I'm only on the second issue but this was an amazingoing read.

What does /co/ think of the new ultimates run?
>>
>>82328598
Awesome.
>>
>>82328598

It's the best marvel book currently if you like the meta stuff.

It is what the new FF could have been.
>>
>>82328598
I didn't like it until they left the omniverse. Then the story of Blue Marvel and all the meta commentary by galactus got me. So once i read issue 5 i went bsck and bought the rest.

I hate OP teams that just fight bigger and bigger threats but this is not it. The meta talk about the 'reboot' got me liking it
>>
>>82328756
This was the feel I was getting. It feels very FF but I love the cast so far.
>>
>>82328825
Never heard of Blue Marvel before picking this up. Guessing from capMarvel books. Any recommended reads?
>>
>>82329801
He has a self-titled mini that gives his backstory.
>>
>>82328598
It's like Fantastic Four meets The Authority, and I'm a huge fan of both, so I love it.
>>
I keep trying to get started on it, but it's difficult because I don't care at all about any of the main characters.
>>
>>82329801
His origin story is told in Legend of the Blue Marvel. It's not very good but it's probably worth reading if only to know where he came from, though as I said, it's kinda shitty. There was also a one-shot where he fights King Hyperion in Age of Heroes #3 that's worth checking out since it shows how he came out of retirement.

The recommend reading for him would be Ewing's Mighty Avengers followed by Captain America and the Mighty Avengers. It's by the same writer as The Ultimates so that's the best thing to read for more of him.
>>
>>82329944
I see how that can be a problem.
This month had a good issue about Galactus and the previous issue featured him heavily. Does that interest you?
>>
>>82329996
Exactly.
>>
>>82330030
Im Way too high for your question buddy
>>
Better than I expected it to be. Juggling too much to actually be good.

Good-Galactus, Eternity in chains, Thanos, and that's not counting the story of the team members. It's Game of Thrones writing, fuck resolving plot lines, just keep stacking more on top and hope they all tie each other up in the end.
>>
>>82329996
So far it deals with this fact perfectly. By not bringing it up in any way shape or form.
>>
>>82330030

......dude..
>>
>>82330030
bruh
>>
Yes, it's great. My favorite Marvel book right now.
>>
>>82330210
This your first time reading a comic anon?
>>
>>82329996
Funny thing, but I don't mind since they are all pre-existing, all pretty useful in their own ways and apart from BP and Carol, all would not be used by anyone but Ewing. The majority of Blue Marvel's appearances have been by Ewing by now.

Yeah, If only there was a corps of some kind adept at that, one that is somehow based around a country in the northwest of europe.

One that is somehow magically attuned to be the central point of all dimensions.

How the fuck does she even know dimension hopping other than being a godly mary sue.
>>
can someone story time this shit?

Based mods.

The last 3 issues have been amazing, I really enjoy all the meta commentary in the comic. Also, the art is great.

yes they are
>well their qualifications make them a mary sue

There is no captain Britain outside the multiverse anon.
>>
>>82331183
>There is no captain britain outside of the Multiverse
>But there is a dimension of turbo lesbians made by Wiccan outside of the multiverse

Yeah, she's not Qualified, she's a punchy latino lesbian who is as smart as a brick and could easily be replaced by someone like Captain Britain or Doctor Voodoo or someone actually versed in the Metaphysical and Multiversial.

She is a shit character. She drags the entire thing down.

She's like Tumblr's Dr. Who persona or some shit.
>>
>>82330694
Carol CAN be an argument but she is very suited for it. This is a cosmic team and she has a lot of experience there. Also they need a good pilot and that is her training.

If anyone doesn't belong it is Monica or BP. But BP is funding it and Monica is there for synergy powers between blue marvel and Carol.

It's actually a well thought out team
>>
>>82331235
You have to think beyond powers anon. She fits cause of her character she also brings some fun to an otherwise stoney and uninteresting team. You need different personalities to make this interesting. The entire roster but her and monica (?) Are military.
>>
>>82331069
this, or post a batch with the latest released issues
>>
>>82331260
It's really not.

Carol is A) not a good pilot, you could have filled that with fucking Hawkeye.
B) She's barely cosmic shit, she just is a hammie down Captain Marvel.

BP funding it makes sense.
Monica is a leader and has muscle
Blue Marvel is smart

What the fuck is America? "Oh I know Dimensions?" Bitch is like the least qualified.

Fucking Howard the Duck.

Carol you can use as a fly away, but not America.

She's literally worthless and adds nothing.
>>
>>82331235
>or someone actually versed in the Metaphysical and Multiversial.

We have been over this anon, she is versed in multiversal things anon you just refuse to accept it because you have a hate boner for her.
>>
>>82331357
>We need to have an annoying and sassy not-latina who punches things
>Because the team is stoney

They are entirely fucking interesting in and of themselves, America is actually the least fun out of ALL of them.
>>
>>82331376
What are her Qualifications?

"Jumping between dimensions" is not a Qualification no matter how much you handwave it.

I hate her because she's a shit character.
>>
>>82331362
>Monica is a leader and has muscle
but she isn't the leader in this and they all have muscle any strong person could fill in for monica.
>>
>>82331418
Because has fought the threats they are tackling it has been covered in the comic book itself.
>>
>>82331473
>Because has fought threats

So literally any basic level dimension hopper could take her place, without being a blackhole of personality around her.

Go ahead, name the threads and how America is so UNIQUE and her INTERESTING PERSPECTIVE she brings to the team.

Fuck it, Just replace her with Spider UK.

There, I made the Ultimates 10000% better.
>>
>>82331533
>any basic level dimension hopper
except there aren't many around.

the Cap Brits Corp is dead, too.
>>
>>82331575
Spider UK survived I'm pretty sure of that.

Also It's plenty an excuse to bring them back instead of the most airheaded dumbass dimension hopper ever.
>>
>>82331575
Pretty sure Brian Braddock is alive as is Spider UK.

Also it allows access to Marvel UK and their meta shit.
>>
>>82331362
Hawkeye would die on this team. Carol can fly in space and has way more experiences in space. Or are you forgetting all her X-Men stuff? Shes the most experienced on the team with space
>>
>>82331649
>Carol can fly in space and has way more experiences in space. Or are you forgetting all her X-Men stuff?

So does literally everyone because Ms.Marvel is a fucking train wreck.

Also, You're saying this like BP wouldn't be fucking dead too, Silver surfer armlocks aside.

Why do we need Carol when we have Monica AND Blue Marvel.

We have like 3 Marvels and Carol is objectively the worst one.

What exactly does Carol "handle" that isn't just fucking punching things and or/ blasting things?

She is pilot and xeno experience. You fail to address the qualifications everytime you god damn shitposter.

Would hawkeye invent a teleporter so he can join team fights? No. BP DID.

you havent read it yet obviously so pay attention tto the storytime

Monica is living light, and can alter her spectrum to be different forms of light and energy.

Blue Marvel is a flying brick combined with "anti-matter manipulation" which basically means he can shoot energy blasts and manipulate different kinds of energy.
>>
>>82331975
Actually I read this first issue when it was story timed.

It's alright. The problem is basically. It's an okay writer using the most bare bones level of "WoooOOOOooo meta stuff WoooOOOOo" to make things seem semi-interesting.

Like I said, Blue Marvel, cool as fuck, I like space science man.

BP being ground control, Cool as fuck, at least he and Wakanda are doing shit.

But the rest.... Why? Why have them there? They don't "Explore" or give plot reasons.

Carol is a bus driver. Monica? Miss America?

>>82332051
So what the fuck is Miss America then? She's fucking worthless. She is literally a Fanfiction character, now we're supposed to assume she's a master dimension hopper too?

It has potential, but sadly, all of that is in BP and Blue marvel and the rest of them fucking slow them down HARD.

Major Tom Blue Marvel would be awesome with him just exploring the cosmos and relaying it to BP back on earth.

You expect every character to have a moment to shine in 18 pages? Holy fuck anon. Its free for you to read in this thread. Make the minimal effort.

I said before it wasnt until issues 4&5 that i was sold. Not all the characters have has their moments yet but those got me into the story and the dynamics of the characters.

Again, have your read teams books. Most of the time some characters dont get anything special for a long fucking time. More than 5 issues for sure. This handles them much better

Do you think there is a better team book out now that explores each and every one of the characters better?
>>

This is like Secret Wars Doomworld shit tier "Cosmic"

Technically he's already busy doing Ultimate shit, just Ultimate shit that isn't based around 616, which is what this team is doing. He does it across the multiverse.

Also Ewing mentioned the letter pages that Giant-man would be back in a big way, so I'm guessing they're going to the Macroverse soon. Which promises to be amazing.

The Brit Corps is dead, and Spider UK isn't a natural dimension shifter. He uses a gizmo (and the web of life) to travel the multiverse. Well Adam, Monica, and Carol actually sync with each other really well power wise. Monica can turn into energy, Adam can manipulate it/power it up, and Carol can absorb it to become more powerful.

So Adam can give Monica a power boost then Carol can absorb Monica to get a double-power boost. Using their powers in tandem, they'd be able to reach insane power levels.

For the most part. The Superflow also has the whole "dreams" element that isn't part of The Bleed. See, the original New Universe's Nightmask's power was that he could access people's dreams, so when he re-imagined it into newuniversal, he basically re-used The Bleed for The Superflow but with the added element of The Superflow being what consciences access when we dream, so while Ellis' Nightmasks power was to access the bleed/superflow, he had to tie it back into the original Nightmask's power to access dreams, so he kinda blended the two together. There were a lot of neat ideas in newuniversal that unfortunately didn't go anywhere since he abandoned the project after his harddrive with all of his scripts and info for it got fried.

One thing I liked about The Superflow was the idea that Zeitgeists were reflected as literal weather patterns within the superflow. It's a conceptual space so what would just be ideas or memes in the real world were represented by things like storms in the superflow. That's why when Galactus and Master Order/Lord Chaos fight in the superflow, it's a battle of ideas and metaphors rather than an actual battle. Galactus punching Order is him defeating Order with the power of ideas and concepts.

Morrison was one of the four creators of hypertime (and according to Waid he was the one that came up with the "everything is true" approach and also the one who designed it). And Ewing totally ripped hypertime in issue #5

>And Ewing totally ripped hypertime in issue #5
Not really? The idea of hypertime is that you have multiple concurrent timelines weaving in and out that make up the "real" timeline, which is how everything can be canon.

Ewing's explanation was more regarding how the sliding timescale and retcons work. The events of the present can alter the past (retconning) and certain events have such a gravity to them that they're pulled forward in time (the sliding timescale.)

There's definitely similarities between the two, but they're not quite the same thing. Hypertime is "everything is canon" while Ewing's explanation is more "canon naturally changes overtime."

Hypertime adresses retconnings too

>"Best simple example: the use of the Blackhawks in 'JLA: Year One.' According to some DC stories, Chuck and Andre were killed during the 1950s and couldn't have been present in 'JLA: Year One,' not if there were only one inviolate timeline. So what this suggests is that, sometime in the past, the Blackhawks split off into a Hypertime tributary in which all seven lived - and that tributary fed back into the main DC timeline later down the line so that all seven could live on to become the ghastly super-hero Blackhawks for a minute or two. Did they continue living in this timeline? Depends on where the next writer wants to take it, which Blackhawks they want to write about.

As for BP in Secret Wars, in my opinion the only good part was his fight with Doom. It pisses me off how a parody comic did better in one page what Hickman could have assigned a whole mini to rather than a throwaway panel (make BP and Namor bond after losing everything).

I think Ewing might have made a deal with the editors. He would take Land art for almost his entire Mighty Avengers run but after that he only got the good ones like Rocafort and Ward. Hell his worse artist now is Sandoval and that's a matter of taste.
>>
>>82338058
I think they're inherently similar but different. Ewing's explanation was what Marvel editorial has been using forever. The sliding timescale, he just made it Canon in universe. Hypertime is as simple as everything is canon but since DC literally reboots and fixes their universe post Crisis every few years and pre crisis characters had growth, new version of same characters replaced them via multiverse, DC never needed sliding timescale. Although Morrison's Batman explanation can be used as sliding timescale but it falls more in territory of everything is canon. Video related.

The Ultimate Universe got blown up, but "The Ultimates" is a pretty awesome name for a team so they decided to keep it around by using it for this team. Had this not been called The Ultimates, it probably just would have been The _____ Avengers, and that's lame. More variety in team names is a good thing.
>>
>>82338987

Pretty much. And, to be honest, I love it. I can understand why some people may feel like this is a cheap justification for reboots, but I think that it's taking an oportunity. If you think about it, only decades long universes like Marvel and DC can have the luxury of having had so many reboots that they can label them as an actual cosmological cycle.

http://marvel.com/news/comics/26094/declaring_civil_war_ultimates

>So far, the team fixed Galactus’ hunger and moved outside of time itself to repair it. However, not everyone on the squad agrees with their leader. Blue Marvel might support Carol, but the same cannot be said for Black Panther, who stands with the opposition, otherwise known as Iron Man.

>We talked with Ewing about cosmic threats, Carol’s position, and how the larger themes of the crossover play into his vision for the series.

>Marvel.com: ULTIMATES focuses on big, gigantic ideas like stopping Galactus’ hunger and fixing time. How do the events of Civil War II play into the idea of heading off threats that threaten reality?

>Al Ewing: Well, CW2 is all about heading off threats; predicting the future and preventing bad future events is at the core of the dilemma. Really, the Ultimates are already trying to avoid terrible things coming down the pipe towards humanity—for example, being eaten by Galactus—and the events of CW2 provide them with the perfect tool to keep doing what they were doing. It’s why Carol’s taking the side she’s taking—taking a proactive stance to head off future threats is what she’s all about, and her glimpse of the possible futures that lie ahead has only hardened that resolve.

>Marvel.com: Speaking of Galactus, will he or any other cosmic characters play into the story at all?

>Al Ewing: Does Thanos count? We’ve already seen him on future covers, so it’s not a spoiler to say he's involved. How that ties into his involvement in the main CW2 story—well, the clues to that can be found in our “Road to Civil War” issue, issue #7. But we’ve already given you a taste of his philosophy; the epiphany that’s made him more dangerous than he has been for quite some time. I’m really going to try to dig deep into the creepy, world-destroying philosopher side of Thanos, the kind of mind that could be in love with Death...and worse.

>What can you tell us about The Macronaut and the threat he poses?

>Al Ewing: The Macronaut is another cosmic character, but this one’s all-new and all-now, True Believer! All we know about him comes from a speech balloon in MIGHTY AVENGERS way back when. I’ve been waiting quite some time to bust him out. Essentially, he hails from a “Macro-verse” infinitely larger than our own, the counterpoint to the Microverse. He’s made many attempts to enter our world, and nearly destroyed it in the process. He’s so huge and dense that his relative gravity would tear us apart if he materialized fully. What is he? An invader? An explorer? A cosmic tourist? I’ll tell you one thing: [artist] Kenneth [Rocafort] has gone above and beyond with the Macronaut’s design. He’s going to wow readers new and old.

>Captain Marvel obviously plays a large role in Civil War II as one of the figureheads, but how do her fellow Ultimates feel about the issues at hand?

>Al Ewing: Well, the nice thing about CW2 is that the central dilemma—change the future or protect the future—[is it] has a lot of facets to it. How far are you willing to go to change what’s coming? How far would you really want it to stay as it is? And the Ultimates all have different viewpoints. Let’s say— purely hypothetically, cough cough—that Black Panther and Ms. America find themselves on the same side. One of them is coming from a multi-dimensional viewpoint, seeing things with the experience of hundreds of different universes and timelines, and one is extremely concerned with the single country he rules. That’s going to weigh into their reasoning, and affect their decisions. So instead of a strict half-and-half split, we might end up with the Ultimates completely fractured, split five individual ways.

>Could that split lead to some personnel changes for the team?

>Al: It’s possible, yes. But personnel changes don't always have to be reductive. And CW2 won’t be the end of the upheaval

Yes. Galan's universe was the 6th reboot. The pre-Secret Wars universe is the 7th, and the post-Secret Wars universe is the 8th. Over in New Avengers, The Maker was able to summon the ghost of a lovecraftian horror wizard from the 5th universe, the one that preceded Galan's.

We don't know anything about 1 through 4. The 5th was some magical lovecraftian hellscape. 6th is the universe Galan came from. He was the last person alive so when it collapsed, he absorbed the last remaining energies of Eternity, causing him to survive the collapse and become Galactus in the 7th. Then the 7th is the Marvel Universe up to Secret Wars, where the 7th was destroyed by Dr. Doom and the Beyonders, then Molecule Man and Reed Richards used the power of the Beyonders and what little Doom salvaged from the 7th to create the 8th, which is basically just a recreation of the 7th hence why continuity didn't change at all between the 7th and 8th.

That was Eternity's M-Body, the Eternity for the 616 Universe. This is the true Eternity, representative of the whole omniverse.

Some of the higher tier abstracts, like the Living Tribunal, Oblivion, or Eternity, are actually multi/omniversal, but essentially have their own individual versions for each particular universe. Each their own Eternity, but just a piece of the greater whole.

It's like how it works in DC with the New Gods. There's only one true Darkseid, but each universe also has its own version of Darkseid that are all just shadows or reflections of the whole tailored to the particular universe.

If a universe dies, that M-Body dies, but it'd take the death of the multiverse to kill the true Eternity, which is the one in chains here. That's why his 616 M-body doesn't appear chained up, but this one, the one which the entire omniverse exists inside, is.

And going to repost my interpretation of the MM/Galactus discussion from the other thread:

They're basically talking about the fact that ANAD isn't a full reboot, and as a result, is leaving everything in a really tenuous state of flux. Like, yeah, the multiverse died and was reborn... but the new multiverse kept the continuity of the old one and a shitton of people from the previous multiverse carried over. It's still the same universe, but it's not.

Traditionally, Galactus' "role" was to facilitate the change from Universe-7 to Universe-8. He would be the devourer of 7 so he could give back the energies, cause the big bang for 8, and then become a new entity there. But that didn't happen properly because of Secret Wars.

So some of the abstracts are looking at it as "since continuity wasn't fully rebooted, that means the universe wasn't rebooted properly and the cycle of death and rebirth has to be completed." Those abstracts want to bring the status quo back to how it was before Secret Wars, so stuff like Galactus being the Lifebringer flies in the face of that. Other abstracts see the change from 7 to 8 as incomplete, so they seek to have the universe be destroyed and reborn properly as opposed to the weird semi-reboot clusterfuck that ANAD is. Full reboot.

In the end though, the whole argument is moot, because they're arguing about whether status quo should be reset to how it was or if the book should be closed on the Marvel Universe with a definitive end, when in fact, the true destination is in fact the journey from status quo to conclusion itself. In other words, should the rock (the universe) be at the bottom of the mountain (the start, the status quo, where the very nature of cape comics will always pull the narrative back down to) or should it be at the top of the mountain (the destination, the end of the narrative).

Ultimates (2015-) 006-022.jpg
1MB, 1988x3056px
Galactus' task is the impossible task of reaching The End, the completion of his story and the story of the Marvel Universe, but that will never happen. These are cape comics so there IS no end, the "rock" will always get pulled back down to the status quo, but does that mean he should just let it stay at the status quo forever? No. He should keep pushing the narrative forward, keep changing, keep developing.

Galactus will likely become the devourer again, because it's inevitable thanks to the status quo always needing reset, but that doesn't mean he should give up on being the Lifebringer.

Comics are in a constant state of trying to reach a conclusion that will never come because the narrative will always fall back to the status quo, which may bother people because they want either the status quo to be maintained (Galactus should be the devourer because that's what he's always been! Stop doing all-new all-different things with comics!) or for the Marvel Universe to finally reach an actual end instead of the constant ongoing story across fucking decades of comics (Why wasn't it a full reboot! Why can't a character ever just have an end to their story instead of constantly being brought back over and over!), but the former is uninteresting and the latter is impossible. In truth, the beauty of comics lies in the struggle to go from the status quo to the conclusion, but never reaching the conclusion.

All those people that bitched about Galactus becoming the Lifebringer want the rock at the bottom of the mountain or think "what's the point, he's just going to revert back to the devourer/status quo eventually" but the story of him being the lifebringer and changing is a story worth telling. It WON'T end, it WILL revert, but he should keep pushing the narrative forward as long and as hard and as far as he can.

Face it, the continued existence of this book is in the hands of a-list-only characterfags and tumblrites. The former would never buy this book because it starts c and b-listers, and the latter won't buy the book because there are so many books with women and minorities in them that they'll only buy the ones that pander to them the most directly. Unfortunately, the fact that there are minorities and women in this comic is an after thought instead of the focus so they'll stick with stuff like Mighty Thor and ANAD Avengers where they keep going "SEE? Minorities and women! Yay!" rather than here where it's "SEE? Great art and quality storytelling! Yay!"
>>

So I didn't look twice at this book when it started, because I never read anything from the ultimate universe, and wasn't at all bothered when it came to an end with Secret Wars.

That was the main drive for me picking it up. Not because I didn't care about the main characters, I just didn't know who they were character wise. So I realized this would be a great chacne for Marvel to give them a good story.
>>
>>82358906

>>
Seeing Onslaught, Cable and Bishop in Ewings explanation of comic book time made me wish Marvel some day will give him an X-Men book.
>>
Honestly, the Lifebringer stuff is the only really interesting part of this book so far.

I've read enough Ellis and Morrison and the like that all the space/time/reality/narrative stuff doesn't really impress me much. Another abstract explaintation for the nature of why things are the way they are.

That's fine and all, but I've read many stories that deal with the same subject matter. I'm much more interested in seeing Galactus actually take a role as a hero in a book. That's something I've not seen a lot of outside him helping out during major cosmic events.

Wouldn't it have to be something different? The original cosmic cubes got their powers from the Beyonders and Doom killed all the Beyonders in Time Runs Out, so making a new Cosmic Cube should be impossible. Getting around this by having the new ones be made from neutronium seems fine.
