but other than that, all I've ever seen are 2 or 3 cels on eBay from Beavis and Butt-Head. I also saw a site where somebody said they won Daria cels in a contest. Either something happened or somebody's hoarding them. A good cel from the series or movies Daria would probably be insanely expensive because of how rare it is.

she projects her emotions onto her relationship with tom, is more rational when dealing with him, is unable to accept his wealth and tom calls her out on it while still being a nice guy.

the issue with daria is that we really aren't supposed to like her as much as we do. It's like seifnfield, they are terrible people but they say and do all the things we wish we could do but don't because we're polite enough to have a filter.

Daria is surrounded by a ton of genuinely nice people, her mother is over worked and her father high strung but they genuinely care about her well being, her sister is a brat but she's shown the capacity for growth but the real kicker is kevin and brittany. Kevin and Brittany are the two nicest people in that school, genuinely good hearted individuals that just happen to be dumb that daria treats with distain.

kind of went on a tangent there but the point is tom is this super liable guy that reminds us that daria is human and calls out her flaws when no-one else could since jane kind of moved on from that role.

I'd disagree with you on the Kevin part. Brittany totally cared about other people in spite of her ditzy nature, and as far as I can recall, Daria was never truly malicious to her even if she did make jabs at her and Kevin's low intelligence or at least if they were *doing* something stupid rather than try to shame them for it. But Kevin was a bit more...he was unintelligent and too immature to really understand social cues and came off as less of a sympathetic character.

He DID worry about Daria when she went to hospital, I'll give him that.

As for the OP and the Tom situation.. He brought in a fresh conflict to the story and some of the moments he and Daria had before they started dating were interesting and he was a genuinely nice guy, but once he and Daria started dating, where else was it able to go? His role in the final season was of little contribution other than the awkward episode where they nearly had sex and the final episode 'Boxing Daria' barely involved him.

That episode was pretty much the end of Daria's story (despite there was a college movie after... but hey, I just regard that as the epilogue for everyone who *isn't* Daria.) and there they break up. It's kinda colored badly by how Daria had to put up with some shit, but the end result of them behaving like adults and parting on good terms was, at least, packing some veracity rather than play out as terrible melodrama.

I think Tom's role in season 4 as mister supportive makes his lashing out a bit in Is It College Yet a bit more understandable. Daria sure as hell didn't put up with his shit nearly as well as he put up with hers, but isn't that always the case.

Daria got a little vicious with Brittany early on. I think they made Kevin the heel because they needed one, and even then he (and Upchuck) were never as bad as a lot of the fandom made them out to be when THEY needed heels. Kevin was spoiled and Upchuck was horny but neither of them were supervillains.

Like I think a legitimate flaw of the show was the teen girl perspective made it so that the only boy character who WASN'T a heel before Tom was Mack and that was just because they couldn't think of anything to do with the poor guy besides have him grumble about Kevin giving him an embarrassing nickname. I think you could've had a good episode with Kevin and Daria learning to understand each other a bit like they did with Brittany but eh.

The show was way better when Daria and Jane ripped on people and society for various reasons.

It may have been too mean in the eyes of MTV. Still, Daria and Jane are at their best as good friends who are alienated from the normies in the midst of wealth and they are a bit jaded, cynical and mean because of it. (Which they would be in real life.)

Tom is a bit too chill/nice to really fit in and it would have been fun if he was more "alive."

I wouldn't go so far to say he is a bad character, just that there was more that could have been done with him.

It really sucks that he broke up Daria and Jane's friendship but the show was getting lame anyway by the time he showed up. No harm, no foul.

Kevin was... there's no nice way to put it: he *was* an idiot and incredibly short-sighted. This isn't to say he was a truly bad person, because he wasn't, and his upbringing certainly had a hand in it, but he was coasting through high school, too stupid to realize he had to put in effort in anything except sports to get anything out of it (like, say, graduating.) He was friendly and amiable, but not capable of realizing his ignorance was a pain in the ass to deal with, especially by the faculty.

I can't recall Daria being 'vicious' to Brittany (though Jodie did snap at her after she and Daria went to that snooty prep school for a day) and wasn't above teasing her a few times with advice she was sure to take/interpret the wrong way, but that was hardly a personal thing.

Jodie and Mac are even worse for lack of development. They are a case of "Yeah, they definitely just threw these two in to have some diversity." Tom is just there to be the love interest of Jane and then Daria.

The Asian principle feels a lot like that too but at least provides some great comic relief once in a while with her schemes.

Jodie's all about real shit black kids in the suburbs deal with, the pressure to preform not just to equal their parents's successes but to somehow even out the score of their entire ethnicity. Its a cool story hook and while the show didn't do as much with it as it could, I like that they had the guts to talk about it.

Mack is the definition of a safe character, yeah, though Kevin needs a straight man so there is that.

Like you know minorities do live in the burbs, right. Its not all white people everywhere; Lawndale's in Maryland, I think, I'm not really sure where you get the idea that two black kids is so out there it breaks story cohesion.
