I hate this so much.

Steven Universe had numerous episodes with this.

And the one with Mayor Dewey especially on how he was lying about when the power would be returned to Beach City, and Steven defended him by saying that he lied to them out of love.

The people had a right to know so they could figure out what they were going to do already. Not spend time relying on false promises.

Super powered main character ... loses powers.

I'm not talking about Avengers/JLA being depowered so a supernormal like Bats or Green Arrow can save the day and show his worth. I mean: you sit down to an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and suddenly she's just a normal girl. Newsflash: if I wanted to watch a NORMAL UNPOWERED PERSON do shit I could be watching LITERALLY any OTHER fucking show!

This is right up there with the Ground Hog Day episode and the Freaky Friday Body Swap episode in the list of things that will get me to drop a comic or tv show at *lease* for the current arc.

There's also the CW favorite: "keeping secrets" for no logical reason other than the writer's want some "drama."

"Characters play video game" episodes are fine, like Regular Show's power glove or South Park's WoW episode, but if your killer is hiding themselves behind a video game, or your grand adventure takes you through an 8-bit world, you need to go fuck yourself.

>and Steven defended him by saying that he lied to them out of love.
You are missing the point of that episode big time.

This episode is about Steen realizing that the Crystal gems are being coy with him and Steven realizing why they are doing it by making a parallel with Mayor Dewey.

I mean it(s almost literally there:
>It's okay! It's okay! Mayor Dewey was hiding things from you but he did it because he didn't want you to worry!
>He was just sheltering you from the truth because he... *enlightenment and understanding dawn on him* He loves you.

Replace it with
>It's okay! It's okay! the Crystal Gems were hiding things from me but they did it because they didn't want me to worry!
>They were just sheltering me from the truth because they... *enlightenment and understanding dawn on him* They loves me.

Now the important part is that Steven right after that actually CONFRONT the gems and ask them to be frank with them. The moral, at the end, is actually that THE TRUTH ACTUALLY NEED to be told, as Steven make sure the gems finally get to be honest with him.

But the moral is also that when people lie to you, it's not always out of malice, but because they care, even if it's not the right things to do. Lying doesn't make one a bad person and that's the other moral of that episode.

So don't have your characters become rich in the first place. Use a one-off character or don't do that plot at all.

Or have the sack to change a character's situation rather than dryhumping the status quo.

Ehhh, I can see where you're coming from, but...not really, no.

First movie, Po didn't really fight the villain so much as he Deus Ex Machina'd the villain.

Second movie, the villain was still far superior to him in terms of fighting skill, but the villain's hubris was his own downfall. Plus more Deus Ex Machina in the form of "suddenly learning how to do a new move that just happens to hard-counter the villain's main weapon".

Third movie devolved into spirit world magic bullshit, so even more Deus Ex Machina.

Well in 1 it wasn't as bad as you think. They show that Tai Lung's main weapon was the pressure point business, not just superior fighting ability. Without his trump card he had to fight on an even field but with desperation clouding his judgement, tipping the odds in Po's favor so he could deus ex machina the finger hold.

I like how Drive handled it, apparently in order to soften up the character's silent, violent and isolated nature they had synth pop playing while he was being more human compared to his cold and professional career criminal persona.
They didn't have to go all the way to the opposite side of the spectrum and show him walking around in a pink cheerleader outfit.
>Winding Refn chose to give the Driver very little dialogue and instead have him drive around listening to synthpop music, taking control when it counts
See this is the difference between someone who knows how to use various media to convey something subtly and the hacks who go for whatever cliché or stereotype will get them by.
Of course the Driver character has now lead to its own subset of clichés but that's not the point.

And what would exactly saying the truth achieve?

Steven realized the test wasn't for him but for the gems. And he could either act petty and small-minded, spoiling it all - or he can be the better man and act exactly as they hoped he would just so they can feel better.

Existing in an environment where a small white lie means nothing to you (except that you had to lie, oh no) but a whole lot to other people is a part of being an adult. That so many anons here hate the episode's message just makes me think a lot of /co/ isn't emotionally fully mature yet.
>>
>>82389448

The point was that the roles reversed and Steven finally understood where the Gems were coming from, and understood that he was now in the position where he needed to consider doing the same. Sometimes people just need to believe something. He realized that just as much as they thought he needed to believe he was useful, they needed to believe they were doing right by him. So he did what he had to do to boost their confidence.

I thought it was a great episode to showcase how mature Steven has gotten. And it's not as if it was an outright lie: he DOES need their support. Though I won't argue that the better option would be for him to talk with them, tell them that he understood what and why they were doing this, and telling them that it wasn't necessary and they could be realer with each other.
>>
>>82390948
That's something you do afterward. If you do it right then, you're hurting them more for literally no reason.
>>
>>82391049
Depends how you do it, I think. It seemed to me that when Steven realized why they were doing this, he appreciated that they were looking out for him like that. He's a charismatic kid, he could figure out how to frame it so it didn't hurt. Come from a place of appreciation of their intent, and it won't be inherently hurtful.

You don't know what a Deus Ex Machina is. Po won in the first movie because he played on Tai Lung's obsession with the scroll, and both one and two the methods were heavily foreshadowed, with two having the technique being the main focus of the damn movie. Nothing in the trilogy came out of nowhere, each technique was foreshadowed at some point, which is not a Deus Ex machina by definition.

This is easily the worst part of any body swap episode. I usually like those episodes otherwise. Are there any cartoons where the voices stay with the body? I think Shin Chan did it once but no other cartoons come to memory.

It just feels like wasted potential. You have talented voice actors, have them play the roles of the other characters.
>>
>>82394139
The only episode I remember them not doing this was the Justice League one, and it worked so well because Lex and Flash spoke so differently from each other that you could tell who was who just from tone and articulation.

>>82391950
That's the point; it's impossible to know. With no physical evidence you can't tell whether any given person os lying or not. Even if you could somehow read minds, human perception is imperfect. Feminazis seem to think so.

I don't see how more feminists aren't going after these kinds of episodes because it implies female characters can't do shit outside of their own special snowflake episode, not to mention a poor attempt by the writers to save their asses from SJWs. Bullshit. Lying is an essential skill for coping with living with other people.

It's why we can relax on the couch and not think about the fact that people have puked, pissed, wanked, fucked and drilled a million farts through it before we sat down.

It's the mechanism we use to get by in relationships by lying about the fact that our previous lover was better at sex, or singing or any other random thing which will piss the present one off, and accepting it on face value when they tell us the same.

It's how we survive when she asks "does my bum look big in this?".

Possibly because the miscommunication is much more tedious in the interpersonal setting, whereas warfare tends to build up afterwards (even after you've said sorry, it's all a mistake, you also killed some of their doodz so it's risky whether or not you can patch things up again because the bonfire is self-fuelling and often wants to burn out of control into a huge conflict.)

I think sometimes with this, it's supposed to be that the villain's attack is in slow-mo or something, and that the person interrupting the attack is just moving really fast. Or in live-action movies/TV, the choreography isn't up to snuff.

No, that's stupid. We know Komodo dragons exist; that doesn't mean every large reptile, like say, the Loch Ness monster must also be real just because one of them is.

One Piece had Eneru as a character claiming to be God and had all sorts of divine like powers like seeming omniscience and being made of lightning. Zoro's asked, with all the crazy shit they've seen, how can he not believe in a God. He says that BECAUSE of the crazy shit he's seen that you could explain Eneru's power even more ways outside of being a divine being.

Also isn't Satan supposed to be the king of lies? You could easily say he made up God for shits and giggles to give false hope.

Lying is a weakness. If you need to lie to get along in society it means two things:
>That you are unable to know when to shut up

>No, that's stupid. We know Komodo dragons exist; that doesn't mean every large reptile, like say, the Loch Ness monster must also be real just because one of them is.
I don't think that's his point.

[i.e. if a skeptic "there is no loch ness monster" character sees incontrovertible proof the loch-ness monster, say it very clearly climbs into his house and asks him for about tree fiddy, he gets upset and attacks it cutting it open and demonstrating it's not a costume or whatever, the loch-ness monster drops his business card and runs away allowing him to revisit the monster at any time to engage in further verifications, it's a simple fact of reality the monster exists: it doesn't demonstrate that bigfoot exists, but it does demonstrate that he was wrong to believe no cryptids existed. If he continues to insist the loch ness monster isn't real, he's wrong, and that's the kind of plot I think the original poster was getting at.]

or to stick with Komodo dragons: someone argues in earnest that they're not real in this thread, going to stupid lengths to "prove" this because the writers aren't very good.

But the original post that started this whole thing was not believing in supernatural shit even if you've seen supernatural shit before. The proper analogy would be meeting big foot but still not believing in the loch ness monster. Since undeniable proof that one supernatural thing exists wouldn't somehow also be proof that all supernatural things exis.
>>
>>82438434
Re-reading the original post, I'm seeing it now more like
>Meet bigfoot regularly.
>See loch-ness monster run past
>"There is a rational explanation for this, it's not supernatural"

Which isn't as unreasonable as what I said, but does remain somewhat unreasonable even if it's entirely possible. Especially if you're living in a world where this kind of thing is pretty normal.

Like if the characters of the grim adventures of billy and mandy accepted all the crazy shit they've seen as a given, but a monster in loch ness was somehow beyond the pale.

Correct.

Is this supposed to be some kind of sarcastic thing?

Lying is NEVER acceptable, to lie is to assert your agency as being superior to that of another human being's. You have no right to deprive other people of the ability to act in accord with actual reality.

There's no difference

Even if they really, truly believe that they saw something supernatural that doesn't mean it actually happened.

What's more likely, that everything we have verifiably established to be true about the natural world is a lie, or that one person is delusional and experienced a hallucination or minor psychotic episode?
>>
>>82438720
People know that lies exist in reality.
They compensate for this.
If you are entirely honest you will inadvertently mislead people who compensate for your "blatant lie"
>>
>>82425539

The point is that once you have seen and verified one kind of supernatural event "It can't be true because it's supernatural" stops being a logically sound argument.
>>
>>82438858

>If you are entirely honest you will inadvertently mislead people who compensate for your "blatant lie"

That is irrelevant.

The actions of other people are not your responsibility, even if telling the truth leads to an undesirable result for you or for other people you are still morally obligated to tell the truth.

"Just this once" and "For the greater good" are never acceptable excuses for immoral behavior, if you perform an action then that action must be morally acceptable for all people to perform at all times in all situations, if not then it is immoral.
>>
>>82438903

It was never an argument that was made.

If I was just initiated into a secret world, sure, my authority over what is possible and what is not is forfeit until I relearn the boundaries, but if I'm already having a good idea of what usually does or does not happen, I'm not going to jump to conclusions. Everexpanding horizons of knowledge is not a reason to believe every possibility. Occam's Razor still applies.

They are not, they are different circumstances, and circumstance does not modify the morality of an action.

And that's not even accounting for the fact that lying is a very specific kind of moral transgression because of the way it overrides other people's moral agency.

You are free to simply not answer Hitler, not answering is not the same as lying.
