If you can make AIs so good that they pass for living beings and even get rights, you can without a hint of doubt make a dumbed down version, with no feels, with the same understanding of its surroundings.
Or you could produce an AI with feels that gets immense pleasure when working, effectively creating the happiest and most motivated worker ever.

If you understand how a brain works, you can bend it to whatever you please. This also applies to humans, but surgery to do something like that would be way more expensive than building a squad of robots.

But even in the worst case scenario (godques magically spawned robots on earth one day) you could ask some robots to join a reverse engineering process, you'd just need to get a backup of their OS. Pintsize makes regular backups on marten pc just in case his hardware gets too damaged (happened once, I think it was in the military laser chassis arc) so it wouldn't be too hard to convince some AI to cooperate.

Consider that chassis are produced, and you must know how an AI world pretty well to make a compatible chassis (else they'd go through a long period of rehabilitation after changing a chassis), and this is supported by the fact that momo downloaded some "drivers" to get digits or whatever (when she was in the chibi chassis).
