Captain America is the second-biggest movie of the year

>After less than three weeks in release — and only 10 days in U.S. theaters — Captain America: Civil War has the second-highest box office total in the world.

>It's got an estimated domestic take of $72.6 million for weekend #2, plus another $84.2 million — again, estimated — from 55 foreign markets in weekend #3. Those totals bring Civil War's cumulative box office up to $940.9 million.

>That's less than $30 million behind the $969.8 million held by Zootopia, which is currently #1 for 2016 around the globe. But where Zootopia is in the midst of sunsetting, Captain America is just getting started. It should cross the billion-dollar box office mark before next weekend is over.

In my opinion, DC's biggest mistake is how quickly they tried to move forward with their cinematic universe. Marvel started out with solo movies before easing into The Avengers and DC should have done the same. Can you imagine if the Marvel Universe had started with Civil War? Everyone would have shit on it for throwing so much at the audience so quickly.

Granted, Snyder sucks and DC needed to make up for lost time, but some patience and foresight would have saved them a lot of trouble here.

I do wish people took this shit less seriously though.

Anon, It's since they have announced "BvS- the fuck JLA" that we are all telling the same thing.
>>
>>82797461
I think the biggest problem was the premise of Batman vs. Superman. Why even have them fight? It's such a stupid matchup to begin with. They should have at least started the foundation of "Hey, DC heroes are starting to get together, we're gonna make something big!" but instead, we just got a very bleak film with a nonsensical plot with a teaser of another big super strength bad guy who shoots lasers from his eyes.
I mean, why should I be excited for Darkseid when Zod and Doomsday will probably be the same caliber of fight? And before you all say that I don't know Darkseid, let's be honest, he'll just be a superman strength baddie who throws big punches and shoots lasers from his eyes in the Justice League film.

B v S v W.jpg
9KB, 300x168px
B v S kind of ruins Justice League on a fundamental level.

And not because it sucks, but because it takes some of the event feel from JL. Think about how cool it was going into Avengers to know that all of the big players in the MCU at that point were going to be in one movie for the first time. Hulk. Nick Fury. Thor. Loki. Captain America. Iron Man. It was a draw on top of the Avengers being a name. It made it feel like an event.

But with JL, all the big player shave already met in BvS. Batman, Wodner Woman and Superman have already met, already worked together to fight a villain and already succeeded in defeating said villain. So what's special about a Justice League movie now? For all intents and purposes it's already happened.
>>
>>82794219
Wait, Civil War has already made more domestic than BvS?
>>
>>82797461
I think DC's approach could have worked if BvS was good( I'm not gonna list everything that would make this possible but the main things are focus on the Trinity, no Doomsday) and followed by JL part 1( that would also have to be good) instead of WW
>>
>>82797677
I remember when the set pics of them first showed up and everyone was talking about how they looked like Dr. Who villains. And how hyped that made them.
>>
>>82797461
Nah, Civil War showed that it's possible to introduce several characters at once and not fuck it up.
In an ideal world it would be no problem to have MoS, then BvS introducing Batman and WW, then have a Phase 1 of sorts with solo FLash and GL, and then culminate with JL.
BvS has far more serious problems.
>>
>>82797451
>People still think AoU was worse than BvS
it was bland as hell but at least it didnt insult my intelligence
>>
>>82797772

Yes.
>>
>>82797615
Thor 2 tried to move in the direction of an epic story but it was filled with quips worse than AoU was. The only part of it that was good was Hiddleson.

I don't know why people didn't like Thor 1 though. I liked it for a first Thor movie, it didn't have to be epic cause it was him trying to get his ego under control.

I think Thor 2 should have been a setup for Ragnarok cause that even is way too big to contain in one movie. Thor 2 should have introduced Balder and BRB, have Surtur in the background creating the threat and have post credit scene of him finishing his sword.

I legitimately don't want to come off as a drone, but MoS & BvS were both HORRIBLE movies. The only MCU movie I would consider that bad is Incredible Hulk. Even the Thor movies and Iron Man sequels, I'd consider forgettable more than actually bad.

Are we still pretending the problem isn't DIRECTLY snyder?

Fucking STAS made a 60 minute mini movie cataloguing the first meeting of these two characters and it was incredible. Thats practically a third of the time Snyder had. There was no fat on that story, everything worke, both in and out of costume and you could have come into that movie without having seen a single episode of BTAS or STAS and it works.

To be fair, both Batman and Superman are far more known than Cap or Tony. People know what they are and what they stand for, they don't really need that much build-up.

My point is that the movie was doomed to have problems due to its timing regardless of who directed it. Snyder being the director made the problem a million times worse, of course.

The chat between Batman and Joker in Nolan TDK did not seem ridiculous at all. Batman came out out even credible, despite the ridiculous voice camouflage.

At the end it's the task of the film, justify costumed characters: if even the director first can not imagine it.. well... we have a problem.

They're my favourites. I really like the sci-fi, fantasy, sci-fantasy elements, Thor 2 was my outright favorite MCU movie for a while SOLELY because it had a scene with longboat starfighters. Shit was so cash. Iron Man and Cap being normal dudes having (relatively) normal dude adventures just doesn't compare.
I also like the Shakespearean blustering, the Messianic symbolic shit, the characters themselves, basically I'm just a whore for scale. I also don't find the Earth fluff particularly annoying, some of it's even endearing. Although yes: in retrospect Thor 2 was wayyyy unbalanced in Earth fluff's favor and they should have spent a lot more time on longboat starfighters. I'm glad Ragnarok's gonna be 90% space.
It also helps that I went into Thor by far the most interested, because I knew the least. I get got the gist of Iron Man & Cap long before I saw there movies, but had always wondered how the fuck Norse Gods flying around New York like it's no big deal was meant to work.

Better? I've got some self-deprecating analogies if it'd help.

Honestly, it was kinda obvious back when Corman's movie wrapped but only had a limited release, back before the first F4 movie. It's like with the Wonder Woman urban legend; they only sporadically publish solo series to retain the rights to the character.

>if you can took them seriously
There's your problem right there. This incessant need to take things seriously while completely misunderstanding that people can take anything seriously if it's done with legitimate care.

Audiences take a green puppet, a trash can robot and a giant walking shag carpet seriously. Audiences take 3 meter tall bright blue cat aliens seriously. Audiences take spikey haired scrawny pretty boys swinging around swords the size of airplane wings seriously People take hobbits and terminators and zombies and xenomorphs seriously.

Blue tights and a cape? They can take that seriously too. If the story is there, they'll eat it up.

Over the top self seriousness is not the same thing as "taking something seriously" Just the opposite in fact; it easily translates a kind of excessive melodrama that looks back around to being silly..

Since I already outed myself as a drone, I'd say he actually seems like he doesn't fit with the other main DC actors. They are all either miserable or cunts, regardless of how well they portray their characters. Leto is 2edgy4me, Will Smith is an absolute moron and very fucking dumb and Ben is just miserable all the time. Cavill should be hanging out with the Marvel crew instead, where he'd be appreciated and properly directed.

>>82799517
It's the lowest hanging fruit. It's not particularly low or anything, but it's definitely the least entertaining of the bunch, especially so late in the game. It also shares some of the most common problems in the MCU as a whole in the same movie.
>>
>>82799258
I've read all of them fampai. The movies made me want to. Now I've done weekend-long Thorytimes.
Honestly they're pretty faithful. The majority of Thor comics are about him protecting Midgard instead of shooting off to Beetlegeuze to fight radioactive beavers, sometimes to the disdain of his Asgardian fellows. Plus the Silver Age issues laid it on HEAVY with the Jane stuff, at the start Thor basically was the dreaded "romcom" /co/ refers to the movies as so derisively.
If all an anon's read is God Butcher and Simonson then, I get the angst I guess? But making everything a cosmic epic brushes over the core humanity of the character. All that said my newfound context has made me increasingly anti-hype for Rangarok with every new news leak.

These are funny, but they say more about the movie's quality than the posters' sanity.

How the fuck they managed to launch a Batman vs Superman movie with no competition and have it barely making even (if the $400m budget is true) after 3 years of production is unreasonable to assume.

Heck, the sheer thought of the franchise potential made Marvel double up and beef their movie, and it fucking shows. They even had to press their RDJ button.

Of course, now it seems like building a cannon to kill a mouse, but those people were just making the safe bet at the time. WB was and is sitting one a goldmine with a powder keg and people just didn't expect them to be eating the fucking TNT. With their foreheads.

In fact, with their whole universe intact, and the sheer amount of iconic standalone comics, WB has/had the potential of making Star Wars money with each movie. Instead, they put their good stories on the animated movies, and Zack Fucking Snyder directing Watchmen and a Superman movie. It's almost impressive how bad they are fucking up.

WB is a good studio for indie movies, because they leave them to their own devices, but the amount of jews surrounding their blockbusters is just too much for them to adapt that quickly. It's the same with FOX and Sony.

Every single top dog wants credit and feels the need to ask for this or that to be included or cut out because it might scare sponsors, so it ends up designed by committee. Sony's leaked emails sure as fuck aren't an exception to the rule.

That's why Disney has them beat: each studio has a boss that all the directors talk to, and each boss talks directly to just one guy. That and all those are creative people.

Whatever idea the Russos have, they just have to convince Feige, which has fairly good taste/understanding. He doesn't have to sell it to anyone (anymore, but even then it was just Perlmutter, which was one layer, and in no way any worse than Goyer or that FOX dude.).

That's why they have a higher batting average in Animation and Pixar and Marvel and soon-to-come Star Wars. It doesn't guarantee masterpieces, but at least prevents major flops, most of the time.

>>82802778
I think it could work as a start, but it'd have to be more carefully written and played to the inherent strenghts of DC's characters' archetypes, and be less of a generic action movie, structure-wise.

And fourth, with Spider-man.

Civil War was not perfect, but it pulled off a bunch of seemingly impossible things with fucking flying colors:
>balancing two teams of heroes without villainizing one of them or puting them against a common enemy at the end
>making it a Cap movie (by having the movie revolve around his decisions
>advancing Tony's story (and picking up lose threads like Iron Man 3 and it's ambiguous impact)
>introducing 2 new characters
>showing the perspective on a central matter of 12 different main characters.
>make Falcon look cool
>have a decent villain with reduced screen-time and theoretically low power-level
>have a middle dark chapter in a long-standing series
>make the movie simultaneously larger AND more personal
>make it a second part to both Ultron's AND Winter Soldier's stories and characters
>have a community AND an Arrested development gag/reference in their movie.

Heck, most of those traps managed to hinder both Ultron AND BvS to different degrees, and they just did it all. And hit each of their marks. I was happy with AoU's character management time/personality-wise, but going back it looks so amateurish compared to this.

The most common criticism of the movie is that the fight is one-sided, yet every discussion has people split on which side was it tipped to, essentially putting people fighting each other without discussing further flaws in the movie. Get this: the Russos Zemo'd their audience.

Avatar made a bunch of money because James Cameron managed to convince the world that 3D was the new standard. That it would change the face of the industry. That form this point forward, movies would move towards being exclusively in 3D and 2D was obsolete.

That hasn't happened, and people are not going to fall for it again if his 4 sequels ever see the light of day.

3D is nothing but a gimmick now, only really being used effectively for one or two moments in any film. Avatar wasn't even the first film to use 3D to its full potential. That was Coraline.

They pretty much all are liquid cooled.

Summer Atlanta is hot enough to melt you on a T-shirt. These suits are hard and thick to keep the shape. Plus his is full on black and skin-tight, particularly around the neck and armpits. Even looser, clothes-ier stuff like the Martian have liquid cooling and fans.

Honestly I think it's BECAUSE the Russos are sitcom writers that they were able to balance some of that stuff. A good sitcom has to be able to do comedy and serious, and most sitcoms involve relatively large casts so you have to balance different actors and plots per episode. Proper resource management goes a long way towards what made this good and the lack of it shows in AoU and BvS.

Oh, definitely.

I'm not sure if they were selected because of it, but it sure has helped them come back to do Civil War and the Infinity Wars: They are very very good at squeezing their screen time and dialogue so that just about every line carries some characterization or plot detail. Especially with the writers they have, which are also very good at characterization.

They got that from managing AD and Community whose main casts had 10 and 9 characters to develop in just about 25 minutes per episode (counting Oscar Bluth and Dean+Chang). They are very very precise in what they choose to put to screen.

The Winter Soldier opening scene perfectly introduces Falcon and Modern Cap in just 3 minutes, informs their relationship and how Falcon can reach/help Cap and how Cap feels about the present with not a ton of dialogue, and it carries over in this movie. Not one line is wasted on a joke/comment that doesn't serve a function.

They also revise the script to perfection before committing to filming, which leaves for very few deleted scenes, unlike whedon that rewrote AoU every day. Although being 4 guys helps a lot.

Heck, they've outright said that they felt relieved working on big budget movies, because it has a less hectic schedule and pacing than working on a low-budget sitcom.

We're not talking about how quotable the movies are, though.

James Cameron is a well-known name, so plenty of people went to see it based on that. Plus, even without the 3D, the visuals and CGI were pretty amazing (Remember that there were people who actually committed suicide because a beautiful place like Pandora didn't actually exist, and this made people depressed?)

Not to mention the fact that the movie was formulaic as hell. Love story between two individuals of totally different races + Race to save the world + big military/corporate "assholes" out to be the bad guys = tons of ticket sales.

He's not their Snyder because he has to listen to a bunch of producers and executives' opinions. He has to convince each and everyone of every major decision he makes, which leaves for a lot of inertia and little time for quickly refining things.

It doesn't help that he's dumb enough to eat ice-creams with his forehead, but even Feige would have trouble/give up on working for WB with their hierarchy. Heck, so much so that he got fed up at fox and left for Marvel.

Hey now, sometimes they do it for a bet like Chris Pratt and Chris Evans letting who won the Super Bowl decide who goes to the other team's town to appear at children's hospitals.

That and the story that Chris Pratt pulled a Star Lord by stealing his costume after filming so he could appear as Star Lord for these kinds of events.

With Boyega the kid just wanted to hang out with Finn so he did the entire thing in-costume and in-character, letting the kid explain all about Earth to him. Maybe they're studio mandated but when the actor goes to that extra effort and doesn't just phone it in or hang around for the photographs and then ditch.

Snyder has nothing to do with the musical score, the action, aside from the Batman scenes, is 100% CGI garbage, and I don't know what synergy between characters you are talking about.

By synergy, do you mean goldbricking one-liners at the camera for literally every fucking scene like it's a contest to see who can get the most quotes in the trailer?

When Tony invited Bruce to Stark Tower in the first Avengers, Bruce replied
"The last time I was there I kind of broke....Harlem."
which was a clear reference to IH.
Also the same actor for General Ross is in Civil War (and one of those post-credits scenes way back, talking to Stark).

I hoonestly have no idea. Infinity War 2 will definitely make 1.5b, I'm wondering it it'll be enough to do 2b. If the two Infinity Wars are 2b a piece, that's almost halfway there.

GotG 2 will definitely be 1b.

The wildcards are Doctor Strange (?), Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

So...will Spider-man: Homecoming be officially part of this now? Because that *could* beat a billion depending on early reviews. From Fant4stic and BvS, we know that early buzz can kill a film's momentum past the first week.

Could Disney actually have five billion dollar films this year? I guess Finding Dory or Moana would have to take off.
>>
>>82814470
Moana's essentially the Civil War to Frozen's AoU. It'll definitely be 600m total at least. If good, might beat Zootopia.

The next closest to a super Disney film will probably be Doctor Strange. But it might go Ant-Man (500-ish?)

marvel's been great at picking the right people lately. Evans, Stan, and Mackie have proven to be inspired choice.

Ironically all the big name characters like Natalie and Hopkins basically phone in their performance. Micheal Douglas is probably the first big name actor who didn't phone in his performance.

Do you honestly think the only two movies to ever figure out the secret to making 2bil dollars is to just stay in theatres longer?? All other movies, even the same studios with different movies, never put that 2+2 together?

Avatar and Titanic were in theatres forever because tickets kept selling, not the other way around.
