blood is pointless torture porn like I've never seen. At least I can't blame him for not experimenting.

>>82927656
The franco-belgian comic industry in the after-war period was very tightly knit.
The magazines A Suivre and Metal Hurlant were a crucible for an entire generation of artists, everyone knew everone and their work. If you're a good author that has a vision guiding your work, you tend to stand out.
(and it helps that a lot of the geniuses of that period, like Pratt, did their own drawings).

Also, after you've made Incal, you just have to ask to get the artist you want.

>>82927417
Actually, it would be better translated as "I don't give a fuck about the USA [comic book industry]". In Search of Moebius didn't always have spot on translation.

>Ennis and Jodo on the same level

I say this as someone who likes Crossed: I don't think Ennis is all that good. He's too edgy, and edge only gets you so far. Crossed was a good send-up of the zombie craze and people wishing for the apocalypse thinking they'll be all cool and everything, but others have done better with the same concept.
>>
>>82930174
Crossed is Ennis' worst works man. MAX is his best.

People like to shit on Crossed. I can't lay claim to having read much of his other work, but I read an issue of The Boys, and looked at some WWII comic he did. And they're both worse than Crossed. His obsession with gore and violence feels really out of place when not in the Crossed universe.

And like I said, Crossed was done better by other writers. Worse, too, but there you go.

In search of Moebius is a very nice documentary, BTW. It's full of heavy hitters like Stan Lee, H.R.Giger, Mike Magnolia, Enki Bilal, Dan O'Bannon,...
>>
I honestly think he just makes up stuff as he goes along, his comics seem very stream of consciousness style plotting. He does come up with some interesting stuff and he of course has the best artists doing work for him so it all looks spectacular. But it always seems like a waste of good artwork to me

Hilarious shit really, I was pointed towards his films once only to find poorly made art house trash with religious and sexual imagery about as subtle as Zach Snyder if he were trying to impress/bang an undergrad.

We're here to talk about comics, anons. Not movies.

>>82930911
It really depends on the work IMO; stuff like metabarons had a non-linear storyline and as a result I doubt he could do it without plotting it conscientiously. But stuff like After Incal / Final Incal was probably made that way.
>>

Yeah, OP, I think that's Jodo's glaring shortcoming as a (comics) writer--his dialogue is dodgy overall. And you touched on the artists thing--Moore (as he says himself) is REALLY GOOD at pairing the right artist for the right script, aside from his (admittedly dope) Moebius stuff I think some of his artist picks have been a bit of a mistake. Too much shiny shit.
>>82930007
The "obsession" with hermaphrodites is a magickal thing. Hermetic! Very important figure in alchemy and esoteric studies.

Thanks for the translation--so he's not specifically having a dig at those characters, then (not that I give too much of a fuck)?
>>82928191
Yeah, maybe, but what INCREDIBLE style though, eh Anon!?!?
>>82928008
Lol well said Anon
>>82928515
Of course he recommends Woodring, don't you ever read the blurbs on the back of your comics?! And he was a supporter of L & R since day one, basically.
>>82928269
I fucking love Holy Mountain, one of my favourite films. El Topo is great, too but I really like Santa Sangre and Fando y Lis. I haven't watched Dance of Reality yet but am eager to. Like the Dune documentary touches on Jodo influenced so fucking many film-makers it's almost outrageous the amount of stuff you can trace back to him. Like the other Anon said, style over substance (maybe, I don't agree) but what a fucking style!!!
>>
>>82933354
Marshall Law and The One were both published by Epic so yes there are Marvel comics on the list
>>
>>82928008
Have to big up myself, Foodboy (and Carol Swain) is fucking brilliant as is her new one Gast. Phil Elliott, too, was good to see him on this list and the "Posy" comics are great, I prefer that art style to the softer pencilled style she uses now.
Also have the original "Goodnight Irene" comics (which were published as "Good Girls", first by Fanta, last couple of issues Kitchen Sink), I wish more /co/mrades new of this work 'cause (aside from a few /pol/ crossboarders, probably) I think most would enjoy it....there really is nothing quite like it (you do get a bonus "outro" story in the "Goodnight , Irene" collection, though) in comics....
I think Strangehaven is fucking shit, though.
