Good evening owls of /co/,

what will blow up tonight?
>>
>>82560323
anyone got get some FCBD swag?

anyone see someone traumatized by the CW2 freebie?
>>
>>82560363
when I go to my LCS on FCBD, I never pick up any freebies
>>
>>82560363
I haven't actually

I think people got most of their anger out a couple weeks ago when it was leaked

But maybe there's some rage I haven't found on twitter
>>
>>82560423
I never do either because honestly, I don't need more stuff and it's mostly stuff I'm not really into

Eiling's such a prick
>>
>>82560323
Hello Storyteller.

Looks like he didn't quite explode this time.
>>
>>82560363
Nah, FCBD doesn't really happen where I am. I would have liked to pick up the Rom, Space-Knight thing maybe.
>>
>>82560458
>>
>>82560494
so how are you owls today? I painted a chest of drawers.
>>
>>82560363
The only times I've gone to FCBD have been on accident when I went to pick up my normal pull and it happened to be the right day.

I usually love free shit. I don't know why this doesn't do it for me.
>>
>>82560521
>old and busted vs. new hotness
>>
Hey, look who's in Jessica and Simon's book.
>>82537976

>>82560458
Seriously, what is this dude's problem?
>>
>>82560521
>canadian wildfires completely destroyed the air quality all day, full-beijing
>live nowhere near canada
>>
>>82560521

rereading Squad trades and getting mad at how good it is. Ostrander man.
>>
>>82560552
I really want Simon and Jessica's book to be good, but Humphries...
>>
>>82560521
Clayface was revealed for Gotham.

What a delightful show.
>>
>>82560423
>>82560458
>>82560540
Pick up Stuff of Legend, niggas.
>>
>>82560521
I had tons of stuff planned today that I just didn't do, a combination of staying out way too late and the webcomics thread on the board making me catch up on a bunch of shit I used to follow.
>>
>>82560521
I'm literally running out of space with all these X-Men comics, so even though I was originally planning to keep the collection just because, I'm gonna have to nuke it.
>>
>>82560593
Gotham without Batman is actually pretty interesting and an elseworld I would like to see currently in maybe a short limited series DESU.

>>82560573
It really is so good. I can't see Rob Williams' Suicide Squad coming off in the vein of Ostrander, but I wish someone these days would try to replicate what he did.
>>
>>82560521
>So how are you owls today?
Fine. Although... it's almost too stupid to explain, I had a dream where I was playing this video game that was like a mashup of Kingdom Hearts and Mario Party.

I don't even fucking know. It looked kinda fun though.
>>
>>82560640
Ah, dude! That's some crazy shit.
>>
>>82560655
I once had a dream I was watching a show I had created about a family of suburban worms on the Moon.

>>82560645
It really is.
This entire season had been amped up.
>>
>>82560645
>Rob Williams' Suicide Squad
Read this as Robin Williams' Suicide Squad.
>>
>>82560655
It's only a matter of time before Disney buys everything and delivers that game to you.
>>
>>82560560
Oh man, that is some horrible shit up there

>>82560573
Heeeey, maybe we could mix some Squad into this, Ostrander writes some issues late in this run (and you WILL see THE WALL here)
>>
>>82560690
That's a baaad joke, but it makes me imagine like Patch Adams replacing the Wall.
>>
>>82560698
When Disney buys everything, the only Chinese character on Earth is going to be Mulan.
>>
>>82560704
Wasn't this part of the Janus Directive crossover?
>>
>>82560521
I'm about to start reading Luke Cage's 90's solo.
It looks like it's going to be 90's as fuck.

>>
>>82560672
I know! And the worst part is, I downloaded even more comics today! Byrne's Hidden Years and Parker's First Class for anyone who's curious.
>>
>>82560730
At least it's actually in the 90s and not 20 years later e.g. the Thunderbolts

>>82560722
I'm pretty okay with Mulan.
>>
>>82560704

The trade has an annual I hadn't read with a Waller back up that's got Giffen on art. I was so happy
>>
>>82560729
yes it was
>>
>>82560521
Did you do a good job? Was it like a restoration or just some decorating?
>>
>>82560521
I am worried I've got a cold or something, I feel way too listless and tired
>>
>>82560758
How much space does it all take up in total?
>>
>>82560774
>>82560763
the one single Squad issue I own in floppy is the Doom Patrol one-shot crossover

>>82560785
I think I did a pretty good job, although I'm gonna do another coat tomorrow. It was grandmama's, and good wood, so I stripped off the old peeling paint and redid it with a DIY chalk paint style
>>
>>82560816
WHOOPS SORRY page 9 right here
>>
>>82560704
>your step-father made sure all photos of your birth father were destroyed
Eiling's dickery is just becoming comical now.

>>82560698
I dunno, I think I might almost be okay with that. The gameplay looked fun and the story seemed interesting-ish. The main character's family was possessed by like, voodoo demons or something, and she had to beat them one by one.

Dreams always seem simultaneously coherent and nonsensical.
>>
>>82560840
and now page 11
>>
>>82560806
167 GB, 5760 archives in total, and that includes some trades, so that's over 5760 issues.

That sounds pretty good! I'm the messiest guy with stuff like that, I'm fine taking stuff apart or putting it together but when it comes to painting I inevitably fuck up and ruin my clothes/the carpet/the cat.
>>
>>82560914
that's a fucking lot of comics

>>82560915
I'll post a picture when I get it all the way done

I'm pretty anal retentive about details, so I'm never really happy but it's usually a reasonably decent job
>>
>>82560914
That is some fucking commitment dude.

>>82560914
Wow

>>
>>82560760
>I'm pretty okay with Mulan.
I'm really surprised there aren't any Mulan comics. But then, maybe that's a good thing, since they'd inevitably go the generic "ME WARRIOR BLOOD RAARGH KILL" route.

>>82560816
I dunno, Nate. That seemed a bit much.
>>
>>82561000

Almost never. Not to get too serious here, but I think the prevalence of evil scientists in fiction is a result of the influence of anti-intellectualism. There are still a lot of people who are straight up against scientific research and progress, and who irrationally fear new technology.

In kinda a bad mood cause the local tea store apparently closed and I couldn't grab the gift I wanted for Mother's Day.

Also- Oh, hey, an Atomic Knight.

Don't worry, I have more than enough space for everything, especially since I purposefully left out some stuff like First X-Men and Wolverines.

Consider cheap usb drives? You can get like 16 gig ones for pretty cheap.

OH! Is Firestorm going to be the rival character? Rivals are the best thing. Ronnie's not quite Gary Oak though, more like Pantyhose Taro.

You can get cheap external drives, both portable and plugged, refurbished direct from a reputable source. I have an older iMac I like to keep that I mainly use as an office stereo (because great speakers) so I needed a Firewire that was also USB 3.0. I got a 1TB LaCie from the manufacturer (so full warranty) refurb for $99 (they retail for $249 - 299+ at the time).

I've seen inexpensive ones on Other World Computing and there are other reputable sites, or you can stick with Amazon. A friend bought me my 2TB plugged that is where I keep my comic horde for $150 or so, from them. It's an Iomega.
>>
>>82561105
Babylon you sad, sad Smithers.

BTW, is Babylon supposed to be a black guy? Or some purple dude Megala Scienced into a weird skin tone?
>>
>>82561793
>I'm kind of a sucker for this whole "reconnecting with your adult kids" story
It's a very real premise, and thus easy to get invested in.

I kinda feel like superhero comics have really lost the urban fantasy feel they once had. It'd be nice if more cape stories were about dealing with more grounded situations rather than fight yet another apocalyptic giant dude.
>>
>>82561930
>>82561952
Say, speaking of computer speakers, mine are 1) over a decade old 2) one fell prey to Kid Flash and keeps falling apart. Any general recs for something good and small to plug into a PC? Do they make 'em wireless yet?
>>
>>82561964
It all harkens back to the death of the supporting cast. Now it's all about the latest summer blockbuster event or whatever. In a way, superhero comic books have definitely regressed.
>>
>>82561960
Black dude I think but subject to the indignities of original and re-flat coloring

>>82561964
There's a full texture to these stories, in part because they're not decompressed and a lot of detail goes into each issue
>>
>>82562038
Everyone should be forced to write 4 to 8 page stories down to a fine art until they're allowed to tackle 20 page ones.
>>
>>82562055
RAINBOW RAIDER~

>I got a 1TB LaCie from the manufacturer (so full warranty) refurb for $99 (they retail for $249 - 299+ at the time).

Brand new is $99 these days. At least, my WD passport harddrives were.

And editors should say "Not enough happens in this story, make it happen without making the artist do twice the work"
>>
>>82561227
I would put money on Eiling having one of Margaret's boyfriend murdered in high school.
>>
>>82562002
You can probably get wireless, but corded should be $30 or less. Logitech is standard, but Amazon sells their house brand for like $14.

>>
>>82561318
More storage is never a bad idea, X-Anon. Especially if you're still in school, you really want to back up everything. One spilled bong and you could be fucked hard on a semester worth of work.
>>
>>82562038
I hate to sound old, but comics used to be more complex and dealt with actual issues, which fit with the idea of extraordinary people doing what they feel is right. Now things have become far too basic, and boil down to "beat up bad guy".

>>82562055
>There's a full texture to these stories, in part because they're not decompressed and a lot of detail goes into each issue
Decompression was a mistake. Or at least, the type of decompression that's common now. You'd think longer stories would mean more character development and deeper exploration of ideas, but no. It's all just filler.
>>
>>82562195
>>
>>82562137
Harking back to a week or two ago: That's my concrete criticism about Hellcat, there's an entire issue covering about ten minutes of real time, and most of the ten minutes are characters passively waiting for something to happen because the focus is on the group who's captive.

You have to be a master to make that work, and it didn't work. It's not a comic where you get your value in that $4.
>>
>>82562101
Do any writers workshops offer up lessons in short story writing? That really should be a thing.
>>
>>82562226
>You'd think longer stories would mean more character development and deeper exploration of ideas, but no. It's all just filler.

I hate how true this is. And it's not just capeshit at this point. I don't know how you fix it.
>>
>>82561964
They had problems back in the day too, though. Reading the Dazzler storytimes, I kept getting disappointed at how they kept dragging her into superhero fights even though the heart of the comic was her career and relationships.
>>
>>82562137
Submissions guidance for 2000AD:
>"An excellent way to practise script writing is to take a 24-page American comic, and re-write it so you can tell the same story in four pages."
>>
>>82562226
>Decompression was a mistake. Or at least, the type of decompression that's common now. You'd think longer stories would mean more character development and deeper exploration of ideas, but no. It's all just filler.

It doesn't help that Bendis was one of the early pioneers, and is still going strong using the same damn style.
>>
>>82562252
You know, I think DeMatteis offers writing workshops, and he's certainly written enough short stories in his time to know how to do it.

>>82562271
You have to have the education in how and the editorial to enforce it

>>82562236
>passively waiting for something to happen
ugh ugh ugh

>>82562310
NICE
>>
>>82562271
This is one of my main concerns with branching out to full OGN releases. I don't want to read 100 pages that amount to nothing but building up to another volume.
>>
>>82562101
At least DC has had some newer writers that did a story in the Vertigo Quarterly or one of their digital anthologies first before putting them on minis and ongoings. Chu and King were two of those
>>
>>82561538
>Remember when they tried to bring back the Atomic Knights in Battle for Bludhaven? That was a thing.

Battle for Bludhaven was unforgivably shit, and those Atomic Knights disappeared almost immediately for a reason.

Man. DC has just hosing walls in diarrhea for ages, haven't they?

>>82562389
eh, every company has the hidden and lost gems that they've bungled using

Opinion of unknown popularity: Ronnie/Jason is a fine Firestorm but it also misses some of the "older dude has to put up with young idiot's shit" dynamic that can be amusing as hell, get off my lawn you goddamn kids

>>82562431
is that how that reads?
>>
>>82562271
One thing that might help is to stop trying to make every single fucking storyline into an "epic". Not everything needs to be worldbreaking, you can have low-key shit too.

>>82562317
Bendis' problem is that he tries to insert character development and interactions in his stories, but he doesn't understand how people work. Everyone he writes is an annoying, immature douchebag.
>>
>>82562476
>>
>>82562236
It's really interesting to think about how easy or hard it is to pare down a particular comics issue. Right now stuff like Providence, or even The Fix, is fairly dense and it'd be difficult to hit all the notes in an issue while taking a big cut in pages. But other stuff, it's easy. And there are comics that could be cut down but use their space to good effect, like Omega Men. The pauses and spaces in that are part of the work.
>>
>>82562499
>>
>>82562476
Wet Moon is so obviously Not For Me that I don't feel completely comfortable criticizing it, but yeah. The first four volumes have very little happen beyond an inching in and hinting towards relationships. It's an extremely slow comic.
>>
>>82562520
new Fix next week

I appreciate how much work Lieber puts in on each issue in the service of comics-style funny storytelling.

Reading Tom Taylor's Stuck On Namek epic was so grinding because each issue had so many clear red pen places in it, even allowing space for Nicola's glorious asses
>>
>>82562476
>>82562499
Yay! Ronnie totally IS the rival.

>>82562389
I don't really understand why Battle for Bludhaven exists in the first place. Nightwing fans must've been fucking pissed too.

>>82562696

>>82562655
I think it's been retired by the author now but I probably would have kept reading it if not.

Even with slow pacing and a teeth-grinding cast there's something appealing about it featuring a great variety of body types that is nonetheless very clearly driven by the artist's fetishes and preference. That's a hell of a lot more interesting than the extremely safe Jem comic. I like a creator who wears their heart on their sleeve sometimes.
>>
>>82562226
>I hate to sound old, but comics used to be more complex and dealt with actual issues, which fit with the idea of extraordinary people doing what they feel is right. Now things have become far too basic, and boil down to "beat up bad guy".

The shift in writing away from wordiness and individual issue stories from the 2000s killed a lot of the room they used to have to build supporting characters and themes and actual issues.

When you're writing a comic like 1/6th of a movie script, and for as many full page or even two page spreads as possible, there's just less room for story.

>I hope so! >: Ronnie/Jason is a fine Firestorm

It was good before Blackest Night, okayish after (because killing Gehenna was ugly forced drama) and very badly written out of the gate in New52, but I only looked at like the first or two of that because it was pretty famously bad.

IMO the best period of JasonStorm was when he could Matrix with whoever was available. It made for some fun mixes.

So, let's review.

Classic villain Dr. Spectro is an in-universe fictional character made up by the government as part of Captain Atom's cover story. So after figuring out the truth, this guy, who may or may not be the Rainbow Raider(?) decides to become the real Dr. Spectro to claim the trademark.

I think it was in a CBR article or something where the editor and the artist and Hopeless were all "We're trying to do this respectfully and we listen to our wives and we're all dads so it's meaningful to us" and it still made me mad
>>
>>82564653
Man, I'm not going to say he's putting words in his wife's mouth, but I would not be surprised if he's profoundly more hyped about it than she is.
>>
>>82564740
Also there are already heroes and characters who are mothers but they shittily saddled a character who didn't want one with one just cause, which is enough reason to get annoyed
>>
>>82564559
Omega Men #9 is also very good.

>>
>>82561015
the OG, Frankenstein was pretty good hearted, he just had too much to prove and wasn't the best "father" to his creation.

It's far easier to make said mad scientist an asshole or too deluded to behave humanely, because he's well...mad.
The ones that do often give their lives trying to save the world from the product of their research. Which is what happened to the Movie version of Frankenstein. It's a lot rarer than the asshole Mad Scientists though.

This one seems even dumber in retrospect because there was literally no actual reason behind Jess changing her mind

>That is a complicated question and the answer will play a big role in the series. Jess doesn't particularly like children. She's made that pretty clear in the past. She hasn't been waiting around for the right guy to settle down and have a family. That's never been part of her plan. All of this is new uncharted ground for her and a big life changing business. It's not a trick or a gimmick. It's a story.

>My own life pretty clearly inspired this pitch. My wife and I had our first kids (twin boys) last year after ten years of marriage (we got married at 23). For nine of those 10 years, neither one of us planned on having children. I never wanted kids. The tenth year was a gonzo emotional rollercoaster that changed every single thing in our world.

>I won't get into it here but I very much relate to Jessica's stance on children. There are big, strong, deep-rooted reasons why she never wanted to be a parent. I understand that. I lived that. Then one day everything changed. Jess seemed like the perfect character for this story.
>>
>>82564696
>Actually, if these guys are all married, shouldn't they know better?
No? Do you know so many married men who have thoughtful and grounded opinions about pregnancy? Who aren't gynecologists?
>>
>>82564595
It's really dumb and irresponsible for a cape who got their earlier stories out with some more adult spy stuff.
>>
>>82564688
>40+ woman

Pfft! Even Lady Quark and Amanda Waller were eventually aged down.
>>
>>82564559
The beginning of Grayson is probably the most number of one and dones in one book that I can remember as of late. There were like 5 or 6 in a row

And even then they all connect to make a bigger story arc in the last 3 or so issues
>>
I do have a sadistic impulse in me that wants that baby to get some COMIC BOOKS shock ending just to spite Hopeless for Avengers Arena.

Actually, that would be hilarious to read, but the point is that his logic is fucked.

That made me so mad, they had some dude at the very beginning say "The moral of this story is you shouldn't play God, no there's no other possible interpretation. "

only Black Widow is allowed to be female and do that at Marvel, now

Captain Atom is so much more appropriate for all of these many 'but Superman is too dangerous! he's a weapon!' takes the big guy gets.

Wait. How the fuck old is Jessica Drew supposed to be? I always figured she was at least in her 30s.

Also, fuck them for screwing up Julia Carpenter, who was always a Spider-Mom. And for less asinine reasons.

Didn't some representative get reprimanded or something for daring to say "vagina" during a hearing regarding birth control?

I know nothing about Movie Hawkeye but I'm really saddened by Sadsack Loser Comics Hawkeye in the way that he's been made to be.
>>
>>82564944
I actually really liked issue 1 but the funeral scene in issue 2 was kind of shitty and while the action once she was caught was pretty good (I love the page where she takes a pistol from one of her captors) it's revisiting a bunch of shit I'm not that interested in with BW and the writing isn't so great.

I don't know what the BW comic I'd want right now would be. Either some super fast-paced spy thing that doesn't have to revisit her PTSD origins or maybe like, a Spy Academy? Natasha and Mockingbird run a black ops cape team where Bucky is field leader (and they embarrass the hell out of him, he and Nat occasionally do some hard drinking to get through a bad night, but no romantic set-up with either) and they take on a bunch of spy-ish young heroes and train them to be hardcore. Like say Cloud 9? Prodigy? Heroes suited to a spy role.

I lost my shit when he started making fun of Tony being a FUTURIST like have the Russos been lurking

>>82561405
Yeah, it's kind of...off. My understanding is largely based on the more unnerving scenes in "A Beautiful Mind"

Though the idea of a straight up unmedicated Schizophrenic has the potential to be really interesting, a good combination of dangerous and pitiable as his mind erodes.
