I cannot wait to push this damn comic out. I've been backtracking and redrawing so many pages because I fucked up. I'm at the point where I'm telling myself 'fuck it' and halfassing the last two pages so I can work in the next chapter. Pic related, it's not done but it's 90% there.

no 'arm in it i s'pose
this is how i usually go when i have a reference to use, just paste it in there and remove it later, when i've decided on the final length and moved the bottom bar up

this is also the last chance to have a villain cameo in that last panel. though there'll still be a little room in the next one. but at this point that one anon's advice is helping me fill them out.

>>82681200
Thanks man, that looks pretty good!
>>
>>82681900
i really don't think it hurts anything not to shade in one like this. and if it means you could use the extra time to beef up the background a bit, all the better. maybe draw in some tufts of grass.
if you do go back to shading, you could try just skipping the highlights except on heavily shiny things like hair and metal
>>
>>82681900

Yeah sorry for posting this again but I need help with something. Anyone have any idea of what I could do around the door area so it doesn't look so bare? Any kind of devices I could include that would look good/functional? The area I'm talking about is highlighted in green. I'm stuck on what to do with it.

this is also good. sometimes i fudge shadows by just drawing irregular shapes under characters. also grass will fudge up the edges of a shadow anyway (and blades that overlap the shadow help it look natural)

i just hope all of them have the fantasy/adventure cartoon feel i wanted to get for them

>>82683888
Yeah i posted Taffy before in a donut steel thread , i didn't tell any story about her last time i just wrote a little bit about how her power worked

She is not one of the main characters so the story doesn't really focus on her until later parts

but i guess i can tell you that the other guys are her family

The grim reaper found her when she was little, he couldn't find her parents so he ended up adopting her, he didn't want to scare her so he painted a part of his hoodie to make himself look more silly and friendly

the guy made of wood is kind of a butler and scientist at the same time, so he is just in charge of the place where they live

and the frog is an old mercenary that got hired by the grim reaper as a bodyguard for Taffy

oh and yeah the last time i posted her i had no idea of how to color stuff digitally but i learned a few things and the art got a bit better
>>
>>82683850
Looks like you put more effort into this page than usual, good going.
>>
>>82684049
a lot of parts of it, yeah. though other parts i rushed at the end (As seen by the WIP earlier)
the whole time I was thinking what I should have been thinking all along. not 'what can i cut corners on and it still looks okay' but 'what are people going to notice, and what do i want and NOT want them to see when they do?'
backgrounds get a lot less daunting when i realize just a little suggestion goes a long way. i'd still like to have included more, I definitely will in subsequent comics in this same location

>>82684106
oh and I forgot to say thanks
and also add 'and this is because the threads have me in a better mindset' which has been true of a lot of things actually

there's a number of ways of connecting computers so one can extract files from another, but I haven't had to do it in a while so I don't know. i DO know you used to have to extract the HD itself and place it in another computer's casing, hook it all up, flip a switch.. make it the 'slave' drive.. but on newer OSs it's simpler.
in any case, good luck

My point being, should I expect it to die soon, or is the fact that it's FAT32 & very small size make it more stable?

>>82686829
Back when I was 10 I was already dissatisfied with my storytelling and decided to go out on an experimental limb and throw together as many fantasy creatures as I could into one big story. I've tweaked it immensely since, dropping most of the excess fantasy creatures and developing a main set of characters, and I've been developing the plot for the last 10 years. I think it's going to be really excellent.

I'm interested in making it evoke strong, visceral emotions. Back when I was some edgy tween I just thought of the most heart-wrenching, gut-twisting stuff to put in, and I'd like to capture a bit of that passion again.

Also, I want to draw a lot of scenery porn, capturing the color and lighting of a scene in a way realistic enough to seem not just photographic but true to life.
>>
>>82687055
how far are you along towards your goal? 3 years? what's the game plan? sometimes I feel like I'm the only one just ambling along.
>>
>>82687291
Oh, I crashed almost immediately after starting. I started it in Fall of 2014 but my ADD med prescription ran out after a page or two and I struggled to force out any pages in the year and a half in-between. Lately I've managed to get a handful done pretty consistently and I feel like I can actually keep it up.

The scope of the comic as currently intended will have it going for a while even at a good update pace, but the story is pretty neatly composed for it. I'm just excited to be so close to the real "start" of it, and I'll have smaller goals to look forward to from there.

Jesus fuck I need to scale this down.
Does anyone know good dimensions for a comic?
>>
>>82689998
From my experience, the ideal size that readers like is one that's as big as possible without being so big they have to scroll left and right to see the whole thing. Scrolling up and down is fine.
Ideally you'd want to have the page automatically resize images to fit the screen of the user, but if you're only gonna have one size available, just don't go over 1000 pixels in width.

If you want to publish on paper, there's a whole bunch of different formats, but if you go with something that's about 1x1.3 to 1x1.8, I think you'll be fine.

tips on making the real cat cuter?
>>
>>82690487
I don't really think you can - her face is turned away she's not performing a cute action, and giving her more kittylike proportions is gonna make your ghost cat seem like a weird cat lolicon.
You could make the tail more fluffy, I guess.
>>
>>82690487

Tie a bow around her neck.
>>
>>82689998
Height is really irrelevant unless you're going to absurd extremes. 800-1000 pixels in width is perfect for a standard-style comics page like yours. When you scale it to that width, whatever height it ends up being while still being proportionate is fine.
>>

That strip would look fine at around 700 x 1000. As others have said, don't go over 1000 pixels wide.
I'd continue to draw the originals at around 5000x7000, as that's suitable for printing (which you may want to do in the future). It would also give you more leeway for scaling down to other sizes; you don't want to be scaling small pages up.

>>82690487
I wouldn't make the real cat cute; it would be making it look cuter to humans, not to cats.
Also, watch the cat's feet on the sidewalk. With the drain opening in the corner, it looks like the cat's floating in mid-air over the curb.

>>82689988
I think keep the punchline something axe/tree related. I'd also have exclamations from everyone except Skeggold.

How do you mean? Like, in individually assigned speech bubbles as opposed to a big grey blob of background noise?
>>
>>82691390
Just remove the text that's over Skeg's head, as even if it's someone else speaking, it could appear to be her that's saying it.
There's also "what" being repeated on the left. Maybe make the first one "No!" instead?

One on hand, chopping firewood is more into her character,
On the other, it kinda is funnier that she'd be the only one exited about stable cleaning, since that's more unpleasant than firewood

i seem to recall stablemucking being one of hercules' labors, so that actually fits in several neat ways
the only thing is.. her eyebrows. I expected the first three, she'd have flat, even slightly angry brows.. like she's feeling like it's dumb that she's getting chewed out. meanwhile in the last one i expected her eyebrows to be high and arched or angry in a 'fuck yeah' way. instead all four have the 'sad/worried' brows, which I don't.. quite think is .. well i dunno, you know better than i do.

Why would you flip it? The natural progression is from left to right, when she is walking left it looks like she is walking backwards. The progression is specially messed up in this case, where we should see our heroine from afar, then closer, and closer, instead we are seeing her up close, then farther, and farther and UP CLOSE all of a sudden.

But do you intend for this to be more than a hobby? Because it will be one of the most beautiful webcomics out there for sure, but you take too long to draw a page, and right now the story progression seems to be too slow.
I have the same problem of taking too long to draw a page, I spend 45 hours usually every week, but the pages are huge, maybe 20-25 panels every week, the story arcs taking 8 pages from start to finish.

Think about how long it will take until you finish your story, adding the time you spend do draw, and the amount of pages you will need to get to the ending.
By the way, it took 3 months for me to finish the first page of my webcomic, I was uncertain about everything, the software, the style and all that, but I picked up the pace on the second page, so maybe that is your case?

I think that page is more of a introductory splash page. Ideally i'm experimenting with panel and spacing not quite as detailed or complex as this.

Either several small panels or a few larger ones across a page. Time wise worked on it in lunch breaks during my 9-5 day job so I guess its still in its hobby stages. Story wise its more or less sorted out and I've planned out the second page which is less certainly less complicated and forgiving. I think i'll get into a rhythm soon or at least hope I will.

Ah, I just love writing an angry boss characters. And better yet, angry boss of an angry boss. It's a trope, or maybe a cliche even, but I love it. Couldn't get enough of it.

This is just an practice and an early concept of him, but I wanted to give him something red to wear to make him feel a bit more satanic. He's really a lovely guy, I'm sure, but when the main character fucks around with half-assed magic, he gets mad as hell. He doesn't know magic, so that's probably why he's so angry, and honestly, scared of it.

What type of characters, scenes.. or whatever, are your favorite to write, guys?

Also, you've had any fun experiences with angry bosses? I'm always interested to hear, cause my comic has a lot of boss/employee interactions. Not every single one is this hostile, of course.

So I want to pitch you guys an adult wc idea I have in mind, because I don't want to waste work on it if it's inherently shit.

Basically, million-years old comically hot alien girl travels the multiverse studying (and participating in) the different sexual habits of the many wacky civilizations that inhabit it - all work for her thesis in sexuology. She's accompanied by her best friend, an amiable space boar, eternally hungry.

Each issue they'd teleport to a new world. They'd try to befriend the locals, learn their language, partake of their cuisine, fuck them, have fun and then say goodbye. Unless something bad happens and hijinks ensue.

Style would be kind of cartoony/psychedelic and would have a light, feel good mood. A weird combination of standard porn comic and trippy space exploration/contemplative thingie.

Thoughts?

I think it could be really fun - the idea itself gives me a Space Dandy/Rick and Morty vibe, and I love both of those things. This sounds like it has a lot of potential but the space boar seems kind of out of place and dull. Maybe have the main character be conventionally sexy and have her partner also be a space slut into similar studies but isn't even remotely human. Maybe some kind of crazy amorphous blob of wad of identical that is capable of reproducing with literally anything alive due to her bizarre physicality. This could also make tentacles as a consistent option. It'd be even funnier if often times she's considered the more beautiful of the two while the conventionally hot one is the more intellectual one kind of like a velma/daphne thing.

Bamboo Pen and Touch. Every tablet I've had ended up with debilitating pressure sensitivity issues, but this one does it pretty infrequently. I'm still eager to not rely on it anymore, I have an issue with tablets where I think I've lifted the pen or eased the pressure enough that I've stopped drawing but it ends up curving off and it looks like a damn mess. I've never gotten the hang of not doing that.

I don't use screenless tablets by choice but I imagine having a tablet that I can utilize better would be easier than plotting out every individual line with a mouse as I do right now. Why does it matter? I'm just looking for a decent tablet with a screen and figured I'd ask here. Pic related is the best work I was ever able to achieve on a screenless tablet and I still think it looks awful and took forever. Well I'm very happy with all traditional art I do on paper and from what I've done on a screened tablet before, but whenever I do it looking at a screen separate from where I'm drawing it always looks screwed up and messy to me. I have a pretty high end screenless wacom tablet I got as a gift but as stated it's just completely useless to me. The image on the right is what I got when using a tablet and the one on the the left is what I get now but I'm wanting to be able to do quicker. I think the difference in quality is evident. I have years worth of artwork I did with a screenless tablet but felt like I never improved. I just find it all really ugly compared to what I've done ever since I stopped using one but it also takes way longer to draw things now.

No kidding. When I first switched, I thought that doing lineart with the lineart tool was better than sketching or using watercolor because it could be molded around and even though I never did chicken scratch, I did have issues with how I couldn't control my lines because of the pressure which wasn't available on my computer a few years ago but I'm glad I made the switch because pic related was awful schlock.

Basically it's Mushishi set in early America

Nah, they usually only visit Midgard when they're on official business - most commonly watching over battles to make sure everybody dies according to Odin's plan, but also sometimes stuff like putting blessings or curses on various people or granting visions. The other (pic related) is a comic about a high schooler who is struggling with this girl he likes yet is afraid to be with her, then a drawing that the boy and girl made comes to life and is hellbent on causing mischief.

>>
>>82712230
I see you try to push that theory every time with the only basis being "he never posts his comic when we ask".

But let's take a look at the facts about him:
>consistently posts in these threads
If he's here that much, he knows the climate of the thread and how aggressive the critique can get
>always a bunch of self defeating feel posts
The negativity is palpable, to the point where it seems forced. This is where I can start to believe you, but then we have
>rarely follows up, if at all
It's hard to tell who is the same person, but the line of inquiry dies soon after. And most of the time he gets 0 responses, yet he still persists. This person is clearly not here to relish in (yous) or seek some kind of interaction, and this is the strongest proponent against the "pretend" theory.

This may seem pointless and contrived, but I feel it's an interesting excercise. A lot of writers here I imagine can agree that knowing how to write a character is understanding the way people behave. And everything I see points to this guy just being some retarded autist scared to post his REALLY shitty comic.
>>
>>82711109
it think that you should put your your faith in the way you plan to execute your idea

a lot of ideas can sound good but if you don't know how to execute them they can turn to shit

in the same way ideas that sound super silly and shitty can turn ito gold when they are well executed im just look at things like teenage mutant ninja turtles, kungfu panda or regular show

if you try to describe them they sound like shit but but when you watch them they are actually really good

Just Wacom Bamboo. It's the cheapest Wacom, IIRC. I bought it around 8 years ago for like $130? Pretty sure you can get one for really cheap nowadays what with Art tablets with screens being the most popular ones today.

Protip: Go easy on the nubs of the pencil. Older Wacoms only come with like 3 extras. You don't want to use all of it very fast especially if you live in bumfuck nowhere. Some people I know who uses art tablets does a weird thing where they place a piece of paper on top of the tablet, and that's where they draw. Not directly to the tablet's... face. They claim it's beneficial.
>>
>>82711751
I think she looks ok. Her top head is flat, but whatever. What's weird though is that I often see drawings of your characters and they don't stand straight. They stand diagonally. I can't remember if those where just paper drawings and it's all the photo's angle or someshit. You also posted a line-up of characters and they are all doing Michael Jackson's bending trick. Other than that, she's ok. Ehh.

I research about the people I'll be competing with with the niche market I'm targeting. I open their works (I have no life so I can open every single one) and look at the quality of their works (art & story). I look at who has the highest fame and why, and who's the underdog who will most likely riseup in a given period of time and why. I look at my own ideas and compare. If it's decent/good compared to them and better than most of the guys on the middle level of that market, I have faith in my work. If my shit is shit, I redo until I have faith in my work.

If I get lazy of doing all these researches on my online stranger rivals, I just make sure every page I do is something I'm in love with.

That's a fair appraisal. Michael's honestly just some nerd, but he and Ellen share a good rapport and she thinks he's really handsome.

And I can totally respect that, as much as I appreciate them as someone who posts about my comic without my bringing it up.

>>82713747
Yeah, her hair grows at a weird 90-degree angle because I wanted to give her a distinct look for some blonde woman without going too cartoony. Her head underneath is normal.

And that's an excellent critique. I'll keep an eye out for it, especially since I'm going to be drawing on paper and I always end up messing it up because I draw on flat surfaces. I'll try to get my old drafting table functional and work on fixing it.
>>
>>82714314

>Some people I know who uses art tablets does a weird thing where they place a piece of paper on top of the tablet, and that's where they draw. Not directly to the tablet's... face. They claim it's beneficial.

Guilty as charged , I wrap my tablet in 2 sheets of copy paper.

True.
The paper wears the nubs out faster, but I much prefer it to the feel of plastic on plastic. So I bite the bullet and purchase nubs regularly.

Do I have to make my webcomic a one page per update thing or can I simply dump a whole book all at once?
>>
>>82720166
just make sure it's your book you're dumping
>>
>>82720166
>Do I have to
You don't have to imitate what you see others do. If you want to dump all at once, no problemo. If you want to do 1 page each, no problemo. Just be on time. If you told your readers you'll update every tuesdays, you should update every tuesdays.

Some will say doing 1 pages each than doing lump sum can net you more readers/attention though.

If you want to do 3 page per update, no problemo. You get the gist.
>>
>>82720166
you can't dump it all at once, the web comic police will arrest you
>>
>>82720166
i guess it depends on what kind of comic you want to do and how you want to do it

what i want to has a story so i plan to update it monthly maybe uploading 10-12 pages each month

but if what you want to do is something with one joke per page i guess it would be better to update it with 1 page each week

All I could do tonight at the office. But this pretty much closes the crossover for this month, which means I can sit up and start colouring the two from the months before.
I dunno if any of you experienced this, but I felt lately super, SUPER reluctant to open photoshop. I don't feel like painting anything at all, and I usually have artist block, but on paper I'm doing a lot of stuff, it's just that nothing gets to the Scanner, and nothing gets ultimately done.
I feel no motivation at all, and I dunno how to light the sparkle to get back to it.

i'm not him but i feelpost as well.
i don't want to post my shitty comic because i haven't worked on it properly in over a year and it's basically stupid self-insert fantasy trying to pretend it's well thought out and hide the self insertion.
i can't draw well and have little strong desire to improve (improvement would be nice but hard, if i post people will say "improve!" and i won't understand and then when i fail to improve they'll get upset.)

mostly i'm here to ask carefully crafted questions designed to get people to say "yes, you should do the thing you want to do anyway." because i need constant positive feedback to get anything difficult done, and something as simple as drawing is difficult for me. i don't like drawing when i have a specific idea in mind instead of just having fun, but i have to do it if i want to make the idea anything except an idea.

>>
I just came up with an interesting idea for practice. Get a friend to script out a page they like of an existing comic that you haven't read before and then send the script to you to redraw. Doesn't have to be anything detailed, just enough to show how you'd frame everything. If there are specific characters on the page they could send reference for them. Afterward, you compare the original comic page to how you interpreted the script and see how you might improve in expression/composition/paneling.

>>82731172
I don't know about that, but it was a gag comic that involved a meme, which I have to admit strikes me as a terrible idea. It came pre-aged.

I think it subverts the reader's expectations in an interesting way, because he isn't sad about getting called a faggot, but for something completely unrelated.

it is very... distinct. however rather than inventing some queerass reality like tumblry things generally do, this actually reflects reality.. the key is the creators have actually LIVED. so it's not just some dumb teenagers wanking, it's what appears to be cranky middle aged men pouring out their experience.

It's just some dudes in their twenties, same as everyone else here except Dewd.

I've read The Sisters, and I just don't like it. Urban fantasy isn't my thing in the first place, and a lot of the characters a lot of the time sound like Kevin Smith wrote them, which isn't a compliment. I enjoy the art except when the artist has to draw thick girls, where it becomes just really unappealing.

No fat girls? The second girl isn't fat to you?
No dykes, the first two ms. muscles are pretty dykey.
There are no PoC girls and no dyed hair, but does it negates the two square-jawed-long face-not-sure it's-a-girl-or-a-tranny girls?
And also, tumblr is more than this, it's this "let's exagerate every body shape on their grossest features because every body shape is beautiful" that I can't stand.

>>82734658
What does that even mean, dude? Did the creators live some reality with androginous girls fighting demons? And that makes bad tumblr designs good?

>>82735044
OP here, and my case is exactly the opposite, I love fantasy, and I want to read a good urban fantasy, and I like Kevin Smith.

I don't think the problem is them being ugly it's that most all of them are ugly and yet they're drawn in a romanticized manner kind of like in Steven Universe. I don't personally care even if it's not my cup of tea but I can see why it's attributed to tumblr and the whole "self acceptance above self improvement" philosophy.
>>
>>82737668
if it wasnt for Jam I'd probably feel similarly
but between Jam and the cool cop guy, along with both of the main guises of the shapeshifter, we have aesthetics covered
then between the homeless chick and the impossibly convincing brown trap, we have 'not totally my cup of tea but still pretty arousing' covered. not to mention beatrice's earlier look, which was pretty hot but unfortunately not distinctive enough, so this version is better.
then we have barbara streisand and young kevin smith, who are just too FUN for me to care they're oogles in a tumblry way. that I think is the key.. and the key tumblrfags should listen to more.. that it's the INSIDES that matter. PC dorks are always like 'let's just paint this one brown or add tits and that will solve everything!' and forget to make them interesting people.

That makes sense. I never really got the "romanticized" vibe from what little of the comic I've gotten around to reading - they're flawed characters in a flawed universe and I feel like their designs reflect that, rather than trying to make some point about how everyone's beautiful.

Not sure if I'm gonna actually go with this strip right now because talking cat shenanigans might seem a bit sudden.

Is the joke clear, at least?

transcript because I can't write legibly for shit:
p1:
>Skeggöld!
>Come quick!
p2: a cat is pointing at a wooden vat
>Cat: Like a billion mice just snuck into this vat of delicious milk!
>Cat: You gotta let me in there so I can stop them!
p3: Skeggöld is looking into the vat, which is full of some dairy product, with the cat hanging off of her shoulder.
>Skeggöld: I don't SEE any mice.
>Cat: Mice are excellent swimmers!
>Cat: Uh, and remember to close the lid behind me so they can't escape!
p4: Skeggöld is drop-kicking the cat out of frame while talking to another valkyrie.
>Skeggöld: I don't really see the utility of having cats that talk.
>Other valkyrie: Yeah, but lady Freyja thinks they're "cute"
>Cat, flying through the air: Curse yoooouuuu

the last panel explains it well enough. do they have any other powers in the stories? because that could make a good secondary punchline. like "they can also __ for whatever reason"

Actually now that you mention it, I can't even find an original source on Freyja's cats being able to talk (or being blue) outside of new-age hippie type pagan sites.

Cats not talking are exactly what makes them good company in Skeggöld's opinion.

>>82739208
I completely forgot to answer your question; no, I don't believe Freyja's cats are described as having any inherent supernatural abilities except for maybe being able to talk.
You might infer that they're capable of flying or are super strong since just two of them are capable of pulling around Freyja in her cart, and maybe drag her across the sky, but in the universe of Carrion Girls at least, that's Freyja enchanting them (IRL they might originally have been bears, lynxes or martens)
>>
>>82739781

>>
>>82740987
>>82741027
I can't really get rid of talking cats because they'll eventually become relevant to the Plot, but I'll drop a comment explaining it below the comic.

I might play Freyja as a bit of a crazy cat lady who's badly coping with the disappearance of her husband, but that characterizaiton is probably a bit too complicated to get into right here.
>>
>>82739781
Meh, how many fairy tales have talking animals for no reason.
I thought her cats were giant, though maybe just the ones that pull her chariot
>>
>>82741516
>Meh, how many fairy tales have talking animals for no reason.
Yeah, but I've already locked myself off from going down that road because I want the power of human speech to suggest there's some supernatural stuff going on, like with Odin's ravens or the Fenris wolf.

The cats being giant are a common interpretation of how they can manage to pull her cart, but I don't believe it's ever stated outright.
>>
>>82741483
yeah no reason to get rid of them. newagey versions of myths should at least get brokenclocked once in a while. maybe they didnt used to talk, but they do now, because freyja's a crazy cat lady or her hippie followers are or whatevs
>>82741756
also: you know what i'd do? unnaturally huge kitten. like it's the size of a normal cat now, but it's clearly proportionately a kitten. the mischievousness is extra justified and it makes one wonder how much bigger they might get.
>>
>>82737668
>the whole "self acceptance above self improvement" philosophy
Aw jeez, it's not about that at all - it's about making media that folks can see themselves in. It's like, "hey, these people exist and also share these experiences as well" rather than taking an overt stance on how they should or shouldn't live their lives. Like the Pizza family is based on the extended family of one of the storyboarders, iirc. There's nothing sinister at work beyond capturing an element of reality within a fantasy. The Sisters' character design makes it feel more realistic, if anything.
>>
>>82742403
there's a lot of different shit going on with those people, sinister and well-meaning, and each feeds the other.
but yeah sisters guys arent remotely that sort.
>>

>>
>>82742403
Scooby-Doo has a "realistic" cast, we have two people in shape, a skinny tall guy, one overweight girl. The Simpsons has fat protagonists in favor of "realism". In your case, what you want to mean by realism is actually diversity.
The sisters, like every other tumblr character design doesn't have realistic characters, they have a diverse cast of grotesquely deformed people.

Of course, you can have a diverse cast with realistic body types, but where is the realism in legs as big as oak tree trunks? Or girls with huge angular chins?
Tell me, how are these types of body more realistic than Barbie's, that the PC crowd likes to pretend don't exist?

You also can, by the way, identify with a character without looking like them, and proof of that is that there are people who identify with these impossible monstrosities that are The sisters characters.

Here is another team of characters for my comic, these guys are main characters and most of the story will be from the point of view of the guy with the giant metal fists so i guess i could say that he is the protagonist of the comic even when not all the stories will be about his team

>those rants in the about sections making fun of shitty comics and action movies
You made a comic based on the worst aspects of all of them. It's punchy and gritty in a way I've seen a million times before, with a sci-fi city setting that's indistinguishable from any other and unlikable main characters you seem to be trying to push with sex appeal and boring "slap-slap-kiss" banter, like that makes up for them being totally flat. Your confidence in this is astounding yet unsurprising given the content.

Make what you like, but the way you seem to view your own comic is leagues beyond what's actually being presented.
>>
>>82745333
cute. and pretty solid too. this art just needs a bit of tweaking to be pretty good. seems like if his knees are attached, the skelly's hands don't have to be separated.. and his thumb's presumably on the wrong side on that hand.. and the shading of the kid's hair doesn't make much sense. but otherwise i like this. looking forward to the comic!
>>
>>82745492
oh yeah his thumb is in the wrong side, good eye, i actually made these ones from kinda old sketches i had in a notebook specially for the girl because i posted 2 designs for her on another thread before to decide how she would look and i ended up making sort a frankestein of her old sketches, i'll pay more attention next time

>What is the Mars Project?
Well I could go on about retro-cyberpunk and neo-noir as genres, and wax philosophical about the medium, but at its base The Mars Project is a love letter to everything we here at Unity Press love about fiction. We love technology and its manifold promises. We love gritty storytelling on the seedy side of life with a little political punch to make it stand out. We love Shiro Masamune and how no matter what we do we could only ever emulate him. We love the old serials like Lester Dent, William Gibson, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. We love the tin plated knights in sour armor like Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, and Mike Hammer. We love both Phillip K. Dick for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Ridley Scott for Blade Runner, and looking around at the comic industry today and the directions it’s taken, we wanted more of this and less of that. So the Mars Project is our project to recapture some of the intellectualism and the awesome of our youth and give it to you, the reader, because we are like you and we know you deserve better

Hey guys, sorry for thumbnails but I'd like some storytelling opinions. My friend suggested that I have a page before this showing mimi stuffing a bunch of stuff in her purse but to me that kills the joke and makes it super obvious.
Also im considering adding in an extra panel of clearing smoke and adding some dramatic lighting to panel 3 to make that bit more exaggerated. If you have any other suggestions, that would be great since this kind of thing is out of my comfort zone.
>>
>>82746902

>like every other tumblr character design doesn't have realistic characters, they have a diverse cast of grotesquely deformed people.
Err... so... you don't like cartooning? Every cartoon is deformed, exaggerated, etc, in some way.

I'm not saying get rid of Ken and Barbie - it's just that most people don't look like them (and some do, which is why they exist at all!) Of course one can identify with folks who don't look like them, but it's been proven that it hurts kids (and adults, even) to not see themselves in media (see: The Clark Doll test.)

Would love to know what comics here fall under the "tumblr" umbrella...

>The doll experiment involved a child being presented with two dolls. Both of these dolls were completely identical except for the skin and hair color. One doll was white with yellow hair, while the other was brown with black hair.[25] The child was then asked questions inquiring as to which one is the doll they would play with, which one is the nice doll, which one looks bad, which one has the nicer color, etc. The experiment showed a clear preference for the white doll among all children in the study.[26] These findings exposed internalized racism in African-American children, self-hatred that was more acute among children attending segregated schools. This research also paved the way for an increase in psychological research into areas of self-esteem and self-concept.[9]

>This work suggests that by its very nature, segregation harms children and, by extension, society at large, a suggestion that was exploited in several legal battles.

it 'suggests' to me that people naturally like fairer features more.

They repeated the study 50 years after Brown vs. Board of Education and found the same results. It hurts kids to not see themselves reflected in the world around them. It makes them feel like they don't have the power to shape it or that they have a place within it.

That's all there is to inclusion/diversity/whatever word you want to call it. It's not a sinister agenda, the decline of cartoons, etc - in the past cartoonists and animators, especially showrunners, shared a common demographic. As that demographic changes, so will the demographic of the cartoons being produced - folks are merely drawing from what and who they see around them.
>>
>>82747847
what about that experiment indicates that it hurts anyone?
if they did it 50 years later doesn't that mean people just inherently like the looks of lighter colored things better?
especially given that culture is so generally hostile or at least mocking towards white people, particularly with regards to 'coolness'
have they tried it with something other than dolls? or more of a variety in skin tones maybe? something a tad more scientific?
>>
>>82747524
>>82747627

>>
>>82747989
Different than I imagined but it does make more sense. Thanks!
>>
>>82747917
The preference for "whiteness" isn't inherent, it's cultural. If you Google the study there are multiple articles that explain in greater detail. I'm not gonna /pol/ it up in this humble thread of ours, but here's an anecdote from an article about the newest version of the study that illustrates what I'm talking about:

>When Kiri was in pre-kindergarten, enjoying the tales of Cinderella and Snow White, she once said out loud at school that she wanted to be a princess, too. A little friend, a Latino boy, quickly dispelled her dream. He told her she couldn’t be a princess because she was Black and that only White girls were princesses.

And this hurts nobody how?
>>
>>82748195
so now that no princesses are allowed to be white, shouldn't this have reversed itself?
>>
>>82748195
Was that girl from alabama or something? No kid ever thought bullshit like that when I was a kid. Girls wanted to be ninja turtles or whatever. If anyone told them 'you can't be __' they would immediately say 'yes i can' even if it was something true, like can't be president if you're not born in the country, can't be an animal when you grow up
>>
>>82748195
So does it hurt any white kids to be told "You can't play any of your famous black heroes, or a native american brave, or anything like that because it's offensive" ?
>>
>>82748221
>so now that no princesses are allowed to be white, shouldn't this have reversed itself?
Rapunzel, Merida, Vanellope, the new Cinderella remake...

>>82748332
I don't know. I know it was common where I'm from growing up, and from working with children in my job since I've been an adult.

>>82748383
It's the context - it's one thing to wear a broad perception of a people as a costume and another to pay tribute to a specific person. That's very different than dressing up "like a black person", "like a Mexican", etc. When I was a kid we all dressed up as a black historical figure and gave presentations during black history month, including the white kids. The teacher that came up with this assignment was black and certainly quite liberal, and nobody took offense...
>>
>>82748582
well i'm glad nobody got mad, but.. it was still black history month. your very own history month, that's just a different double standard from that 'context' thing.

why the fuck are we talking about this in this thread
>>
>>82748651
Literally every other month is white history month though, dude.

Also we're discussing this because of the diversity in The Sisters designs. We also touched on this in a previous thread with Scribs character designs. It's worth talking about since we're all constructing our own little worlds and those who occupy them, and it's important to consider what is informing us as we do so...
>>
>>82748762
>Literally every other month is white history month though, dude.
pretty sick of hearing that. unless by history you mean 'bashing all the white people and leaving them out of google doodles'

besides if anything the sisters is 'golliwog'ing white people. something i've also said of brad bird art and a lot of other shit. so what's the prob? it's the story that matters.
>>
>>82748908
I'm too tired to keep debating this but white people have such broad representation in media that there's plenty of positive to balance it out. We're still at the point in our culture where usually if a movie has a black protag it's relegated to being a "black movie" (similar to how movies prominently featuring women are "chick flicks") - when that's not a thing, then tell me it's "just the story that matters."
>>
>>82749055
>We're still at the point
we got well out of that point, then back IN. and it's because of 'inclusiveness' reopening a wound that had healed, dude.
as for the chick flicks thing, that is marketing creating a feeling so they can capitalize on it. the same as pornographers supporting prudishness and restrictive attitudes.
>>
>>82747291
There are a lot of ways you can exaggerate and accentuate stuff in cartoons. This tumblr style is a special style that chooses to exaggerate and to highlight the grossest and ugliest features a character can have. They have to always make the grossest body types, if they are fat, they have legs the size of trees with stretch marks all over, if they are thin, they are elastic skeletons.
Maybe few people look like barbies, but far less people look like the dyke type tumblr loves to portrail.

>>82747847
Now this test, I would have to look more into this study, I have seen the video you count as a repeated study, but it's just some guy with an agenda trying to recreate the test with a pool of 20 kids, which does not count as a study.
The important thing is... ok, black kids chose white dolls as the beautiful good guys, but why do you think this is because of portrail in the media? Where is the connection here?

The demographic isn't changing, people who draw and consume cartoon, comics and nerdy movies are still majority white nerdy guys in America, it's just the PC bullying to portray more women and people of color in these mediums that became bigger.

Now, this is kind of off topic, but it's still related, you keep saying this politically correct thing isn't an evil agenda, because of course, how would being inclusive and not discriminatory be evil? What you need to know is its roots, and the real agenda behind social movements.
There is this one socialist who realised the workers wouldn't rise to create a socialist revolution like Marx had thought, so his idea was to infiltrate socialist agenda into legitimate movements like human rights, women's rights, and all that. So even when you have equality of oportunity in society, these fights can never stop, they have to create conflict, because these fights, once legitimate, aren't about women, or black people, they are about socialism. And don't fool yourself, socialism is evil.
>>
>>82749506
kinda reminds me of that book (something like 'the cage' or something generic and unmemorable like that) that supposedly galvanized everyone into food safety (though there are people who will tell you that was the natural result of prosperity and no real increase in the rate of change occurred before or after the FDA, and i more or less believe them) by depicting this horrible filthy disgusting food factory.. and it turns out he was just a communist trying to bash capitalism, the food safety thing was a total unintended result.

and at least all this talk keeps the thread alive. but we should probably get back on topic
>>
>>82749586
I remember learning about that in US history! We had to read an excerpt about how sausage supposedly was made and I almost puked. RATS in the SAUSAGE dude.

>>82749506
That may be so, but I don't think the folks working on these cartoons (or the networks green lighting them) have socialism on their mind. CN, Nick, etc will greenlight what they believe will make the most money - which happens to be Adventure Time-like shows at the moment. This is especially funny because Pen Ward said he designed the characters to be very commercial, marketable, and appealing to consumers.

Also the demographics ARE changing. Eight years ago I could find only a few comics with a woman's name on them - it's much easier now - and women cartooning isn't a new thing. It's just new that they are being recognized for their work.

Also there was another article I read where the study had been conducted a second time by a group of actual medical pros, whose studies led them to believe the bombardment of children with certain imagery creates a bias (in this case, a bias toward fairness.) I've also had adult friends of mine tell me how they used to constantly wish they weren't black as kids, felt they were ugly or bad, etc because they never saw people like themselves doing the positive things they dreamed of. White girls have 7 princesses to choose from - black girls have one, and that wasn't until 2008.

basically yeah, these are problems where... if you have the LUXURY of worrying about that problem, you must be doing pretty well
and yeah the irony is capitalism is the main driving force behind this shit. so if it really doesn't work (and it doesn't) it won't last.
most of the shit that makes us really mad is when people pull a different KIND of power together to make these changes, instead of the power of green.

I suppose so, but "it could be worse" doesn't mean these problems don't exist. Of course, I am not saying most people are being sly and consciously pushing a socialist agenda through the guise of politically correct. Most people are well intentioned, and that is why they pick up the fight of these "opressed classes" for example, without realizing the real agenda behind these fights.
If you fight for black people you have to fight for women, and if you fight for women you have to fight for gay people, and if you fight for gay people surely you have to fight for the poor, and if you're fighting for the poor you are fighting for the worker and for socialism. It's this chain that gets people.

About demographics, maybe there are more content out there being made by women and people of color, but do you think we are seeing more diverse casts of characters because of this? Or it's white people wanting to pander to social justice warriors? The The sisters guys certainly aren't fat girls. And the people consuming the products are still white guys.

Going back to feeling represented in media though, I don't get why the PC police lump "white people" into the same bucket of representation. I was talking to a friend the other day about this, he is of asian descent and he never had a problem with this (asian being even less represented than black people), and I was talking about how I never had a problem as well, but also as how, being white with blond hair, I never felt the standard brown haired white guy looked like me either. I remember liking to see other blond people on screen, but it also never kept me from loving any other movie that hadn't a blond guy in it, or that had the blond guy as the villain, as it usually has. So white girls didn't really have 7 princesses to chose from, until 2008 there were 5 white princesses, 1 black haired, 2 blondes, 1 brown haired, 1 redhead.

If you have had the idea for 5 years but nothing else, then yeah I'm on the same boat, but actually for even longer than that.
I've only started actual work on making my comic a thing for like a year or two, and those years of working was me fucking around on paint programs trying to make characters look interesting

iunno, at the time we were like 'fff yeah right you'll get started any day now' because he was so great
but he kept re-re-reworking things.. everyone loved his art and did fanart, and then he'd change the characters so it wasn't really accurate anymore. he also made us some nice fanart. dude is the best. Grim he was called?
so yeah maybe he really is going to take that long to start

Characters and plot elements mostly. It initially was more of a scifi ghost story, now it's scifi magical realism if that's a thing.
>>
>>82751347
Do you have any art of his? I think i might know who your talking about

>>82751377
>sci fi
>magic
>realism
Nigga those are literally all opposites of each other. How did you manage?
I'm also interested now

Scifi because science takes the place of magic in "magical realism", which is when magic is subtly implied to exist and is treated merely as part of the natural setting. Scifi tends to take place in an alternate reality that exists as a future possibility, rather than residing in the present. The science is never really explained in the story, it's just generally accepted and treated as part of the present day world the characters live in.
>>
>>82751480
Is it going to take place in the otherwise normal human world? I think magical realism implies that it's realistically depicted everyday life but with some magical twist to it.
>>
>>82751480
That's soft sci fi. A lot of hard sci fi tries to explain its imagined science in depth.
>>
>>82751510
There's magic users within the universe, but it's not treated in the same manner as low fantasy and/or mundane fantasy. Magical things happen and nobody really comments or notes these occurances as magical after they happen - but they clearly did, as evidenced by the repurcussions. The science is treated the same way - it happens, but nobody really talks about how. They live in the aftermath.

I hope you'll believe me when you see it! I've researched it a lot and these terms are the most congruent with what I'm maling, albeit not perfect. I'm thinking of Like Water for Chocolate as I go, even though that's... historical fiction + magical realism...

Not trying to say that your story can't work or anything, just being a pedant.
>>
>>82751131
Thanks, anon. I'mmmmm not sure it would be the best publicity to post my comic after all this ranting tho
>>
>>82751560
I'm a bit confused still. Is it "our" world but with magical science, or another world entirely?

The way you're describing it makes me think of Fullmetal Alchemist, but I imagine it's closer to like... Marvel origin story levels of magic-science, right?
>>
>>82751683
It's our world, with maybe four specific instances of fantastic science. But everything else is the same - the technology, dress, culture, etc, is unchanged. These are specific instances with specific results... only a few characters are affected, rather than a societal shift. It's possible the characters are making it up, or these instances are merely metaphorical stand ins for ordinary displays of exceptional emotion.

I don't understand, /co/. I have plenty of time to draw even though I work. I've written over 20 pages of of plot, characters, and script over the past 3 months. I've even nailed my character designs to the point where I'm satisfied. So why? Why fuck can't I just pull the trigger and start my comic?! Every time I try I get tired or demotivated? What's stopping me?!?

Once you do it, it's real and people can tell you it's shit and that you're shit for making it.
There's no way it will turn out as well as it does in your head.
It's not strange to be afraid of that step, but you just gotta power through anyway.
>>
>>82751927
Fear that it won't be as perfect as you envisioned, perhaps?

Start with a title page to break the ice. Make it a compelling image.

>Start with a title page to break the ice. Make it a compelling image.
and if it fails his high standards, what now?
The thing though is that if this anon isn't "tfw" anon who just evolved into an even bigger fag, the best thing to do is to just throw yourself out there. For example: the board exam is in 6 months, and you don't feel like studying. What you should do is file an application fee for the exam coming in 6 months. That way, you have no choice but to really study because you applied for the exam in 6 months - there is no getting out. So basically, apply that to webcomics. He should put his shit out there, GAIN followers, TELL THEM he'll be making a comic and updating it at so and so dates, and with people looking forward to it and a promise to fulfill (otherwise his name is soiled), he will have no choice but to really work on it.
>>
>>82751994
Fair enough. Although I'm not expecting people to think my comic is amazing but I do hope they at least like it. I guess powering through is all I can do.

>>82752005
That could be an issue, though I'm not sure what the problem is exactly. A title page sounds like a good start.
>>
>>82752114
If it fails to meet standards post it anyway. Just make it a complete image. It's less consequential than a page that actually starts to set up the story if you feel like changing it later.

Got expressions more or less down for the page. My tablet stopped responding after I wrote the dialogue for the last panel so I gave up for the night there.

What are all the must-knows when it comes to making money, (or even a living,) off of webcomics?

What are the most important things to do/know?

What are the best/easiest ways to make that money?
Ads?
Merch?
Patreon?

Yeah, but one of my basic concepts for Carrion Girls was that it would be based on viking era mythology before taking off in its own direction, rather than relying on romanticized 18th century stuff, neopagan ideas, fantasy reimaginings, metal, and pop culture.

Ah well, a bunch of cats probably won't ruin things.

>unnaturally huge kitten
Unfortunately I need the cat to be an adult and not huge for later plot reasons.

Anywho, working on cat designs because it's been a long ass time since I've drawn cats.
I know I want the cats to basically look like Norwegian forest cats with blue instead of brown and red, but I'm not sure what kind of fur patterns I want them to have.
I guess I could just have them be all sorts of patterns - make it easy for myself if I ever want to have people tell apart two different cats.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
