since shes running her hair would be flowing, and since her head is turning it would be flowing along to that

I do art for a living and I'm at the point where I just want time to work on my own stuff so badly, I almost resent my client work as much as if I wasn't doing art at all.
Still better than working in a call center, though.
How do you all go about character design/development? I tend to stich together various attributes of doodles into one design, and then figure out a personality and story that I think fit with that design.
I need tips on how to do comic book style inking and shading
I've been watching clips and videos of industry professionals like Jim lee inking and stuff, but I still can't seem to grasp it fully.

Here, Batman. This is a character portrait for a friend's D&D campaign. How well or bad did I do with the work?
>>82383226
There's a variety of ways to show design characters. I usually think about the environment and what kind of setting they live in. Do they live in modern or a more older era of their time? The outfit a character may also have indicate what their personality could be, and its good to add as many hints of who they are and what they do as a living. Also, when it comes to animation, its important to make it as simplistic to the audience as possible.

What are you struggling with specifically?
Sorry Batman but I'm going to bed I'll finish my pic tomorrow
>>82407182
Thanks for the reply.
I've followed a few tutorials on how to draw form, but it seems like none of it is sinking in. I can't draw a sphere without going into extreme detail with the contours wrapping around it, and even if I do, it's 50/50 that the sphere is in the right angle.
Here's something I recently drew, but I feel like it's lacking a lot of volume. Drawing bodies is even worse.
>>82407298
have you gone through drawabox's lessons? not just that, but you can submit your work to the subreddit for a nice, in-depth critique. it's very valuable.
you could also try drawing basic shapes from life every day.

>>82408613
I have been to Drawabox, but I feel like I'm missing something when it comes to the lessons about organic shapes and intersections. Again, it's like I have to always add the 3 axis and lots of contours across everything instead of naturally drawing whatever form I want.
>>82383226
A lot of my characters come from me just throwing together a background character, and becoming too attached to throw it away. Like, "let's just make a quick little punk teenage girl... Crap, she's cute. I can't just never use this again..."
My "Main" characters have gone through so much iteration and design changes (within reason- they don't suddenly change ethnicity or body shape) over the years that it's more of an ongoing process of refinement than a conscious decision.
Oddly, the background-turned-returning characters tend to be a lot closer to their "final" designs upon creation than any of the primary characters I've made. Little tweaks here and there are inevitable, but not NEARLY to the extent that I've iterated on my other characters.
>>82407298
i think its pretty good anon, youre problem is line weight not being where it should, like the line could be thicker at his mouth end, his chin folds, ect

>>82383226
i always develop my characters personality and backstory first
by then ill already have some idea of what they look like bodywise
from there i play around with their design
never go with your first design right off the bat, even if you think its perfect always draw multiple designs
I guess this is related.
A bunch of people have started asking me if I do commissions, to which my answer has always been "eventually, but I don't know about pricing." Well, I still don't know about pricing.
A couple people told me that I should figure out an hourly rate and figure out how much I value my time. Well, I still don't have any idea, and I don't think I will without help.
For those of you that take commissions, what do you charge? What do you think is a fair price? To those of you that have seen my stuff on the dabble-too tumblr, what do you think I should charge? Ive been trying to figure something out for too long, and I'm not getting anywhere.
>>82413715
How much salary would you look for if you were looking for a job? That's how much you should ask for. And say yes, already! They're literally waiting to give you their money and you're refusing it.
I think going a few weeks without my tablet has been good, since it's forced me to generate more content ideas rather than waste time on what brushes would look good.
I thought the face looked fine when it was lineart, but once I added color, it's just...not working.
Dunno if I should keep tweaking what's there, or just redraw the eyes/mouth in a different style.
>>82414614
Looks fine to me.
>>82414544
Honestly, I'm the last person I'd ask about valuing my time and content. I can't even begin to tell how many times I've talked myself out if accepting money just because I felt weird about it. Hell, I was offered $20 a session for math tutoring, and I said I'd do it for free. I ended up doing about 10 sessions, all for no pay. I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to these things. All I need is a place to start when it comes to prices.
>>82414614
Personally I think it'sGreato-Dazebut if I were to change anything it'd maybe be the lips. Maybe add some shine or a lower lip since jojos are known to have kissable as fuck lips.
>>82414725
For your art, I'd personally say that whatever you do, don't start your prices below $10. You're good enough to at least do $10 sketches. And just work your way up from there.
>>82414798
Thanks, that's a good place to start! Sorry to pry, but what about something like pic related? Single character, lineart, full color/shading, and simple/no background?
>>82414614
Maybe the mouth? That's the only thing that looks off to me.
If you want to change the whole face, then maybe a more serious expression. With an overall cute little body but just the most upset kind of angry face you can imagine.
>>82414725
NIGGA, get that money
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBwAxmrE194
>>82415299
For you. at LEAST $25. But honestly, I'd aim for aound $30 really. Keep in mind that they're paying you for your time. Every character or background or whatever someone wants should ask a significant amount to your price!
I've been trying for a while to make my art look like less shit, but it'still stuck like this at its best
>>82415420
Thank you!
Anything that I should watch out for when accepting commissions?
What's the best way to go about line weight? I mean, depending on what should a line be darker or lighter? Things like skin folds or areas with heavier weight?
>>82415648
Set ground rules. A list of things you will not draw, Things that you will draw but will charge extra for, and all the ways you can be contacted. Make sure to keep a semi-close relationship with your commissioner so that you can give them exactly what they want. In terms of payment, I prefer to wait until I've finished the drawing before I get paid but you might want to do something else (I wouldn't ever send the final render before I've been paid though).
>>82415648
Beware of comissioners who don't know what they want and change their minds half way through, or expect you to read their minds, or neglect to mention details they later inform you are really important. Frequent, reliable communication (progress updates and feedback) is essential to ironing out those little wrinkles.
Don't start work without a thorough understanding on both sides of what is required and how much it will cost. Get that formalised in writing/email.
Don't hand over the final artwork before it's paid for. If you can get half or full payment before you start work (at least after thoroughly discussing the layout sketch), so much the better.
(see also: Clients from Hell)
Good luck!
>>82415682
Find your light source. Where are your shadows coming from. Knowing that, thin lines where light hits, and thicker, harder lines where there are shadows.I usually taper a bit into folds starting thick and thinning down.
Thick lines on heavier weight is pretty smart too. Especially at the bottom of something heavy.
>>82415648
learn how to file invoices. It's not totally necessary but it's legal and prevents you from getting fucked over when it comes time for money. It'd be good to let that person know when you expect to be finished. It's not a bad idea to show the commissioner a rough sketch of what you got planned out, just so they can tweak the placement of certain things to their liking before it becomes a pain in the ass. Showing progress is good too, but as >>82415885
said, do not ever show the finished product until everything gets sorted out.
Dumb question, but how do you market a Tumblr page? That site doesn't have a "front page" like other sites, and it all seems to revolve around people already paying attention to you, so I don't really know where to start.
Also, do you guys wait for people to ask for commissions, or do you go ahead and advertise them?
>>82415648
also...if you're looking for a good crop when it comes to commissioners, mlp oriented stuff(you can draw humanized stuff too, not just the actual ponies) gets a lot of demand and people are more than willing to pay what they need for the product. This really helped me get into the groove of commissioning. I suck tho.granted, you are a good artist and quite well known around /co/ so you probably don't ever have to do that.
>>82416007
Howdy anon! As far as I know, tumblr works off the tagging system. People follow certain tags, which displays content related to that on their dashboard. Tag your artwork appropriately and you'll see that. A big thing is getting other folks on tumblr to reblog and spread your art around the site. As for commissions, it depends on how well known you are or how many followers you have. Some will go ahead and ask, but it's better to advertise it so people know the option is there.
Also, start advertising here. Can I see your tumblr?
>>82416127
I actually don't have a Tumblr, at least not one that's up to date, mainly for aforementioned reasons.
I have a Wordpress for a professional portfolio and a DA for pretty much everything else.
redmarlin.deviantart.com
>>82416208
I certainly recommend setting up a tumblr. If you have a bit of a portfolio of things to post, you can try what I did and dump some of it, and then set up a queue for the rest of it. The initial dump tends to be more likely to attract attention, and then the queue holds it. I'd also recommend posting at night, around 9 or 10 o'clock, that's when traffic tends to be highest.
Also, it doesn't hurt to post your tumblr around, though be careful about how you do it. With deviantart, you're fine making a post to advertise it. Here, however, I'd keep it to thread's that you are a regular in. I'd personally recommend only posting a link when asked if you have a blog, and maybe one post to mention that you've set one up.
>>82415902
>>82415989
>>82415885

>redmarlin.deviantart.com
hey man you're good. I'll follow you there, and on tumblr when you get it set up.
>>82416519
How does the queue work? Do you just upload everything at once then it outputs them one by one?
Also, what kind of tags do you recommend? Generic ones like "digital" and "art", or do you tend to get really niche?
>>82416963

>>82416519
>proof of completed work
You mean for the customer to review before you sign off and deliver the finished piece?
I usually sent a smaller version of the image, with enough detail to check that everything was fine before sending the final, high resolution art. The progress/feedback updates would also be a smaller-than-final size as well.
I wouldn't send something as blocky as that, but more like >>82415299 only smaller.
Also, I keep a smaller version of the art for my gallery.
>>82417049
>Generic ones like "digital" and "art", or do you tend to get really niche?
Fuck that, you definitely want to be descriptive.
Like >>82415299
Adventure Time

>>82417423
So, as many possible tags I can think of and then some?
>>82417049
When you go to post something, instead of hitting "post," click the drop down menu and select "add to queue."
You can edit/organize things in your queue under the Account > Queue tab. You can set how often it will post, and you can select a time range for it to be posted, which is weird, but it is what it is.
As for tags, be descriptive. If it's fanart for a show, try to hit the major names for it. For example, if it's a drawing of Korra, you should tag it as "the legend of korra," "legend of korra," "korra" and "TLOK." Clothes make for good tags, too. If your drawing has a tank top, crop tank or tank top in it, make it known.
You can also test the waters a bit by simply starting to type something and seeing what pops up in the autofill.
>>82417468
Basically
It's like casting a net. the larger the better. Try not to lie or be misleading about the content but other than that, the more the better. You might even want to use all the synonyms you can think of as well, i.e. "DAT ASS" butt, big butt, booty, ass, junkintrunk...
>>82417049
>>82417468
Bear in mind the first 5 tags are the most important so include your tumblr name as one of those.
So I'd suggest:
>yourtumblrname
>artists on tumblr
>fanart
>adventure time
>fionna
first before
>towel
>titties
>etc
Some people use tags for stream of concious commentary which, while fascinating, isn't really searchable.

>>82417702
>>82417510

One more question: if, for example, I tagged something as "The legend of Korra", would that still count if someone were to just search "Korra" since it's part of it?
>>82417963
Personally I'd reserve 'The Legend of Korra' for the franchise and 'Korra' for the specific character.
>>82417702

>>82400870

>>82419391
It's looking very good, but you're right something is off and that something are her legs. Look at what direction they are in in comparison to her upper and lower body. Her feet stand parallell to the viewpoint (you), but her body is aimed somewhere to the left of the screen. This wouldn't be that much of a problem except her left leg crosses her right. This makes it look like she's very off-balance

Did this recently in my beginner's drawing class. Think I fucked up pretty bad from the waist down.
I need an advice, but no the art kind.
I have been getting better at drawing bodies, but i sometimes feel like "is going to look awful if i do it" even if my previous attempts werent.
The other thing is that I want to draw some x-men but i dont know what kind of pose i want them to do, I am tired of drawing the character standing in 3/4 view or front.
>>82427987
Waist down, eh?
>>82428039
I fucked up everywhere?
>>82428060
No that, but you posted cloth, not anything with a visible waist.
>>82428135
Sorry, it's a mannequin draped in cloth.
>>82428152
Well, I honestly do not see a figure underneath the cloth, but the cloth itself is well rendered! Try to define and smooth your edges more, the wrinkles in the cloth should fade more at the ends.
>>82428328
Thanks! I have class tomorrow, and we're doing self portraits, so I'm looking forward to that clusterfuck. I've got a long face, high cheekbones, and heavy-lidded almond eyes, and I hope I can pull that off without it looking goofy.
>>82428411

>>82428888
Just saying "you suck" is uncouth. You're free and encouraged to criticize, just keep it constructive.
>>82428686
Yea, you're wrong.
No body knows you, nobody is going to hold you sucking from the start against you later on. If you feel like people are getting familiar with your work and that scares you for whatever reason just stop posting shit for a few months and everyone will for get about you. By the time you come back assuming you continue to practice and grow you'll be an entirely different asshole with shit work for people to critique.
You CAN NOT let yourself be so embarrassed on an ANONYMOUS image board of all places that you can't at least attempt things.

Your lines look good!
There are two things that I would focus on, and one of them is a nitpick. That is that the stylization of the hair doesn't quite fit with the rest of the character. Reduce the number of the spikes that you're using to represent hair ends, and figure out the general shape of the hair.
Another thing to focus on is proportions. Remember that the elbows should line up with the navel, and the wrists should line up with the crotch!
>>82449494
>the elbows should line up with the navel, and the wrists should line up with the crotch
Holy fuck, I've NEVER thought of it like that before, thanks alot, I'll definitely commit this to memory.
And yeah, I had no fucking clue of what hair to give her, I'm very aware the hair looks kinda off.

Alright, I'm still trying to figure everything out, so this isn't final.
Based on what I've heard from you all, I'm ballpark in stuff at:
> $13 sketches
> $20 lineart
> $25 flat colors
> $30 full color/shading
For sketches and lineart, each additional character would be $5, and $10 extra for flat colors and full color/shading. Simple, geometric backgrounds would be $5. There may be some variation based on complexity.
How to these rates sound? Too high? Too low? Fair? Is there anything that should be changed or otherwise look out for?

Hoo, had bit of a pause there. I needed to finish an essay, so I'm all good. But hey, thank you! It's supposed to be a Choose Your Own Adventure story about some succubus chick trying to get back to Hell.
There's not really a lot for me to saythat I don't wan to spoil in case I do start committing to this more. The image is supposed to be her in her temporarily bought armor...
But yeah, I get what you mean with the green. I'm not too sure what other color to go with, I sorta wanted something to contrast the rest of her already dark and red design. Maybe yellow?
>>82462232
The image is also older too, the headshots that I posted before are much more recently made. Experimenting with her color palette and all that.
Not visual art, acting. I'm working on my Harley Quinn.
>Everyone tries to give her an Italian NYC accent,
Wrong kind of NYC Accent. There are like 4 ethnically-divided NYC accents: Italian, Jewish, Irish and African-American. Harley has Irish consonants, Jewish vowels and Italian stressing. It's an accent you can only do if you've spent a pretty good amount of time there listening to all of the ethnic groups talk.
I've got a really similar accent to her naturally and I'm a theater student, so I'm using that as a springboard to cultivate a reasonably good voice for her.
http://vocaroo.com/i/s0UrmHp8bofq
I keep stopping. the accent isn't the problem (it's really close to my natural accent, just exaggerated like crazy), it's the voice. She's so much higher than I am and my range is pitifully small, so it cracks and knocks me out of the voice. The amount of throat constriction I have to do makes me hit the wrong phonemes, like with "hello" and "What better"
http://vocaroo.com/i/s0Tm6mda3JDK
http://vocaroo.com/i/s1zLfokxJfNS
Bonus: me totally fumbling Dr. Quinzel. I noticed that Harleen isn't as fronted as Harley, so I tried to dial the fronting back, but I dialed it back too far and ended up in the uncanny valley. I fixed this a little by the last take but it still isn't right.
http://vocaroo.com/i/s07GtfgrGN4y
I'm really warming up to VO. Mark Hamill is a legend and I've been getting into old radio plays like The Shadow and Adventures of Superman recently. I wanted (want, really) to be a stage actor but as fate would have it my legs don't work too well now which kinda ruined my career. I couldn't continue school It's been a hard road coming to grips with that, but I think I'm ready to love VO. I see a lot of my colleagues say things like "I hope I don't wind up a voice actor" and "it's not real acting" and it makes me wanna hurl. Some of my biggest heroes are voice and radio actors. If I have to do it for the rest of my life, it's not really settling at all.
>>82462285
Oh hey, it's you again. Glad to hear you're still around. Your Harley is still pretty spot on, dude. I'd definitely wanna hear you read some actual harley comics sometime.

where/how are you all learning to draw?

>>82465813
Went to school but essentially, ultimately, all artists are self-taught.
Well, I'm a professional artist, so most of my art energy goes into client work, but I took some time to sketch for myself today. When I wasn't working professionally I would usually spend several hours a day drawing. Not at any particular time, but usually in the evening.
Get studio work. It pays better and is more steady than freelance.

>>82465813
By winging it
>>82465813
Mostly self taught, breaking down the processes and techniques of other artists.
I practice by trying to at least draw one thing of any quality every day. Sometimes it's a little to much, because there's more doodles than writing in my class notes.
The pipe dream is self-employment from commissions and twitch streaming. The more realistic dream would be working in production management for a studio, be it movies, tv, or cartoons.

Well if I was an expert on these things I'd be back in a studio and not doing freelance, buuut...
In animation, learn storyboarding. Quick, clean drawings that show the animators exactly what the characters need to be doing.
If this interests you, get the 21 day trail for storyboard pro and learn it. It is rapidly becoming the industry standard.
You can get in as a character designer or a layout artist or BG designer, but those jobs are few and far between, and studios usually only have a couple of people doing that at any given time.
If you're more interested in concept art, video games, that sort of thing, look at the artists on
https://www.artstation.com/
That's more or less the level you want to strive for. I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it. Oh, and never, EVER listen to /ic/. They're idiots. Photobash, use 3-d models, do WHATEVER it takes to get the job done. This is a job, not an artsy fartsy past-time.
Lastly, make industry connections. Most of the jobs I've gotten have been through word of mouth or people recommending me, This is probably the most important thing.

Not bad. You could make the paneling a bit more interesting spice it up.Especial page 2.
Get some artgum or whatever its called to protect you panel edges and keep things white just so it looks cleaner.
Drawing a bit softer in pen would also make it easier to clean no need to make all these large black areas.
Also have you secured the legal writes to Gean Simmons Spiderman?
I'm forcing myself to start doing fanart, as it's something I've always avoided, but I'm trying to break a bunch of old habits.

However, you're highly likely to see the recipients name and shipping address, unless they're able to select the option not to show shipping details.

>>82503237
No offense to anyone else but, I think you're my favorite artist on here.
I ought to draw a sketch on paper and then do it on tablet for a direct compare sometime.
>>82465813
I'm learning at home, using various resources to practice. Videos, other artist's drawings, real life references, drawing tutorials.
I have all the time in the world to practice, but I don't nearly as much as I should.
My goals are attempting to piece together a realistic style, and my own style. There are 5 main things a good artist needs to know how to draw, and I'm going in this order
>People
>Objects
>Animals
>Landscapes/Flora
>Perspectives
This is the latest thing I drew for someone. I half assed the coloring, because I don't really like to.
>>82503681
One thing that helped me was scanning or taking a picture of a physical drawing/sketch and tracing over it digitally. Another was to start doing some simple exercises before trying to draw something with a tablet. Try making six or seven marks in random places on your canvas. Then, draw two lines between EACH point using quick motions. Ctrl+z is your friend. That helps me "calibrate" some of my hand eye coordination.
Also,<3
Should I do it?
>>82490373
Hey no problem. Storyboard pro is great, especially the newest version; it fixes a lot of the issues I had with it before.
So much easier than boarding in photoshop or on paper. Everybody wants animatics nowadays anyway.
I don't even know if any studios use "storyboards" these days.
>>82504352
> draw two lines between EACH point using quick motions
I don't quite understand
>>82506147
Apologies, it's hard to explain without a visual.
Pic related. Create a line between two points using only one stroke. The second line is between the same two points, and will basically just be drawn over the first line- it's just to make sure that you've got it down.
You don't even have to use this test. I searched for different warmups that other artists used, and choose this one because it was quick and works for me! Experimentation is always good.
>>82505345

For one moment I thought mods existed
>>82510222
I use Krita, imo one of the best free art programs, if you get used to it, it'll just work.
>>82510498
I'll take it down if it offends you.
>>82510593
No I said that because you deleted the other one >>82510163 and I thought mods deleted it.
I like it anon, keep doing God's work
>>82510612
Thanks man. I hope any art can be posted here as long as the content is not really bad.
>>82510467
the lion chick looks like she's just staring at the floor to me, like she's depressed. mess with her pupils/head tilt so that she's actually looking at the guy
>>82510538
im trying krita right now
i guess i can get used to it, i just need to figure out how to rotate the page
what settings do you have for the stabilizer?
>>82510788
Weighted smoothing on the brush settings at the right for lineart doe the trick; basic smoothing is more free for your hand, better for sketches maybe.
>>82510693
Cool man, thanks for the tip. Getting her pupils right has been a struggle.
>>82510693
This. Either work with her placement so he's more directly behind her or yeah, pupils works too. Maybe even the tilt of her head? Love it tho.
I have to spend some time most nights on fun after a long day in the esoteric porn mines.

Any more tips for me guys?
Like what to draw with? Currently I'm using shitty pencils and sharpies, but I'm aware that's damaging the quality.
Any tips are welcomed, I really want to get better
>>82512430
Unless you're wanting to keep the pages forever there's no reason to worry about what you use unless you don't like to use it.
Except you need a scanner.

Buy a sketchbook and pencils, draw shit you see, learn how to draw with the right side of your brain

One thing about your demo real: where the avocado goes behind the dancing figure, it should go between the figure and their blue shadow. Next time do the background shadows on a lower later. Otherwise, practice your inbetweens! Your style is great for animation.
>>82515514
Oh proportionally it's all sorts of fucked. I could blue line it myself. It's mainly, I just need some opinions on the simple shading to dark.
Still need to put detail and kid cookie
And still need to fix some stuff

Get 'Keys to Drawing' and also look into drawabox.com.

If you're referring to the left/right side thing, you have a point. But the method is true
>>82520087
some of them dont look like they belong in the same art
>>82525140
Yeah I know, I tried different lineart from what I usually do and I don't like the outcome
>>82520087
>>82520087
I really like the artstyle and character design here, but apart from 4chan and /mlp/ I cannot tell who is what.
New thread?

Face is a little off on perspective I think. Feels like a 2d face painted onto a 3d cylinder.
Left (his left) foot feels a little small, I suspect it's because you tried to fit him on the page so it ended up being small.
>>82528345
It was based on that image, I don't recognize everyone either
>>82530008
What is this anyway?
insects bra.
Also question for other artist. How do you guys work portraying motion and perspective? Off of reference? Line of action?

>mfw learning color pencil painting
The results are amazing beyond description and I can barely believe my own hand did that, but goddamn that stuff takes time. 6-8 weeks in a single piece, and that's by painting like 3 days a week (cuz I gotta draw the other four).
>>82535938
Care to share anon?
>>82536420
I know how this is going to sound like I'm bullshitting some excuse, but I would rather not. I'm thinking of making a page somewhere (facebook, tumblr) so I can post it online, and I would really like that to be the first place to do it as opposed to, for example, 4chan.
Also, I'm working on this one illustration right now that is only halfway done and if you've ever seen color pencil illustration halfway through you know how bad it looks before you start mixing the colors up.
>>82536825
you scared?Just kidding. I get where you're coming at. If you ever feel up to posting your stuff/tumblr link it up.
Apologies if this sketch is too much.
Never not bump
Oh shit it's dat bump
Before we get a new thread I guess I can squeeze in my hyper-simplistic 4-frame MS Paint animation of this gif.
I think the fact that I only animated parts of it might make it look stiff, which I think it is. Also one of the fingers moves a little awkward in my opinion.
I'll post more of my general sketches and shit in the next thread that I'm sure'll happen tomorrow.
>>82541020
post em

Alright Batman, you win. How's this?

I want them to hurt me.

guess I'll bump with what I'm trying to work with right now
wanted to contribute to the Skandi thread but I don't think I'll be able to finish it before the thread dies

Some progress.
Also, what's a good way to color underwater? Without just adding a blueish filter.
>>82549114
It depends on the lighting, but shift your colour pallette towards the blue-green end. Google up some underwater photography for inspiration.
>>82549370
This look ok?
How do I get into coloring (as well as shading n lighting) and outline
