What is /co/'s opinion of The Princess and the Frog?
>>
forgettable
>>

Love me some jazz and some delicious brown
>>
>>82453912
the last 2d film from hollywood. not the best note to go out on, but by no means a bad one.

We shall remember you, theatrical American hand drawn animation. we shall remember.

>>
>>82453912
It was okay.
>>
Tiana is my favorite princess.
>>
It was alright, nothing special
>>
It was beautifully animated and it had a great villain, but it the rest of the movie was bland and forgettable. It felt like Disney was so afraid of offending anyone that they just played it safe and ended up with a mediocre movie with really awesome artwork.
>>
>>82454444
It's nice that blacks got their own Disney Princess though.
>>
>>82454547
Yeah, we're all really relieved.
>>
>>82453994
I thought the last one was Winnie the Pooh? Nonetheless I love this movie. It's not the best Disney movie, but is definitely one of my 10 favorites.
>>
>>82453912
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It could slide comfortably into the Disney Renaissance without feeling out-of-place at all.

It's cute.

There's a cute frog in it who makes some good reaction faces.
>>
Great villain but otherwise forgettable and way too fucking long.
>>

It's only an hour and a half.

a clusterfuck of themes. looked good though
>>

Music was good too.
>>
Tiana is cute.
>>
WHY THE FUCK DID THEY SPEND THE WHOLE MOVIE AS FROGS IN A SWAMP
>>
>>82454444
>It felt like Disney was so afraid of offending anyone that they just played it safe and ended up with a mediocre movie

Tiana herself was a pretty bland character. The prince was pretty good. I also think they should have kept the Alligator's original story, which involved him also being someone who was turned into an animal by Dr. Facilier. Being an alligator that just wanted to be a jazz musician seemed... weird.
>>
Real good songs, nice animation and setting, cool villain, somewhat forgettable otherwise.

Oh, good moral too.
>Work hard to achieve your dreams
>But don't let work control your life and make you miserable
>Find a nice balance
>>
>>82456985
Frogs are easier to animate than humans and kids love animals
>>
Dr. Facilier is one of the coolest Disney villains
>>
PatF is one of those films where I like it for what it could have been. It could have been glorious but instead it's a 7/10. I do love the characters, but I wish they hadn't spent the majority of the time as frogs. I love the setting and wish they'd spent more time in New Orleans. They played things very safe and it shows. It would be nice if they did more with it. With tweaks, I do think that PatF could make an excellent stage show, and I wouldn't mind if they did a live action version, since literally every other property is getting one eventually. Fuck, make it about Facilier growing up as mixed creole kid in the south and learning voodoo from his mama, since a lot of the LA films are villain focused
>>
>>82456985
They didn't want niggers to be butthurt about accurate portrayal of New Orleans like they were already butthurt about Tiana previously being a chambermaid named Maddy because DAS RACIS.
>>
>>82458010

Making her a Chambermaid named Maddie wouldn't have improved the movie, because then she just would have been a bland and humorless (but not in a funny way) downtrodden character like Cinderlla was.
>>
>>82458010

>>
>>82453912
Big issue is that while it was a great callback to the classic Disney 2D films like Aladdin, it didn't try to really do anything new.

Why not try to make it look more like a painting? Or use some sweet at filters? It didn't really bring anything technologically new to the table.
>>
>>82460974
Wow, that'd make her more cartoony than Mulan.
>>
>>82460993
>Why not try to make it look more like a painting? Or use some sweet at filters? It didn't really bring anything technologically new to the table.
You make it sound like that's a necessity, that a movie can't be great without it. I don't think that's the case.
>>
>>82461052
It can be great without it. But it's doubtful that it will sell without.

Animation is great, music is great, story and characters are great. It does get a bit slow in the middle, and it would be nice if the movie took a few more risks, but the movie is strong enough to overcome these problems.

People didn't watch it because the popular mindset was still aligned against Disney because of stuff like Home on the Range (Bolt was okay but had Miley Cyrus in it so people didn't watch it), and also because of muh racism / muh 2D animation.

Honestly? I like it better than anything Disney has put out since. I really love this movie.

>>82460974
A fair opinion, because this movie has a lot of great concept art, but how often do Disney characters look like their concept art?
>>
As usual, I hated the goofy and irrelevant side character.
>>
>>82453912
It wasn't anything spectacular, but it didn't deserve the negative backlash it received. 6/10 imo.

>>82458010
Actually, one of the biggest problems blacks had with this movie was that it was an interracial couple. And Naveen wasn't Caucasian. To be quite fair, that was the most progressive thing about this movie.

>you stupid honkie only whites can be racist

Apparently not.

because at the same time, they already were trying to get rapunzel/tangled to do that exact thing and it was making them tear every hair from their skull
>>
It's alright. The visuals are nice, Tiana's cute, nice villain.
Randy Newman's hackjob isn't awful, but they really could have done better.
Plot was pretty uninteresting and most of the secondary characters sucked.

The Rescuers is the supperior Lousiana-set Disney 2D cartoon.
>>
Cute but dull and far too safe.
I actually would have loved if Tianna was descended from a voodoo priestess and had to help the frog break the curse so he could marry..uh...blanche devaro and defeat falcier but he falls for her in the end.

Seems kind of pointless to have sex with a prepubescent. What is she going to do? Just rub herself on his leg until she gets off? She can't stimulate him.
>>
>>82461952
And the film identifies Devil's Bayou as being in Louisiana
>>
>>82461988
Kids watch princess movies because they'd prefer to be princesses than normal girls, like boys watch cape cartoons because they'd want to be heroes. That's escapism anon.
Although I guess the "rags-to-riches" part is important to some of those stories, I'm not surprised people didn't want the rags part to reference slavery. That's not what they came to the movies for.
>>
>>82462098
That has nothing to do with race relations. Avoiding that topic is sugar coating reality such that kids don't get jaded. THAT isn't escapism.
>>
>>82462050
I don't remember a specific locale being mentioned
>>
>movie with primarily black cast set in the US south in the 20s almost completely shies away from directly mentions race
>movie about animal cops has full out race war and openly discusses prejudice and racism in multiple ways
I do like Princess and the Frog. I just wish they hadn't played it so safe. But it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.
>>
>>82453961
>Not frogettable
>>
>>82462150
But it is, you retard.
PotF doesn't reference slavery like Hercules doesn't reference slavery despite it being common practice in Greece back then, or like Aladdin doesn't reference the female condition in medieval Islam despite Aladdin being explicitely muslim (and Chinese) in the source material, or like the Dragons franchise doesn't show vikings raping Anglo-Saxon women.
Because they're escapist movies featuring magic bullshit all around, not educational or in any way accurate ones.
>>
>>82462226
It's almost like analogies are the best way to deal with touchy topics, especially in cartoon movies aimed at 8 year olds.
But nah, I guess let's have a nigger get lynched in PotF, the kids would love that because it's historically accurate.
>>
>>82462310

Some good songs. Everything else was pretty forgettable. Except the villian, he was pretty cool. Also the main character might as well of been a secondary, everything revolved around the prince who had hardly any lines. And if I remember correctly the villian didn't even know about the main character until the very end. She might as well of been an after thought.

For me it was great to see classic Disney animation and the movie was good overall. That said, it is painfully obvious that it was played safe and ended up making the movie go slowly.

On the flip side my little sister loved it and immediately claimed her as her favourite princess. So I guess that was nice.

And now I just want to fight Dr. Facilier in Kingdom Hearts 3.
