I'd say it's a mixture of qualities from the generation of cartoons of the 90s and modern trends. Like a lot of shows now, the main character is incredibly goofy but it's played in a way to feel cute and endearing. It also (in my eyes) leans more towards 18+ viewers than it does children, similar to a lot of cartoons in the 90s. One thing I can say about shows now is that there are hardly any references that I feel would go over a kid's head. It's like the writers don't acknowledge that adults are watching. Star seems like it's talking directly to it's audience at some points. It's refreshing to see.

I don't ship it (not opposed to it happening, it's just not something I care about for this show), but their friendship is done really well. Well, aside from the very first segment where it's played as "how will my wacky new roommate and I EVER get along?"

There are so many cartoons where the friendships of the main characters seem really shallow, intentionally or not. Like, they'll throw one another under the bus for their own goals just for the plot of the episode, or one will be insulted a lot by the other for humor, and those can just feel like really unequal relationships that you can't buy as friendship.

And while I actually like when that kind of dysfunctional dynamic is used deliberately for humor, this show made me realize how refreshing it is to see two characters in a comedy cartoon who are genuinely good friends.
