I've been running a very small game using the Battle Century G system based loosely on IDWverse. Its about a team of misfits rookies assembled by Prowl to be his C-team, led by a burnt out Prime knock off named Thundercrash (he's a minor homage to Exkaiser and J-Decker) They've gotten themselves stranded on a barren Mad Max planet that was wiped by the Decepticons and now both sides are fighting over a macguffin left behind by Shockwave. Not gonna comment on Scott one way or another, but the reason no one complained about Costa until his interview was because at that point IDW TF comics were so boring and bad most people had already given up on them completely and no one was left to actively complain. I remember people being interested in AHM (some liked it, some hated it) and spotlights, but Costa actually actively killed off most of the TF comic fandom, and everyone was just sticking to Prime. You should have seen how amazed people were by the first few issues of MTMTE. I remember at the time that I was so disillusioned by TF comics at that point, it wasn't until I saw people talking about MTMTE for about three issues that I finally gave it a chance (and was amazed at how the characters were actually characters and not dull undefined mouthpieces).

The dynamic is different now since if you like one author you have to worry about what the others are doing even if you don't like them, since they all write in the same canon.

IDW had been a mess of poor writing and inconsistent plots, so much so they've been struggling to course correct a lot of it or at least attempt to explain. Starting with RID and MTMTE, after Death of Optimus Prime, there was a rather massive shift in IDW. A divergence from the normal status quo of Autobots vs Decepticons into something different for all of them. I don't mind characters acting differently if something interesting happens from it.

You can argue whether or not anything interesting came from it and find people have different opinions on the matter. At the very least they have attempted to couch the changes as developmental. Rodimus wants to feel important, like he's spearheading something truly game changing, so he embarks on a quest. But his excess of personality gets in his way. Soundwave is disillusioned after their latest defeat and Megatron's defection and wants to start his own Decepticon commune where they can live as true Decepticons based on Megatron's initial idealism and free of any Prime or follower of a Prime. Prowl is a bit of a traditional mess. Fans came to enjoy his scheming so that came back. His time with Spike is described as him trying to trust people again and follow a gentler path but Spike's betrayal sent him back over the deep end. He's been struggling with his own personality issues ever since, not helped by the number of direct attacks to his psyche he's suffered. Whether this newest meeting with the Wreckers will temper him or not, well, I doubt it. At most he'll probably gain some followers. Impactor seems ready to do anything shady as long as he thinks it's for the greater good, like a true Wrecker.

Catching up with RID, I have to say it's nice to see (and hear) Ratchet again (also Vehicons!). His story about being banished was odd. Fitting of IDW with a group that blames Optimus, still how did the others manage to lose track of each other to the extent that Ratchet could get kicked offworld. And BB, working security, never heard of this anti-Optimus faction that could boss Ratchet around, or imprison him. Odd that Ratchet meekly took it and didn't just turn around from his "mission" to find a better group.

Comics companies love catering to the Tumblr crowd right now, because they fucking love paying for comics and supporting the artists. Who is this us? I'm enjoying the comics well enough and I don't mind Windblade as a character. The comic wasn't that bad.

Seriously if bland or milquetoast is the worst insult people can throw at it boo fucking hoo, we've seen far worse in this fandom. People seem to be looking for problems at this point. Her dinobot comic wasn't great, most of her writing isn't, but it is serviceable enough and hasn't actually caused any huge fuckups I'm aware of.

You know what the far worse threat is in IDW right now? These events they keep shoving down our throats which are disrupting the existing plotlines. That's actually fucking up characterization and development because they keep having to drop whatever they're doing and go off on Hasbro mandated tangents.
