When's Static Shock gonna get a live action show? It'd work great. Solid supporting cast. Solid rogues gallery. Great hero. Easy origin story for all the superpowered freaks

And Ebon in live action. Oh baby.

Eh, I'd say Cyborg has a pl;ace. Kids love him from the Teen Titans shows. If anything if I were to remove anyone for Static, If I had to, it'd be Aquaman. I know he's beloved by us super nerds and an original but mainstream has never given a fuck about him.

It would be weird for both Cyborg and Static to be on the same team

>>
>>82365407
Cyborg doesn't have an electric theme, he's just a robot. Under that logic we should remove wonder woman because she's just a flying brick like Superman but without a dick or eye beams. In fact, with Gal Gadot playing her, we should probably just remove her just to be safe. I'll take Hawkwoman over her.

Static should be with The Teen Titans

No, stick to the Milestone comic and make Richie/Rick a fag. Make him handy with the tech if you HAVE to, but leave teh sissy-ness there for the gay-by-association angle that threatens his and Virgil's friendship. Static Shock was my absolute shit when it was still airing, the only other shows that came even close to being as hype to me was Ed, Edd n Eddy, Ben 10, X-Men Evolution and Courage. Static was just THE show for me, I remember making a shit load of OCs and imagining Static crossing over with the Teen Titans and shit.

Everything about it was so appealing to me, mostly because it had the concept of mutants and I was still in my X-Men kick, that and Static himself reminded me of this older black kid I looked up to.

I thought Ebon was fucking badass too. Me and my childhood friends would have these conversations about "what if we were super heroes?" And I remember saying I would have Ebon's shadow powers. Ebon may also be the reason why I find Gecko Moria and his powers so cool.

It's interesting because within the DCAU, Static and Zeta were both the more divergent from the DCAU's "typical style" (whatever that actually was), yet Static is genuinely entertaining in it's own right while Zeta's just reminding you of the more superior parts of the DCAU.

I think that's why Zeta somehow gets me unreasonably angry.
>Set in DCAU continuity, never exploits it

>>82369993

It's bizarre to think that Zeta Project and BTAS somehow exist in the same universe. It's basically your boilerplate WB genre cartoon they made a million of at that time, but it's still connected to DC by association.

Backdoor pilots don't happen a lot in cartoons, so the fact that Zeta Project was the one that got made of all things is fascinating to me. A shame the actual cartoon was mediocre as fuck.
>>
>>82370253
That was like the first sign that the golden age of Kids WB was coming to an end. MIB was about to end. Justice League was off on CN. Pokemon was all the way into Johto by then. Sure stuff like Static and Xmen were still around and Xialoin Showdown was coming down the pipeline but it would never be the same.
>>
>>82364719
Sorry I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but I feel like there are a ton of instances in tv and movies where a character will get shot in a "non lethal" area like the shoulder, express intense pain by gritting their teeth or something for about a minute- and then still go on to immediately do a whole bunch of action stunts like sprinting or jumping off a building or something, and after a couple minutes start acting like it doesn't even hurt as though we're supposed to forget they were shot. It's not like they make it look like a walk in the park, but it gives the impression that bullet wounds aren't often immobilizing.
>>
>>82370655
Well, they can't all be like Die Hard or Beverly Hills Cop, where getting shot is a big deal.
>>
>>82370599

Maybe it's my own mind and nostalgia speaking here, but in my eyes Static Shock had so much potential. He could've been DC's Spiderman. It's a shame he faded away into unimportance. It's several kinds of unlikely, but maybe he can be in Flash? The premise of each show is pretty similar.

>>
>>82366425

In that original shot of Batgirl's death, the camera was supposed to be outside the car when she landed on the hood. Censors thought it was too violent.

So instead they moved the camera to inside of the car- which censors approved of- even though it makes the impact 10 times more jarring and unsettling.
>>
>>82375762
>Luke didn't matter outside of boss fights
>Literally the only one who made the shot to destroy the Death Star
Then again, the Death Star is sort of a boss.

Anyway, the point is, TFA mixed and matched OT traits and plots points, especially ANH. Poe is rescued like Leia, but he's also the one who blows up the giant Death Orb like Luke. Rey is like Luke, in that she's a bumpkin stuck on a desert planet with some great destiny and probably Lineage, but she bonds more closely with Han over his stuff than anything else until the end. She also flies the Falcon and inherits it and Chewie. Finn is basically Han only because he's not a force guy and shots guns. His personality and backstory are probably the only things in TFA that aren't remixes.

In retrospect, Rey's actions did little to impact the turn out of the movie, other than being the reason Finn shows up to Starkiller Base and wants to help destroy it. Han and Chewie have the bombs to blow up the shields, and Poe and co. actually blow up the base. She and Finn fight off Kylo, but by that point it doesn't actually help the plot in any way and he gets away despite being beaten. In fact, the most important things she did were basically get a bunch of guys to chase after her to either capture or rescue her, so you'd think the usual peanut gallery would've been more up in arms about that. She did help Finn and BB-8 get off planet like Han. But that was sort of it.

Rey's efforts in the end are more like Han shooting Vader at the end of ANH, except even there that kept Luke from being shot down so he could blow up the Death Star. By the time Rey achieves anything in end of TFA, everything is already blowing up.

ExoSquad breaks so many cartoon rules. In the very first episode, half the characters we meet get killed after terrorists murder everyone on a ship and rig it to go explode when the search and rescue team arrive to look for the non existent survivors.

And later on, the people are starving and comment on how there aren't any dogs around because they've all been eaten.

>> literally world war 2 in space

More specifically, the European theater. They took influence from Gundam, which they compared to the Pacific theater.

I fucking loved Exo-Squad.
>>
>>82376074
I really enjoyed the mixture of characters. Finn was probably the main-main character for this movie, and some people think he's going to be force sensitive as well. Another Jedi duo would be nice. Poe seems a bit less important too, so I'm hoping he gets more screen time. Overall Episode VII seemed, like all star wars movies other than the last- like something that is its own story but with setup for something greater. Hoping the new one is good, and that they don't lose any steam by working on the side story,
>>
>>82368378

>Finn was probably the main-main character for this movie,

I agree with that whole heartedly. He's in the whole movie from start to finish, unlike Poe. His actions are the catalyst for the plot unlike Rey. And he just has a more natural connection to the ongoing events. Fighting against his former employer. He basically saves the day with his knowledge on the starkiller and his plan on how to shut down the shields. And he's the only good guy to have a full character arc. It also doesn't hurt that John Boeyga is a far better actor than Daisy Ridley. He had solid chemistry with everyone.

It's like Final Fantasy X all over again. Finn is Yuna, the actual main character while Rey is Tidus, the character the creators keep pushing as the most important.
>>
>>82378984
The thing I liked about Finn is what someone earlier psoted, he has no analogue. Rey just another mechanically and piloting inclined desert wanderer destined for force greatness and poe is basically Wedge and Lando smushed together but Finn is something new. A former villain who isn't redeemed by someone else actions, but redeemed by his own. Someone who initially isn't sure what they want but discovers it along the way.

Disney admitted to female empowerment undertones

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/04/07/disney-strong-empowered-female-star-wars-purposeful/

?“As you may have noticed, hopefully you did, the lead character in the Force Awakens was the lightsaber wielding Rae, a very strong empowered female heroine who really took the movie and the world by storm,” she said. “Let me just say, you know, that was purposeful, that was purposeful on Disney’s part and purposeful from the filmmaker’s perspective to make that lead character a strong empowered female.”

>who really took the movie and the world by storm,”

the worst part is they actually think it was good rather than literally strong womyn for the sake of it

It depends where you are shot and by which gun. You'd be surprised about how many people only find out they were shot wayyy after the fact. Its one of the reasons hospital trips are mandatory for anyone involved in a shooting.

I've never heard anyone say it was enjoyable though.
>>
>>82380262
Well, I think they knew she was just another old cliche and that Daisy couldn't carry a movie which is why in a lot of promotional stuff she and Finn are treated as the main characters, so Boyega can carry the movie for her and she can have her action gurl moments. Kind of like how Anakin is the main character of Attack of the Clones even though Obi Wan is played by a better actor and is the one doing all of the plot relevant stuff.

Apparently there's a comic about the stuff he was doing while Luke was growing up, and it's pretty good. Could be based on that.

I would really like any story that focused on him to go into the flaws that Lucas kind of glossed over in the prequels. They need to bridge his prequel, "The Force is a tool and I'm jealous of Anakin's deeper connection to it," to his OT, "The Force is truth and I need to trust it."

The way TV execs works, is that there can only be one, maybe two black characters, or it becomes a black show.

Similarly, you can only have one, maybe two black shows on, or it becomes a black channel.

And static is relatively high budget, so it's got less of a shot vs a cheap tyler perry type comedy.

So, as a general rule, you can't have, for example, afro samurai, the boondocks, AND black dynamite all made at the same time.

I've seen this. It's kind of like how UPN became known as the "black channel" even though shows like WWF wrestling, multiple Star Trek shows, Veronica Mars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Rosewell were on it. Nope, they had the audacity to have One on One, The Parkers AND Moesha all on at the same time so it must be that black people channel since no white people ever watched it and black people only watched that channel and nothing else.

Booker T. Washington was smart, as in he new how to make money for himself. He was detrimental to the Black cause at the time, and advocated for Blacks to forget about voting, that they should be happy to have a job. Booker was able to advise the President of the United States, not because he was particularly smart, he was, but because he was safe due to his avocation of blacks to accept their lot in life as inferior.

Not even black just a high school history teacher.

And /pol/ was behind Dorner because, even in their fucked up rationalization of things, they understood that he'd been fucked over (and they were excited to see him outsmart the police). Community and culture has a much, much bigger impact. Black illegitimacy was on par if not lower than white illegitimacy during Jim Crow. Not surprisingly, black neighborhoods were much cleaner and safer back then, despite the fact that African Americans were much poorer and much less educated. This is because illegitimacy, out of any other factor, has the strongest correlation with criminal behavior.

For instance--- most of the people in the Klan are just regular joes. Some are loud and proud rednecks from the back end of the US, sure, but just as many are Wall Street brokers and investment bankers.

Most people that are racists look just like everyone else. So the you are only going to ever see a few racists be public about it, if they aren't black, and those will be big people that are used to not having to worry about other people.

That's just the female primate in action.

Her short term mating strategy is to find the biggest, strongest alpha to fill her up with kids.

Her long term mating strategy is to find a beta male who will help her raise the alpha's kids.

Beta males don't have to fight, and get a chance to pass along their genes by helping the females raise their alpha gened kids.

Women have ALWAY found a man that other women want to be much more attractive. It's one of the ways women compete with each other. It is also a good indicator that if other women want him, she should to.

You see the same thing in all females across all races and classes throughout history until our present day. We will see this behavior carry on into the future until we change human biology itself.

That and back then blacks weren't allowed to live in the white parts of town, so if a black guy was successful, he still lived in the ghettos with the other black people and provided a role model (similar to the function of fathers). >black culture glorifying what the rest of the world views as abject failure

That's just looking at one portion of black culture and using it to define all of it. When Obama got elected for the first time it was a HUGE thing with people seeing it as a sign of hope and change. Neil Degrasse Tyson is a cultural icon. There are magazines dedicated to black enterprise. You can't just say "oh black people all wanna be drug dealers and rappers that's why they're in shit".

And while I'm at it, fuck that "black kids are a lost cause because they think getting good grades is acting white" line. How many dozens of tv shows and movies do WHITE kids get ostracized for having good grades or being a "nerd"?
>>
>>82404781
It's the most prominent part of black culture these days. The number of black celebrities that are good role models is less than the number who aren't by a significant margin, simply because it's much harder to find fame as a scientist or whatever than as a musician. We need more NDRs and Obamas and community-minded musicians and fewer 50 Cents.

>How many dozens of tv shows and movies do WHITE kids get ostracized for having good grades or being a "nerd"?

In the last 10 or 15 years? Significantly fewer than in the 90s. And tv isn't the determining factor of pop culture anymore, the internet is, so I would personally make that comparison a lot more readily, but I don't have those numbers.
>>

>He's a business mogul because he has money to do that.

Just because you have money at one point doesn't mean you can become a mogul. Countless people, especially musicians and athletes, suddenly come into a lot of money but then end up penniless within a couple years.

And just because that broke-ass 19 year-old can't invest a million dollars in vodka doesn't mean he can't aspire to be a successful entrepreneur. There's hundreds of programs around the country dedicated to helping young black people with those dreams.

If anything, his past should make him an even better role model because kids who had a tough as shit childhood like he did can see how he got out of that life and ended up with a net worth of $155 million. And sure, it would be great if more impressionable people could separate persona from the actual person, but it's not like it's exclusive to rappers. Check pic related. But if you do want black culture to be more positive, writing off people like 50 Cent is just contributing to the problem.

That said, unfortunately I have to brush up on this sort of thing, as it's been awhile since I was reading about this particular subject.

What? He was never jealous of Anakin's affinity. He had long accepted it. Some of Ep 3's best moments are when he's just shooting the shit with Anakin, and when he tells him not to worry after the Council denies his promotion to Jedi Master. His only flaw is the fact that his adherence to the Jedi order is too inflexible, much like Yoda.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
It's started mainly because well during the era after the war, people would get better social security benefits if they were unmarried. Living in the ghetto was tough, so people just wouldn't get married.

That's not so much the case as it is now, but add that the underclass is less likely to be married, that black men are more likely to be prosecuted by the law, and there you have it, and having a record pretty much makes it impossible to move out of the lower class, and then you have a cycle that continues to repeat itself.

They call it the New Jim Crow for a reason.

It's kind of poetic when you consider that black families have been getting torn apart ever since the first slave ships left Africa. Then it was used as a tool to oppress them.

>Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off, and the child is placed under the care of an old woman, too old for field labor. For what this separation is done, I do not know, unless it be to hinder the development of the child’s affection toward its mother, and to blunt and destroy the natural affection of the mother for the child. This is the inevitable result. - Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave

>His only flaw is the fact that his adherence to the Jedi order is too inflexible, much like Yoda.
This is something people always miss. Since he and Yoda fit the "wise mentor" role people assume that both characters are meant to be wise and always have the answers. This is especially true with Yoda, whose ever other phrase in ESB is treated as a fortune cookie of insight... but the entire point was that Yoda was too set in an old way of thinking and too rigid to consider any change to it. He had experience and he clearly understood the Force, but he was also deeply stubborn and believed he had all the answers. He was so sure of his own conclusions that he refused to even entertain the idea that Luke's alternate path was viable. Luke's victory was in proving him wrong. Obi-Wan sometimes gets excluded from all this since we have a scene in ROTJ where he blatantly admits his faults, but people tend to forget that scene too, so they forget that Obi-Wan is someone who made some critical mistakes.

This is why people see Yoda acting like a stubborn asshole in the prequels and think this is some new development and that Lucas turned Yoda and the Jedi Council into idiots for no reason. Yoda was always a stubborn asshole.

It's the year 2016, and nobody knows what black culture really is, BUT if you have to describe it, it's always every hoodrat, hoodlum and criminal thug gangster you can think of, and that's okay, because you don't actually have to know anything about black people or black culture, just as long as we all agree that this is what black culture is, and the darkies don't know any better and are dragging themselves down.

For fuck's sake, nothing has changed from the early 00s. Must I endlessly jump through hoops to NOT be immediately compared to the worst of my peers? You say "obey the law", and law obeying people get shot anyway. You say "dress nicely", and even the nicest dressed of us get tackled and though of as criminals. You say "Get a job", and well, I'd better how I brought the right name to the job, or I won't get it.

I guess the reason nobody knows anything about is, because there's actually no fucking point in knowing anything about black people, because at the end of the day, nobody gives a shit or a fuck. You can do all the research you want about the history of discrimination in America and how it's lead to conditions today, but since nobody else has done that research, it's just "well, the blacks are bad and so is their culture" and that's the law of the land.
Say anything about systematic racism, and race doesn't matter, you're making a big deal about nothing for a free ride.
But when it's time to talk about what's wrong with the black man, race and culture become VERY important.

Is this the Curse of Ham? It must be. The nightmare never ends.

At the risk of taking this into /pol/ country, as we're getting way off of comic books: Not to downplay the absolute crap that incident was, but other populations have had similar issues, say, the Japanese American internment, the Zoot suit and other anti mexican riots, and all the shit the Jews had to deal with around the same era.

Trying to claim that the crucial problems there today are a direct result of historical or systemic racism risks underplaying the other factors involved.

The people looting and burning black small buisnesses in Baltimore, Ferguson, LA, riots 1, and two and the like weren't klan members or white supremacists.

Isn't Walter White a pretty popular character?. Less than stellar people and characters have been role models have been glorified and promoted throughout history. Didn't they just make a show about Bonnie and Clyde? Again?

But only with black people does it start and end with such people. Black role models are bad, end of story. Black people can't tell the difference from reality and fiction, end of story.

Maya Angelou? Ralph Ellison? Hell, Aaron McGruder? Dwayne McDuffie? Well, it's easier to say, that yeah, maybe some of the "smart blacks" know, and then the rest love the rappers and the shooters.
The "most prominent part of black culture" is just just the loudest negative stereotype in most people's eyes.

This place is really weird like that. Most of the time you try to talk about race/gender/religion/politics it turns into screaming and shit-flinging.

And then every now and then you end up with a calm, rational discussion. Like a year or two ago there was a thread here on /co/ about Christianity and its history and it was weirdly civil and I ended up actually learning a lot of stuff I didn't know and considering certain things in a new light. No tribalism, nobody trying to bring in other religions and smear them, nobody even trying to pit Christianity against atheism. It was strange and I wish we had more threads like that.

In comics, there's a serious problem with the current hypersensitivity these days. People, as in the new morality freak when minority characters have flaws, particularly if those flaws resemble anything like any stereotype, so you tend to have stupidly perfect unrealistic role models, ala Hudlin's Black Panther or you have ultra bland flat characters, like Miles Morales.

It's why so many of the new tumblr tier books are so flat and boring. I'd like to see more stringer bells and more innovative black villians in the genre.

The Black Wall St. example is just a single significant event to show that it's REALLY FUCKING HARD to overcome the damage done by slavery and systemic racism. Black people were able to come together and build Black Wall St. in a little under 20 years. But it only took a single race riot 16 hours to reduce it to ash. 35 city blocks. Two hospitals. 10,000 made homeless. Those other riots were schoolyard scuffles compared to that.

Sure, other races have had similar circumstances, but they started out with a lot less baggage and had a lot less obstacles on the road to recovery. I'm not trying to turn it into a contest, but that's just the facts. You can't just say "well, the Japanese and the Jews are doing alright so it must just be that black people are doing something wrong".

Pic related is from Static #7. It was an arc where a black supremacist anti-semite named Commando X was bombing synagogues claiming that the reason Jews did better than blacks was because of some conspiracy

>The people looting and burning black small buisnesses in Baltimore, Ferguson, LA, riots 1, and two and the like weren't klan members or white supremacists.
I'm not saying that it's an excuse, but it's a given that people are going to take advantage of chaos during a riot to either break shit.
Black people are human too, and this isn't an alien concept to other people. But with black people, it always turns into "this is the TRUE nature of the monkey", because we still hearken back to ancient stereotypes of black people to this very day.

People dislike anti-vaxxers because they're literally trying to take medical advancements back into the Dark Ages, but NOT because they're white.
Penn State's riot to defend a child rapist isn't seen as a white thing, even though most of them are white, just as a school being silly.
I can't imagine that race wouldn't become the defining factor if the people behind them were mostly black.
All it takes is one of two guys that are black to spoil the entire pot. Crazy dreadlocks woman? The blacks have gone too far! Someone in BLM said something stupid? They've gone too far!

I'm thankful that Boko Haram hasn't managed to make it's way to America and they weren't behind something as huge as 9/11. I could honestly see Jim Crow being reinstated if that happened

Honestly, that's why I'm never really onboard when people demand for a diversity character or changing the race of another character.

You're never really going to get something that feels natural, like someone wanted to make the character, so whenever they speak or act, it doesn't feel like some lame attempt to pander directly to you.

I can only think of something like The Wire, that has like maybe 50+ black characters in it, and they're all DIFFERENT, even if they have similar backgrounds. You ask for a black guy for the quota, and you won't get one fucking good character.

The only black villain I can think of that isn't from the Wire is Barracuda, and he probably only works because he's so over the top and a lot smarter than he lets on.

Stuff like this is why Milestone was so ahead of its time. They were doing diversity better in 1993 than the big two do in 2016. One of their flagship characters, Icon, is a black right-wing conservative who got compared to Rush Limbaugh in issue #1. Hell, they even had a FTM trans character. In 1993! Most people TODAY don't even know that FTM trans people exist. They didn't have diverse characters to look progressive or fill a quota. They had diverse characters because the world is a diverse place and they wanted to reflect that, personalities and ideologies included.

Baracuda is great, because even though he's incredibly stereotypical, he plays against it at just the right times, is smart, and most importantly, he's pleasant and affable most of the time, which is a good counterpoint to super grim punisher

As far as black villans, off the top of my head:

Killer croc, Tombstone, and angstrom levy come to mind, but none seems particularly black, in that you could race swap them without changing anything. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

After that, there's what, Hypno hustler? Cool in a black dynamite sort of way,

Black manta, has some stretches in his long history that I'm forgetting that keep him from being in the first category

Wouldn't surprise me. It can be hard out there for any actor or actress trying to get work but it gets harder if you don't meet certain standards. It's a vicious circle. People like "you" <insert non-brunette caucasian male here> don't draw as well because there aren't enough of your kind who are big stars since we don't cast people like you in the first place. Well, that's the overt portrayal we see in the movies. However, if you read between the lines and try to resolve some of the weird narrative/logical discrepancies in the prequels, you realize that 1) Obi Wan is actually the viewpoint character, not Anakin, and 2) he's an unreliable narrator who's fudged some of the facts to fit his interpretation of events. Anakin's situation was actually quite complex and his decisions become much more reasonable if you assume that the way we see him in I-III is actually through the lens of Obi Wan's bias. Similarly, it makes his character arc more satisfying. I had my doubts, but Han Solo's portrayal in VII clinched it. He's Obi Wan's analogue in that movie, and both of them go from having a misunderstanding of the Force in the preceding trilogy to a true vision of it in the first movie of the next, after their arrogance towards it leads them down some harrowing paths.
