Topsiders story really don't fuck around!
So I assume doc will lose consciousness and transform after blacking out.
>>
>>82524424
>Mutant Doc uses a cane

Literally Dr. House
>>
>>82524424

> killing people on plain view

They didn't even bother to be subtle.
>>
Aaron needs to brush up on his firearms knowledge.

But as the top comment notes, this is probably where Doc mutates. It ties things neatly together: Needing to be unconscious to become a cute toon animal, and the increased healing rate that anthro's seem to possess. As a human being, a shot like that is very likely to be lethal without treatment. Perforated intestine or kidney.
>>
>>82524476
I think this might explain how he mutated (knocked out from the bullet shot).
>>
>>82524493
They're not Topsiders, they're APEX employees
>>
This'll be interesting. No witnesses, and we'll perhaps learn if mutation can cure gutshotitis.

I wonder if it's gonna turn out that Holly pulled herself together long enough to break them both out of wherever they end up, rather than Doc rescuing Holly? She can do impressive things when pushed, just ask Jim and Chic. Maybe she won't even be captured, but will hitch a ride in an unseen spot on the van to a place where she'll learn what the people in biosuits do with mutants...
>>
>>82524424
Doc's gonna mutate, him and Holly are carted off to Pep Stadium

We get to see Walt save everybody, thus giving him a nice re-introduction for his upcoming arc.

Calling it.
>>
>>82524522
Have we ever seen someone in those suits do anything subtle?
>>
>>82524424
This rescue doesn't seem to be going too well.
>>
>>82524476
What if he dies next page and we suddenly find the narrator of this particular ditto-story isn't entirely truthful?
>>
Remember how people were commenting on where the last buddibomb was? I think it's gonna be used on them
>>
>>82524672
>implying it wont deactivate near APEX company assets
>>
>>82524570

Milk Trail shows otherwise.
>>
>>82524424
Wow, Apex workers just give a fuck
>>
>>82524746
We know he lives, and that the mutation itself cures cancer
>>
>>82524666
Well, we already knew this stuff was different. That'd be a pretty exciting development, really.
>>
>>82524709
Or more likely any authority figures. Can't have them going for cops and the like.
>>
>>82524746
Meaning it hints at previous experience being confined and tormented? Possibly, in which case we still have the option of her being the one to break them both out, especially if the injury leaves Doc lamed.

I feel we're about to see something reminiscent of the experimentation sequence from Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, complete with escape.

I wonder if Sara was always a complete heartless turbobitch, could mutating into a lizard have magnified that aspect of her personality?
>>

These are supposed to be Holly's memories, but I don't see her around to have actually witnessed this bit.
>>
>>82524849
She's proabibly shaking hiding in a bush somewhere
>>
>>82524849
If it is her memories like we've been lead to believe, then either she can't be in the windowless NDDC van already, or she only heard what happened from within and what we're seeing now is an extrapolation of what she thinks it looked like, in which case it might be somewhat inaccurate.
>>
>>82524875

>could mutating into a lizard have magnified that aspect of her personality?

Definitely. But from what we've seen, the person's own personality remains dominant. Unity just appealed to that topsider part of her. The part that wished she could have just stayed a topsider. At the start, she's reasonable and deferential to her other travelling partners. But we're talking about someone who has lived nearly her entire life as a racial supremacist, but in a submissive role, suddenly being not only the most competent person in the room, but also having that supposed racial supremacy reaffirmed.

Jim was pragmatic. He became a raccoon to save his girlfriend's life. Sarah was oppertunistic. She let her boyfriend turn into a raccoon to save her life.

Whose, then? Only Holly has been present in each and every memory... unless Lyn's behaviour was a misdirection, and Lyn was actually reacting at the original time, to a third person who was present for each scene but who Holly never saw... and who the dittos have edited out and gently guided Wally to take the place of...

Goddamnit, Lyn knew Marx, didn't he? He was haunted by and reacting to Marx - kid-Marx, who is Wally's size - and Wally just thinks ditto-Lyn was conscious...
>>
>>82524845
All topsiders seem pretty rotten people (Jim wasn't exactly a nice guy either). Linda got better, but then she had a slightly more supportive atmosphere that didn't encourage her to remain awful.
>>
>>82525160
Yeah, i really think that Lyn isn't concious but instead he sees someone that for some reason doesn't appears in the flashback. maybe because Holly never see it, is possible that Holly's memories and the mysterious guest are completing each other
>>
>>82525098
Now we need one of Maude on a Vespa saying "Just you and me Mr. Wallenchinsky!"
>>
>>82525193
Topsiders can't afford to be nice guys. For all intents and purposes, Jackrabbit -no matter how much of a cunt he is- is right: They are completely unadapted to life in the new world. There's no way the topsider upper echelons don't know about how you mutate. Flask seemed to know, after all. But it's exactly as she, Jim, and Sarah said. Once you live your life in a sandwich bag for a few years, regaining a normal life at the low, low cost of becoming a cute cartoon doesn't really sound all that bad.

Linda even said the topsiders claimed that is was impossible for what happened to her to happen. And while the Endtowners scoff at beans, Linda ate them up as if they were pure crack cocaine. And she never did tell us what it is the topsiders eat that's so disgusting. These people are being kept stupid and oppressed. It's North Korea up there, but with more impressive technology.
>>
>>82525250
No, a giggling Holly running from Wally in a Hamster Ball.
>>
>>82525418
On it
>>
>>82525244
We're gonna see someone else "reacting" to Wally again soon, only for him to go off-script, step aside, and see that they're still staring at where he was. Or someone's going to actually talk to the person Wally's acting the stand-in for, and we'll see one baffling half of a conversation that hints as to their identity.
>>
>>82524493
Gotta contain the disease since it transmits by exposure.
>>
>>82525294
>regaining a normal life at the low, low cost of becoming a cute cartoon doesn't really sound all that bad.

except when you take into account that cartoon could be anything
>>
>>82525294
do you suppose there is a Topsider group of inquisitors meant to root out dissidence?
>>
>>82525677
Yeah, but realistically speaking, not too many people get fucked over too hard. You have some people who are just a fish or a snake or something, but the vast majority turns into cuddly, little dwarves. Either way, as an unmutated human, you are stuck in a garbage bag for the rest of your life. It's dehumanizing to a much greater degree than being a mutant, in a way.

>>82525720
I don't think they have a need for an internal monitoring agency. But somewhere along the line there's someone in charge who does know how people mutate, who's job doesn't allow him to tell those of lower rank.
>>
>>82525160
On second thought, there's definitely a conscious element taking over certain actors, and Holly hasn't been present for *every* scene.

The waitress in the diner seemed to be pretty directly responsive (meaning it's not just Lyn and we're going to see another avatar of the "Showrunner" soon, assuming they were both the same entity), though the way she emphasised some words suggested a deeper meaning to what she was saying.

>"Oh yes... *all* of our *best* customers pay before eating. In fact, here comes one of our *very* best right now".

Why do I feel like that, coupled with the statement that

>"Management says you paid up front when you came in"

...means that there's a price to partaking of this ditto-vision and they either don't even realise they've paid it, and they're going to find out what it was when it ends... or the price is a past history of trauma and only those with such issues are allowed into these visions?

Or could the vision even be at the behest of I, and as some kind of god of suffering it considers Holly one of its best customers?

Also, the entrance point to the ditto vision had no past-Holly, though it might have been an improvisation made from Wally's memories that acted as an opportunity to arrange the physical positions of the players before the "show" began.
>>
>>82524424
What the hell is their problem?
Shooting people without reason is very rude.
>>
>>82526517
The cop attacked them first.
>>
>>82526842
Yeah, sure dindu nuffin. Heard it all before. Fucking toppers...
>>
>>82526514
>Or could the vision even be at the behest of I, and as some kind of god of suffering it considers Holly one of its best customers?
Seems like "I" has plans for Holly, that's why i believe that she won't die: "I"will never let something happen to his main source of food
>>
>>82526514

>>"Management says you paid up front when you came in"
>>"Oh yes... *all* of our *best* customers pay before eating. In fact, here comes one of our *very* best right now".

One of our very best. One. Not two. Lyn was being specifically excluded from that statement because it really DIDN'T refer to actual food.

Waitress = The dittos, this particular group being large enough to be smart enough to talk and happy to do so.

Lyn = The Management, whatever's controlling the dittos. Cold and standoffish. Can probably move between bodies, can't see any reason it couldn't.

Paid up front when you came in/pay before eating = Either the Dittos or Management took something when they entered the vision...
>>

>Either the Dittos or Management took something when they entered the vision...
Now this could be a reference about how the guy behind this take Holly or maybe also taking Wally's dittos as "payment"
>>
>>82526514
You're really reading too much into this.
>>
>>82527184
Well, Wally's dittos did vanish suddenly. I was under the impression they ran away, but we have seen a ship's computer take them over before, or try to.

I'm willing to bet the ship's computer is involved in this somehow. Remember that gravity adjusted itself for their comfort after a short time inside the ship's cabin. It may be attempting to claim them as crew or something, with Holly as captain (because she entered the vision first), but it doesn't brook any mental instability and is trying to "fix" her...

Here's the thing: Holly and Wally were meant for each other, literally designed for each other by Aaron. They are perfect for each other.

Kirbee is meant to be a stake in that relationship. For all her redeeming qualities, she exists primarily to drive Holly and Wally apart.

The mutant plant in Al and Gustine's arc gave me a few ideas. Namely if plants can mutate, you don't want to be anywhere near a forest that has been hit by the mutagen. And Jim saying that even the Topsiders don't know how far the damage extends adds some credence. I figure all sorts of cards are on the table when you have taking seer-puddles.

I fully agree tho, chances are most of this stuff is invalidated. But hey, it's for fun!
>>
>>82535105

Well I THINK that the mutagen has a touch of supernatural to it. And yeah I think as far as stuff goes if we have anthros, multi-dimensional entities, odd radiations and supernaturals?

You still can make something setting-plausible as long as it's far away from "current events" for it not to affect it that much. It's kinda like Star Wars extended universe stuff - as long as it doesn't poke into the direct fabric of main characters it could be very well canon.
>>

Those are probably armor piercing rounds giving how they don't even punch a hole through them but actually cut.

Given howthey are already in there suits and that they just shot two cops and a doctor I'd guess that the virus is everywhere now. They're already in hell, they just don't know it.
>>
>>82541197

Should I?
>>
>>82524522
No witnesses. Seems they knew what was up the entire time. Perhaps the virus is a weapon of theirs that got "into the wild", and now they're scrambling to try to contain it. Nobody knows what it is, the characters say...seems to me, the more accurate saying would be "Nobody besides the topsiders know what it is". from what I can see.
>>
>>82545272
Striker fired pistols(ex. glocks) don't have hammers. We don't have a close up of the gun being fired so a casing ejection would be easy to miss and Aaron probably didn't feel like drawing that detail.
>>82545567
This is a bit unusual, pistol rounds don't typically have the penetration for a pass-through and the exit wound is pretty tiny.
AP is a reasonable possibility, though. Given how militarized everything is, body armour is probably not uncommon.
>>
>>82525294
We pretty much know they're eating recycled shit with all the waste taken out, yet probably still smells and looks the same, since they lack the resources from nature and artificial colors and such to make it look and smell like real food again.
>>
>>82525849
I'm pretty sure there IS such a group, using the slightest infraction as an excuse to terminate someone for recycling, due to scarce resources. The topsiders more than likely have a SUPER-high amount of paranoia going through their society. Why do you think Jim and Sarah defected? They're in more danger among/from their own society.

Those are not what exit wounds look like, unless you use some sort of "merciful bullet".

I would have preferred to just keep the wounds out of view. Aaron has never had a gore fetish, and I see no reason why he should start now. Or just slather the surfaces and clothing in large amounts of blood. Which is also what happens when you're shot.

Other than that, the guns don't seem to eject casings. That might be because they're advanced Apex handguns, or because he couldn't be arsed to draw proper guns. But it's not as noticable as the puncture-mark exit wounds.

Also, when Flask was running around with that machinegun, its ammo belt was incorrectly placed. When it exploded, I thought for sure that had been intentional. Then it turns out it wasn't. Kind of disappointing.
>>
>>82548096

Look up a little thing called G11. I doubt Aaron knows about it but 4.7mm caseless is a thing.

But I think just Aaron is not that into guns as lets say I am and have an intrinsic need to draw them extra detailed and 100% accurate.
>>
>>82548161
I'm aware of caseless technology, hence me not making much of an issue out of those guns.

Still not as bad as this cyberpunk comic I have lying around where a revolver ejects casings like a semi-auto.

The real food is meant to be a hint that other things were real, too. The buddibombs were real, and like the original set were keyed to Holly (who is trapped in a ditto shell and living out her own memories) and reacting to her as they would have in the original timeline... but when the illusion ends, there's going to be a very threatened-feeling Holly and one buddibomb left over, right on the verge of activating. Wally managing to talk her back from the edge - and her biting back her fear and paranoia and preventing herself from allowing a buddibomb to kill someone else she loves - will be the start of her healing.

That or the buddibomb goes for Wally or one of the others and she jumps on it to stop it from killing them, dying in the process.

Or it's a double fake-out and it when she jumps on it to save the others it turns out that the very last buddibomb *is* actually a ditto illusion, a test in fact.

Or even better, it's fake but the dittos briefly make it look like Holly got blown up, as a prank.

So no matter how the baby was born, it needed nine months, had six, and was therefore seriously premature anyway. Poor little fry probably wouldn't have had a chance even if it was born alive. I respect the man immensely for answering you so eloquently, but PLEASE put some thought into your questions if you are going to ask on behalf of "anon"

Most of the rats. So one or two of them were human, or possibly there's an entire other variety of rats among the Endtown populace that are larger than mice and human-derived, but rats like that simply don't have anything to do with the security team, either by choice or exclusion.

I wonder if the security rats are what you get when something close to a human mutates? Maybe they used to be chimps? Chimps are pretty gung-ho, violent and vicious.
>>
>>82549958
who cares?
>>
>>82550644
Could also be commentary on the learning abilities of rats themselves; they started rats and became 'enlightened' by effect of the virus, because they were already very intelegent. But then, that leaves a lot of questions for normal animals; or members of EndTown that don't recall any memory of their life before.

Not to make it sound like the story's crap (I actually like it)...
We have a world with trillions of mini-pixel mutants being psychic, hivemind, and seeming to be the metagame godmod plot hole solution to everything

Jew Aliens

DISINTIGRATIONS

Axiom Radiation (wut)

An all-knowing Oracle in Endtown

Discount Doctor Who

Yggdrasil-Orb Afterlife?

People managing to alter into miniaturized cartoon animals and somehow keep bodily functions that are more or less 'healthy' and not suffer crap like reduced mental capacity, increased mental capacity, cancer from rapid cell growth, cell destablization, the issue of mass transferance (I.E. Holly was a big human with a fully developed baby, where the hell all that extra Mass go when she turned to a teeny tiny mouse and her baby to a fish?) brain-using technology that seems to involve covering brains in plastic to use them, bio-metal in Topsider Cars, Animal Mutants giving birth to a different species of animal mutant all together frequently, etc etc etc

I think Dog-Rats using guns is the least of the issues with science.

I don't have nearly as much of a problem with them as I do with Marx, but I think Dittos are being used too much throughout the comic. With their telepathy and the ability to morph into solid objects like bridges, I think they're getting a bit... overpowered?

In Metro 2033 something like this would have appeared for a short time once and never showed up again, keeping things mysterious.

Speaking as the one who originally posted the dry-humping thing, it was never intended as a question for Aaron and whoever sent it to him was a complete and utter muppet.

But I wanted to know. You can believe what you want but I really wanted to know just how miserable those mutants really are. As someone who has to work with sick people I find disfunctional bodies truly horrifying. It eases my mind knowing it isn't really that bad.

Hey, people had already asked if Jim had a tiny racoon penis and if Wally had barbs on his dick and I'm pretty sure they did it for fetishistic reasons (as all the fanart proves). He could deal with that.

And if I really didn't care about being nasty and insensitive I could've asked him to be specific about what the main characters do in bed, or something like that. Or what exactly do topsiders like to do when vivisecting stuff.

E-mailed two questions to Aaron, just got a response. Dinosaur mutants confirmed, guys.

Hello Aaron! Wanted to ask two questions, if you don't mind. Found the first one recently and had the other on my mind for a while.

Anyway, sorry if this has been asked before, but someone on /co/ had a thought which I was curious about as well. Is it possible for people to mutate into extinct animals like dinosaurs, sabertooth tigers, mammoths, and so on? Or would that not be possible since they don't exactly have a "cartoon logic" with their animal traits like the other animals that people mutate into, or perhaps because they simply no longer exist to begin with?

Oh, it's quite possible. Hell, Winsor McCay kicked off American animation in a sense with Gertie the dinosaur. I can definitely think of a few bits of cartoon logic applied to the nature of dinosaurs in the Max Fleischer "Stone Age" cartoons.. and later on in The Flintstones ("It's a living!").

*Forgot to greentext to separate text.

>Also, a question that I thought of myself, and that's this woman on bottom right panel on the March 23, 2009 strip (http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2009/03/23) Is she a shark mutant? Forgive me if I recall incorrectly, but you stated that fish mutants always mutate into a regular fish, and the only way a fish-man occurs is if the mutated human is on drugs or semi-conscious.

Fish mutants are anthro fish, which pretty much means "Charlie the Starkist Tuna" with fins that double as hands (although I don't think they'd be able to walk on their tails; my suspension of disbelief has limits). Cooper is a monster/anthro hybrid which means the fish head is a non-sequitur and unique to him. Other hybrids could be different combinations of anthro animal and eldritch horror.

Keep in mind that there are a elements at play here both within the strip and outside the strip. From the inside, this flashback is a visual representation of Holly's mental impressions of what happened and the details are therefore subject to her emotions and fears. The fish baby and Ethel's snake form may not have been as horrifying and more 'cartoony' in nature. Likewise, her impressions of Lyn's mutation were potentially subject to the same factors. However, from the outside, this strip is also a visual representation of a narrative I have in my mind and the manner in which I present these elements on paper is subject to factors such as mood, creative influences, caffeine intake, skill limitations and pure whim, so it's also conceivable that Holly's impressions could be closer to "reality" than what we've seen elsewhere in the strip.

As we're dealing with a classic "unreliable narrator", it should also be left up to question if Holly really did have a fish baby.. and, if not, what exactly did she have in that bathtub.

>As we're dealing with a classic "unreliable narrator", it should also be left up to question if Holly really did have a fish baby.. and, if not, what exactly did she have in that bathtub.

I remember wondering about this, thinking that maybe Ethel looked ultra snakey because she was an earlier mutation or because the cartoon filter had been dropped partially. So even Aaron admits to two options: Anthros look cartoony and Ethel looked more realistic because Holly's memories are distorted, or possibly Ethel was our glimpse into how things really look and anthros, main cast included, are quite possibly more realistic and uncanny-vallyish than we see - something I remember being decried in these threads but which now seems to be a possibility.

Sounds like he's also leaving open other possibilities for the bay, like either what was in the tub was a drug-spawn or even an abomination, and so horrid that Holly has mentally written over it with something slightly more pleasant, or Holly hallucinated the whole fish thing as a side effect of her stress and mutation and, perhaps, drowned her preemie baby in her madness.
>>
>>82574479
>bay
*baby
>>
>>82574479
Sounds like it was mostly just that Ethel scared the shit out of Holly back then, so in this flashback she looked scarier than she really had been to better fit that.
I wonder if she was worried Ethel might turn into another giant tongue centipede at any moment once she realized she was seeing evidence of what she and Lyn were being paid to keep quiet about.
>>
>>82574525
Also I'll admit that the fact that Linda Kowalski called the other anthros "Terrytoons" does seem to suggest that they look cartoony in-universe. But it seems like there's a degree of ambiguity between what's just the "cartoon filter" of Aaron's style and what's actual direct representation.
>>
>>82574300
Interesting, so some things maybe didn't happen as we saw it. And it also leaves in the air the possibility that the anthros aren't that cute as we thought
>>
>>82574619
Perhaps it has to do with fear and stress. Maybe it causes the person to see the mutant as animal, yet if they accept their human/animal mix or remain calm to the mutants, they view the mutants as the cartoony, cute things we previously knew of.

Ech, could also add on to why Topsiders despise mutants, if they saw them all as walking, talking animals on human legs and arms. Lovecraftian horror stuff right there.

Could also be that the spontaneous ejection mangled the baby horribly (imagine that video with the crab and the underwater pipe) and Holly's mind just went "Nope!" and refused to see/remember it that way.
>>
>>82574479
Well, we know Aaron has outright said that the baby mutated when Holly did (while she was asleep, zonked out on vodka), and I'm pretty sure that he's also said that children never become abominations, even if they mutate while awake. So it probably wasn't a human or an abomination. I think there's still a chance it was a half-and-half, though, if that can happen to children (that's probably what the sand tentacle mutant was), and Holly blocked the memory.

Human minds tend to misremember things, force memories conform to internal biases and expectations, blend memories together and even outright forget details. So I'd say all ditto-flashbacks have an element of unreliable narrator.

I do think that the dittos always show what their targets *believe* happened to them, though, which may be more important.
>>
>>82580026
>Holly felt guilty and responsible for everything that happened

>even if that was not the case, she believed it and the dittos responded
>>
>>82580154
Now this put in question: what happened and what not? I think that we only have to trust on the things we saw
>>
>>82580462
Unless it turns out someone who Holly thinks died actually didn't, and they turn up later...
>>
>>82580154
So Holly isn't responsible for anything that happened because we have no proof it did happen.

Does she have a rivalry with the next door T-Rex girl? Nobody wants to stop their arguing and possible cat fights because they're dinosaurs, what can they do to them? And because it might be really cool to watch.
>>
>>82581913
>next door T-Rex girl?

I have a feeling is someone managed to mutate into a T-Rex or similar, they would have no choice but to go full feral attacking and eating toothy monsters in order to not starve to death. They would flat out be denied entry into Endtown most likely.

I have recently started playing Darkest dungeon, i found about it thanks to smagg's irrational holly pic...

i was actually thinking which Endtown characters would fit as the Hero units, Jim would definitely be the "Abomination" for being completely mentally unstable and holly strikes me as the grave robber, What do you think?
>>
>>82581960
Possibly, but I don't think they'd be a full sized T-Rex. Larger than a normal human, but not colossus sized. Would probably not be very helpful in Endtown though, what with small arms. Large muscle might help with boulder moving though.
>>
>>82582830
Still, even a downsized T-rex, like 20% smaller, would still need a LOT of food and space. Plus assuming they also function on cartoon logic, the poor mutant must constantly fend off the urge to eat things since we don't know what dinosaurs actually behaved like.

The cartoon logic and harsh reality often clash, pretty sure intentionally.

Unfortunately we don't have anything except Holly's account to go by. And finding anything to corroborate or contradict it is going to be hard, with the other involved people being dead (at least supposedly, though the zero bombs falling would likely leave them double dead).

Short of Ethel or Lyn turning up, Aaron will be the only one who really knows.
>>
>>82583272
That's the point, really

the comic is so morally grey it's literally grey.
>>
I doubt it's a "virus" at all
>>
>>82583977

>>
>>82583977

>>
>>82584069

>>

>Gun placement

>>
>>82583381
You can't draw a conclusion using unreliable data. It's one thing to to speculate as to why a character made a certain action, but if you don't know the action ever took place it's just pointless.

If potentially none of it happened, the whole flashback is made redundant, and makes me think using dittos is just a cheap way to be able to retcon stuff later.
>>
>>82582361

I like the shading!
>>
>>82584083
Because topsiders believe it protects them from the virus. That's why they don't transform because they think nothing will happen as long as they have the suits
>>
>>82584265
Do they have to go unconscious expecting to mutate then?
>>
>>82583381

That's true, kinda. Aaron goes through with greytones and touch ups just so it's grey. I always thought it was so it looked more retro.

That's freaking awesome man.

What other Endtown characters would fit in the Blood / Souls games?

I can see Walt as Siegmeyer of Catarina, with Dottie possibly as Sieglinde. I know someone drew Allie as him, but Walt might be a better fit. He can seem lazy and inefficient at times like a slumbering bear, but becomes a beast when pushed. The fat armor fits him too.

Sarah would be Patches. Lautrec was a consideration, but I think Patches might be a better fit. Can't think of one for Flask though.

>>82584917
