I think the real issue is that Obama is just consistently professional and is highly articulate and socially savvy, and what would be his biggest eccentricities are fairly benign or never really played up. And like you mentioned, a lot of Sander's policies are about as realistic as Trump's (his tariff propositions against China, making Mexico pay for a wall, etc). At this point, lowering taxes is necessary as the average household income has gone down, and decreasing taxes for everyone would make a more convincing argument to have people pay them, tons of the rich already put money in offshore bank accounts and abuse loopholes to already get out of taxes, lowering them would at least try to convince them to pay

Essentially, there's very easy ways for Mexicans who cross the border illegally to not be sent back, like having documents saying they are from Guatemala or Ecuador, which means border patrol agents who catch them have to basically register them, and send them to the location they are headed towards with a court date they are supposed to go to. By doing this, we end up spending loads of money on illegal immigrants, billions per year
Even if we couldn't get Mexico to pay for a wall and send back tons of illegals, doing it ourselves would actually be cost effective in cutting the billions we spend on illegals
