So, hypothetical scenario. What if Hussie never introduced the kids?

What if he just started with the trolls, and the entire comic was just their session in detail. We got dialogue between everyone, a thorough exploration of Sburb, every troll got a crazy strife animation for their denizen fight, and the entire thing ended with some crazy over the top 20 minute boss battle against the Black King.

Final scene of the comic is Karkat opening the door to the new universe.

Would that have been better than what we got? How would you feel if Husse decided that was going to be his next comic?

I think as a self contained story it could have been amazing. The problem is that it could be quite hard to connect to the trolls without a more human counter-balance in the form of the kids. Much of the humour surrounding the trolls and their culture comes from how it parodies certain aspects of human culture, or just how odd it is in comparison it is to it. I'm not sure the trolls really work on their own as an alien race.

I could be wrong however; I personally enjoyed much of the weird cultural stuff with the trolls and would have loved to have seen more of their society. I'm just not sure you'd get the same appeal as you did with Homestuck, perhaps you would if the trolls had been kept way out of the main story, but in return got a side story going more in-depth with them in their own session. You've got some tough characters to work with in terms of protagonists, but having more time to dedicate to actually developing characters could have done wonders for pretty much all the trolls.

It's hard to say, it really is. For all the shit Hussie gets, a lot of it deserved, he had an impressive way of bringing interesting concepts to life. Much of the appeal of of Problem Sleuth and Homestuck rests in that ability, teamed with crisp jokes and dialogue at the high points in the respective stories. I would think that PS showed that he can do a 'normal story', the issue with Homestuck being ambitious winning out over sense and proper planning.

The trolls would likely have ended up differently if they'd been given their own story too. Some are criminally underdeveloped and even those that are prominent in the story have little meaningful development relative to their place in the story.

I think it could have been really popular if it had happened like that, but we can never say for sure.

Hiveswap will get its big reveal at E3 and be released by the end of the year. It'll turn out actually decent and interesting.

HomestuckOfficial channel aka Homestuck 2.0 will host all official footage and trailers, which will be numerous, purpose-made, and form a 'release event' with arg-like puzzle elements.

Homestucks 'Epilogue', Act 8, will come 4/13/2017. It is intended to be a massively mixed-media event. There is a strong desire for some form of nationally broadcast television production to accompany Youtube and MSPA materials (some of the latter already being set in stone). It's a question of how quickly they can move on that, now.

It comes from his poor performance later in the comic in the few times he was involved in the comic, teamed with his lack of special skills relative to combat gained in Alternia. Most of the other characters have something that makes them adept at combat; be it psychic powers for the lower bloods, Nepeta's hunting skills, Equius' mutant strength, Gamzee's subjuggulator abilities, the superior physicality of the seadwellers, Kanaya's rainbow drinker powers and the scourge sister's vast combat experience. Karkat is the only one who doesn't have some ability, he's only got basic, self taught combat training and a pretty fucking useless aspect. I wouldn't have minded it much if it had been used as an opportunity to develop the two main trolls, given that's pretty much who you'd peg as the most prominent trolls after Vriska of course.

The two would be terrible for each other without dealing with their big personal issues, but after they'd work quite well given their chemistry and obvious care for each other. But I think they work equally well apart as they would together, shame though.

If Tavros had been a legit protagonist and Vriska a legit antagonist, [S] Wake would have probably showed him knocking Vriska around with his lance/legs while she watches like a moron (and throws some attacks she easily survives) before he finishes her triumphantly, despite the one-in-a-million odds. Something stupid like that. Fights in Homestuck only go in the direction plot needs them to go (compare Game Over and Collide).

I don't think we need to sacrifice (Tavros)'s character arc to give Karkat a better one. Instead Karkat just needed to be the active leader in comparison to Tavros's passive leadership. It makes no sense for Karkat to just willingly give up on leadership post-retcon, it was his primary driving goal, it was a huge part of his character, why eliminate that?

It ends up as another case of tell don't show, we hear all these things about Karkat being this great, sympathetic leader who will go on to do important things in the new troll society. Yet, we don't see him doing these things past act 5.

Yeah I agree, it's one of the weakest parts of the visual side of the storytelling for me in Homestuck, fights are very rarely well done. I'm still annoyed how the Gamzee vs Equius showdown went, such a fucking waste. Jack may be one of the notable exceptions to this though, given he's given and taken evenly in a number of fights he's been involved in, in a variety of forms. I mean, you can't forget the insta-kill on God tier John, that was amazing and really solidified the guy as a threat.

I agree that it fits thematically, but so would leading a small band of rebels too given that he's not a 1for1 with the Sufferer. I think it's fair he leads a group relative to his own personal stakes in the story as the important part is acting as an idealistic leader with practical application, which is arguably where the Sufferer failed.

I think (Tavros) amassing the ghost army was the perfect end to his arc, upon confronting some form of Vriska, who was the one who initially discredited his ability to get others to follow him just through persuasion. Him then choosing to give command of the army over and fighting LE was just great, one of the few solid arcs in the entire story.

Karkat already made close personal friends with a good half of them, and if Vriska believed he as best fit to be their leader than I'm sure the rest of them agreed. The only challenge from there would be convincing the A1 trolls who didn't know him to join the fight, but once the fire is lit I'm sure it would spread.

Karkat's blood power was presumably tied to the bonds between people. It would have been an excellent way to display that power in canon. Hussie should have let the dead characters stay dead and focused on the ones he dragged into the final stretch of the story.

Whilst I agree with all your latter sentiments, I think Karkat deserved to have a place in the waking world's story as he was by all pretences the main troll protagonist. If there's any troll who deserved to have an influence on the finale of the story it should have been him, problem is he got caught halfway between the dreambubble fight and the actual fights and ended up contributing very little, outside of some speculation regarding the Felt pool table analogy. He was just fucked after the retcon, being leader was just too big a part of his character to just drop it out of nowhere.

I'm not sure who got it worst honestly, him or Terezi. Both ended up husks of their former selves, Karkat flat out having a big part of his character lopped off with the retcon and Terezi becoming completely dependent on Vriska, despite her initial portrayal as the rivaling force that kept her somewhat in check.

Yeah, see they had flushed feelings, but they were never outright a stable couple because the two of them were too emotionally unstable individuals, particularly Karkat. The fact its specifically mentioned somewhere that he perhaps wanted black affections on top of red ones is important given the hate associated with black feelings. That means there some hate there, which comes back the issues both of them still had at that point, issues they never really moved past. I honestly don't think they'd ever work together unless they sorted their shit out, which would have been a logical ending point had they ever actually looked to deal with those issues.

I presume it has something to do with clarity, reducing the amount of problems she believed stopped her from doing what she could to ensure they were able to meet the threats at the end of the meteor journey. Remember, Terezi felt inadequate in the Game Over timeline, she believed she hadn't lived up to the expectations she set for herself and the retcon was an attempt to fix that and in doing so obtain a more favourable outcome that time around. To put it in context with the whole karezi thing, it meant she never had to deal with romantic troubles which seemed especially bad with Karkat, given his split feelings for her. I mean, Karkat is likely a very hard guy to love, he's abrasive, overreacts and so insecure that he lashes out. I would imagine that was hard to deal with all that time, so instead of going through that again she just cut it off. It's sad, but makes sense to an extent. It was just handled poorly like many other parts of the retcon.
