Last thread was tops. it was top dog. top ramen. So much fanart got did. I'm gonna do some later in return! maybe if I'm not fucking worn out from three days in a row of unexpected shit-have-to-do-ing. actually I don't do neaarly enough fanart in these threads, possibly because i never know what style to use.
and just to sort of but not really repost, >>82366216 because several cameos happened. cameos of YOUR bad guys! and I may still have room for a few in the next one, so if your villain is a bad enough dude to be a regular at a bar that is also a big spooky castle and may or may not have a portal to hell in it, and you want them in there, lemme know
>>
>>82386307
el oh el

But seriously if you could point out exactly what's wrong, I would appreciate it. Helps me improve
>>
>>82386470
I'm not even really sure where to begin. The body makes it look like a completely different head position was intended. It's very difficult to believe that arm is wrapped around those legs.

There's also something to be said of how big she looks in that shower despite how low the showerhead is.
>>
>>82384167
>I have to admit, I would start thinking the format was getting tiring after this issue.

I totally get that. I DO want to make each major story arc feel rather different from the last. I LOVE Monster-of-the-week series, but I also want a break from that and try to make a longer narrative more akin to a knight drama (I'm thinking 60-70 pages) after the characters end this storyline in the Northern Wildlands.

>>82386231
Got a laugh out of me, but watch out for the perspective in panels 2 and 4 in the future. I can tell what you're trying to do, but it's an awkward perspective to draw. I'd generally recommend avoiding it if the character's expression is important and draw her front instead; if not, you'd mainly just draw the back of the head.
Pic related isn't the best but I think it gets the point across, I'm not too good with it either

I'm not good enough to show you exactly what you need to fix, but her spine should be more curved. Her sitting position looks very stiff, as if she's singing in an opera while doing some kind of gymnastic balling up exercise. Her hips are also a little misaligned.
>>
>>82386729
Huh, didn't even consider the relative height of the showerhead. I think I see what you mean about the arm too. Better make some tweaks

Stats time!

April was a great month for Miss Melee, with over 3,500 unique visitors, an impressive retention rate from March where we experienced a massive influx of new eyes on the site on a scale that dwarfed every other new reader surge we had experienced.

For the daily breakdown, "visits" is number of unique visitors for that day alone, "pages" is total number of pageviews (non-unique), and "hits" is every single time one piece of information (an image, a chunk of text, etc.) was retrieved.

We also surpassed 1 million hits some time in the past week, which probably doesn't mean anything but like 15 years ago it was a big deal for a webcomic. And hey, one million is a big round number!

Also I included some stats for things like browsers and operating systems. Not as many people read webcomics (well, at least MY comic) on their phones as certain people would have you believe, but it is still not an insignificant number. I really should make my site responsive one of these days...

Also, it seems a lot of people from France read my comic. Neat!

gotta think in 3d, man. i know it's hard but it's the only way. you've drawn these treads from the side
also just to be more pedantic, the purpose of wheels in treads is to turn the treads, so A) you only need them at the corners / along the bottom and B) you don't want them touching anything but their front-and-back neighbors. the top ones can't touch the bottom ones because they're spinning in the same direction.. try it out with some spools of something and you'll see what i mean.

cool! okay here's how we're rolling: you have picked a direction here, based on the head and the treads, so let's make the body work in that direction
it looks like a basic soft-edged square kind of 'chiclet' shape, with two cylinders coming off for the shoulder mounts, yeah? so we'll do like this
then we smooth it out a little
now see you've added some nice lines. when we think in 3d those lines change a little, depending on the way things are facing. see how it follows the middle line?

continued for arms...
>>
>>82395360

now see, a ball for the shoulder is nice, but you have to connect the arm to the ball somehow, right? so let's say you do it like this. this gives a nice range of motion.

now see how i'm connecting the elbow in a way that's rotated 90 degrees from the shoulder? that allows a nice elbow-y movement front and back, while the shoulder can move in and out. then I rotate the forearm's bits too so there's ROOM to move. this is just a really simple robot but I think this is what you're going for

then the claw hand is going to work a lot better if you think of there being little wheels on either side, holding it in.

Light always indicates time and dark always indicates space.

Speed and weight, to put it bluntly. If you want something to indicate a giant WHOOSH, lighten the entire area. In this case, a cyan or bright yellow might work. And whatever color you use, stark white can go in the middle of it.

I've diddled with the muzzle flash a bit.
>>
>>82395986
Do you even have a comic?

>>82395926
no prob. sometimes all it takes is just a little bit of a walkthrough and your brain clicks and starts getting it.

>>82396201
I'm trying to convey that the gun removes relatively clean cylinders of the environment unlike conventional weaponry. I guess the nearest equivalent would be the Graviton Beam Emitter from Blame! but way less powerful.

Also the colouring all round is pretty sloppy here so that's still to do
>>
>>82396412
So it's more of a force projector instead of a proper gun or laser gun?

You might want to go for some kind of visual distortion or warping at the muzzle, rather than proper muzzle flash, then. It would convey exactly what the gun does more than regular (or even differently colored) muzzle flash would do.

Tablet is less fucky, my art still sucks but I'll say one thing, my wrist is happy.
I feel like I can finally explore and do a better job with my strokes as well as paint some shit.
This is new.
The other comic, people told me to continue, I don't mind if a majority of you wish for me to continue with same premise but I am more than willing scrapping everything and starting something new, I got a backlog of elaborate ideas so, shit.

the shaded areas of the face (generally) would be a tad redder than the lighter parts of the face

could maybe do with a bit more colume in the hair

Here's this week's Wilfreda the Wanna-Be Witch comic.

Background info: Wilfreda is facing the school's bully to prove that the magical lemonade she drank in the previous comic really is magical. Also, don't judge a bully by his clothes.

Very simple setting, no background, mostly copy-paste sketches, but different expressions in all four panels.

Real talk family man, your Kiwi Day N comics are straight up awful. If you're seriously this much more talented you need to forget that shit, bro.

Like, really, those comics are not helping you grow in any appreciable way. They're keeping you chained to a very specific style that's way less expressive and dynamic, and it sticks you to just a few perspectives. If the volume of your work suffers, that's FINE. A single page of a really well produced comic is worth way more than twenty pages of boring crap.

Not doin' it to grow, bro. doin it to amuse. originally, to stay afloat. It's also my storytelling practice, and babby's first posing and background practice. They're simplified enough that i have managed to use them to get a lot of shit right that I used to suck at.

'serious' drawing with realism and details and all that shit held me back hardcore because none of it ever looked good enough, it was frustrating. then I did these stupid comics and suddenly it's like OH yeah you can totally draw a hand if you just.. do this and this.. and there it is! it's immensely satisfying. the low detail thing is freeing as fuck.
>>82402226
yeah yknow I dig it, comicstrippery isn't going to win any graphic novel awards. it's not for everyone. but I'm having some fun. and cmon, really? Imagine my same comic with my same writing, but with art looking like WORK was put into it. That'd be incongruous as FUCK wouldn't it?

Not to say I don't need to improve, gotta do that a lot. But the end result (For comics) is that it still doesn't LOOK like work went into it, just looks subtly better. tighter.

You've literally failed on all fronts, because your comic is completely uninteresting, stiff, and poorly written.

Like, if you're just doing it for yourself that's fine, it's cool to make comics for yourself, there's nothing wrong with that. The shoulders don't line up with the rest of the figure. They nearly make a horizontal line across the page when they should be making a diagonal line that synchs up with the rest of the composition.

The arc of the rod doesn't match the perspective of the hand. It's lined up where it would be poking the index finger instead of being centered in the middle of the hand.

Despite popping back in the second panel, the character isn't bending forward in the first. Based on his posture in the second panel the character arches his back as he releases the star, necessitating his leaning forward beforehand. Instead he looks like he's drifting backwards in the first panel.

The lack of tension. The character is pulling back, building tension, but isn't grounded in the first panel. Then in the second panel he suddenly is? It's supposed to be dynamic, but it causes a logical discrepancy in movement.

Nitpick, but the hand's position in the pitching cycle versus the star's arc is incorrect. The hand would hit the ground before it looked like that.

I could tell you where it's objectively better. The face conveys expression well, the body is well-formed and dynamic, the line art seems more confident.

>>
>>82403936
You care about quality enough to not do talking head comics...but not enough to exercise good judgement and refrain from using every joke that pops in your head?

Either way, you're kind of missing the point. It's not about the simpler aesthetics, like whether or not you use dot eyes. You could use dot eyes and that pic would still be better than all your work. The sticking point here is you drew something dynamic, something with greater anatomical awareness, something with pretty good colors and nice composition...and instead you usually draw blobby, safe poses with colors that look like you abused the fill tool in MSPaint. Like shit man, all we're asking is that you just TRY to actually apply some of this.
>>
>>82404116
sorry you think that, dude. but it cant be for everyone.

>>
>>82404209
shit that's just because i did it on a 2800 pixel canvas
a typical full body figure in my comic ranges from 200-800 pixels tall, going smaller if i need to. and yeah i'm beginning to realize lately how much that holds me back. but i swear, it was NECESSARY for a while. i couldnt have done this without that.. that phase, if you will. not a comic. a series of disconnected drawings, sure. i've done those forever. you wouldnt believe how many, some of them. usually the premise being 'this is a game i'm designing' or shit like that

Nobody is dissing your style or choice to go "cutesy", you nincompoop. They're saying you've expressed a massive disconnect in quality between your comic and this fanart. Your regular comic looks cruddy, nowhere near as strong as the examples you just posted. If you actually bothered to use these skills you CLEARLY HAVE (decent inking, understanding of proportion and anatomy, non-lazy colors), your comic wouldn't be an eye-sore.
>>
>>82404226
Doing every joke that pops into my head is literally what this comic is about. sorry you're not liking it, but don't act like that's 'good judgment'. i'm not just using the symbol for wisdom because i'm a giant weeb, judgment is kinda my steeze. Whereas what you're doing is making huge and inaccurate assumptions. I'm here to tell you I did very little differently in this than I usually do. Same flood fill, same barely-considered cel shading, same amateurish safe pose that I bullshat entirely, same complete disregard to composition and same cluelessness as to what dynamism even is.

colors i eyedropped, which I usually do with fanart.
>>82404427
i am, using those skills, dude. sorry you can't see it. everything's by design and by taste. i mean why would I lie about that?
If you think right now I can accomplish the examples in >>82404260 using the skills illustrated in >>82404370 , then you're just dead wrong, or else I am. I guess it wouldn't be the first time, but I'm siding with me on this one.
Glad to hear you like some of my shit though! I'm not quitting that other shit anytime soon.
>>
>>82404260
second one looks like shit to me. first one is OK. not my cup of tea, but clear understanding of line weight, proportions, and perspective. all 3 things your comic lacks. it's not a "style" thing at this point.
>>
>>82404493
could you give me specific examples of proportion problems in my recent comics? because like, I can never tell those until it's too late. I look at some older comics and i go 'fuck, why was i drawing the fucking ARMS so fucking LONG?' but at the time, they looked right. and right now, recent comics i've done, the proportions look right
you don't have to go diving or anything, but next time i post a strip, if you see proportion shit, just lemme know okay? like specifically, like 'nobody's legs should be that long compared to their torso' or shit like that. because yeah, proper proportioning is what makes good chibi different from bad chibi (cough wind waker cough)
>>

>>

>>
>>82404485
>Exercising absolutely no judgement on what jokes are or aren't worth telling and opting to throw them all in is "wise."
You have to be fucking with me.
Your entire modus operandi is "fuck revision, stream of consciousness" and you're talking about wisdom as if you even exercise thought or judgement at all by doing that.
>>
>>82404650
some things you carefully craft and revise, but others, you train yourself to get it right the first time. i used to draw really hesitant lines before finding out you really need to do big sweeping strokes to make it look good, that's a great example of throwing out revision (For that one single action, i mean) and training yourself to start making the right stroke more often, with fewer ctrl-Fs
another good example is handwriting. though actually i get pretty anal about that and i often manually fix my kerning. but most people's handwriting it's about training to get it right the first time

there's some universal geometric aesthetic principles, some tastes, some emotionally evocative tidbits you can add, but it's usually hard to hit those intentionally (kinda like how you can't easily hit 'cool' or 'moe' intentionally, it has to just happen), so the best thing to do is do a few different versions.
not just to brainstorm-and-then-pick-one, but in the process of analyzing the differences between them you'll start figuring out what you really want to do deep down. then it'll start coming out naturally

Sorry for posting anime but these are two examples.
I like characters which are simple but cool looking.
Left looks fucking godawful. Too many colors clashing and she doesn't look neat at all.
Other than the eye crap on the right, all of them look good since their outfits are simple and clean and don't have all those contrasting colors on it. The bikini shit looks stupid though.
I never actually seen the show so I don't know if it's some sort of edgy beach party or something.
>>
>>82405536
Whether you want to or not is up to you.
But you SHOULD. How could such a normal seeming person (even awesome, according to you) become ColdFusion? There are a lot of lessons to be learned from the mistakes you've clearly made along the way, perhaps even for younger web comic artists.

How did you fuck up so badly? What the fuck HAPPENED to you?

I don't know how I art, I don't know what I do, it just happens. inconsistently, but it happens. and I don't know how to anything else either, it just DOESN'T happen.
I wanna go back to when getting straight As meant a free ride. When making friends on the internet was as easy as saying 'kawaii' and making the ^_^ face. when the webcams teen girls used were on COMPUTERS, not phones, and when the other end of that camera was on my computer. when i had the fucking energy to do anything, and the financial freedom to do nothing. and when it looked like social change was actually going to make things freer for me and mine, instead of more constrained.
Cmon, I can't be totally alone on this, right?
>>
>>82405670
oh god wow you have shit taste.

honestly anime is fine but if you think that contrasting colors is a bad thing you're a fucking idiot.

Girl on the left is drawn pretty mediocrely, but thats a matter of style, not design. in terms of design I'd say it's pretty good. orange and green have historically gone well together.

I'd argue the left is far more successful than the right in terms of color. Maybe not ourfit design though, for that, the right wins. even if they are completely nonsensical.

the image you posted just now is better overall because it has a better handle on STYLE, not Design.

to put it another way, Design is what a character looks like. Style is how a character is drawn.

At least in this case. I'm probably using the word style in place of another word that fits much better, so just bear with me.

What's everyone's biggest artistic influences anyway? Overall and right now?

For me, overall is Jason Little with "Bee Comix". And right now is probably Andrew Maclean with "Apocalyptigirl", and a bit of Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Seconds"

Honorable mention goes to "19 Days" by Old Xian for it's comfortable looseness.

How many "of course!" moments does your comic have?

By that I mean some piece of information is revealed to the reader and they go "of course!' because it all fits together and it all makes sense in the context of the story.

It's important to have these moments in your comic, otherwise you need to reevaluate your writing.
>>

> they only fit in certain genres
> I'm not writing a mystery

While >>82410971 's statement
>otherwise you need to reevaluate your writing
is pretty bold and shouldn't be followed blindly, they have a point. Mystery and suspense are what keeps a reader curious. They want to know, thus they keep reading. If their expectations are met, they will think to themselves it was a good story, it entertained them. A great story, however, succeeds the readers expectation, surprises him. Not in a way that the reader will feel fooled and throw away the comic, but in a revealing way: It all makes sense now - that's great? I should've totally seen it.

A story without surprises is boring, no matter the genre. So if I were you, I would overthink your statements, anons.
>>
>>82411040
You don't need to be clever, you can reverse engeneer plottwists and reveals. You got all time you need to find the best possible solution. It's trial & error.
>>
>>82411415
>overthink your statements
You mean re-think?

Or do you want us to worry and fret about what we posted. That's not very nice. I already do that with social interactions IRL
>>
>>82411006
>>82411065
Not them, but if the reader never feels surprised or is unable to find anything beyond the surface level to understand after reading over it, your story is really boring.

That moment of revelation is the core of comedy, whether it's subtle or explicit. It doesn't always have to be a bombastic thing, but revelation is a natural part of the storytelling process.

I'm giving an example where you normally wouldn't think it applies. If you're writing a story that's bereft of comedy, a lack of revelation in your story means it's just gonna be hella boring. If there's nothing surprising or worth thinking about, why read it?
>>
>>82411566
Yes, but they lay the groundwork for that in the panels before. It's not as random as it seems, the elements are there, unconnected.

>>82411498 is right about comedy and suspense both using the moment of relevation.

Also I'm not >>82410971 just to make that clear.

>>82411589
Here's your (you)
>>
>>82411652
You literally just gave examples, though. The humor in PBF comes from the surreal but understandable train of thought taking place. It's funny because it's not what you logically think of first and it's absurd, but you understand. "Of course" the dad makes out with the bully's mom instead of having a stern talk, he values sex more. That's absurd, that's not what you expect, but you understand.
>>
>>82411668
I know it's not random but I don't connect "It was him all along, just look at the clues" with "The ocean has eyes so it can 'sea' you, get it?" and I would probably choose the latter.
>>
>>82411725
Then I misunderstood, ayy lmao.
>>
>>82411661
To be blunt, I think they just don't notice that probably every work of fiction they know and like make good use of relevation. It's actually pretty hard to completely avoid it in storytelling, since every unexpected turn or information we are surprised by is per say a relevation.

Name me one successful comic/ book/ movie/ etc without a relevation.

The two first panels are the setup. Since there is no text, the reader can concentrate on the characters. Jon has a huge grin on his lips and wears two sunglasses. You wonder why Jon is wearing two sets of shades. The payoff is a lame joke Garfield comments on.

Honestly, this strip is not really funny, but a revelation non the less.

>>
>>82411997
That's actually untrue, it's just really difficult. While the initial anon insisted a certain level of emotional response is necessary, which is subjective, a story that doesn't even try to surprise or make you think is going to be boring. Whether you hate comedy or think mysteries are for losers, it's important to consider how much you're surprising your audience and making them think. Otherwise you might end up with long strings of exposition that don't matter to the reader or an arc that YOU enjoy but your readers don't care about. Pulling down the hood and revealing it was Old Man Jenkins isn't as important as either making your audience SURPRISED that it's Jenkins or making the fact that it's Jenkins MATTER to them.

TL;DR, don't do stupid shit like introducing a new character and have the characters act like that's impressive while the readers are just scratching their heads. Nobody cares about your OC on its own merits, DO something to make it matter.

Even though it's far from perfect and not my personal favorite, and even has problems with the very same issue, Poppy O'Possum has a good example of not doing this.

Early on a queen is introduced. Instead of leaving it at "wow so special" and dumping expo-speak (which is WAY more acceptable in writing when you deal with people who have political clout than with your average Joe), she immediately plays a hand in the events unfolding, giving us a bit of tension before she's introduced proper and we actually care about knowing more.

I actually just had one in the latest page (>>82386274), if some of the comments I've received so far are any indication. Of course Miss Melee would have a themed motorcycle!

I like how "of course" moments (that's one of my new favorite things) can be big or small and happen in really any medium, even real life. It could be something like a character being revealed as the big bad guy all along, or something as small as a character using this type of vehicle or wearing a certain style of pants.

I think most writers don't really try to have those kind of moments, though, they just happen organically.
>>
>>82414217
Will do ;)
>>82414257
It's alright, as long as we haven't totally lost you.
>>82414423
But you see, it's a meta metaphor.

Angel could be in a better webcomic, but west tree is where she belongs to be, because she is an extension of me, or in a way my self insert, so if she was in another webcomic, she would not feel like she once was when she was under my control, she would not be the real angel, she would be a fake angel.

Or at least, that's my head cannon :^)
>>
>>82413010
We got other comics in here with that problem, like Skylight and CitT (although both seem to be on hiatus at the moment and Skylight hasn't gotten very far in). It's an easy trap to fall into, so everyone should be extremely cautious!

>>82410971
I'm trying/tried do this in my comic, but it's always hard to tell because I'm the one who made it. I made "love me like an autograph" and was worried that the 'reveal' that they were famous would either be too obvious or not obvious enough. And since my site doesn't have comments - I may never know!
>>
>>82416175
They never struck me as superstar famous, but still niche big. Like maybe a little around TMBG big. Not selling out gigantic stadiums, but they could fill out a show in most venues while still being unknowns to a lot of people, and pretty human because they're not like, the Who or anything.
>>
>>82416175
I personally think that most "of course!" moments you can't will into existence. They just happen naturally as the result of logical writing and understanding the genre you're writing.

Actually it turns out I was wrong about the gas - the "kill you dead instantly" one is hydrogen sulfide, heavier than air, and the "blow you the fuck up" one is methane, lighter than air. Methane can still suffocate you, obvs, but it reaches a flammable mixture before it becomes too thick to breathe. Depending on the design of the sewers, you might well only encounter pockets of one of them.

Can do.

>>82424543
I start by picking the start and end point for each page from the script. Now I've got a clear series of events that gotta happen in the page. Important stuff gets bigger panels, obvious jazz like that.

From there its all about panel composition and placing balloons in negative space. That way the page is balanced and theres very little 'Balloons covering art".

Then I stretch these thumbnails over a real-comic-sized page and just ink right over. It's digital, so penciling's always seemed like a moot point.

After that I lift color from my previously-made color keys and references, tint it all a little so it jives, and drop some color in the line-art.

Currently there isn't really much more. Although I got interested in the idea again when I got deeper into programming something I could make an adventure game with.

Huh, ok, I think I kind of see what your saying, but I mean, it's not really pillow shaded because there's still a detectable light source.

Maybe I should just try and be more subtle with it next time.

Another page finished in time! Hooray!
Another page that ended up looking shitty, crammed, and showing several inconsistencies and a fundamental lack of undestanding of the most basic laws of cartooning! Boo.
But it's out in time! Hooray!

>>
>>82431547
right, it's not full-on brain-dead pillow shading, it's clear you know a bit about shading and rimlighting and stuff (one of the things you're best at, as i recall back in those comics that took place at night with a bunch of lights and shit), but if you look at annabeth's hair in particular it just looks like... embossing. actually looks a bit like you used the emboss tool in photoshop (look that up and you'll see what i mean)
just gotta think in 3d. you'll get it.

Never posted here got curious wanted genuine opinions and critiques.
I've had lot of ideas for webcomics, but never stayed focus enough to actually start doing one.
(Hopefully this is my first actual comic).
This comic is to be an experimental one really, i'm trying to improve as much as possible as the comic progresses. My own way of mastering just art in general. It's a bit cartoony, but that because i've had alot of influence from western animation and a little eastern as well. But my main focus is on just having fun with this.

Anyway besides me blathering about my own goals and dreams, I want your honest opinion on these pages. what do you think? whats wrong with the picture? could something be improved? you know give it your all i can take it.

This is terrible in so many ways
>art style like a downs syndrome Little Lulu
>terrible, dry attempt at humour, only funny in the context that someone made this shit and thought it was good
>lack of color is not a bad thing, but the type of comic it is (super deformed faggot hijinx) just does not lend well to it
>character dialogue is like nails on a chalkboard, mind numbingly dumb
>that fucking title

Good job m8

ooooh nice floatycontinents. and i love the way-out trees. you have a talent for environs
the lizard's suffering from some serious motionblurface at the moment, and if those are meant to be feet in the last panel, i dunno.. they look more like leaves

Yup those WERE feet, now I feel like an idiot... I should have chosen a better view for the character to stand/walking in frame.

Thank goodness this is a sketch...

howbout you practice making shading / highlighting that's more than just a rim, but something that fills out the shapes

A little bit of a style test for the next Sisters arc.

Sorta feelin it. Sorta not.

I'm digging the really hard-line shadows, but not matching the line-work feels non-committal.

Gonna try a few more things after a lay-down.
>>
anyone try dancing between different artistic tones in their story? when things get serious the art gets serious, when things are light hearted, the characters become cartoonish ect ?
>>
>>82436855
I think I do it a little bit, subconsciously - I've noticed that I usually eyeball my characters to be six heads tall during more silly scenes, and eight heads tall during more serious ones.
>>
>>82435400
So cats can see the ghost cat but not people?
>>
>>82436825
It looks neat, but I'm not sure how you'd make it work for indoor or darker scenes.
>>
>>82436932
I TOTALLY DO THIS.
I like the result too. Its why comics are a great medium.
>>
>>82432509
There is LITERALLY nothing wrong with nitpicking. Every tiny detail matters in a visual medium. You may not notice it, but your brain does.
>>
>>82436855
I actually like the tonal dissonance of having the art get more realistic for the stupidest jokes. I pretty much do what >>82436932 said, while variating the general proportions a bit for specific jokes.

>>
>>82437253
The eternal conundrum with heavy shading. And yet some how people like Mignola pull it off. Shit's crazy.

>>82438515
Pfft. There's gonna be a bit of a timeskip between arcs. In-comic right now it's just after spring-break, next arc will be the middle of summer. So they get to be a touch older.

Also summer obviously means potential beach episode. Obviously.

My writer and I were actually just talking about this.

Jam's about 16ish, B's early-20s, Erin's late-20s. We originally had hard-ages for everyone, but between bad memory and a buncha rewrites, it just became easier to ballpark it.

Google it. It's the only thing that comes up. It's usually a pixel art term but it is the best descriptor.

You're trying to apply a technique without any understanding of where/why/how you put color down. Start there. Study from life and you can understand how to apply techniques properly.
