I totally forgot this movie was coming out.
Why has marketing for this movie been so bad?
>>
This will be much better than BvS and CW.

Calling it now.
>>
>>82607916
It's presumably still the same marketing departement as First Class and Days of Future Past.

The only cool thing they did was this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlPw8NUZuuU
>>
I see shit like this and it seems like a TV movie or something, like someone made an X-Men fan film for YouTube and photoshopped the faces of famous actors on everyone.

And the movies feel that way when you're watching them.
>>
So are those comic likeness uniforms going to be used for the final battle or is it another "movie ends with them truly becoming the x men" shticks?
>>
>>82607945
Both were flawed movies.

Singer has a pretty much flawless track record with these movies so far, so I'd say there is a definite chance.

But then I've been pretty much saying the same thing before, but all the console wars kiddies on this board have largely dismissed the notion.

Im already pissed off that Apocalypse wasn't born blue, I dunno, I usually love the X-Men movies but this one isn't doing anything for me at the minute.
>>
>>82607916
Yeah, i actually don't care about this movie at all. It's weird because when i saw apocalypse at the end of Days of the Future Past i was hyped af but now i don't give a shit.

I agree, but hating on Singer is the bew meme.

To late Bryan Singer
>>
>>82608053
Same. Hopefully it has great word of mouth and it will do fine. It just feels weird that an X-Men movie with Apocalypse has virtually little hype. The only hype I've seen are in the few threads that have been made but even there people don't really seem to care.

Man, I don't know about you but DoFP trailers were hype as fuck. And movie itself turned out to be VERY good. I just couldn't feel the hype for this movie. It can be very good considering Singer is directing it though. I'm a Marvelfag so I want both MCU and Foxverse to succeed. We'll see I guess.

Fuck JLaw
>>
>>82607887
Actual reviews or just fan reviews?
>>
It's weird how the MCU and DCEU movies just build hype on each other but the X-Men films actually suffer from being in close proximity. Like everyone's already blown their load to the pale redhead and now this generic blonde pops on screen. She's pretty but who cares.
>>
>>82608169
People on /co/ did the same thing with DoFP. They said they didn't care and that the movie looked like garbage yet when it came out those same people were saying they always thought that it looked good.

I still fucking hate that Beast design. We will never get a better Beast than Kelsey Grammer
>>
>>82608085
I mean, I can understand actual fans of the comics being mad.

I just read New Mutants #50. The issue starts in a hell dimension, hard cuts to the end of the galaxy, hard cuts to a dystopian future and ends with a battle against a planet destroying techno-goo.

If you primarily like the franchise for these completely ridiculous adventures, I can see how Singer's epics about Charles, Eric, Wolverine and Katniss Everdeen wearing black leather isn't really doing it for you.
>>
>>82608258
I thought everyone made fun of the posters? Because yeah those were pure shit, but the actual trailer was very good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK2zYHWDZKo

The Apocalypse trailer is really bad compared to this.
>>
>>82608258
DoFP trailer was crap tho
>>
I understand that visually Apocalypse is one of the more difficult characters to adapt, and the end result isnt too bad, but I hate how small he is and the old man face
>>
>>82608350
It's kind of like a less jowly variant of "The Creeper"'
>>
>>82608085
I hate the fact that he seems to hate First Class and is going out of his way to kill characters introduced there only because he didn't directed it.
>>
>>82607887
Well the reviews will make or break this movie for me.

I'm kind of burnt out on cape movies for the time being and BvS was a massive disappointment, so if this gets bad reviews too I'm just gonna wait for torrents.
>>
>>82608258
DOFP had the legit worst marketing ever. I was hyped as hell for that movie by virtue of premise alone, but the terrible fucking marketing made me very cautious.

People calling it crap were overshooting their target, but I can't even blame them.

Doubt it, but it doesn't look very good either.

What the fuck is with the awful CGI? I know many cape movies have pretty mediocre CGI, but this is on a whole other level.
>>
>>82608255
And this will still do fine, most likely.

X-Men won people over before the MCU was even conceived and the Spider-Man movies were still just starting out.
So these movies in the eyes of the mainstream actually have something that the MCU doesn't have: A bit of nostalgia.
That can go a long way.
>>
>>82607982

I don't think DoFP is a bad movie by any means but I feel like Vaughn already laid the foundations for a decent X-men trilogy with First Class by introducing the conflict between Charles and Erik with each of them forming their own teams are the end and Mystique sort of caught between the two of them.

The Singer came in (yes I know he wrote First Class) and in wanted to write the wrongs of The Last Stand and Origins, he sort of pulled apart those foundations for his own stand-alone story. Now we're back to square one where we have to wait until the end to get a fully functioning X-men team.
>>
>>82608563
Fox's movies often have bad CGI.

But it has been improving, compare the first trailer to the latest clips.

Every trailer for a Fox-Men movie has been fucking terrible, regardless of the film's actual quality.

At this point Oscar Isaac equals instant watch from me, and the idea of him playing Apoc is doubly hype. I can forgive JLaw being stoned and some weak CGI if everything else holds up.
>>
>>82609162

- let's make this dude the older brother, it will be cool
- totally, dude

>>82609057
Dark may be the wrong word, but it's quite intent on dragging you down emotionally. You basically watch some of your favourite character start to hate each other over some old bullshit.

And on top of that, it's so busy especially with how many characters it has and how it relies on a lot of past continuity.
It actively feels demanding to watch and to keep track of everything.
I've seen several people who were a bit down on the whole MCU and superhero thing after watching Civil War (and Age of Ultron before that).

I actually like the movie over all, even if I don't find it particularly strong. But it's divisive by design, so obviously other people feel different about it.
And I feel like there is a distinct chance right now that Marvel might lose some audience here.

It's being celebrated as one of Marvel's best, if not THE best. I've barely seen naysayer in the non-4chan spheres of entertainment.

And whereas it is divisive in the matters of who you agree with, all sides were presented elegantly and fairly.

And it only really relies on Avengers and Cap movies to function. Everyone else is a novelty.

No, they thought:

- we need a dude with laser powers, let's use Havoc.
- Hey, wait, was this a reboot or a prequel?
- Uh... I don't know or care
- Ok, movie did good, let's do popular X-Men characters again.
- Ok, let's have Cyclops and Jean and Storm
- isn't Havoc supposed to be Cyclops' little brother? Isn't he like 20 years older now?
- Eh, who cares.

Just be glad he wasn't Cyke's dad.

Kinda interested because of Apocalypse, but on the other hand, all the X-men movies to date have been embarrassing garbage. People praised the fuck out of First Class when it came out. I recently saw it on TV and it was just as dumb as the previous attempts, so didn't even bother with Days of Future Past.

I don't know what they do wrong, but the action scenes in X-men flicks just look so blatantly like "actors hanging by wires with CGI effects on top", I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The trailer looked ridiculous.

>>
>>82609568
I feel like, if this franchise just goes on for long enough and cape movies as a genre don't collapse soon, they'll branch out into more fun stuff like that New Mutants movie they are planning.

I can't really see them doing a fully down-to-earth take on New Mutants without it sucking. Deadpool sequels might also be cool if Fox just keeps their fucking paws off these movies.
>>
>>82609664

I liked the comics. I liked X-men as characters way better than the Avengers, really. But the movies just fail to grasp any of that intrigue.
>>
>>82609716
But does Fox know how to do anything besides gritty/down-to-earth with the X-Men? Signs point to no.
>>
Why are there so many X-Men movies? Do they make money? Do normies even like X-men?
>>

>Why are there so many X-Men movies? Do they make money?
Yes. Not Avengers level, but they always made a profit.

The franchise was pretty mainstream when it, Spider-Man and Batman were pretty much the only cape movies in cinema.

Avengers and Thor 1 are prime examples of this. Everyone loved these movies when they came out and now they are largely derided.

let the CGI team finish their work, then rile on it. Trailer CGI is almost never finished. I'm not saying that it must look great in the final product, but I'm saying you should wait for the finished product first.
>>
>>82610674
Why?

I don't understand why there's been a 10 year jump between movies. Won't Havok be around 40 in Apocalypse yet the actors still looks in his 20s. And even if they use the 'mutants age slow', that doesn't explain why Moira doesn't look a day older than she did in First Class.
>>
>>82611400
Because it's sweet nostalgia dosh.
Anyway, the first x-men movie starts at the end of 90s, so in many ways going back to the present...

However, that would mean that the next movie after the next movie will be set in 00s. Maybe something morrisonesque?
>>
>>82611400
They've made them subtly older, added a few wrinklers, a bit of grey hair.

That's as much as they're going to go, ALTHOUGH you can argue that Havok was like 16 in 1962, which would make him 26 in 72 and 36 now.

You know, come to think of it, the trailers didn't have a lot of dialogue or emotional stuff in them. It was mostly just "i'ma destroy everything", "sooo much power", "you're X-Men, fucking stop him".

If that's really absolutely all this movie has, then yeah, I can see how that would be a massive fucking let down compared to previous movies. Especially considering that Brian Singer is pretty shit at just doing basic soap opera. It was always about the plot first with characters coming second. If their script really is that fucking straight forward, I can see this movie being pretty dull.

Still, it doesn't sound like it's a pain to watch. Just a generic cape action movie. With how oversaturated the market is, that isn't really enough anymore.
But then I feel like most Marvel movies would be judged much harsher if they released in 2016.

>There are huge nits to pick elsewhere. Like Jurassic World last year, ultimate responsibility for releasing this titan actually lies with one of our ostensible heroes, although no-one ever acknowledges it. And the appalling climax of the film, when whole cities are blasted to swirling, bloodless CG dust and their populations apparently vaporised, results in the death of millions of people who don’t warrant so much as a momentary look of horror. In a film that makes a point of recalling the Holocaust, that shows spectacularly bad taste.

>Compared to the energetic, bold Days Of Future Past, it all seems so leaden. How many times can Professor Xavier remind us that there is good in Magneto — by now a mass-murderer several times over — before one of them pulls a lightsaber? How many overly familiar exhortations to heroism can Mystique really deliver and expect to be taken seriously? And did they need to replay entire scenes we’ve seen multiple times before? Aside from a few moments with Nightcrawler — in his achingly perfect Thriller jacket and Flock Of Seagulls hair — there’s no levity here, no tonal variation. The more the film harks back to other X-instalments, the more you’ll wish you were watching those instead.

The reviewer liked Cyclops and Storm, but the latter got little to do. And everyone suffers from bad JLaw.

To be honest, that does sound pretty bad. Something like that needs to be more impactful.

It's a big problem I had with the Force Awakens, actually; the Starkiller Base destroying 5 planets doesn't really sink in because it's just this really quick CGI sequence.

It'll be in for a rough time. Say what you will about Snyder, but he has a very unique visual style that appeals to some people and is tailor made to be at the very least very visually pleasing to watch in the theaters in full IMAX. DC movies also tend to have a very large and hardcore fanbase that will flock to each movie. The X-Men movies, while profitable, have never really had the financial success of either the MCU or DC movies. The only ones that opened to over $100mil in the US is Deadpool and Last Stand. If Deadpool wasn't so successful, this could really hurt the franchise at Fox. We're likely looking at another sub-$100mil opening, possibly just 1/3rd of the opening weekends of both BvS and CW.

http://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/x-men-apocalypse-review-jennifer-lawrence-michael-fassbender-oscar-isaac-1201768577/

>Despite a handful of references to President Reagan and the Cold War, “Apocalypse” steers clear of ’80s politics, and instead leans on familiar pop culture references (“Knight Rider,” a Ms. Pac-Man arcade game) and smartly utilized contempo music cues. Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen” scores a wounded Angel’s rebirth via Apocalypse, and Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” accompanies an elaborate sequence of Quicksilver slowing down time to rescue Professor X’s students from an explosion. (It’s meant to outdo the “Time in a Bottle” sequence from “Future Past” but only reinforces what an ingenious and singular way Singer found to demonstrate Quicksilver’s power the first time around.)

>The back-and-forth between Xavier (in the “mutants and humans can live together” camp) and Magneto (in the “mutants and humans can never live together” camp) has grown increasingly tired over six films, even if we’re now witnessing a midpoint in their relationship. Similarly, Raven’s mixed feelings about becoming a role model for mutants everywhere after saving the president in “Future Past” is ho-hum stuff several notches below Lawrence’s formidable skill level.

>Although the “X-Men” ensembles are usually large, there are simply too many characters for the action-heavy “Apocalypse” to properly juggle. It’s easy to forget even McAvoy or Fassbender when they’re off screen for too long, and the film functions best when it lets the fresh young trio of Sheridan, Turner and Smit-McPhee take center stage. Still, it’s Peters who emerges as the cast standout in just a handful of scenes, by bringing an offbeat sensibility to a production that otherwise plays campy cartoon material a little too straight.

Singer tried to recapture Quicksilver's DOFP scene, but falls short. The new characters are done well, but there just isn't enough time for everybody to shine.

Part of this is found in the X-men having their comic line slashed to shit in response to Disney / Marvel not having the movie rights. It's kind of hard to hype a super hero movie when the comic base for them almost no longer exists.

It's because of this I'm completely apathetic about seeing the film. Russos knocked it out of the park with Winter Soldier & Civil War. Unless new super hero films gets amazing reviews I'm not gonna shell out cash for them.

Exactly. In ANH, the Death Star destroys Alderaan, which is established as Leia's homeworld. We don't need to see a shot from the surface, because the horror is implicitly clear from Leia's reactions and her embedded connection to the planet.

In TFA, it's a group of planets that have no connection to any of the main characters, we just know that it's 'the Republic'. We don't get any scenes relating to those planets beyond the scene of their destruction.

>There is a scene in the 80’s set X-Men: Apocalypse where a young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) exit a showing of Return of the Jedi and argue the merits of the various Star Wars films. The participants discuss “Empire Strikes Back was better” versus “Star Wars started it all” before coming to a consensus that the third films always stink. It’s intended as a jab at X-Men: The Last Stand, but it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Bryan Singer’s would-be trilogy capper is a shocking miss. It is a lifeless and hollow shell of a picture, lacking exciting action, strong character interplay, or compelling storytelling. It is the nadir of the franchise, determined to make you apologize for every mean thing you’ve ever said about Brett Ratner’s rushed X-Men trilogy capper a decade ago. X-Men: The Last Stand is X2: X-Men United compared to X-Men: Apocalypse.

It seems like the movie not only does sections of recruiting, but to also give those new characters some time to develop. The movie also wants to move its main plot forward and to bring to a close the arcs of Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique, leaving Beast as the guy who's just there. The movie wants to do so much for this movie, past movies, and future movies that it is just too much.

The main complaints against this film seem to be:
1. Singer is harping on the same Prof X save Magneto's soul that has been the theme of ALL the X-Men movies.
2. That a lot of talent was wasted being little more than mannequins modeling X-Men costumes (again)
3. That while the Holocaust is played for dramatic impact (yet a third time), the massive death and destruction wreaked in the film is shrugged at with indifference.

Nowhere have I read that "it needed more comedy". Characterization, yes, comedy no.

That joke doesn't even make sense.

How many trilogies with bad third parts even existed before Return of the Jedi? I can't think of any, let alone enough for that to have been a rule back then. I didn't hear people start saying "the third movie always sucks" until the late 2000s/early 2010s.

>It’s not that X-Men: Apocalypse is itself a quiet film. In some ways, it’s brasher, louder, and more cartoonish than any comic-book flick in recent memory. (Just think, while everyone else tries to make their heroes’ costumes darker, more au courant, more bad-ass, Apocalypse, set in the 1980s, has the gall to let one character sport a Michael Jackson "Thriller" jacket throughout.)

So where is this disconnect coming from that Hollywood is so misjudging what people want from Capefilms?
Is it just having the wrong people in charge?
People have complained about Marvel's "film by committee" approach, but they're still consistent and generally above average movies.
While Ryan Reynolds basically forced Fox into making Deadpool and having most of the control between him and the director.
Are Singer and Snyder just the wrong people to be making these movies, or is there something more to it than that?
